I have done some searching around on the internet trying to find a way to set my captivate to use edge/2g network only and I have not yet been successful. I have tried using anycut, and a method that uses a special menu by dialing *#*# a number and #*#* and no luck. Are there any sure fire methods for doing this?
I just used the method of punching in *#*#197328640#*#* Clicked Debug Screen then Phone Control then UE State Control and chose Change RAT to GSM.... after that wait a few seconds and your 3G icon should change to E. I just tried this method a few minutes ago with success
Awesome just what i needed. I tried a similar shortcut dialer but had no luck. Now if only there were a way to create a one or two click shortcut for this

I got the same problem i unlocked my Captivate im on 3g speeds but the icon stills shows Edge
Hi, THANKS FOR THE TIP!!! Sometimes my Captivate runs out of signal.. GSM now is on 850..
I was wondering about this:
-Debug Screen > Phone Control > Network Control > ""Adquisition Order""
What this stands for?
Thanks..
Cant answer the last question but something I found incredibly useful was to download SamServMode from the market. It takes you straight into the service menus without dialing that string.

Thanks! You know, my Captivate doesn't seem to be very smart.. When it was on 3G (RAT to WCDMA) in a dead zone, it lost all its signal, and i couldn't send any SMS or call (While my iPhone 3G still had signal and funcionality) .. And now, on GSM (EDGE), my Captivate has 3 or more Signal bars than before...
BTW, #*0011* is the same menu!
I wish there was a quick toggle for this like there was using SBSettings on my 3gs :-/
I have NO 3G available at all in my area, but when I drive 1hr 15 mins to school, there's some 3G there. Would be nice to be able to toggle this without all the input you seem to have to do, as I feel I'm wasting battery with 3g turned on all the time and it not available
Samservmode works, and its better than remimbering that number every time. Even though you still have to navigate through the menus

Hi all,
Would like to check if anyone knows how could i set "WCDMA Only" (3G Only) on Galaxy S?
I can only Force 2G only via the settings menu, but not 3G only.
Managed to access the "Phone Info" menu via *#*#4636#*#*, selected "WCDMA Only" from the dropdown box.
However, nothing seemed to be set nor i see any button to save the choice?
Anyone happen to know how can i have it set? Or i could manually set it by applying some settings somewhere?
Thanks alot!
you cant force 3g... you would get no signal if you didnt have a 3g connection

*#*#197328640#*#* > debug screen > phone control > network control > band selection
You need to do this after each reboot though as it does not stick.
Is there a way to shortcut this with anycut?

thank you very much..i have been searching this high and low...you save my day..
Thank you so much! This helped me diagnose the SGS and see if I have 1900 3G in my area (1 bar). here's a tip that I used for quick access to the debug screen just as a trial and it actually worked
Enter ONLY *#*#197328640#*# then hit add to contacts (notice there is no * at the end).
Give it a name (Samsung Debug Screen) and tap to edit the number and enter the final * at the end.
Save and exit. Now whenever u want to enter debug mode to change the network or other stuff just type *#*# and it should appear. Tap on the contact and voila!

My operator doesn't have a 2G network... all they have is 3G. There's no point in my phone looking for anything other than a 3G network.

sorry to ask if this is already answered but how exactly to i get to CONFIRM my wcdma only selection? i check it and nothing happens, data connection stays on "G" symbol. I know for sure that at the place where i tested i get NO 3g signal. which means probably that i should be losing all signal after choosing wcdma only. that does not happen. also if i close the phone info app and reopen it, choice gets back to default (3g/gprs).
any help appreciated... I really need this.
forcing to only 3g is a bad move, i tested it on my n1 and i kept dropping calls once 3g lost signal.

Its available in the new firmware I9000XWJM1
Hey, its there in I9000XWJM1 and tested working great as expected! However its a beta so you may see other issues. Not sure if its there in latest stable.
Just to confirm, i upgraded my firmware to XWJM5 today, and i noticed that in settings > wireless and network > mobile networks, there's a new menu 'network mode' in which there's 3 options - auto / gsm only / wcdma only. Nice touch!
In answer to the cynics, there are times when browsing, when the phone is borderline whether to give you 2g or 3g, it does come in handy, and it's safer too, as if i have to browse on 2g it makes me want to smash the phone up!!

