I know. I'm just poking fun that a huge corporation/website is now advocating the free distribution of what is basically warez...
Wonder what Swype will do now? Haha
Wow always wanted to try swype but havent been able to get it,... moral dilemma on this one,.. i mean in a way its swypes fault for making us want it soooo bad and taking so long to get it out right ??? i may just have to flip a coin on this

What are you talking about? I use Swype and my battery life is on par with everyone else. Standby power loss of an average of 1% per hour, Swype doesn't use any more battery than any other input method in standby.
Heck, it is even the default keyboard on my G1, which sees about 1.5% standby drain per hour - with wifi always active (set to never sleep).
I believe you are misinformed.
wait, what is the newest version of swype? I'm using the 1.6 (before cnet leaked), is there a newer version?

I actually found another keyboard with tracing capabilities along with a lot more features highly customizable too costs like 2.50ish but has a free 245hour version i loved it bought full version anyone used ultra keyboard yet ???
Which one are you using? If your telling me there is a choice with this swype stuff I would sooner just pay someone for a file that will do this then have to hunt down a new beta every 3 months. I just thought they were the only ones who were making something like this? Also if they have a trial to see if it works the same, cause if so then I don't care what I got to pay I just want to not have to keep having it die out on me.
Lame swiftkey doesn't use tracing capabilities that I need.

There's Ultra Keyboard and SlideIT
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.binarybulge.android.apps.keyboard.trial/
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.dasur.slideit.vt.lite/
Both have trial versions.
There's also ShapeWriter, which was pulled off the market when the company was bought out, but you can find the full apk they released that doesn't have a time out via a quick Google search.
"As we bring Shapewriter into the Nuance family, please note that we are suspending downloads of the iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile applications."
Nuts...

Realistically, your options are...
1. For an Eris, you want an HVGA version. Since Swype is commercial, although still beta, files/threads/posts come and go depending on content. We might as well not make the lives of the staff here more complicated by posting material that they are ultimately obligated to remove. Use google.
2. SlideIt mentioned above. Seems to get decent reviews. Like Swype, it has quirks that you will become familiar with as the system is used. If you're not in the Swype beta, and you can't locate a functioning tweaked apk floating out there, this is likely your best option at the moment.
3. The Swype beta is closed, but it appears that you can register there to get in line if it reopens. Frustrating solution I know.
None of those options are great, but some are better than others depending on your own knowledge base.
B
New versions of Swype available on my blog at
Have BOTH HVGA and WVGA versions on there. Just look for the swype article
Just throwing this out there. I did not waste my time checking out ultra keyboard. It has a swipe feature as well as multi-touch. I swipe in portrait and multi-touch in landscape. Exactly what I was looking for. Lots of customizing options. You can make it look pretty much however you want. Lite and paid versions in the market. Well worth the money, IMHO.
Slideit is great but I'm having one problem and I don't know if anybody else is having the same issue and thats the voice to text. I can use it for the first time texting somebody but if I try using it again for the same person it won't work. It'll record but it won't text it out for you not unless I go to my contact list and pick the same contact again then it'll work.

