OK, I've been reading here for 6 days all manner of Captivate unbricking. Here is my story...
I picked up a Captivate on the Rogers network. I connected it to my email server (Exchange 2010) with no problems, poked around, noticed the lag, noticed the SMS time issue, then promptly rooted, installed clockwork, and then threw cognition 2.2 beta 9.1.3. Quite frankly I was shocked at how much faster it was.
Anyways, after a day of poking around, I could not get my email to my exchange server running (tried the email.pak floating about), so I actually decided I was going to go back to the backup I made of my phone using clockwork before I installed cognition. When I restored my backup, I thought I had bricked my phone.
I let it rest for a day, then came back here, and found one of the 3-4 different variations of the 4 button download mode combo that permitted me to do the 1 click restore. This restored me to the AT&T version of 2.1. It worked, but was less than desirable.
I decided that at that point I really wanted to go back to stock, so I downloaded the stock backup on the Rogers Captivate wiki page, and did the restore using clockwork. The phone has not been the same since.
When i turn it on, I get an at&t splash screen, then in about 20 seconds I get the at&t "jingle", but the splash screen stays on. I can't seem to find any key combination that will permit me to get back into download mode so I can restore using the One Click that worked for me the first time. I have tried:
1. 3 button salute with USB in first, battery out initially.
2. 3 button salute with USB plugged in *as* I was inserting the battery.
3. Power and volume down (both with and without USB, and with battery being plugged in after USB and "during" insertion of battery)
4.Power and volume up with same combo's as #3.
5. Just volume up and volume down with same combo's as #3.
In all cases Odin was running before USB connected, running as administrator. I'm running 64bit windows, but I'm sure I have the correct drivers because I did this the first time with Odin and download mode and I haven't added or changed anything. But just for arguements sake I did uninstall, and then install the drivers again.
Any combination of power and volume buttons just gives me a battery charging logo. Occasionally when holding up until the second black screen I will get a quick indication that the computer might see something, but it dissappears withing a handful of seconds showing it promptly removed.
I'm downloading the Android SDK in the hopes that when I get the normal at&t splash screen after the "jingle" that something might actually be running in the background and maybe I can adb reboot download it but I'm not holding my breath.
Anyone seen this that has managed to get out of it? I'm starting to think the "unbrickable captivate" can be bricked. Assuming it is bricked, short of taking it back, is there anyone on the internet that can jtag these and in some fashion bring back to life?
Cheers,
Tim

and download mode is easy.
1. start odin3 and have data cable plugged into the computer
2. insert proper files if needed
3. hold volume up and volume down for 2 sec (no power button needed) then insert usb cable, continue to hold volumes till either the download mode screen pops up or odin3 sees the phone(if you bork the phone bad enough you can corrupt the download mode image, i did it with the not to successfull manhatten project kernel) but despite the screen being black it very well may be in download mode.
4. start flash
5. if it doesn't work send it to me ill find a use for it
alternatively if the phone can go passed the splash screens and boots fully you can adb reboot download. just get the development kit and drivers on your pc.

just to be clear, you are holding volume up as well as volume down starting with the phone being powered down and continue to hold them after you plug in usb untill something shows on the screen?
if your phone is not seeing the volumes buttons you are one of the very unlucky few that had a problem at the most inopportune moment.
there is also a way where you hold all three buttons till the phone reboots twice, or something. let me try it and ill give more specifics.

Pull the battery, open odin, plug usb into computer, hold vol up and down, plug usb into phone still holding vol buttons, drop in battery still holding vol buttons, when dl screen pops up and yellow com port lights up in odin release volume buttons. Do not touch power button at any time

Have you tried rebooting into recovery mode instead of download mode? Stock recovery is adb-ready and you should be able to adb reboot download. Its a long shot if you're having problems using button combo to get to d/l mode, but it's probably still worth a shot at this point.
If you were able to use 3 button combos before all this happened, and did NOT have to install the 3 button combo fix, its strange you don't have access to it now... Could restoring a Rogers Cappy to AT&T stock be the problem?

