I have ported the Windows Mobile 6.x program Freda to Windows Phone 7.
The program is an Ebook reader for books in EPUB (DRM-free), HTML and TXT format.
I've published a demo video.
[UPDATE: See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=795753&page=15 for the latest version of the program.]
Is there a way to reformat the text at all? It's going to be really difficult to read with that little spacing between lines, etc.

There are options on the 'Settings' screen that allow you to:
add space between paragraphs
increase the line spacing (or decrease it to 0.9 if you want an even denser reading experience)
change font
change font size
define an external margin (a blank border) around the edge of the page
Between these, you'll probably find a way to get an appearance that works for you
i like the simplicity of your app, but somewhere i think it's to simple

I will be adding such features as:
- download from any OPDS catalog, not just Wattpad's system
- view and navigate the book's table of contents
- manage settings (i.e. save and use 'presets').
- ...
Maybe that will be complicated enough for you

I look forward to seeing this when I get my WP7 next week!
I definately need an ereader so I can read my kids books

Yep, I spent 30 mins at the O2 shop yesterday, getting fingermarks on the screen of an HTC HD7 and checking that Freda works OK on a real phone. Conclusion: it's usable, but there are a few niggles. I'll be pushing out a new release in a few days to deal with them ...

Fair dues, developing such a complex app without even having the phone!
I'm interested in particular in having an ereader that can read epub files from my own server, since we don't seem to be able to add epub or txt files to our WP7 devices just yet.
Thanks for all the hard work.
This is pretty impressive. I look forward to downloading you app! Keep up the good work, man.

The app knows how to work with any server that can produce an OPDS catalog, and I have tested it with Calibre (both using the Calibre Content Server and also the Calibre2Opds solution based on DropBox). There is one major ugliness: because of the brain-dead way that Microsoft have implemented (well 'not implemented') HTTP authentication, it only works if you set a blank password on your Calibre server. Not really an issue if you're using it on your own local wireless network, but not suitable for wider internet use.
I'm hoping Microsoft will roll out a patch for this in the Q1 release; if they don't, I can code proper authentication myself, but it will be a tedious job.
zune doesn't support epub???
thx jim
!!!great job
Is it still in Marketplace I can't find it anymore....
Sorry looked on phone and PC.

Jim, could you please check this catalog: http://81.1.213.130:8091/opds/
Freda can access OPDS but can't read epubs from that site (FBReaderJ for Android works without problems)

It's true - I admit it. Freda is off the marketplace at the moment.
There was a problem with the last update, and I have temporarily pulled it. It should be back in a couple of days.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thanks! I tried to write a review and rate it from within the Zune software, wouldn't let me do that either. (used your web site link to find it that way) There seems to be a lot of recent additions of ereaders in the Marketplace. Freda still tops them though.

Hey all!
I love my Vario III,...just wondering if any of you were using Picsel browser?
It's awesome,...the only problem is that it doesn't interpret javascript
Anyone know of a similair browser that supports javascript?
Regards
Where did you obtain the picsel browser from? I always wanted to test the functionality but could never find a download. Looks like an OEM only product.
My Vario III arrives tomorrow
i absolutly love picsel, (other than the lack of java and sketchy flash support) its the easiest browser to use IMO... too bad they never released it comercially... they could make some serious money off it

hi my friend please email cab to
[email protected]
The version that i have installed is not working on my TyTN II
I'm getting the error:
Initialisation failur....in think this is German.
the version i have installed is simply entitled "Picsel Browser.cab" and was found on torrent tracker that canadians can't use.
it isn't very useful to me, but it is a novel idea of a browser.
quite a browser indeed, reminds me of the Safari browser on the iPhone. 320x240 doesn't quite cut it though for browsing, must look better on a VGA device.
Odd that you can't go full screen, or I missed a setting ?
deepfish from Microsoft is alos very nice (very similar to Picsel browser).

got a link ?
Thunderhawk is in the same vein as picsel browser, and works a little better. Basically, it renders the page on their servers, and then sends the page to your device. It is very fast and looks by far the most like pages rendered on a PC.
However, it is quite expensive, requiring a monthly fee to use the software. But there is a free trial to see if you like it.

that would be great, i've been wanting to try out deepfish for a while now. that zoom feature would come in real handy for qvga screens.

Along with the cab, you will need the (per person issued (iirc)) beta activation code to make it work. Given that it is using a server to house the data and format it for you ... you would need that code or the server would deny you access.
jesus, what's with all the security?
Here is the old thread where i got it from, a while back...Hope you find it useful

I remember when I had my BlackBerry and upgraded to the 4.5 OS, Docs to Go was included free as part of the OS applications.

Has anybody tried it? Bit of a challenge to buy it since paid apps aren't available in Canada, so before I go to the trouble, does DTG support any real document formats, like ODT, or is it strictly limited to microcrap?

