Galaxy S What first to do? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, my Galaxy S just arrived this day and i right now unpack it, but after modding my Motorola Milestone with EclairModv3, i thought what is the best ROM what i should use at beginning? My modding knowledge with Android is bit limited, like i said i just installed GOT Recovery + EclairModv3 with my Milestone.
I appreciate every answer

Good before i make a new thread i using this one instead. My question is, right now im using XXJPH + root + One klick Lag Fix. Should i stay or should i use another ROM for getting the most out of my Phone, i heard good things about JM8 + Voodoo Lagfix

What to do first.
Learn to use forum maybe?

Flash JM8 and install Voodoo Beta 4 lagfix.
Then enjoy the magic!

JPK is amazing. Been using it since it got leaked and had no problems. You should flash JPK asap and enjoy its FroYo goodness until the official version is released.

thx everybody for replying and thx to the mod for moving this thread.
I just recharge my SGS Battery to 100% and then i go to set up the JPK Version. i already found a JPK-lite Version in Android Dev Section, gonna try that to be exactly. And yeah will be back here to tell you what happened wrong (don't think that will ever happen) and what works (everything i guess )

Froyo betas are buggy in speed and whatnot. I say install JM8 and use OCLF as Voodoo seems to drain batteries like a hooker on a sailor

I'd say use XXJM1 Rev 3, and I strongly recommend against using lag fixes which mess with the filesystem.
Too little research has actually been done in regards to the design to ensure there aren't no long term problems (such as Corrupted IMEI, when updating in the future).

yeah will go to stock firmware again in future when official froyo comes out for SGS right now im using XXJPK + Lightrom v3 which includes OCLF without any issues at all but like i said i respect every answer of yours
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk

First thing to check is three button combo (vol up+home+power, and vol down+home+ power)works or not? If yes then do all flashing, updating, etc, ect.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

flash jpk.
root your phone.
get a lite rom or make one yourself.
install OCLF
set alter minfree to strict
set scheduler to cfq
and you need a seat belt so you won't fly away

[Q] Captivate lag fix help

i'm loving my new Captivate, and i'm glad i made the switch to android. but one thing i wasn't expecting is the lag issues. i see that xda has more than a few solutions for me. but like i said this is my first android phone and the transition has been a little rocky. can anyone walk me through the one of the 1 click lag fixes? i'm on a mac so i'm already starting at a disadvantage. is there anyway i can do this whole thing via terminal emulator right on my phone?
Thanks
First, If you have access to a windows computer, try flashing this rom. its fixed alot of issues for me. including the lag.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751518
If not follow the thread below.
but for the busybox step sideload this one cuz you need busybox 1.17.1(I've uploaded it here for you-http://www.mediafire.com/?z89f7zt9kyxb7n3)[the one in the market causes issues because its missing some commands)
follow the rest of the steps in this thread. this has worked the best for a few people I know. -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747397
OneClickLagFix V2.2 Install Error
Not sure if this is the place for my question but any who here goes:
I applied the lag fix as directed to my captivate froyo 2.2 and got an error. "Hit an error, undoing lagfix! OneClickLagFix V2.2+ failed with erro: Could not mont loopback device/dev/loop5! mount: Device or resource busy
What suggestions as to what I should do to correct this and continue the installation with OneClickLagFix? Delay my last...I found the answer I was seeking. OneClickLagFix V2.2 working as adverstised. Last benchmark test before OCLF V2.2 was 948 and after OCLF 1830.
Nice!!
Hi guys i have a samsung captivate . I installed froyo on it. Build number FROYO.UCJI6
I notice that when i am in applications and i browsing through i get some lag and it sometimes sticks for a slight second.. How can i fix this? i am a noob at these stuff..
I used the juiced ROM and it's great. Battery life rules and the lagfix is great.
try moving all the apps back to the internal memory, those apps that u moved to sdcard must go back to phone memory before applying the oclf

Hi guys I am new in here, dont' know if here is the right place for this question... well here it goes...
I had updated my captivate with the official UCKF1 2.3.3 gingerbread... i want to install voodoo lagfix, but I dont know if it is possible for me to install it in my rom... I am rooted..
TIA
cant use voodoo lagfix on KF1 for now period. its all kernel related and once/if samsung/att releases the kernel source then and only then can ext4 be implemented
to be honest, if your a new captivate user you shouldn't be flashing gb roms, flash to stock using odin and flash 2.2 and 2.1 roms since they are the most stable ones yet...in my personal opinion if ur a noob and want to get rid of most of the lag in your phone flash serendipity 6.4...super easy flash through cwm and it's stunningly fast, crisp and stable as hell...