Yes, that's exactly correct. I do this:
1. everything pulled (battery, USB, sim, sd)
2. Open Oden (1 click)
3. Install battery
4. hold down (and keep holding) volume up and volume down
5. insert USB cable
6. depress (i.e. don't hold) power button
Goes straight to battery charging indicator.
If I swap #6 with holding the power button down, it continually reboots while just barely showing the battery charging indicator. I've tried letting go between black screens on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th black screen. Still no android dude with the shovel.
Try all the steps you stated but not the last one where you press the power button. Don't press the power button.

Trying to get into recovery mode gets me the at&t logo and the "jingle", but no recovery mode menu to reboot, etc.
This is what I'm worried about, restoring the Rogers stock over top of the Odin 1 click restore (which is an AT&T image) has bricked it and prevents download mode from invoking.

I know, I played with adb before I bricked it. ADB needs to "see" the phone, it no longer sees it (I have three computers, all three can't see it, but they can see my friends cappy with no problems first time, every time). Same process for his phone works every time to get into download mode, but not on mine.
And yes, have tried other USB ports on the same computer, both on the mainboard, and on the front ports.
Keep the ideas coming though please, I will try every one.

There's a trick to prompt download mode through a "jig" which you can hack together for about $2 in parts and a sacrificial microUSB cable...it works on the other SGSes, but I think it should work on the Captivate as well. Never tried it personally...

I work in a tech shop so have access to electronics, sacrificial cables, soldering irons, resistors, caps, etc.... could you point me in the right direction?
Oh, nevermind, found it in the i9000 forum. Will test first thing in the morning!
Cheers,
I bricked one today as well. Exactly what you are talking about here. The only thing is that i was still under the 30days so i swapped it out for a new one. As of right now ive been debating whether i want to do the voodoo fix (which i think is what bricked it to begin with)
Ok, so I had my Captivate flashed back to stock and had it rooted. I decided to update from JF6 to JH7 through Kies Mini. After it finished updating, my phone was stuck at the Samsung Galaxy S screen and then it turned black, but the buttons still light up.
I already tried doing the 3 button recovery/download mode in every way possible, but my phone won't seem to go into recovery mode or download mode no matter what I do.
When I leave the usb cable plugged into the phone as I turn it on, my computer plays the notification sound where a device has been connected, but still black screen on the phone. Happens when the AT&T screen loads, wonder if that would help somehow
Please help!

If you had usb debugging enabled you can send a "adb reboot download" or "adb reboot recovery" command to reboot the phone. If not then you probably have to make one of those usb jig's with the 301k resistor.
But you should still be able to enter download mode if you pull the battery, press the vol up/down and put the battery back. My stock phone couldn't enter recovery but it could get into download mode, keep trying.
Hmmmm. Still doesn't work when I pull out the battery, plug in the usb cable, hold the volume + and - down, and put the battery back on. It just shows the battery charging.
i have something similiar just have battery showing and wheel spinning when connected to pc or AT&T logo flashing if powered on and can't get into download mode...How does one get back to reality at this point.
your phone does not have the button combinations required to enter either download or recovery mode. I guess what you should have done before doing anything to your phone was test the button combinations in case something screwed up. then you should have flashed stock with the odin package posted in the development forum with the 3 button fix. I had to do this for my friend's captivated after realizing the button fix was disabled, but I hadn't broken the booting of the phone then. but now to fix it, other than trying to use adb to reboot into download, I have no idea what to do.
Looks like you'll need to make a JIG. Here's one thread on it:

