Android 2.2.1 updates installation - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
Im on a rooted, unlocked N1 running radio 5.08 and on stock rom.
Earlier today, I was asked to update OTA to android 2.2.1. The installation is about 3.9mb. Upon restarting, my N1 stayed at the android-with-triangle-exclaimation_mark screen ..... and I had to remove my battery to reboot it.
Upon going back to the updates screen, it says installation failed.
Am I missing anything here?
TIA.

I got this notice too, but I'm not installing until I know what it does. I'm guessing you lost root in the process of updating.
Also, this needs to be in the Q&A section, not Dev.
I pulled the .zip file from the /cache directory, attached on post #11.

Mine took ages at the flying X screen, but it went through eventually. Now to try it..

Can you post the link to the update please directly from google ?

Forgot how to do that. I do know how to use ADB though.

Just type this commande line in adb
adb shell ls /cache
and/or
adb logcat > log.txt then post the file
then download the update and go check your log.txt file and send it to pastebon.com for us

Looks like FRG83 update. File exceeds size limit, so using .zip.

I couldn't find any URL for the update in this log.
You can also just look at your sdcard and look for the update.zip

Just had the exact same thing.
Rooted, locked, running 4.06, T-Mobile.
Took out the battery after the exclamation, rebooted, went and checked the about phone section, and everything is still the same.
Click the system updates button, but it says everything is up to date.

I'm going to assume this update won't work for those of us who rooted, judging from all the battery pulls.

BTW, original file name is:
c8847c98b948.signed-passion-FRG83-from-FRF91.c8847c98.zip

Nice. Wonder what are the changes here...

Well, this is how it is always. But if you find where the update.zip is. Either from the url in the logcat or on your sdcard. Then the good guys can play with it and make it available as a update for all, including root, etc.

I pulled it from the /cache directory. It isn't in my sdcard.

So this is the correct url?

Update aborted. What'd I do?

no battery pull needed, you just have to wait a long time.

Are you running custom ROM and recovery? How were they affected, and root?

How are you updating? I keep getting aborted using the update.zip method.

Normal everything
only thing i am is unlocked
running stock =)
instructions are
1. Download the Android 2.2.1 firmware for the Nexus One >HERE<
2. Rename the file update.zip and copy it to your microSD card via USB. [Note: make sure the file is named update.zip and not update.zip.zip.]
3. Power down your Nexus One
4. Hold down the “Volume Down” button as you power the phone back on.
5. A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down to “recovery” and press the “Power” button.
6. When you see the triangle with an exclamation point symbol, press the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time.
7. From the menu that appears, select “Apply sdcard:update.zip.”
8. When the screen displays “Install from sdcard complete” select “reboot system now” and wait for the phone to power back up. (this will take a long time)

I had a unlocked bootloader AT&T N1 on FRF50, and reverted last night to stock EPE54B, including stock recovery.
You can get the stock image at [EDIT] Original Link was bad try this link http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Passion (Nexus One)/
[EDIT] then start with Step 2 from the following instructions

link is currently borken?? can i ust the liunk previous and download something there???or is there another site that brings me back to 2.1 with radio....??
I got the PASSIMG from another site (the site that HTC is sent a C&D), and I put it on my AT&T Nexus one (currently frf72 rooted), and it checked the files and then it gave me this error "main version is older! Update Fail!" then asks me to reboot.
Is the passimg file for t-mobile version and at&t version different?
Anyone got the AT&T version? Trying to revert mine back to stock.
EDIT.
Ok, I tried a couple stock images, didn't work, but Finally found one:
PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_1.14.1700.1_EPF30_release_signed.zip
this one works on AT&T Nexus One, rename to PASSIMG.ZIP and go into bootloader to auto restore to stock. EPF30 2.1-update1 firmware.
i need a tmobile stock verision rom so i can go back to it from froyofrf83...can someone link me this and do i need to change radio???

Hey, I'm seeing a better responsive stock browser after the update.
The issue is discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=873364
The scroll is now usable on pages with big images which wasn't the case before.
I'm so happy, I have a working stock browser again.
Anyone else see the same improvement?
Also do you know of any other bug fixes?
this is OTA update not Full ROM

I did it OTA style and it did not remove root for me. Weird.
Although I'll have to flash CWM again, it seems to be broken.
So, the root is possible on the new version 2.3.6 with the update.zip of chendd ?

