It uses data. I'm unsure about the amount however.
Go with Engadget.
Engadget posted earlier that att said it didn't count as data...

$5 seems like a ripoff to me

I like 'cause it does everything I need to manage my teams in five leagues. $1 per league isn't too bad. Plus it's a nice direct access and quicker than using a browser.
Of course free would have been much nicer.

I have att and I am on hsdpa not 3g after using a custom rom, am I being charged for it? I check my data usage and nothing is changing. So is this like using wireless? It would suck to later find out on my bill I am getting charged.

No charge just speed. Enjoy
So then I will be paying $15 bucks for nothing. Its just required for smartphones.

No.... Hspa still uses your data plan it is just found it faster. Its basically like 3g but better

Question, why is my messaging count, that comes up when you check data useage so high? I swear its much more then what I use in reguards to sms/mms. Do more things go into it?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I noticed the same thing. I did some testing a while back and after i had sent right around 100 it showed 180 something.
Could they be long messages that get split?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Don't received messages count towards that number as well?

Still in inbox ital be like 100 and att will say 300....

Apps
Some apps that you sideload, from third party markets, can send text messages to the app creator that contain your user data, these messages dont show up in inbox/outbox or sms watchers because the are hidden with a "invisible cloak" this is what i read in an article about the saftey of android apps. I cannot recall where i read it
I dont use 3rd party markets or sideloading and I have very few apps.....

GUYS (and GALS)!
There is an application in the Market called Quick Settings. If you have Froyo, this application has a feature that hacks the built-in Hotspot app and makes it work without carrier requirements!! I have tested it, and it works GREAT so far. Give it a shot!

Also wondering about the question above

It's funny, the dictionary app I downloaded from the market didn't have "gullible" in it...

Funny how no one can answer a simple question around here anymore, they would rather argue who the biggest @sshole is

I rooted my at&t note 3 with kingoroot. My question is: if I freeze tethering provisions in titanium backup can they (at&t) detect I'm using my tethering?

There are SOOO many ways a carrier can tell what and where your data is going. Freezing the tethering provisions will enable the tethering feature on your phone. It will not hide your data from your carrier.
I have unlimited data on my attention account so as long as they can't see I'm tethering I'm good.

If your provider see more traffic going through your connection than the phone alone would normally generate then they will assume you are tethering and change your plan and bill you accordingly.
I have hit 16 gigs before. With out root.

Like we said, IF your provider checks. Many are cracking down on data leeches as it is costing them bandwidth that is not being paid for. AT&T comes to mind as they have even announced they will start doing it as of last month or so.
Thanks for all your help guys
