Some one please help me to sim unlock to t-mobile. I used "How to unlock/unfreeze all SGS Models" that is posted in xda as well as unlock captivate app in the market but no luck.
I installed the usb drivers windows 7 x64 can see my phone.
Is is necessary to install android sdk ?
Is it must to root the phone before unlocking ??? There is no perfect rooting procedure yet.

i'm having the same isssue
You must be rooted for this to work. Also most likely this won't work even after the script runs. People have reported that their plaintext network unlock data has been removed after flashing the JI6 leak
Same problem over here. Also I tried to root, but it didn't work, or after reflash back to 2.1, still no working.
To me the file with the unlock code is different or damage now after gone to 2.2
My Captivate was unlocked but I did not write down the code that I found from the Unlocking app that I found when I was on the stock Android 2.1.
Then I upgraded to the leaked Froyo and now the apps and the other PC apps to unlock the code are giving me a code of FFFFFFFF which is not the correct code.
I tried going baxk to version 2.1 again and the apps to unlock still shows no unlock code.
I am desperate now as I travel a lot overseas and need to use othrr SIM card. Please I need help. Here are my questions:
1- is that a way to really go back to the original factory version of 2.1 ? I tried 2 different version of 2.1 rom and not success... meaning I got no unlock code. CAN ANYONE POST A LINK TO THE IRIGINAL 2.1 ROM?
2- my IMEI number is now damaged.... even after I go back to ver 2.1 or back again to 2.2. The serial number / IMEI is now differnet than the original of my phone, which is the one under the battery. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WITH THE INCORRECT IMEI NUMBER?
This could be the problem to why we cannot unlock this Captivate or Galaxy S phones anymore... the file that contain the IMEI or EMIE and the unlock code I think it is the file located on the phone at /efs/nv_data.bin. so how do we fix that file?
Thanks a lof for any help or suggestions.
the nv_data.bin file gets deleted once u upgrade to froyo and i guess even to JH7.....
it may not get deleted but then might show wrong codes like the one uve mentioned "FFFFFF"
i guess theres no way to get the unlock code back cause once you flash from 2.1 to anyother, its a rare chance youll ever be able to get back to your 'real' stock mode...flashing back to 2.1 also wont help.....
search around the forums, there was a topic on how to set a custom unlock code, though it didnt work for many,i guess it did work for some
btw, when i opened my cappy box, first thing i did was unlocking by running the batch file....
i made a point to write down the unlock code on the box, in a diary i keep, saved it in my pc and laptop, uploaded it and saved it in my fb account...i also saved it inside my cappy as a picture...lol...u can never be too sure!!!!
also, just to point out, FIRST thing i did was unlocking...it means, i DID NOT root it...i didnt even open the applications window....just unlocked it first.....cant stress this enough
I HAAAD the same problem but i found a way to fix it =D i rooted it and enable sideloading and stuff with the unleashing beast thing. then i went to the android market and search for "FROYO" then a "Samsung galaxy S unlock froyo" was in the search (for me its the 5th one) It looks like a lock and made by DaGentooBoy. you NEEED to be rooted =D. if it doesnt work then idk and if it dies ITS NOT MY FAULT. GOOD LUCK =D

actually i have NOOO idea. i got this phone from someone in the USA and it already had froyo installed. it took me some time to get it unlocked BUT I DID IT. =) i was happy =D. the original phone wasnt rooted, had sideloading disabled. it didnt SEEEM to be fiddled around with. it was 2.1 and still is at 2.1
I having the same problem.
After upgrading to froyo, I use the "one click root" and rooted my captivate. One thing I did not know when upgrading to froyo was that my phone would be locked again !

yea...i was on 2.1 stock... used the batch file available here on xda to get the codes...also used the SGGS unlock app by dagentooboy.......
btw, when i was unlocked on 2.1, i updated to jh7 then flashed to cogv2.2beta7 it still remain unlocked....is it like a permenant unlock? ? ?
I just purchased this phone from ebay but now im worried that the seller might have upgraded to Froyo or JH7 and didnt unlock. I emailed him, just waiting for a reply. He stats that its Unlockable. So if anything....contacting ebay lol.

