Hi,
I've been messing around with my Captivate a lot recently, and as a result, **** has indeed been going awry, and my phone's been bricking (black screen after the S screen with responsive softkeys but nothing else). Odin3 fixed it the last two times, but I'm feeling guilty about continuously asking my suitemates to use their PCs so I can unbrick my phone... so could someone please put out a version of Odin3 for Mac?... Thanks!
I second this request, I dont own any PC's and windows vitualization doesnt work with ODIN.
so parallels with win 7 wont work wit odin3??
You guys will have to talk to samsung about it...
Bootcamp FTW.

Yea, bootcamp works great with Odin.
Well, there are those of us that cannot afford a Windows license, or have the capability (or lack of morals? LOL) to obtain it through... other means.
It'd be great if you could help us out... I thought Odin3 was a community based tool anyway?
My main computer is a mac. I like this idea!

I tried Parallels - Odin3 doesn't work through it.
bootcamp
you cant get odin to work through parallels or virtualbox. i have tried both to the point of exhaustion and it was pointless. You have to partition and bootcamp windows into your mac. that is what i did!

you should be setting up a partition for windows via bootcamp in the first place, since you can still run and boot parallels using that partition, unless hard drive space means that much to you.

Hello all.
First of all, before people shooting at me and saying "please search", I come from many Google and xda search with "MacOs, download mode, failure vm, virtual machine, odin , kies" in every combination you can imagine and no result.
So, the problem is the following one:
I remarked, with some friends from a french forum that we all succeed to use KIES in a virtual machine and connect the phone:

That work like a charm.
Then w wanted to flash, then reboot the phone in Download mode ( yellow android at work ) and then there is a big crash telling us that the device is not recognized:
"unable to connect USB device to virtual machine"

I would really be pleased to have more info on this issue and if we are only a little group to have this issue.
For info, I am using MacOS Snow Leopard and the trial of parallels desktops 6.
It doesn't work with VMware Fusion either. Must be something to do with the USB interface on Samsung.. I've heard some people have it going on Virtualbox running on Linux - but not Mac.
Works fine on VirtualBox on Ubuntu.
Why don't you give Heimdall a go? Haven't tried it personally, but OS X is in the list of supported OSes
Maybe I found the explanation , thanks to ed link:
Although Heimdall runs on OS X all Galaxy S phones tested thus far contain a bug in the secondary boot loader that prevents the phone registering itself with OS X. This may change if Samsung release an updated secondary boot loader.

Maybe there is the same problem.
Does the secondary boot loader has a link with download mode? If yes, that might be the problem!

Saw that today too.. .pretty sure its the issue since it affects all parallels, fusion and virtualbox on Mac OSX.

Yes, download mode functionality is provided by the secondary boot loader. If you really desperately want to get it working with OS X then you would need to download the source for, modify and install a custom IOUSBFamily.kext that contains a work-around specifically for the Galaxy S.
The only options for we Mac users right now are to find a Windows machine, install boot camp on your Mac (then point your vmware machine to it to save duplicate Windows wasted space), or possibly find a way to boot from an external drive with Windows (like a thumbdrive or livecd if possible).

Exactly what i have done. And I HATE it :|
I had this same problem, and I just saw this thread after spending hours last night trying to figure out why XP in Parallels stopped recognizing the phone as soon as it went into download mode. So irritating!
it works for me on VMware 7 + WinXP SP3
because my Win7 64bit PC is crazy it won't recognize the phone randomly, twice it bricked my phone doing the Flash on the Host PC
so after setting up my ROM FLASH VMware machine, now i no longer have problem
stupid windows, no time to mess with the system registry to figure out what is the madness with the USB detection
i'm pretty sure you should have no problem as well if you use VMware 6.5
I posted this in the Heimdall thread but thought I should let followers of this thread know also.
I sent Samsung the OS X USB failure log and since then Samsung have informed me that the Froyo update (specifically the Nordic version released October 15) includes a fixed bootloader which should allow the phone to be recognised in OS X. I'm yet to verify this but hopefully this is the case!
is there any stock rom out there for the captivate ? because i cant use odin because I am on a mac....
any help ?
thanks !
borrow your friend's windows for a while ...
true well i'm in a dorm where everyone has macs and no windows ... ill try to figure it out some more .... or im just going to have to get my hands on a windows computer
Wait a minute, you own a Mac and have never heard of bootcamp?!
Its a feature built into OS X that allows you to run a windows partition. **** man, I downloa.....er......"obtained" a copy of winblows 7 and can boot into it any time I want on my MacBook!
Google it if you don't believe me, but its well worth it.