[Q] A legitimate voodoo question

Ive been searching this forum to no end to get some information on installing voodoo....every page I read has conflicting information. I have the leaked froyo JI6 and cannot find a voodoo lag fix only instruction set....if anyone with this ji6 has installed voodoo can you please tell me how and if its worth it? also whats with this reddening of the screen? Anyway thanks to all xda people this site rocks.
ps. in addition to the leaked froyo ive rooted with the one click super root. Just a beginner but this lag fix sounds like a necessity
You would have to flash a kernel that has voodoo through odin onto you're phone. My suggestion would be to return to stock then pick out a custom 2.2 rom. Several have voodoo as well as many improvements over what you are using

Theres tons of them and id like to stick with one close to what im running now...i love the lay out and the way i have it set up....just want to improve this lag....tried ryans oclf and it was absolute crap. All it did was manipulate quadrant...had absolutely 0 real world effect. Ive noticed that cognition doesnt have the froyo style google bar at the the top with the blue g. call me picky 8)

Are you rooted? If so run a titanium backup for all your user apps, no system data.
I have never used the ji6 leak so as to the look I do not know for certain
cognition is based on leaked captivate froyo, like what you are on. Many, like the rom I am on are on leaks our official releases from other devices.
Voodoo is vastly beter then ryan za oclf. From what you are saying flash stock then cognition. I believe that would be the closest.
If you do not like cognition there are many options out there. If you need help along the way pm me.
Google bar you are talking about is just a widget I believe. It can be there if you want it to

Many thanks and happy new year!
You could just pull the kernel out of the cognition rom and flash that. It will bee the zimage file in the updates folder. Easiest method is using sgs kernel flasher app that neldar created. Then you could keep what you have and enjoy voodoo lagfix as well until you find a rom that you want to try.
Sgs kernel flasher. It is an app in the market that the last poster mentioned. Looks like you can use it to change your kernel and get voodoo. I have not used it yet though
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
See THATS what im talkin about. You guys rock. Once I flash the kernel...which voodoo do i use? Not sure that lagfix only is availabe....have you seen a screen problem with voodoo? One guy said his screen had a red tint and im not really into that kinna stuff. lol
Voodoo uses ext4 file system so not really a choice other than on/off or choosing to use it for /system (yes by default). I have not seen a screen color change using kernels with the "color fix" and I don't think the kernel in cognition even utilizes it, though I could be wrong.

This is as far as i got last night... I downloaded cognition 2.3 b8 to my laptop. Opened the update folder and selected zimage file and moved it to the phone.....opened sgs kernel flasher and selected zimage....but couldnt bring my self to hit choose and reboot....am i doing this the right way? do i need to back up? i dont mind reinstalling apps and my contacts are synced with google...i just wanted to make sure im doing this properly. Thanks again
Use app to backup your current kernel. You should be fine

If you want to make a donation, design gears created cog, and the kernel. And I think neldar created the kernel swapping app

one last question. if hell freezes over and we DO get an official 2.2 pushed to our phones.....the method to disable voodoo is the same for us leaked 2.2 folk correct? making a folder that says disable lagfix ?
If the kernel does not have disable built into recovery, yes disable lagfix folder in voodoo folder on sd card will disable it. Also, if you use Odin to get back to stock it will wipe out the ext4 file system.

Galaxy S Slower Than a Snail...

Hi Everyone,
I recently bought the Galaxy S. I read about its processor and it beong one of the fastest one around, thought i would be getting a healthy dose of speed. But it has hardly been that. I recently upgraded to the Froyo (JP6). After that, the applications lag, the phone hangs abruptly and other such painful stuff. Please let.me know how to get to the bottom of this. I mean... Where do I start off..??

Go and get XXJPY, means Froyo 2.2.1
To get it running fast, update to a XXJPY custom ROM and enable a lagfix. And believe me, it's worth to take you time to read stickies. You'll become a bretty much educated adcanced Android user and you are able to do the right things in certain difficult situations.
Do a Factory reset and clear the cache from recovery.
OR
If that does not work then flash a speed kerner.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756
OR
Flash a 2.2.1 stock ROM
http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm
OR
Install Darky's ROM v8.0 (Froyo 2.2.1)

Need ROM recommendation

Hi all. I'm a long time WM user, but a complete Android noob. My gf just got a Vibrant, and I was able to root and unlock it. I deleted some of the bloat that came along with it.
I'm going to get a Captivate very soon (it's stock ATT). I know the phones are almost identical, but I would like to get a stripped rom. Think Da_G's Fuze and Jacko's Rhodium.
What would be a good rom for me to start with? With WM, you would just flash a rom and be done, but with Android, I notice there are both roms and kernels. Which would I need? And what order do I flash them in?
Thanks in advance for any help and info.
a. this is the dev section, meant for posting roms/kernels and not for asking simple questions
b. a rom always comes with a custom kernel
c. since there's dozens of roms you're going to have to look at its features/themes and decide which one suits you best.
Need to learn where to post properly.
Sorry - can a mod please move this to the general section. But thanks for the info regarding roms/kernels.
Start with Cyanogen first.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
dont post here blah blah...
read the rules first blah blah...
Id go with a Froyo ROM first, i went with Mikeymike's Serendipity 6.4 for me first, super easy to do it and much less can go wrong. never soft bricked my phone on a froyo ROM.
then when i went to gingerbread i went with Mikymike's Serendipity VII, soft bricked it 3 or 4 times. i recommend getting a JIG or making ur own JIG before doing a gingerbread ROM.
First rom, avoid gb roms. Do not mess with boot loaders until you understand your phone. Froyo roms, cm7, miui