if you haven't flashed any ROMs, here is what you can do. go to market then search for SGS unlock, install and run it, it'll give you the code. thats how i unlocked mine. write the both codes down just in case.
No I have done nothing. It is just 6 weeks old phone. Same as what was delivered by AT&T. I did not play around with anything (like rooting, or installing beta Froyo)

try dial *2767*3855# the phone will hard reset, then try it again. i didnt have any problems unlocking my phone by using SGS unlock, have flashed some stock ROMs in the past few days and didnt have issue at all.
I think the JH7 update screwed up the easy retrieval of the unlock code.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789888
There's some info about a possible work around in there, but the guy who came up with it is apparently French and the translation to English is a little rough.
and to the OP ... my code was all numeric, so not sure why you would have had to 'spell' it to the AT&T rep.

if you have not done anything on it, i'm assuning that you haven't rooted it yet. if thats the case, get z4root from market and root your phone. then use SGS unlock to get code, choose root-code option.
It is possible that your nv_data.bin is encrypted - the only way to know is to root the phone, and view it with a hex editor. If it is encrypted, there is a web tool posted in the dev section (search 2.2 unlock) that will take the nv_data.bin and rebuild it with whatever unlock code you want.
Did you upgrade to Update1 from AT&T? I did software update from phone and it updated the version 2.1 Update1.
I have tried it after doing the upgrade and SGS Unlocker is not working.
What does hard-reset mean? Does it mean "Restor to Factory Defaults"? If yes, I can do it through standard menu entry in settings? Is this different from the method you gave? Will hard-reset reset the 10-maximum-attempts-to-unlock counter?
Thanks for replying!
No. I have not done any ROM flashing.

hard reset = master clear on odin. it wipes out everything on your phone even SDcard. it is different to the standard menu factory rest. and i'm not sure if it'll reset the 10 max counter though.

Since there are only 2 attempts left for me to unlock Captivate, what will happen if I exhaust all 10 tries? I read somewhere that it will hard-lock or freeze. Can this hard-lock be reversed? Is freeze unlock code used to reset the counter?

If it does hard lock? Then you would need to take it to an AT&T shop.
Have you tried CLShortFuse's one-click root program? I haven't tried the Captivate unlock feature - but my guess is it should give you the unlock code.
You can get it here.
I have the same software on my phone as the OP. I got the phone unlocked by using the root method of SGS. Now how did I root the phone? Someone recommended the one click root method found inside the One Click Lag Fix found in the market.
So, to recap. I got the One Click Lag Fix app. Used the one click root method. Got the phone rooted (it is a couple of steps actually - you still have to update on recovery). Now that you have superuser status, used the SGS app to search unlock code using the rooted phone method. It will show the unlock code (mine had 8 numbers). Hope this helps.
PS: For anyone reading this, AT&T DOES NOT have the unlock codes yet. Any rep that promises that you will be getting an unlock code soon is not really telling the whole truth. All it shows on their side is that unlock codes unavailable but it does not shows when they will become available. I think I read somewhere that there is a 10 months exclusivity on the Captivate (starting when it first came to AT&T, which is this last July).

One more time - this is from experience:
If the nv_data.bin file is encrypted and unlock code doesn't work or can't be found you need to rebuild the nv_data.bin file. Period.
There are instructions in the Dev section under a thread titled 2.2 unlock.
If you use all 10 attempts - the phone needs to be sent to a service center to do a low level restore - usually Samsung not AT&T.
Hey guys I habe updated via ODIN to 2.2.1 recently and I now

Yes, I unlocked my Phone on Android 2.1 EClair and it is still unlocked on 2.2.1 JPU. These are not iPhones, therefore they do not require a hack.. Hell samsung stores the unlock code on your phone!
SGS Unlocker says to me:

sorry for my bad english.
I put in my other sim card and first it asks me for a pin. So I enter the pin and the it asks me for a "network- unlock code" (i think that's what it's called in english).
Is this a used phone you bought?
I think the original owner put a SIM lock code on it. Worst case, you bought a stolen phone.
If you can put the phone to download mode, why dont you try flashing a 2.1 ROM? See if it works.