LOL "safer"
@OP Although 'WCDMA only' mode may not be a good idea and hence not recommended but just to confirm
my current Build i9000XXJPH have following three modes
GSM/WCDMA (auto mode)
GSM only
WCDMA only
JM8 build also have this mode. I noticed that when I flash the i9000M (bell version) previously it didn't have these modes.
Team,
***First off I am not responsible for damaged that occurs to any phones. Make sure you know what you are doing before making changes!!!***
I was having an issue with the mic gain recording distorted live concert audio so I was wondering how to access extended features on the Galaxy S.
The following is the code to dial in to access the hidden Service Mode menus.
Example how to access menus:
Dial *#*#197328640#*#*
This allowed me to adjust the mic gain to get better audio recordings at loud live concerts.
There seems to be several hidden menus on the Galaxy S and I am wondering how many more there are. Which led me to post this thread.
If any of you can find more hidden menus post them and i'll add them to this OP.
So far I know about:
Hidden Menus:
Service Menu: *#*#197328640#*#*
GPS Hidden Menu: *#*#1472365#*#*
Battery and General Info: *#*#4636#*#*
GTalk Service Monitor: *#*#8255#*#*
LCD / Speaker Test: *#0*#
Factory Data Reset: *#*#7780#*#*
Camera Information: *#*#34971539#*#* (Do Not Use The First Option "update camera firmware" you will break your camera)
Change Power Button Action: *#*#7594#*#*
Show IMEI Number: *#06#
Be careful in Service Mode that you know what it is your changing. If you hork up your phone you can reset it by doing a Factory data reset in Settings / Privacy / Factory data reset.
I would do a nandroid backup before making changes if your just experimenting.
I will add reference material below as I can:
________________________________________________________
Service Menu:
The following popular data communication technology is associated with each cell carrier type:
GSM = GPRS (2g), EDGE(2g), UMTS(3g), WCDMA(3g), HSDPA(3g) {Cell Carrier examples: AT&T and T-Mobile}
CDMA = CDMA*(2/3g) EV-DO(3g) WiMax(3/4g) {Cell Carrier examples: Verizon and Sprint}
Preferred Network types:
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best. (Maybe the Samsung Galaxy S will take advantage of this???)
Unknown - If none of the above fit or the phone is acting weird as far as connecting to the carrier, you will see your preferred network type is set to this.

I'm just wondering specifically what settings you adjusted and to what level to make this possible?
Just got home from a show and tried recording a short bit to see how it came out before potentially wasting my time doing the whole set, and the sound is terrible.
Itd be interesting. if we can access the volume buttons so we can use this to access the lock screen instead of just using the power button

Recently bought a Samsung I897 Captivate. Its a unlocked phone and I'm using it in Argentina with Movistar. My previous phone was a Motorola Milestone, and it sometimes changed the connection from 3G / HSDPA to 2G (EDGE), in 3G areas. The solution was to go to APN settings, enable "2G only", then disabling it, and the phone instantly switched to 3G again.
However, the Captivate doesn't have such option. Setting the phone to Flight Mode its useless, it will keep connecting in 2G.
Only solution I found at the moment was to go to Network Mode (*#0011#) then navigate to Network Control => Band Selection, selecting WCDMA only, and then enabling Automatic again.
That seems to reset the connection.
I searched in the market for free and paid apps to help me fix this issue, but I found nothing, only the Toggle 2G app, but it only works with Cyanogen Mod.
I have some questions:
If I set the connection to WCDMA only, then I'll have no signal at all in 2G areas, right?.
Does anyone know a quicker way to do this?. I tried to make a shortcut to ServiceMode with dg Quickcut but when I try to open it it crashed the phone.
Thanks in advance.

as of right now, there is no "fix" for this. the best you COULD do is to flash Eugene's VibrantHybrid ROM where the "use 2g networks only" option does exist, but you'll lose GPS (for now)

you should revert back to JH3 if you're going to use Hybrid (I don't believe JH7 is compatible yet, there are some issues that cropped up with SRE, so it would be safer to do JH3, or even better JF6). I've seen slightly better reception and MUCH better battery life running Hybrid

It seems it will be updated soon.
Maybe I'll give it a try.
Do you know if it removes the 850 band?.
I need it, because my carrier uses it for WCDMA.
Try this:
1. In the Market, download Any Cut. (This is a free app) 2. open Any Cut and choose New Shortcut 3. select Activity 4. Scroll down the list until you get to Phone Info 5. Select OK. (this will place the short cut on your homescreen) 6. Open the shortcut and scroll down until you see "Set Preferred Network Type" 7. Choose GSM only and you are set. This forces the phone to EGDE

Thanks a lot. I use dg Quickcut for that.
But, I don't need to force EDGE, I need a way to force 3G .
The phone usually switchs to EDGE in 3G areas, and I need to change it back to 3G.
I've used your suggestion to make such shortcut, changed it to WCDMA only, clicked the Disable Radio button twice (because it didn't changed to 3G), and when it switched back to 3G, I changed back the network to GSM / CDMA auto.
What about WCDMA preferred?. Will it try to allways connect to 3G?.

When in hotspot mode with my Nexus One, I'm unable to use it as a 3G modem when I'm placing or taking a phone call. If I'm using it as a wireless hotspot for my laptop it works just fine until I either make a call or someone calls me. The the datalink on my phone drops. The laptop is still connected to the phone but the phone can't reach the internet.
Is this the way it should work ? or should I be able to data and voice simultaneously when wireless hotspot is active ?
Thanks
You can have simultaneous connection. I just had a call while tethering, 1/2 hour ago.
Yea I do it all the time. As long as your in 3g if your in edge then no it will not work.

The 'Cell Viewer' app indicates my signal type is HSDPA (yellow) and UMTS(3G) (red) Both show on the screen and the Signal Type fluctuates between the 2.
Signal Strength fluctuates between 6 and 9 TMobile in Indianapolis.
The hotspot function works great with my laptop..... until I make/get a phone call.
The signal type then switches to EDGE (green) until the end of the call.
Any suggestions ??

I believe you can restrict your connection to 3G only. In your dialer, type *#*#4636#*#* (4636 is INFO). Select phone information, then near the bottom change WCDMA preferred to WCDMA only.
You can change it back when not using Bluetooth, if you wish...

I'm currently using CM 6.1.2 on my Milestone.
If I switch to 2G mode in the mobile network settings, I have no connection.
If I use the Toggle 2G app, it doesn't seem to really do anything. If I set 2G to use one of the options that don't disconnect me (WCDMA, CDMA or GSM 2g/3g) it still shows 3G in the status bar so I'm not sure what the point is in using the Toggle 2G app.
Wondering the same thing myself...
Does anyone knows the answer?

I am not certain about this (i use rogers), but i believe that telus has no 2G (edge) network. They built a 3G only network just in time for the olympics to replace their cdma network:
So the toggler probably cant find a valid connection and retries 3G.
Manual mode cant find a network at all.
On rogers, i can fallback to 2g. This is normal according to what i think i know.

thanks for the info.
That's what I thought so have given up on the idea of getting 2g to work
I guess when it comes to 3g and saving battery life, juice defender will have to do as it can turn off data when the screen is off but still have the phone working.
Well, I think I made some progress with this.
On my phone, I was also loosing the connection when switching from 3G to 2G but it's working now. I can get calls, it's only the data aver 2G that doesn't work now.
I have the Cronos rom on my phone, I can tell you what I did if you're interested.
Yes please do.
If it works on cm6 then at least I can also save juice by not using juice defender... oh the irony... lol

Took me a lot of time to find the right switches combination.
Anyway, I have Toggle 2G auto managing the 2G/3G and for the bottom 2 options:
2G network: WCDMA preferred (3G/2G)
3G network: GSM auto (PRL)(2G/3G)
If I check under Setting/About/Phone/Status, I see written mobile network type UMTS.
Hmm... I had those 2 settings reversed when using toggly2g
I will try that.
Right now, my mobile network type shows up as HSPA.

Not sure but I don't think so. You can turn off the data but have the phone connected to the 3G network, right?
I think you could get data over 2G but it's just very slow, right?
With Telus I don't think they allow data over 2G.
zeppelinrox, I wonder why yours shows like this, what do you have active under those settings?
What ROMs are you guys using?

When I'm on 2G it shows as UMTS
With 3G (mobile data enabled) I see it alternating from 3G/UMTS to H/HSPA.
I'm on CM6.
My phone always shows HSPA except if I set it to use 2G then it shows GPRS - which is when I have no data and no phone signal.
I did use the Telus baseband file in AOR though... I wonder how it will behave if I use the Canada baseband....
Also, here's a neat trick....
dial *#*#4636#*#*
A Testing App will show up....
Select Phone Information and then goto the bottom.
You can set your preferred Network type.
Ok so that listbox shows all the different options.
The only options that will save are:
GSM only (2g - I get nothing - shows as GPRS)
WCDMA only (3g - shows as HSPA)
GSM auto (PRL) - (3g - shows as HSPA as well)
All the other options either are not selectable or just revert back to GSM auto (as is the case with WCDMA preferred)
I just did a few speed tests and I seem to get faster speeds with GSM auto than I do with WCDMA only
Gonna try that Canada baseband now....
Edit: Same thing. Except the speed test is slower for both WCDMA and GSM autio so best off using the Telus baseband.
The dial trick doesn't work. I dial the sequence as a phone number, right?
It disappears then nothing changes.
ah.. yeah sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries...
do you use adw launcher?
If so, you can actually create a shortcut for it... I figured it out today.
1 Press and hold on homescreen and select Custom shortcut
2 Press "Pick your activity"
3 Select the second item on the list ie. Activities (with the ADW icon)
4 Wait for all stuff to load, scroll down to Settings, and press the arrow next to it to see the long list of activites that Settings.apk can do.
5 Scroll down near the end of the list, you will see Testing(.TestingSettings)
6. Select that and press OK on the next window.
I also made one for Battery History, which is actually part of the Testing app but is usually only accessible through Spare Parts.
I still can't get the trick to work... doesn't do anything on my phone
Right now I'm on the 2501 rom (latest 2.2.1 from Motorola) and I can say it's the best I've tested so far!
Outstanding battery life!
I found another way to run Testing App.
With Google gesture search you can set it to launch Settings actions
Let it scan and then write "testing" on the screen
Edit: oh crap I mistyped the code.
Its *#*#4636#*#*
I had 4536 before so I fixed it

I'm currently using CM 6.1.2 on my Milestone.
If I switch to 2G mode in the mobile network settings, I have no connection.
If I use the Toggle 2G app, it doesn't seem to really do anything. If I set 2G to use one of the options that don't disconnect me (WCDMA, CDMA or GSM 2g/3g) it still shows 3G in the status bar so I'm not sure what the point is in using the Toggle 2G app.

Well, after doing some more tests and trying different apps (2G/3G switchers) I can say those apps work only if your cell phone company has both 2G/3G network.
In Montreal, only Rogers has both.
Easy to test (btw: I'm using the FroyoMOD rom): go in "Settings" -> "Wireless & Networks" -> "Mobile Network Settings" and check "Use only 2G networks".
See if your cell phone company is listed when you do a search under "Network Operators". If it's not, don't bother using a 2G/3G switcher.
When doing this, in Montreal I see only Rogers listed. If I uncheck "Use only 2G networks" I see all 3 of them: Bell, Telus and Rogers.
Hope this helps!