Decided to take a peek at Ultrakeyboard. Agreed. Well worth the cost (under $3).
If you have a hankering for trace typing, are locked out of the Swype beta or simply don't want to play the expiration dance game that they insist upon, want something supported and available in the market, this is a very nice option. Very configurable (can be a plus or minus depending on user). Dictionary management seems better on a quick look. Highly recommended by me as well.
B
Ultra Keyboard has become the only keyboard I use. I have it set for trace in portrait and regular multi touch in landscape. You can even use any other Keyboard's theme or create your own.
Im also searching for the ultimate tracing style keyboard as i hate the traditional typing method.
To date i have tried Swype (very average and overated however the new version 3.5.83.26516 is much more accurate). Also there are nice skins out there too.
SlideIT: Great keyboard and i believe is faster than Swype. Can also learn custom words and phrases that you commonly type. ie/ swpe 2 letters that you teach it to replicate an entire sentence. More language support as well.
Shapewriter: no longer supported but if you find the APK floating around, it is by far the most accurate in my opinion and ive used all the ones ive mentioned for months. It looks dull but man is it accurate and fast. smile icon right on the main screen as well which i like. Easy to learn words etc, very no frills but extremely accurate.
FlexT9 Input: They have brought out shapewriter with this release. Also great keyboard in that its very accurate, moreso than Swype etc but Shapewriter has great edit word capability. ie/ just type fast and then select anywhere in the word to get the word suggestions which FlexT9 doesnt have to date.
Ultra keyboard: as others have mentioned, very customisable, not bad. I question the dictionary though and this reduces its accuracy which Shapewriter has otherwise great potential, there is nothing you cant customise.
TSwipe Pro: Only drawback is its dictionary, many words dont exist so its just not as fast as Shapewriter but excellent features, just like Ultrakeyboard. You can customise anything, looks great, great features and one of my favourites but at the end of the day it needs to be accurate and fast as well.
Can anyone else think of anyother sliding/tracing/swping style keyboards, im always on the lookout for one that just excels in every area which im yet to find (yes being picky). Wish one of the keyboards had a combination of them all
I add another vote for Ultra Keyboard. I think Swype was a bit more accurate in guessing and had a better dictionary, but I was sick of dealing with Swype not sticking.
REALLLY dumb question.... but what is swiping in terms of kbd swipes?? I get the swipe up/down and left right on screens and in apps but when typing?? Confused and want to understand.... laughing welcome .

Getting the latest version of Swype is hard to come by. I've searched for the latest beta and no one seems to have it, or if they do post it, it's yanked off line pretty quickly.
From what I've gathered, Swype is trying to position themselves into including the app as a default keyboard for as many upcoming Android phones as it can. Having a contract like that will net them a heap more money than just releasing the app into the Market. So they've really been on top of shutting down any non-sanctioned copies of the latest version.
I like the Swype keyboard and hope to use it again one day, but in the meantime, I've just been using SlideIT. It's a decent enough app that mimics Swype, though it's a bit more non-forgiving of sliding over incorrect keys. Just takes some getting used to I suppose.
I had the same issue, and then gave up on Swype and installed SliteIt. I've actually found that I prefer SlideIt over Swype after getting used to it. The hint line and other UI features are more intuitive.
swype is pretty easy to find if you now where to look. just google it with some common file sharing terms and you'll find it. the current version im pretty sure is 2.4.44, at least thats what im rocking.
...but what the hell gives? Does swype actually have plans for the public at large to use this? It has always worked perfectly well for me, ive never had a single issue with it so i dont get the "beta" tag.
I dont remember where i downloaded it, ive certainly never registered at swype, beta has been closed every time ive looked anyway. But ive had swype in my file manager for what feels like forever, i just installed it and when i opened it to use it it said the "trial has expired". . And whats the deal with letting a few people download it every once in a while?
Personally I dont even think its better than the stock keyboard which is pretty bad itself, maybe thats just because i use landscape alot and swype isnt so great in landscape, or perhaps i just got used to typing on the stock kb. But this super-exclusive "beta" jazz has gone on long enough hasnt it? I mean how much better can it really get?
Actually,I think swype still has a fair way to go.
But I agree, it is good enough for release, and even tho I'm a beta tester. I'm over the beta as well, should be on market
You should try ultra keyboard, its available in Market, and with tracing enabled its just like swype.

Personally I don't like Swype because the "tracing" action is difficult to do unless you're sitting still holding the phone in one hand and "typing" with the other. Which excludes a whole bunch of activities with my phone.. Walking between meetings, sitting in the car at a stop light (phone in car mount), etc..
But I have yet to find the 'perfect' keyboard.. HTC IME is about the closest for me and I use it most of the time, but for some things I really like SwiftKey, Touchpal I use sometimes but it gets laggy... Maybe I should create a post and combine keyboard pro/cons, although it'd be very personal...
I wouldn't expect Swype to ever be in the market. They've stated publicly they are interested in working with OEMs to license and deliver Swype, not the end user.
The OEM bit makes some sense since it is already coming pre-installed on some phones like the Samsung "Vibrant" (Galaxy S) phone from T-mobile and others.
They have said that swype will be an OEM value added product. Like the beta when they get a final out the apk will be readily available for download so I'm not concerned. If they wont take my money I will feel no guilt over not paying for it.