+1 best advice of them all , personally im biased .. (read my sig )
although I disagree , cm7 and miui is not somethign for starters .. read the Cyanogen OP it clearly states its not a rom to start with ..
for the rest .. best advice is to try them all and se what works best for YOU.
You are correct about cm7 and miui, and you make great roms
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Although CM7 and MIUI are great Roms.. Go with Serendipity. Start with Froyo then go to the Gingerbread version.
Personally, it's the most stable and has never done me wrong.. But then again it's all up to the user.

new to captivate, need help upgrading to 2.3

i just got this captivate and it's a new build 1108(07.12.2011)i guess. i have been reading for hours and hours on several forums, about how to root and update my phone from 2.2 to 2.3 and use the xda lagfix. my moto droid 1 is rooted and running ss/cm's latest 2.3.4 and it smokes the pants off of this samsung. i am finding several step by steps for 2.1 to 2.2 and so on, but nothing for 2.2 to 2.3 that actually works for me. wondering if my phone is too new. i dont nesc need to root, but really want 2.3 and or xda lagfix. or do i need to root??? can someone please help me? i would give you my moto droid 1 hacked and smokin fast for a succesful updating of this slow as can be captivate. i'll even pay for shipping etc. LOL!!!
Find the odin one click thread, do that, you'll be back to 2.1, then find a thread explaining how to root, then follow the directions on how to flash gb. Pretty easy if you look around a bit and read up. If my phone wasn't about to die I would find the right links for you, but it shouldn't be too hard, there are plenty of guides on here

I have been off the captivate for a while now, so there are much easier ways to get to gingerbread than when I was still on it. However, if you backup your apps with titanium backup, you should be able to do the following: once you install your new rom, run the "restore missing apps" function, and it should keep your progress in games without messing up your rom. The problems people run into us when they run the "restore all apps" process, which restores system apps and screws things up. If you only restore missing apps, you'll be fine
The edit is because I'm drunk right now. If you backup your apps on your current rooted setup with titanium backup, you should be able to just restore missing apps with titanium backup once you flash the new rom without any troubles and have your saved game data.

Read, read, read. And read some more.
You will need to upgrade your bootloaders, and upgrade your ROM/Radio/Kernel.
This all carries with it a fair bit of risk. I would suggest you understand how to recover from a "soft brick" before attempting to re-flash or upgrade anything.
Also: This is in the wrong section, and if I'm honest, this isn't much of a first post if you're new to XDA.
THANX everyone. esp. *toy028*
read till my eyes bled... and
1-superoneclick to root
2-odin 1.7 to flash latest speedmod kernel
3-after headaches got cm7 rom to flash and now i'm stuck with it as it puts it's own kernel(clockworkmod4+) on the phone and it will not let me flash anymore update.zips
dont understand the edify request it gives. cant find an edify option in the rom. afraid to reroot, reflash speedmod and try again because it(the new kernel) doesnt seem to be compatible or want to let me upgrade LOL. so i am trying to get cm7 to please me.
wish there was a simplystunning rom. tried andromeda3 and it wouldnt flash for me. cm7 is very lacking. got gapps but it's still VERY lacking. quadrant got slower on video but faster on cpu??? wierd. neocore got slower too. only went from 55.7 to 52.3 but still. only one keyboard on cm7. no super customization like i"m used to with ss. i really miss forcing my browser to pc mode for streaming southpark etc. debug option doesnt have a desktop selection bummed but gonna try and deal with it.
thanx again
Andromeda3 wouldn't flash because of the version of cwm you are on. Andromeda3 is 2.2 and requires an older version of cwm

When you figure it all out, use Apex rom. It's up to date and works great for someone who is green.
I'll second the call for Apex. I've tried several of the available Gingerbread ROMs, but always ended up going back to Apex. Installed the recent 9.2 update and won't be looking back.

Guys/Gals! be careful when recommending JF6 Odin1 Click, he stated his release number on his phone being 1108, and if I'm not mistaken, he will brick his device based on that build number. OP do a search for Odin 1 click and make sure you can use the JF6 version
thanx for the warning. i was actually aware of such a conundrum being possible and thought i would try it anyways. there seems to be a lot of mis-information or better yet only partial instruction from those who assume eveyone knows all of the things to do before the instructions they DO give. at any rate, one click worked for root. everything is groovy BUT i still cant use any other rom but MIUI's latest. which is sooooo lacking it makes me sick and i go back to cm7 everytime. oh well. at least i can get 2370 on quadrant with cm7 and 57.7 on neocore instead of 1300 and 23.5 respectively. my moto droid one does 1700 and 23.7 so i figured the captivate would smoke it. now it finally does. it matters to me when using google earth and maps etc. those apps suck up the cpu/gpu ram and anything else they can. so i guess i'm happy with cm7.
