Sorry for being a noob and asking this if there is a simple answer. I searched but couldnt find the right answer.
Ok so Ive been real happy so far with Stock n1 and universal androot. I love the root apps.
Now that the update is out (2.2.1. frg83) I wanted to update and still have root access on stock. I was not able to update because i had deleted stock apps like amazon, twitter, etc with titanium.
I had to flash a stock rom and then update to 2.2.1 worked, BUT no root access.
I even unlocked the bootloader to see if that would give me instant root but it didnt.
How can i go about getting root access on my n1 with 2.2.1. ? I want to run a stock rom and use rooted apps like titanium. Also to get future updates like gingerbread OTA.
I do not want a custom rom like cyanogen. Just stock 2.2.1. with root access.
whats the easiest way to achieve this?
I tried installing amon ra, and it still wouldnt give me root access, couldnt install superuser, ect.
please help.

So I just finished up rooting my Sprint Hero, and cleaned out all the apps I didn't want. Was my main goal, so i feel accomplished. Now my question is, when the eclair update rolls out from sprint, will i be able to just update through the update service? or will that ruin the root and reinstall all the apps i was finally able to remove? Thanks for the info.
if you update from sprint you will loose root if the exploit is still present you can root but i dont think thats the case. But you can always use the RUU to flash to stock 1.5 and gain root again. When the update comes out I assure you we will have a cooked 2.1 rom with SU built in.
Thanks, just what I needed to know.
Did anyone else lose root?
Is there a fix in the works?
Yes I lost root as well.
I have a Droid 1 and I don't know why I installed the OTA update, but now my root access is gone and z4root will not get it back.
I found out there is a fix though, we just have to go through the whole manual root process again:
Unfortunately I cannot post links here, so PM me if you want the how-to on fixing this.
You should be still able to use the RSDLite method. That one is permanent..i don't think the OTA would even wipe it out. Who knows though, i'm on UD2.3

How to remove updater file
My rooted Droid with 2.2 just downloaded the recent update also, but I have not allowed it to install yet. Is there a way to delete the update so it will not install and lose root? I used z4root to root the phone (worked great...very easy). I see from other posts that after the update z4root will not be allowed to re-root. Is this correct?
Thanks

If you have the option to not update, DONT UPDATE IF YOU ARE ROOTED until there is a root fix. Myself and a lot of people have buggy phones now that root has been disabled. We're all waiting for a solution. One Click Root didn't work for my Droid.

Yes and no.
No, being z4root will not work after the 2.2.1 update.
Yes being you can be rooted once again after 2.2.1
I just re-rooted (manually) and it's working great now with 2.2.1
I've had a couple people PM me about it.
Follow this guide to the "T", don't skip ahead, read everything:

It is super fast and takes maybe 10 minutes tops.
Far from the 3 hrs or so it took me the first time I ever rooted (last June).
I was able to use SuperOneClick to re-root my phone in 2.2.1

Yep lost mine too and working to get it back, thats why I am here. z4 was the first time i rooted my phone and it made it so easy!
I actually got my replacement device this weekend and it was on 2.2.1 but last night I tried SuperOneClick the latest version and it worked fine. Also my sprecovery was still showing stock so I used my ROM Manager from the Market to flash to clockwork mod then back to SPrecovery and also was able to make a backup of my stock 2.2.1 with nandroid. Hope this helps.
I am a noob.
I followed some instructions to prepare my N1 for the OTA 2.3.3 update and messed some things up. I cleared EVERYTHING from Clokwork recovery, but, then phone would not boot anymore. So I manually loaded a Cyan 6.1 and GApps zip and got the phoen to load. Finally ran clockwork, rom manager, backed it up. Then I downloaded the stock image FR91 from ROM manager, clear cache/data and rebooted. Phone updated from 2.2 to 2.2.2. Now I have all my apps back and stock ROM, but superuser will not work. I cannot flash clockwork now, and cannot use ROm manager. Titanium prompted me to update superuser binary thru a zip file, but it will not run. Now, I tried to access recovery thru bootloader, but it just give me the Android with the ! and nothing more.
Alos, ROM manager keeps saying my phoen is not rooted, but when I bought it (used) it had Cyanogen 6.1. I know it's rooted, I get the unlocked boot screen, but why the problems now? How can I regain superuser functions to use ROm manager again?
Thanks in advance.
This is what happens when people don't read and don't understand what they're doing.
ROOT is a user in OPERATING SYSTEM = Android OS.
LOCK is a property of BOOTLOADER = a program that boots the phone.
Stock = NOT ROOTED, until you root it.
UNLOCKED = allows you to flash ROMs and other partitions directly from bootloader.
The 2 have no relation whatsoever, besides one - being UNLOCKED makes it easier to gain ROOT.
This has been discussed here a zillion of times. Do yourself and XDA a favor, please, and invest some time in reading Wiki - it points to several 101's (things to know) and guides.
So in my case I have unrooted the phone and should research on how to root again?
Thanks for the reply. I suppose I just confused myself.
So if I root again this will/will not affect the OTA update?

Wiki contains rooting guide.
Rooting won't affect OTA.
Custom recovery will affect OTA, unless signature checking is turned off in it.
You will have to root it.
A stock rooted rom will get the OTA. It will update as long as you don't remove stuff from stock. Like Amazon, twitter.
Please read the wiki.

A friend rooted his 2.2 installation to install some additional apps which requires root, e.g. a firewall. He now wants to upgrade to 2.3.3, and still keep his apps/settings/messages without a manual backup.
Will it work to just flash the OTA zips found here? We're aware that he will loose root.
I have been wondering if it is possible to root HTC one without installing any custom recovery. The issue with custom recoveries is that you can't update the phone with official updates. It's quite a pain in the ass to go back completely stock just to install an upgrade and then after updating, root again. It's not much work I know but still, if it's possible to do away with custom recovery and still have a root access, that'd be awesome. I used stock rom reset from another thread which had the option to grant root while going stock, but that didn't seem to do the trick.