Hi everyone,
We would like to provide an update regarding the unauthorized distribution of our Swype software for the Android platform. We realize that many sites are now distributing this software and several are providing installation instructions.
We are glad that you like Swype, but we did not release or leak it for distribution and do not currently support any downloadable versions.
There are now two devices that ship with the Swype keyboard pre-installed: the Verizon Samsung Omnia II on Windows Mobile and, more recently, the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G. We’re very excited about these releases, and there will be a number of new device launches in the near future. Because our partners are highly sensitive about their product releases, we really cannot say anything further. But a lot of work goes into making sure that Swype integrates perfectly with each device we release and by comparison, any leaked or hacked version of our software will work improperly or not at all.
One might ask why we don't just release it ourselves and save everyone the hassle? The reason is that we have spent seven years building Swype and our business model at present is OEM licensing. We do plan to get to direct-to-consumer distribution, but it is a different sort of business with unique challenges and thus it is hard to say when.
Stay tuned (and provide feedback) on our forum at swype.com

The Swype Team

Personally I think Swype is an annoying PoS to use, and this is after months of use (I'm in the official beta). The pop-up screen that occurs every time you tap a letter is so annoying it's downright idiotic. Not having a microphone key is also extremely frustrating, as is not having any access whatsoever to the custom dictionary it uses. Great idea but some of their implementation is absolutely horrible.
I've used all three of the above keyboards with tracing capabilities and in my opinion, they are all are better and much more pleasing to use than Swype.
I've switched to Ultra Keyboard and purchased it yesterday. Hope that helps.
Yeah I don't use swype because its no good in landscape, its really not that great in portrait but I haven't found a good keyboard and I've tried them all. I just wish I had the option. I know its blasphemy but I still think the iPhones method of invisibly resizing the keys is far and away the best but it must he trademarked since it hasn't been mimicked. I know about thick keys or whatever its called but its awful, just terrible. I'd have no interest in swype if we could get one like the iPhone. Of course, if I had a 4" screen I might be plenty happy with stock. Android said they know their keyboard blows, but if the iPhone method is truly trademarked android is going to have to get pretty creative. But if its not trademarked I wish they'd just copy it already. There's no shame in using what works, its more shameful to not, upon principle, use what works. While we're copying the iPhone lets make the maps zoom in and out using a single image instead of pinching to where I want it,then it jumping further in and then loading a whole new image at yet another level, if you've zoomed on an iPhone you understand how defective android maps is (that's not to say the content sucks, google maps is the best application there is, obviously). Sorry about that last part, when I rant to my wife she just turns the TV up really loud.
It does seem a bit rich to get it Beta tested publically but then only have it as a OEM release.
Google bought out blindtype, if they implement that as the stock keyboard. The iPhone comparison will be long forgotten, it will be strides above

I guess I didnt "dislike" them I just didnt find them to be significantly better than stock or htcime. Actually Ultra Keyboard was a bit overwhelming for me. I do like SlideIt, I have SlideIt, htc and stock installed currently, but like i said, in my opinion neither is unequivocally better than the other so i usually just end up on stock. I think this screen is just big enough for stock to be comfortable, not awesome, but adequate. I definitely find myself sending texts in immediate succession to correct/clarify the original, but im used to it so thats not really a complaint. But i have gotten pretty used to typing on stock, and voice text is phenomenal so i use that alot. I love that Google is constantly obtaining new startups, I forgot about the blindkey acquisition thats pretty exciting. Just knowing that Android is aware of the deficiency and has plans to address it gives me reason to be patient, and pumped!
Its getting real close to gingerbread time, I cant wait to see what android will look and feel like on my N1.