I bought it. No, at this time, it is not as good as the Palm or other version, but it works. I use it to read and edit my MS Word documents. I also used it to open a Excel document, but that really doesn't matter to me too much.
Just for you, I tried, it said it cannot open because it is not a valid MS Word 97-2008a.
Thanks for checking. Guess they won't be getting any money from me.
You know they will end up making google docs. One day.
Or you can use Shead Spreet app....I think it will read in excel data.

I agree... they need a mobile version BADLY!!!! The funny thing is, I believe Google docs. works with Windows Mobile and not Android. That is more of a browser thing but still. Its just plain stupid!!! And why does the Sapphire have a pdf viewer and the G1 doesn't?! It's about time for another RC update so JF can return to do work his magic.

I been thinking about getting that one. How well does it handle larger files (lets say ones larger than 1-2 MB?)
Google docs is pointless since it depends on a network connection. It also puts potentially security sensitive information out of your personal control (which is almost always against the rules when dealing with other people's data).

I believe they would need to make a offline Google docs app, kind of like the offline gmail app they built.
GDocs now on the marketplace. Not made by google, but looks like it has on and offline support. I am downloading it now. oh and its free.
Well tested it out, and does not work well at all, but it in early beta I think it said .21 So it has time, But at least someone is working on it.
just updated and works a bit better, It will not pull down info from the web, and update info from g1. But will not update data back down to g1. only way to is to delete doc off the phone and re download it.

I have docs to go, and it isn't even really noticeably slower opening 2+MB files. It handles them just fine. I even threw a 7MB doc file with embedded images at it, no problem.
I just had a look at that and it has a *very very* long way to go. Its basically worthless and I don't expect it to go anywhere near far enough to actually be useful. I suspect that it was whipped together in about a half hour. All it is is a text editor, it downloads the TEXT from your google doc and stores it in an sqlite3 database file. No formatting or anything. It doesn't even save the odt file to local. I seriously doubt that the author has the skills to develop a full word processor.

No but there ought to be. I use gdocs which is decent and free. And I have documents to go which only views docs but I purchased the second docs to go app to unlock document editing which ive had a favorable experience with. As far as I know those are the two options for editing documents...I think docs to go (editing version) was $20 when I bought it but may be cheaper now. I've used it maybe 5 times to edit docs and its worth it to me.
Also I've even edited docs remotely on my laptop and my desktop with phonemypc ($10 I think), one of my absolute favorite apps and I'm pretty picky about what apps I keep....
I'm really thinking of buying an HD7, but im stuck in between a dell streak.
Im using it to replace my cruddy netbook so i'll be luggin a bluetooth keyboard around.
The dell streak can connect with a bluetooth keyboard but can an HD7 do that? cuz it will otherwise be perfect for word processing with the kickstand and office.
You pose a good question but at this early stage it's like comparing apples to oranges. The HD7 right now is just a phone, literally. The Dell streak is really a tablet and full featured.
There are a million threads all over the forum about pro's and con's of the HD7. I would suggest glancing through those threads to see if any of the attributes apply to you.
How about you wait for gingerbread tablets coming out next year or maybe a honeycomb one t0o

You should also check how easy it will be to get the Word document on/off the phone. From what I read the document has to be upload to your Skydrive account first. And the mobile Skydrive page loaded in IE, not the Office hub, from where the Word document is opened. And, I may be wrong, any edits are NOT saved back to Skydrive. I'm sure I read this but hope I'm wrong.
I'm guessing editing documents will be a lot easier on Android as you'll have direct / easier access to your Google Docs.

microsoft have moved my Live office to skydrive, so now all my office live documents will be saved in my skydrive now...
I have a website that uses AppCache and I would like to know if the IE engine in Windows Phone 8/8.1 supports AppCache/Local Storage/IndexedDB.
It's more of a scripting IDE than a web page and if it works correctly it will store about 5 megs of web files into an AppCache so it could work offline. You would probably need to delete/clean internet files if you want to get rid of that.
The web page is at :
http://www.obeliskos.com/TridentSandbox
At the top left (if it works correctly) you will see status for LS (local storage), IDB (indexedDB), and AC (AppCache) ... the appcache should show downloading and then idle.
Can someone test and let me know what the status information of LS/IDB/AC are.... or if you use it, how well it works? There's a samples browser button (second from right under help) if it lets you load all the samples.
Thanks
LS/IDB/AC all work great! WP8, IE10. Haven't had a chance to really play with it yet, but you will probably want to make it more mobile-friendly. We don't have meta-keys on the phone.
hah, your all over this forum and once again with good info, thanks!
Yea I was thinking of using it just as a viewer to run prg files created on tablet/desktop and saved to skydrive. I think xbox one IE also fully supports and that has skydrive and possibly keyboard/mouse as well. I guess it might be good cross-platform for simple user programs.
Looks like I have a reason to upgrade my phone sometime soon now