hmy captivate died after flashing Axura using clockwork
now I can not boot up the phone, unplug the battery for 15 Min and put it back but still the same can not boot up the phone....
please help
You need to figure out a way to get into Download Mode, use ODIN, and flash back to JF6. Once you have JF6 running, you can flash whatever rom you want again.
If you search, you'll see a bunch of posts on the different methods to get to Download Mode.
Goodluck.
Yes, I know if I get download mode I can flash whatever rom, but the problem is that the phone completely dead nothing shown in the screen, I have tried the following
1- try the combination of Vol down + Power
2- try the combination of Vol up + Vol Down + Power
3- try Vol down and then connect USB
4- try Vol down + Vol Up and then connect USB
all these while opening ODIN
also I tried this on both windows 7, and windows XP.
do you have any other suggestions to do.
please help
Still have the problem, need heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp please
How did it exactly die? It'd be useful for people who may know a solution. I've heard of JIG a few times.
you get the little home lights on the bottom of the phone to light up at least?
Also.. does the computer recognize the device?
If not and it's completely black screen and you don't even feel it vibrate while booting? Its toast.
But.. try doing the battery/sim card pull - hold down both volume buttons plug in the USB and jam in the batter and see if that works.
Or.. to the ATT warranty center you shall go.
I was flashing Axura rom using clockwork recovery, and after complete the installation and start reboot this back screen comes on, now not booting at all
Odin not recognize the phone, or even the computer does not detect any connected device,
I tried pull the battery, wait for 15 min then connect the USB, hold vol up, down and power keys then put the battery back while holding these three keys nothing happen, the screen still black and the computer not detect it.
I tired all ways but nothing works with me.
Now I think it is complete died, Even I tried the hair dryer trick but nothing works.
some posts talk about JIG
How this JIG works and how to do it?

help any new suggestion
try charging the phone for a few hours, if possible try a different battery.
also you may be in download mode with a black screen. i had a bad crash once from too much overclock or a corrupted kernel flash with the manhatten project 1.6ghz kernel. it corrupted the image files for bootup and download mode, my startup screen was garbage and had a black screen for download mode. but download mode still worked. start odin, it may still show device connected.
I did connect the JIG for 10 sec then disconnect it, then connect the phone to the computer while ODIN open, but nothing happen the computer still not detecting the phone, also the screen still black, it does not even any sign of responding except it get heated when connect it to charger.
guys as posted in other thread, will reward 75 US$ for who will help me getting my phone back to life
if you got the phone through at&t, you might as well just go exchange it for a new one. the people there won't be able to determine if you've voided your warranty if they can't boot your phone either.
sorry I did not got the phone from AT&T, I bought it from Ebay so I can not send it back to them

Using your computer and usb cable, remove the battery from the phone. Plug the pc side of the cable into your pc. Put the battery back in the phone. Hold the volume up and volume down buttons. While holding the buttons, plug in the phone side of the usb cable and continue holding. You should be in download mode within a few moments. View my clip for a how-to video session on this...
Reply if this worked. It SHOULD work as you have soft bricked and this is a way of entering download mode during a soft brick of the phone.

Did you try the volume button method with plugging in the USB cable into the phone while it's plugged into the computer? It sounds like you are just doing the volume buttons plus power button method. The JiG is for HARD bricks which doesn't sound like it's what you have. Although it will work for SOFT bricks also.

Ugh. This is the way to do the button combo:
Step 1 remove the battery, open odin3 the one click jh6.
Step 2 plug in the usb and hold the volume up, volume down, and power.buttons.
Step 3 put in the battery and release the power button but keep holding the volume up/down buttons.
Step 4 press download. This puts the phone in download mode. I found this method when I had a soft brick. Umyou don't need a jig since you can still boot to the white screen. This will work.

I will try this method, as I am in the same boat as the others here. I have already placed my order for the USB Jig but am hoping that this method will work.
However, under step 4, you indicate that you "press download." What do you mean by this? Where is the "download" button? On odin3, the only buttons I saw were start and master clear. Is the download button an option on the Captivate?
To my knowledge, there is no "Download" button on ODIN or a Captivate in a semi-bricked state.
Edit:
If those directions don't work, you might also try a method I've had success with.
1. Remove battery, SIM card, and MicroSD (if you have one) from the phone
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone having no power source
3. Hold Vol Up/Down, don't let go
4. Insert battery
5. If it worked, in a few seconds you should see Download Mode

I think Im really screwed I have done everything that has been posted previosly and nothing seem to work. as soon I connect to my computer odin3 dose not do anything it's as though nothing is connected and my phone goes to that empty battery with the frozen loading star or what ever its called, it also does that when I connect it to the AC outlet.
Still waiting on the jig to arrive I think thats my last hope!
Why doesn't anyone use adb to get into download? The only time you HAVE use the 3 button is if you get phone!Pc screen. If your phone can get to the att screen, open command prompt, change directory to adb tools location, and type adb reboot download. Do all this before you hook your phone up to the computer. When you're ready connect phone to pc, turn it on, right after you see the att splash screen and hear that your phone is connected press enter.

how do you use a adb to get into download mode? is there a link you can hook me up with instructions I would really appreciated it.
I'm getting the phone-/!\-computer problem.
Here's what happened: I was flashing Odin3 for the millionth time, but this time it didn't go past "DO NOT UNPLUG PHONE!!" phase for about 20 mins. So, I unplugged it and took out the battery as it seemed like I have no other choice. Then, trying to boot the phone, all I get is the phone-/!\-computer symbol.
I went through the Odin3 post and saw others with the problem and some of them being able to get into Download Mode by holding Vol Up + Vol Down + Power, letting it cycle twice, and letting go of power when the screen turns black the second time, but it didn't work for me. I can't seem to get it into Download mode.
It also does not work when I hold down Vol Up + Vol Down and connect the usb, as it has in the past. Nor does it work with just Vol Down or just Vol Up.
I just tried the One-click Unbrick on a Windows 7 PC and a Linux PC and on both of them it did not detect my phone.
What are my options with my phone?
Did you have GB bootloaders? If so, download mode is Vol down + pwr button.
I was going to stock from Cognition 4.5.3, so I'm guessing I didn't. In any case, that combo doesn't really do anything to my phone but turn it on (to the phone-/!\-computer screen) when it's off.
make/buy a jig and if when you use it you still get the phoone...!...pc image try falshing from that screen as the image for download mode might not have been wrutten to the phone so the only image to call on when booted into download mode is the 'incomplete flash' screen you're seeing.
Will a Jig definitely boot my phone into download mode? Or is it kind of another thing to try?
Edit: the only reason I ask is because the methods that have always gotten me into Download Mode don't seem to work now.
making one can be take a little finesse to get right, a properlay made one that you buy should do it first thing.
but like i said you might not get the download mode image on the screen even though the phone has booted into dl mode. that is just a pic that the firmware contains that is called on when dl mode is booted, if the flash that resulted in the phone...!....pc screen failed before the dl mode image was written then the phone...!....pc is the only thing you will see even though it actually IS in dl mode

I know that I'm not getting it in Download Mode now because the computer never seems to be able to recognize it, so I will order a Jig and see if I can get it to work.
To further elaborate, I have gotten it into Download mode using 3 button combo many times before, and holding down the buttons does make the screen turn black, and then go back to the phone-/!\-computer screen, so it is doing something. Will the Jig work in this situation, since the buttons are working but it's not going to download mode?
A jig will always force download mode, unless of coarse the usb port on the phone is broken.
To my understanding if the jig doesn't work not much else you can do except a Jtag service, that's more expensive than buying or making a jig. A easy how to for a jig is here. They aren't expensive to buy ~$10 but if you are in a rush and have the patience that how to will works wonders.
Easy download mode
I have bricked my phone 3 times now. I have always been able to get to download mode using this method:

Method 2:
1. Remove the battery, sim card, sdcard if you have one
2. Plug in the USB cable
3. Hold both Volume buttons
4. continue holding both Volume buttons and Insert the battery
