Largest micro SD card? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I seem to remember that my captivate can take a 16GB micro SD card. Can it address a larger one? How big can I go?
I'm also assuming its bus or processor limitted and that there is no reason to buy a class 6 card. Any comments there?
Thanks
Carl

i'm pretty sure the largest size you can go is 32gb. and i'd suggest a Class 4 or higher if you're going big but be prepared to pay

32 gb is the highest and class ia up to you. I am happy with my class 2. I see no reason to spend thwarting money on a higher speed when class 2 records fine.

Doesn't the class have more to do with transferring data more than actually writing on it?

Class ratings determine how fast the card can write. Writes are slower then reads so this has become a standard of measure. Writes (and class) correspond to MB/s; so higher class does equal higher throughput.
Higher Class will give you faster transfer from PC to phone if you have no other bottlenecks. In some cases, like hd camcorders, higher class cards are required for recording. The phone does fine with a class 2 for recording HD video, so i see no reason to spend the money on higher class cards. I can wait the extra minutes if I rewrite the entire card, but most of the time I am just adding a few GB here or there.

[Q] MicroSD cards

So where are the good deals on MicroSD cards? I'm interested in at least Class4. What are you using with your GTabs?
I was wanting to hold out for a class 4 or better 32gb, but I don't think the included 16gb is going to last me much longer on it's own.
I have a class 6 8gb transcend card for backup that seems to read and write very well on the tab.
I usually just use google search and click on shopping to find good prices since they change constantly.
Thanks for the advice, I did see that shopping.google.com was probably the best way to find good deals.
Does anyone have any experience using a class 10 microSD in their GTab?

Speed Class Rating
The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD Cards, defined by the SD Association. The Class number represents a multiple of 8 Mbit/s (1 MB/s), and it measures the minimum sustained write speeds for a card in a fragmented state.[11]
The following are the ratings of some currently available cards:[11]
Class 0 - These cards do not specify performance, which includes all legacy cards prior to class specifications.
Class 2 - Minimum of 2 MB/s performance. Lowest speed for SDHC cards.
Class 4 - Minimum of 4 MB/s performance.
Class 6 - Minimum of 6 MB/s performance.
Class 10 - Minimum of 10 MB/s performance.
Keep in mind that the class is based off WRITE speeds. I have a class 10 in my Vibrant, but only a class 2 in my Tab. That is because I tend to change what I carry on my phone more often than my tablet and thus it is noticeable. But if you are just going to load up 4 gigs of music and 8 gigs of movies and never change it, go with a cheap card.

I just ordered a 16GB class 6 for my Tablet. I'll probably be swapping out movies on a semi-regular basis, so didn't want to get just a class2.
Got a class 4 32GB from NewEgg. Works quite well and exceeds the rated transfer speed most of the time.
I'm using the Sandisk Class 2 32GB card and it's great. Sandisk cards always perform better at read & write speeds than the stated.
You're not going to notice any difference in speed..... not until you connect to a PC that is the only time when you will find a Class 2 is slower than a Class 6.
Using a class 2 16gb and seems to working fine

[Q] About SD Card

Hello
I got my Legend about 2 months ago, and I have a big problem with storage space...
What is the biggest sized SD card the Legend can use?
What is the type of SD card (micro, mini, etc...)
What is SD card class?
Thank you very much
microSD compliant with SD2.0 Standard (aka microSDHC)
The biggest size available currently is 32GB.
I don't know if even more is possible with microSDHC or if bigger cards will only be possible with SD3.0 (aka SDXC) but that question is not relevant as you can't buy any greater then 32GB yet.
The Class of the SDCard is a measurement for guaranteed minimum speed in random read/write.
The Class does not provide any information about real-world speed or max speed.
For your mobile phone the class is a pretty useless criterion as you don't need any guaranteed minimum speeds but good overall speeds ESPECIALLY sequential.
The guaranteed minimum speed is important for HD Video Cameras for example where you write data all the time at a given speed (resolution).
thanks.
but I DO need class with high speed because I want to use Data2Ext...
Don't pick uSD card based on class !! class tels you MB/s for sequential write only... you need a card that is overall fast, I had 16GB class 10 Kingston and data2ext was just horrible!
Now I'm with class 4 Sandisk mobile ultra and it is in fact faster in every test I ran...
So read reviews before you buy
ye but that is exactly why im asking...
well then, I recommend sandisk mobile ultra as I have it and it is OK, there are probably faster cards...just see the small files read / write speeds in reviews those are of greatest importance
i purchased a kingston 8GB class 4 which crapped out. android kept reported sdcard unexpectedly removed. tried all sorts (formatting in windows, android, quick, long, etc).
RMA replacement did exactly the same, so i'm guessing kingston class 4's are best avoided.
If I recall correctly I have a 16GB microSDHC Class 4 card. After applying data2ext with this card, my Quadrant scores hit around 1500, which is crazy.
This is where I found my card: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-16G...P06K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298984123&sr=8-1
I personally recommend this card.
witch is better class 4 or class 6?

[Q] Memory card for galaxy note

I want to buy a 32gb memory card for my galaxy note. I want to know which class memory card should I buy. I am getting 32gb sandisk class4 card @1.9k and 32gb sandisk class 6 @3.9k. What benefits will i get with a class 6 card. please help !!!
You'll just be able to dump content faster to the card with a higher class.
by class 6 you must mean the new sandisk ultra series (red color cards).
if you gonna use your card mainly for storing apps and other such random access stuff go for class 2/4.
if its for HD video recording, large file transfers, etc (sequential read/write) go for class 6/10.
btw, for HD video playback even class 2/4 is sufficient. although there is an advantage for HD recording when going for higher classes.
also, if you meant the class 6 sandisk ultra, most of the reviews as well as users say that its much faster than most of the class 10 disks in the market, including class 10 sandisks.