I'm wondering the exact same thing.
Tried to flash the update.zip thru CWM but it gives an error. Is this normal?. Maybe have the "stock recovery" is a pre-requisite to flash an OTA update. If not, perhaps I missed something to do.

It happened the same here. I think it would give the same with the stock recovery, I already tried. I restored the very first backup I done right after rooting and it worked flawlessly. Maybe this happens when we give root permissions to apps that don't deserve them
However I lost root and I just re-flashed the superuser zip file.

Nope. I tried what you did. Also pushing the app via dab. Deleting data and cache then deleting the apk and pushing the new one. Every time it said the app could not be found cause it was not installed.
Anyone else have any luck with this?
The only other thing I can think of is replacing it in the rom zip file before flashing.
Can anyone extract the boot.img for 2.3.6 and post it up?
I kind of did something silly and need it!
Previous boot images do not work with 2.3.6.
A
Never mind, sorted!
PS: Just used the superuser file and have successfully rooted 2.3.6 and installed CW Recovery 5 too.
I know the dangers, but **** it, I like having root access!

official ota 5.5.893 should i install it?

Just turned my phone on and it had a system update available to 5.5.893. I am forever rooted, and I didn't uninstall any bloat, also didn't update any leaked updates. Can I update and keep root, also can I just update or do I need to sbf back to bone stock? I have read all the posts on the leaked ota's but I want to be sure they didn't fix root in the official ota I just got. Thanks.
if you didn't install yet... can you use an app (like root explorer), to navigate to your /cache folder and grab the file FIRST?
Forever root "should" hold, and keep you rooted... BUT I haven't received the update to try it to confirm.

OK, checked the updater-script file - no mention of /data anywhere, and it only mounts three partitions - /system /preinstall and /webtop.
I'm guessing that it does not - plus, I've not heard of anyone saying that it does, so....

NEED HELP!!! Updating my firmware to 2.2 or 2.3 with weird build number

No I have'nt tried it as yet...can you explain what passing.zip will do? And will the rom work regardless of my build number? I just want to know if it is safe...I don't to cause any damage to the phone. By the way..thanks for your responses.
Hey i downloaded the rom, i followed your instructions but nothing happened.
Then i tried to opened the zipped folder and could not. It says that the folder is either invalid or corrupted.
So i'm not sure if that's the reason why nothing happens when i load in the phone.
Try to download it again, or try this one (don't mind the RUU_Passion_Vodafone_Generic_3.11.151.3_GRJ22_release.exe).
I downloaded it twice already, and it said the same thing. The file is either invalid or corrupted. Thanks for your quick reply...I just really need this 2.1-update1 firmware to update. lol

Yes, it's a rar. Extract the PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_3.10.1700.1_GRJ22_release_signed.zip, rename it PASSIMG.zip (make sure it's not PASSIMG.zip.zip - hidden extension) and copy it to the root of your µSD card.
Power off your Nexus One and then press power button + volume down. You will enter in bootloader and all you have to do is wait.
Okay, i went through all your instruction..but nothing happened when i went to the boatloader. I saw the sd checking, and at PASSIMG.zip, it says no Image!. I'm wondering if it's because my hboot is the older version. My version of Hboot is 0.33.2012 (PB9910000)

You can Manually update, the files are are located here androidfilehost.com/?w=search&s=g900a&type=files, since you are on build OC4, the first update you want to do is G900A_OC4_tF2_OTA.zip, (located on page 2 of the link i gave you) after that you can then update to OF3, and then go from OF3 directly to PA1 which is the latest one.
to update rename it to update.zip, put it on the root of your external sd card. Then power off the phone and hold vol up+home+power until you see recovery in the corner, then let go of power and volume and keep holding home till you see the recovery menu. use volume down to choose update from sd card/external and power to select it then find the update.zip file and select it.
The update will factory reset your phone so backup everything you need.

Great write up, just to add a little bit. You don't actually need to rename the files. Just put the files on your SD card and select them one at a time. To get your phone updated to the latest, it will require several updates: OC4-to-OF2, OF2-to-OF3, and OF3-to-PA1.