So now I want to go to Poland to visit my family and put in another sim card.
The usual Pin it asks me I enter sucessfully and then it pops up this messege:
"Siim network unlock Pin".......
-->I think this is the code I need.
When i enter *#7465625#
it says: --> Network Lock [ON]

you should try what i suggested. the link i posted comes from the the app sgs unlock. try pressing the menu on sgs unlock app and choose generate NV_Data.bin it will lead you to the link i posted earlier.
the tutorial will replace the files that locks your phone. thats why you should make a back up on your /efs folder for warranty or emergency concern.
tried it successfully with 2.2

Do you know if this could work also on gingerbread 2.3.5?
Hey everyone,
I have been trying to unlock my Captivate. It is firmware 2.2 and build number FROYO.UCJI6. I have tried the unlock on the android market and I tried the new way for 2.2 but I found it to be confusing and wasn't even able to complete teh adb pull part to get teh nv_data.bin file. Is there any online video tutorial for it? Or is there an online unlocker for liek 10 bucks who can unlock my phone using imei number or something?
Thank you!
You'll have to pay for it online unless you have a backup of your original stock. There are many sites online to do it, someone else may recommend one.
yep I am willing to pay to get it unlocked I just need a site that will be able to get the unlock code for the 2.2 version. this phone was bought straight from at&T and came with 2.2. I am trying to get it working in Canada on the telus network
i get to the point in adb where you type in adb pull /efs/nv_data.bin and it gives a bunch of information. but i dont know where the file you are supposed to upload to the Samsung Galaxy Unlocker site

SGS phones can be unlocked very easily and free.
First get root (if you don't already have it) and then start reading this:

This is the safest way AFAIK.

Firstly you will need to enable side-loading applications (that is, enable installation of non-market applications). You find this in Settings > Applications > Development (from memory - it's something like that).
Then you will need to install z4root, probably by clicking on the .apk file you downloaded. After that, it will appear as a program in your launcher. Run it, and click the button to root your phone. There have been reports of it not working on 2.2.1 firmware, but on 2.2 you should be fine.
Once z4root has done its thing, you should be able to install the unlocker, and run that one too. Sorry, I can't help you too much with this one - my phone was unlocked to start with - just make sure you follow the instructions carefully and you should be OK.

I found this great forum a few days ago and after a lot of reading I have managed to root the phone and install a few apps.
I have also been able to backup my efs folder and edit the nv_data.bin file using a hex editor as per this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761045.
However after changing the byte 01 to 00 at line 0018146 8 and reloading the file to my phone, it is still asking me for an unlock code
when I put a new sim card in. I have the Galaxy S running GingerBread 2.3.6, Baseband I9000 XXJW4. I have also tried the unlocker softwares posted elsewhere on the forum with no success. Is it possible that anyone can give me pointers on how to successfully unlock the phone please or suggest where I may be going wrong.
i don´t know, if i unterstood you right, but last year i got a new sim card, which is locked by a code by the provider (of course they told me this code). Every time i restart my phone (unless it´s in airplane mode) i have to tipe this code. So maybe in your case it is also the sim card, which is locken and not the phone..
Thanks for the quick reply, but it can't be the sim as it's on Pay As You Go in the U.K and so not a contract sim.
Did you try with Samsung Galaxy S Unlock Tool or SGS Unlock PRO?, it's on the play store i unlook mi phone with it.
Hi,
If i'm understanding you right you are asked for unlock code in the phone startup,
If that is the case i once experience the same problem with my phone and i fix it by typing the wrong codes some times untill the possible retryes are over after that my phone continue to load the OS and after that i never met the problem.

I have also tried the 'Generate Windows Unlock' tool but it seems that the graphics card in both my laptop and desktop is not compatible with the software. I have also tried the SGS Unlock tool as well as the free one from Helroz but failed to unlock the phone. The tool from Helroz successfully changed the relevant bytes according to the software, but when I rebooted the phone it was stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S start screen so I had to re-flash the software and restore the backup of my efs folder.
I have not tried the paid for tool from the market as, being a 68yr old complete newbie to the smart phone era and not yet having a wireless router, I am unsure as to how to get it. To give you some idea of the leap I have made with this phone, which was given to me by my son who has now emigrated to Australia, my current phone is an old Nokia 5110 which I have used for around 12 years.
Thanks for your help and patience.
I have now managed to unlock the phone using SGS Unlock Pro with the generic unlock option, for some reason the Samsung unlock option kept crashing. Thanks for the tip with the Pro version of the software and it seems that I have a lot to learn regarding this phone, now for a different ringtone.:good:
