Hi everyone, I tried searching the forums but unfortunately I haven't found the answer I needed (no fault but my own). Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could explain how to get KIES to recognize my Captivate. I have the correct drivers installed (had them installed before getting KIES) and I also have the newest version of KIES that everyone is using for a manual download of the recent OTA update. My computer recognizes the device in mass storage mode, but when I swtich the settings over to Samsung Kies, it doesn't. Please help, I am trying to download the update via KIES.
Thanks!
Are you using Kies Mini? or Regular KIES?
Try Enabling USB Debugging Mode
And set it to "ask on connection"
Sometimes a fresh reinstall of KIES and a system reboot will help too
Are you using LauncherPro? Kies won't recognize the phone with it because the launcher doesn't let the MTP app start. Disable momentarily the default setting for LauncherPro, then when asked select TWLauncher. Plug in the USB, and voila Kies will see your cell

OMG. Thank you so much man!

I put cognition 2.2b7 on my phone, which has touchwiz removed. How can I put it back on my phone so I can use it to connect to Kies? Thanks for your time!

Grab Titanium Backup, flash back to a previous ROM, try the Froyo leak package with Odin, grab the TW Launcher there, just save it with Titanium Backup if you have donated version you can save protected apps, then flash back your current setup and install TW. I know DG listed some links to apps he removed but I am not sure if TW Launcher is there. I am using Cognition 2.2 beta 5 and I froze TW Launcher and can't figure out how to defrost it, lol.
couldn't i just use beta 6 to solve my problem since TW was removed in b7? if so, how can i find a dl for a previous version of cognition (<7)?
btw, thanks for the info rhiannon

You could, there are a few links up for it on the Cognition site, I'd link it for ya but it takes me to the download. Lemme find it for you. Do you have a backup of that setup stored with Clockwork, you could just flash your backup.
Here's a link to b6. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8648887&postcount=4186
I didn't backup anything because i've been flashing so many different things (just got my captivate a week ago) that I don't get enough settings/data saved that are worth backing up. Anyway, I can only find a link to the latest cognition dl on the website. By the cognition website are you referring to the one that is linked on the thread in this forum? Thanks for looking into this!

Look up that should be a link for beta 6.
I'm fairly sure there aren't any links to previous betas on the page, though there are some for different versions of 2.1. I just tried beta 8 with Kies and it said "The device is not supported by Kies". I tried reinstalling all drivers and the driver recovery option in Kies. I'm thinking I should try beta 5 or 6. Can you still direct me to a link somewhere? Thanks!

I posted a link for Beta 6 but here it is again, you need to be using TW Launcher as your browser in order for Kies to recognize your phone. Perhaps Kies doen't see it because of the Froyo leak on the device, but I know for certain that you need to have TW Launcher as your browser for Kies to recognize it. Here is where you will find Beta 6 link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8648887&postcount=4186

I'm in Canada using Bell (i9000m)
I have rooted my phone. I've used the 1 click lag fix. I've overclocked it a bit using an app/widget.
Other than that, I haven't done anything else to my phone.
I know these are noob questions, but i just hope someone can help me.
I can't for the life of me access Keis (tried everything)
I am curious: how do I update my firmware? what about the 2.2 froyo update? will it be OTA? will I still get it? What about the GPS fix?
Basically im wondering how will I be able to get these updates and fixes if I can't access Keis -- and my phone is rooted (does that even matter?) ?
Thanks in advance guys
No one?
Just basically wondering about future updates (gps fix / froyo 2.2) --- will I still be able to receive these if I rooted my phone?
What if I can't access Kies ?
I don't think the Galaxy S has an OTA function
Which means, it's either KIES or Odin

Christ. This phone is bar none the best avail. But easily has the WORST software I've ever seen.
KIES is messed and will never work with my phone/computer. It doesn't recognize anything.
So my only option is ODIN? is there anything I should be worried about with ODIN? is it really simple to flash? or do I gotta make partitions etc.
Any chance you have launcher pro installed?
im a newbie so im just providing info i have read my self and so far that ive seen odin is very simple to follow proper instructions theres a youtube video when ur flashing something your given step by step instructions by who ever uploaded the file and if you have the 3 button combo working your good to go as you can always reflash
The phone actually does have software capable of doing OTA updates. It probably isn't set up to work yet though.
The lagfix won't affect your upgrading though, just remember to uninstall it before doing the upgrade!
Root will have zero effect too, as it is just an extra (special) application at it's core.
it needs to switch back to TwLauncher for KIES to work
you can use Home Switcher

No you don't have to uninstal just go to settings>applications>manage applications
select launcher pro and then click on the clear defaults button. Next press the home key, it will ask you to choose a home app, choose TW.
Kies does not work untill you do that.
Other things to check is go to settings>status>usb mode select kies
Usb debuging should be OFF
Try to have the pc and phone on a fresh restart before trying to connect.
Basicly it should work.
Yes, Kies works only with TW. Also with the latest Froyo JPC firmware you get yor GPS fixed already.

Yes, you need to use the default TW. I had the exact problem as yours, uninstalled my launcher pro then Kies is able to detect the phone from there.

Well this is the problem: I don't know how to flash (yet) so I'm just trying to learn slowly.
I am not sure if i want to flash it with Froyo FW's -- I kinda wanna wait for Bell to release their 2.2 froyo update (b/c my 3 buttons don't work and hopefully it will fix it AND the GPS)
So basically you guys have helped me with the Kies. But I am curious about the 1-click-lag-fix (I found the APP on the market and it worked) -- i don't wanna mess up my phone cuz the 3 button thing don't work.
So I just use the APP again to Un-root, use the APP again to remove/uninstall the lag-fix, then use Keis (or odin) to install/flash the new 2.2 froyo Bell update (when it comes out) ? then im good to go ?
After I update to 2.2 -- then I root again, and lag fix?

I have a Bell i9000m, rooted, unlocked and on Rogers.
After installing Samsung drivers ( PRIOR TO connecting via usb) Kies worked on first attempt (Win7 64bit). The driver pack is 18 mb and I found it somewhere here on the forms (looking for the link).
Hope that helps.
Hi, I also having GPS problem previously and I hated samsung which produce so bad gps phone but after a while I think I finally found why causes the gps issues. Ok if you go into the GPS test mode by *#1472365*# you will notice that we are using SUPL. SUPL true GPS which will in coorporate with the compass and stalite to fix our position and direction. But our phone compass some how need to be calibrated. Just key in *#0*# then click on sensor. If your compass showing need to be calibrate then just hold your phone by verticaly and rotate it untill you get 3. Now reboot it and try the GPS.
DO NOT FLASH THE VOODOO LAGFIX WITH THIS ROM!
Download: http://www.multiupload.com/SXWLND5AKI
That file contains ODIN, the 512 pit file, the original firmware and the new leaked firmware!
To use ODIN you need the samsung drivers installed. You can get them here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
How to flash the update using odin.
Power phone off
Plug USB to computer but not phone
Open Odin.exe
Plug the USB into your phone while holding down the volume keys (Don't touch power!)
One of the fields will turn yellow in ODIN
Click PIT and select the 512.pit file
Click PDA and select the Update.tar file if you want to try the leaked rom or Original.tar if you want the stock rom
Click start
Odin will do it's thing and then the phone should reboot. It will take a few minutes for it to reboot the first time.
DO NOT CLICK RE-PARTITION WHEN USING Update.tar! The leaked rom does not include dbdata.rfs
If you already did that, you will need to flash back to the original rom included in the download first and then flash this new one... The original rom does include dbdata.rfs which will will repartition the phone correctly.
As always, I am not responsible for anything you do... ever...
P.S. Please don't trash talk in this thread.
Nandroid of a clean install: http://www.multiupload.com/FLX6P17XDP
I flashed back to the original rom and tried to use this nandroid to upgrade and it didn't work. Just sat at the Vibrant screen.
What it is:
Leaked rom from samfirmware.com
Android 2.1 (Eclair)
Good things:
New battery full notification
HD Camcorder (Same thing just new name)
Media Hub
Samsung Task Manager (Also available when holding home)
New Swype with the audio input!
Old Root method still works (verified)
Phone is usable during media scanning
YouTube can be set to HD
Cosmetic updates to music player
New and re-arranged browser settings
I tested GPS while driving, at 3 destinations in 3 different cities and all of them locked on within seconds! I also rebooted and tested at each location just to make sure and it grabbed immediately. I did notice while testing at home it was much faster in the Maps app then most other apps that use GPS.
Bad Things:
Can't flash JAC's kernel without modifications
Many apps missing from market There is a fix below...
Slide to unlock screen takes a way bigger slide
The lag is coming back. I'm going to pull the apps I like and go back to the stock rom worth voodoo.
Linpack (1st run) 8.13
Quadrant (1st run) 894
The only thing I DON'T like about this rom is that apps are missing from market.
I have tested on 2 different phones. 1 was normal with lagfixes, etc installed and after flashing there were weird problems with the camcorder, etc. We then flashed it back to stock using the old samsung release in odin and flashed the update, now everything is working great. You might want to revert your lagfixes or something before running this. Maybe it's because it doesn't include dbdata.rfs?
TO FIX THE MARKET:
Use something like Root Explorer to mount the system as r/w and then edit /system/build.prop
The 2 lines to update currently show
ro.build.description=SGH-T959-user 2.1-update1 ECLAIR UVJI2 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=Samsung/SGH-T959/SGH-T959/SGH-T959:2.1-update1/ECLAIR/UVJI2:user/release-keys
Click to collapse
Update UVJI2 to UVJFD in both lines like below
ro.build.description=SGH-T959-user 2.1-update1 ECLAIR UVJFD release-keys

After you download a few apps the market will refresh and it will work again.
awesome!
I'll bet the gps fix also! this is a nice base before voodoo. thanks!
I'm going to do some tests.
Simple question...
Does ODIN work with Mac, or is it still just PC?
As far as I know, only on PC.
Which means I have to wait til I'm at work monday unless an awesome person makes a version we can flash from recovery.
Damn! Ok, I'll just bust out my PC laptop for this one. Can someone post a link to which ver of ODIN I need to downlown for this? Or is it already added in the link above?
Thanks!
Anyone have a mirror of the download? Also.. what is the leak? is it Froyo 2.2?
I have added a link to multiupload which should distribute it to several sites very quickly.

Hi,
Complete noob here!!
So I had rooted 2.1 stock and update to Froyo leak first one it came out I believe (System Version 2.3.9.MB810), and lost root.
I would like to upgrade to the new 2.3.13 Froyo, but I'm not sure if I could just follow the instructions on the threads because they are about going from 2.1 rooted to new Froyo.
Is there a difference in the installation? Can I recover root? Do I loose everything I have? I have Titanium root but since I lost root it hasn't been backing up I believe
I been looking at both of these threads lately, sound like the instructions might work (again complete noob , so not sure)
thread: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764304
thread: androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/174152-brand-new-froyo-2-3-13-a.html
Thanks for your help in advance.
Update
I used the instructions on the thread on here and ran into an error when running the update zip
Says Error: Status 2
What can I do?
Neither will work without root... follow D2 root instructions.
So follow the instructions on this thread
forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7838000&postcount=1
And then just follow the instructions as they are on the new froyo threads
Thanks!!!
Yes, that should work. Wait for someone else to confirm this though, unless you are adventurous.
rage-against-the-cage is a 2.2 exploit, the way I understand. It isn't specific to the D2, but as I said, wait on someone to confirm. I don't know a whole lot about this. More of a lurker than a do-er.
I saw it a while ago and thought about doing it, I was waiting for another 1-click-root type of thing, so I couldn't mess up. I'll wait and see if someone confirms it then.
I used this method to regain root after the 2.3.13 update and it worked. If you know how to use adb its pretty easy.

Try turning usb debugging off (System settings > Applications > Development).
And then connect in PC mode again and see if the phone installs itself.
Try the other modes, mine work in mass storage.

Glad that helped!
Recently, I had a very long discussion with some helpful users regarding how my market disappeared in the Android Themes section. After never recovering my stock market application, I finally just flashed to the cognition rom that is built for 2.1.
This was a huge risk for me because for some reason my phone is not found in Odin when it is in download mode. I have already tried everything to get it recognized, but nothing was able to get it recognized. If I were to brick my phone, I don't think I could fix it. I soft bricked it during the problem with the Market, but luckily I was able to get the phone working again through recovery.
I am thinking of flashing to the new cognition so that I can get my phone running on a 2.2 based rom and then quit flashing until I get a better phone or figure out my Odin problems.
I just have a few questions. I know a lot of people recommend flashing to stock first (which I can't do), while others don't flash stock. I should be able to just disable Voodoo and hopefully flash successfully to a new rom, correct? Also, what are the chances of a permanent brick? As long as I could get into recovery I could probably get the phone back up again without the use of Odin, right?

Back when I was really trying to figure the problem out (about 2 months ago), I was trying everything mentioned. I tried different versions of odin, 3 separate computers, windows xp/vista/7, front and back usb ports, multiple drivers, etc... The weird thing is that the phone is recognized in odin when it is on, which is how I was able to do a master clear on it. It is just when it is in download mode that it does not recognize it.
I eventually just gave up thinking that it was just a problem my phone has. The only thing I have not been able to test is using a different cable. I have been using the original OEM one, but I guess it could be the problem.

Ok so I am a complete noob when it comes to this stuff I am very sorry but I will need a big walkthrough on this. OK I'll tell you where I'm at. I have a Captivate (ver. 2.1 Eclair) and I want to update to the latest version. I tried getting Keis and Keis Mini but neither of them recognize my device. I have a Mac computer and I installed the drivers for the phone but that did no good Also, I would like to root my phone to get non-market apps you know, but all the flashing and which program to use is very confusing to me. Just reading the forums trying to help myself just makes my head spin. Which do I use? Heimdall or Odin? What is the safest way to backup my phone incase anything goes wrong? I've been trying so hard for months now but I still can't get anything accomplished. I just need someone very experienced to teach me, a person who is almost completely new to all this tinkering and etc. Thank you guys so much!
Can't help with Kies and updating. I've never had a Samsung phone. Sorry.
No need to root to get non-market apps. Go to: Settings > Security > Unknown sources and check 'Allow installation of non-market apps'. However, installing non-market apps can be risky and is NOT recommended.

I can't select that option because it isn't available to be chosen. I must root it.

Are you sure? I've never seen a phone without that option. It might be in a different place in the settings than the one I gave.

AT&T does remove that option. It was removed on my X10 too and there is a captivate section with all info.

Yes he is sure. On the early android devices att removed the option. It was later added back on in an update. As stated above. Head over to the captivate section and you will find all your answers. Let me know if you don't and ill help the best I can.

Ok so I just rooted my phone. Not sure how I can tell I did, but I did. Since I have a Mac, many forums are no use to me. Especially when flashing (p.s. I don't even know what that means) I downloaded the latest Heimdall on my Mac, but I have no idea how it works, or how to get ROMS. What do kernals do because I see those are needed? Also, when I rooted my phone, aren't I able to install non-market apps onto my phone? Because I have a .apk file for the Amazon Market app on my internal SD card but it still doesn't allow me to install it.

Purchase these 2 app's from the market. You will first need to set up a Google account and a Google Pay account.
Mobile Odin
and
SuperUser
You need to root the system before installing SU
My only concern is being able to instal non-market apps. How will I complete this using these two apps? Is there a specific ROM I need to download?

No, installing these 2 items will unlock the phone. It will also make it possible to install a rom whenever you want. Superuser access is what allows you to use the app's you are looking for. You need Odin installed to install superuser.
Also, I bought both of the apps. I couldn't get the update for Superuser Elite, and Mobile ODIN doesn't work because it says it can not find the Mobile ODIN package...

did you read the directions on Google Play on how to install? Did you Google/YT using Mobile Odin on Captivate?
While we are all here to help, you need to do some legwork.
What have you learned in searching the I897 forum?

Ok so, I know the best way to be able to install non-market apps is by flashing the rom Cognition, but the download is no where to be found. but before I get the ROM I need Rom Manager right? I got it, but can't use it because I bought it without getting the free version first to get the actual files. Why? because I figured my device isn't rooted. If I were to root the Captivate, I would be able to download the free version. I tried rooting with the One-Click root that I downloaded, which is the only one that I saw on the wiki that actually seemed plausible. It doesn't work. It is supposed to push an update.zip to my SD card and it is there. but when I go into Recovery Mode, the option to choose the Update.zip isn't there. So know I know what I need to do.
1. Find a working rooting program for my mac
2. Get the free version for Rom Manager
3. Find a link and download the Cognition ROM
4. Flash the ROM onto my phone and then I should be able to install APK files from my SD card right?
ugh....

Lets do 1 thing at a time.
uninstall the apps How to Once un-installed. reboot the phone.
Start again but install the free version first
What you need to do is go to the Captivate section of this forum and install Apex 12.5. It has a one click Heimdall package. Put your phone into download mode by holding down both volume buttons and plugging it into the computer. Follow the instructions and you are now running a custom ROM.

You're having him try something he is not looking for. He is simply trying to root the phone. The package from watsa/psych0phobia is #1- not I897 based and 2- a full rom. He does not want this
Please be careful in your recombination. Also once he has 10 posts he can ask further questions within that section.
@ the OP:
1st of all, why is it SO important to be able to install non-market apps?
2nd, no offense but you don't seem to have the knowledge or skill level you should really have before attempting to root your phone. So...
3rd, do some research & reading. Make sure you fully understand the terminology and procedure for rooting your specifc phone.
4th, have a recovery & rescue plan ready in.case things go wrong. And be willing to accept the consequences.

I uninstalled everything I had related from trying to root. I couldn't get the free version. All I really need is something to root my phone via Mac.

Why do you need to root via mac, when it can be done directly from the phone?
Just say anything here now, and you will have 10 posts. You will then be able to post in the Development section of the I897