Thanks for ur reply. Yes the class 6 card is the Red Mobile Ultra one. I wanted to know what kind of problems I may face with a class 4 card while 1080P video recording and is class 6 really worth almost double the price?
I went for a class 10 and it seems alright. Not overly impressed with the speeds though. But no issues with HD recording.

If you are shooting 720p or higher videos with lower class, you may experience stuttering in the video as the card isn't rated for high throughput data transfers. I'm not saying that it will happen every time, but that is the reason you should go for higher class cards if that is your main purpose. Higher class cards have higher sequential write speeds, which is what you need for saving pictures more quickly and for recording HD video. Lower class cards have much higher random access speeds, which are needed for someone who uses lots of apps.
so if you store all apps internally and keep the external card only for multimedia, you could blindly go for class 6/10. you get very fast data transfers also (PC to Note).
this class 6 mobile ultra is very new. it could actually be a good compromise between class 4 and 10. but don't worry too much. just stick to sandisk
you can also check this one. looks good and priced well for a class 10.

imho class 4 is enough for u to store mkv video file, it's for me.
Guyz I have decided for Sandisk class 6 card. But now the problem is as I see. sandisk 32gb class 6 @ 50$ and sandisk 64gb class 6 @ 111$. Out of these 2 which one do you recommend. THanks in advance !!!
If you can afford it then obviously the 64GB is better, but i would get a UHS-I if i were you.

Haven't got my Note yet, my question is regarding internal memory vs lower class external interm of speed as you said lower class will have stuttering and slow in saving pictures. What if I use my internal storage as the main temporary storage for taking HD video and picture, would it stutter like you mention?
Then when I'm done recording, I just transfer the recorded HD video to my external card. Would that make scene?
I want to use my internal memory as a temporary storage and will move my data to external card when doing house keeping. Would clearing internal storage enhance overall phone speed performance?

Help me to choose a Memory card

Hiya guys,
I have been looking forward to buy a memory card of 32 GB. I have found out that there are various memory cards available of different classes. The least one is Class 4 which is the cheapest and Class 10 is the most expensive. I am not sure about the difference between the two.
I would like to know which Class memory card should be fine for the Galaxy Note ? Class 4 will work or I should choose Class 10 memory card ?
Please help me with this...
that would be the read speed.. the higher the better..
most say class 4 is plenty fast for just about everything..some say class 10 would work better if you're trying to watch say a very large video from your sdcard..
personally i think a class 4 or 6 would be enough.
I'm Using Sandisk 32GB Class 4 Memory Card.I Think It Is Best & Enough For My Galaxy Note.
Thanks guys...
I have checked the reviews on Amazon and gone through some of the threads available on this forum. I'm sure Class 4 would work for my requirements. I will choose one..
Thanks again...

I'd recommend the SanDisk MobileMate series, think they're class 4 or 6, good value and excellent stability, as well as speed. Worth a look.

I use class 10 card because they have a better read/write time as an class 4 Card.
Currently using SanDisk 32GB class 4.
The speed is good enough for me.
Lexar 32 GB Class 10. One of the cheapest and fastest.

It's worth reading up on transfer speeds versus read/writes for small files versus larger files. If you're only reading/writing large files then class 10s are what you're looking for.
If you're needing it for installing and rilunning apps or other collections of small files then class 4s will have better performance.
I've also read up that samsung are about to release some new standards with much higher data transfer rates, I'm not sure the note will make full use of them, but they'll be quick transers:

Mine is a Sandisk 32 Gb Class 2, I'm one of the suckers who bought the first time a 32Gb MicroSD got released and payed double the current price..
But it is good enough, I can play large movies up to 3+Gb
**while you're at it, you might want to consider buying 64Gb MicroSDXC instead. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330784
For listening to music or viewing films, classes 4 or 6 are ok (even class 2 from a good manufacturer like SanDisk).
It's when copying large music libraries or films that you appreciate having a class 10 card. And if you intend to use your GN for viewing lots of films, then you'll have to carry copy operations quite often...

They do make a difference, but in reality any card with class 6 speeds and up, and 4 GB+ should be fine. Your 2 GB class 2 card is a little small and slow, geting a bigger and faster will offer noticeably better performance in areas such as boot times and application responsiveness.

Yes, a 16 GB Class 10 SD card will have write speeds around 10-15 MiB/s and read speeds around 15-25 MiB/s in real world performance scenarios. Some brands preform better then others such as the SanDisk Class 10 cards.

Glad I could help man, if you want a good list of all known working SD cards that are compatible with the RPi check out this list here.
I just placed the order for Sandisk , mobile ultra 8 Gb !! seems it says class 10 but they say its 30Mbps !
I noticed that with the Raspberry, the "theoretical" speed matters very little.
What is important, is how fast can the card read and write small and very small files.
As a rule of thumbs, the "highest" the speed advertised by the manufacturer, the poorer the performances will be.
I have been quite happy so far with low class (6) Sandisk Ultra as they perform quite good with small files.
Hope this helps!
Hell I have a class 4 and it's good for me. Although I use a usb drive for my files. The sd is just for the OS, packages, system files etc