It's the only way to painlessly get Odin working, I found an old copy of XP for just this purpose.

I think there is a Mac tool similar to Odin called heimdall. Search for it on xda.
I am trying to flash my broken GALAXY Tab since my ASUS TF101 got run over by a School Bus...
However, the drivers don't work in Windows 8 RTM... Even if you set compatibility mode to Win7, the installer pops up incompatible OS Version...
Can anybody help me?
I am not an expert but I have read that people like you who are having problems like this have installed windows-xp in a virtual box setup in their win-7 or 8 computers and flashed their Tabs.
Give a try.

Well I don't have Windows XP to install in a virtual machine...
And I already tried to flash it on my mom's Win7 computer and now it won't even turn on.

Well we would need more info regarding this if you expect any help. Did you use odin? What error did you get? Did you pull plug early? Did battery run out? Can you go into recovery? Can you go into download mode?
Plenty of topics already on this so you would be better of going reading them, plenty of info and answers for you already about "wont turn on" subject so no need for us to just repeat them all.
I recently converted my windows 10 laptop completely (accidentally) to ubuntu studio and am having a hard time finding what can be used in replace of odin. I have heimdall but read it doesnt work above 4.4.2 and cant find jodin3 as links to it dont load. Anybody here use linux and can give a few general steps on what to use and how to get it?

Install a Virtual Machine or VirtualBox and download a version of Windows that you can run on it with a key to activate windows or just use a temporary one but you'll have to learn how to use the VM'S they're not hard at all though.
I will deff try that and appreciate the help. That doesnt seem difficult at all or anything but other then that is there a method that is for linux such as heimdall? Heimdall may be ok i just read it doesnt work after 4.4.2. Right now the virtualbox does seem best as i am used to windows but wondering if there's something specifically for linux or Linux compatible.

Unfortunately I have not found anything capable of being used after 4.4.2 on Linux which is why I said the VM.. I use VirtualBox and it works great running Windows 7 but you need to make sure that you have all the software it needs to run installed.. This isn't like Windows where you just install a .exe and it works, there's a lot more involved than that. With VirtualBox after you install it you'll have to also install a VirtualBox Extension Pack. You should make sure you read up pretty good on it and you should be ok.
Will do and I appreciate your help. Which linux are you running or have you? I am running ubuntu 16.04lts ubuntustudio and whenever i try to open stellarium the screen flickers bad and freezes up. By chance do you have any experiences with that or have i shot way too left field.
winetricks is what you want.. in the app store unbuntu
Hi all. Thought I'd check if there is a newer method to root the phone on the Mac.
I can't run Odin on a Mac and I don't have enough space to bootcamp into Windows. I've tried Parallels in the past but it didn't work.
I understand Heimdall is not maintained now? I've tried that in the past too but couldn't find the PIT file for my phone anyway
So I've been stuck and now the phone is acting up. So much junk on the stock rom.

I was in the same boat with a new MacBook being my new computer. I ended up boot camping windows 10. I tried to figure out jodin with no success. Maybe someone who has done this recently will chime in. Good luck.
You need to download the heimdall, that is compatible with your operating system. For me, I am on El Capitan, so I downloaded the one from here. Once I installed that, I ran the heimdall frontend app first. I went to the "utilities" tab, connected my phone, and then clicked "detect." Once my phone is detected, I just saved the pit file.
Not for Nothing Folks, You can get a windows computer/laptop very cheap now a days. If you are planning to do a lot of flashing on android phones, nothing beats a cheap windows computer. MicroCenters, Amazon, Ebay, Best Buy have cheap computers that will be able to do what you need for flashing your phones. I know you can do it on a mac ( and some say it is easy or fast), but you have to make sure it is setup correctly or you can do damage to your phone than it is worth. I used to run Mac, and I got tired of trying to get things that run on windows and not on mac, to work correctly. I cant remember the last time i even started my mac book.. LOL
Just something to think about..
****And no reason to argue with me or prove that mac is the best out there, or you will never buy a windows computer. ***
Google and try jodin. It's a Web based java program. Ive successfully flashed my N910T and G900T with it.