I got the beta, I like the fact that its kind of a mix of of swype and a gingerbread kind of keyboard, but I the swyping is not even close to as accurate and well done as Swype's. Sadly Mobilism has its own set of problems. The site has been down for much longer than I expected. I did manage to still easily obtain this download simply by viewing Google's cached version of the site, which shows all the external download links to all the apps [sweet!]. Anyway I just wanted to include that bit of info for anyone else searching this or other APKs on Mobilism; the website is currently offline.

@BlackSideburns Is this your version? TouchPal v4.8 Beta 20110729
Official website doesn't post a beta version number so I am just interested in having the latest.
If you got your beta version as a PM from retweeting TouchPal's video link, I'd be interested in obtaining this APK from you. If there is no login required like Swype's beta, it's probably already circulating around, but an upload would still be appreciated if it's different from the above 4.8_2011 07 29 version.
On one final note, I had a VERY similar experience with this "curve" enabled in TouchPal curve (it has to be enabled in options apparently) as BlackSideBurns. I have the exact same problem for the word "the" when "curving", I was forced to tap-t-h-e then shift back to the swipe method to save time. It felt the same but slight differences I had to get used to, such as how there is very little support for symbol swyping as Swype has lots of support for. It is still a Beta though right? There is always room for improvement
It's true the tap method works better than Swype! The advertised "blind-typing" isn't the best description, but it certainly does hold up it's word if you are not fan of Swype/Curve.
Also bnichs5 stated above that the new version is TouchPad not TouchPal. I can't find any other references of TouchPad.. so I'm confused about that statement.
Sorry for the super long reply I hope someone reads most of it lol.

Let me start of by saying: whoa!!! I know this has been in the works for a couple months so this may not be news to those who have adamantly been following Swiftkey's every move(pun intended). But for those of you who are just now tuning in like myself WTF man.
So to tell you how I stumbled upon this, I was casually using the "God-forbidden" Google keyboard and being that I have big fingers I tend to use gesture input more often than not and Google's prediction is still lackluster compared to my trusty Swiftkey, I thought, while remembering that when I did a clean wipe to install PureNexus I forgot to install Swiftkey. So I proceeded to complete such a task straight away, however in the process of "click PlayStore" "Search SwiftKey" "Install Swiftkey" and I did something everyone rarely does after install, I read the Terms of Service
And Now here I am shocked and appalled. I don't know why but I honestly didn't mind that they ported to iOS and such (which I also didn't know til today) but the Microsoft move is dealbreaker for me. R.I.P Swiftkey. Its only a matter of time and I'm the type to cut ties before the worse happens. I loved you like a stepbrother' adopted child. You shall be remembered for the good times and not the bad.
Thanks everyone in advance, send your condolences to Swiftkey and in the meantime would someone please point me in the direction of a comparable keyboard because honestly the best keyboard I've ever used was (believe or not) the Oppo Keyboard.
They were acquired back in February I believe.

Let me start of by saying: whoa!!! I know this has been in the works for a couple months so this may not be news to those who have adamantly been following Swiftkey's every move(pun intended). But for those of you who are just now tuning in like myself WTF man.

The latest Google keyboard is good too, if you want something different try Fleksy (Playstore).
i've been using Swype since it came out with an exposed module that gives me the number row on top because i really cant bare to use anything else...
I find swiftkey predictions to be the best by far, what other keyboard can really compete?

I know, same. that's how I feel.
I don't think it should be a deal breaker as I am fairly certain that the SwiftKey team has joined Microsoft so it will still be maintained by the same people. And just because Microsoft owns it, does not make it any less of an amazing keyboard.

I agree. Hell, I even use QuickPic still even though they were bought by Cheetah (ugh). They haven't ruined it yet.

Its like when LogMeIn acquired LastPass and everyone freaked out and jumped ship.
Nothing has changed. I'll leave Swiftkey if it starts being a bad keyboard, but its been my standard for as long as I can remember.
I simply cannot live without SwiftKey!
