[Q] Question root and flash.. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which one should start at First.. Root or Flash? to get new firmware?

For firmware you need to flash.
Then you can root and some lagfix.
But you can.root first and do a backup so you can use that if something goes wrong.

[Q] Unrooting Captivate (Gingerbread 2.3.3)

hey everyone
i've got a problem here ><" researched all day but couldn't find the answer..
i updated my phone today to gingerbread 2.3.3 KF1 using Odin and then rooted it using the Rooted Kernel and Odin so i could uninstall all those stock apps which i didn't want. now im done uninstalling them, how do i unroot my phone ? ...
You should be able to use SuperOneClick (works every time for me) to unroot your phone. Just make sure it is in usb debug mode (settings>applications>debugging).
Install z4 root app on your cappy,it is the easiest method to root and unroot.....!
Just one click in the app and your unrooted and another click your rooted.....
Easy right?
z4 root:http://www.filecrop.com/z4-root-apk.html
if the above link dies just google it !

[Q] Flashing JVT over JVS without wipe?

Hi!
I'm on stock JVS now which means I have not rooted my phone (since I've only used it for Titanium Backup anyway, I don't see big reasons to do it again.)
Can I somehow flash JVT through ODIN without wiping my phone, ergo all the apps and especially contacts (linked to facebook accounts)?
Thanks,
Smirny
You can do it in Samsung Kies, or you can backup your data, flash new firmware and then restore the data.
Hit thanks if this helped
Really? Can I simply flash an "unofficial" firmware like JVT through Kies?
The backup and restore part is not really working without Root ...

You can't. Not until it's officially out, which it's not.
However, there is a simple solution: root the phone.
If you don't want it to stay rooted for whatever reason, you can still do that:
1. Flash some kernel with root (CF-Root or speedmod)
2. Backup everything with tit. backup
3. Flash JVT.
4. Flash a JVT-compatible kernel with root (give it a day or two, and there will be one)
5. Restore everything.
6. Reflash the stock JVT kernel.
I see no flaw in this plan, anyone else?

Looks good to me.
Op, you can't flash a full firmware with Odin without losing apps.
You could always bite the bullet and realise your phones full potential by flashing a custom rom.

If you don't mind losing apps and settings you can also just use odin to flash the jvt firmware.

Well with the Custom ROMs ... I come from the "newest" Juwe version and it was very slow after, let's say 12 hours of usage. I had to restart the phone after that to get performance back. And stock JVS seems really fast right now, especially the browser.
I think I will take the root procedure, I just hope it doesn't come with any "performance enhancing" stuff =)
Thanks for the answers =)

[Q] Im going insane!!!

i love my new note!!!
but damb is this rooting and custom roms a big headache at times!
i just rooted my note using zergrush's newest version.
i cant seem to get rocket rom working.
i have rom manager and try to install from sd card.
all goes good then i get this weird "failed to verify whole-file signature"
i have reading for about 7 hours now. i need help desperately!
You need to make sure the kernel you're running is from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784 to get ClockWork Mod Recovery, rooting alone isn't enough. You will then get the CWM App (a sort custom rom manager) then you can install your ROMs.
i did step 1.2 of the second post of that thread
the zerg method using this firmware CF-Root-SGN_XX_AUT_KKA-v5.0-CWM5.zip
my note has KKA kernal
You must use 'cwm' app. Not rom manager.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
I went crazy. Lol
So what i did was use odin mobile and just downloaded the kernal provided by the link in the odin mobile.
After that i did get the cw app

So you got the i9000 and not the i9000b?
Flash cf-root kernel via. Odin.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
i have the i9000
Okay, then as i already said.
Get cf-root kernel, flash it via odin and baaam. There you got your root xP
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
but i dont know how to root it ive tried to search at google for a way to root BUJVI but i found nothing
Okay. Look for the cf-root kernel thread. Chainfire prepared a pre-rooted kernel for (almost? ) every firmware.
Look for the right one.
You know how to flash a kernel with odin?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
i dont know the way plz tell me
plz tell me all the steps cause im new at android
Download Odin. You should find it somewhere here on xda or google.
Download the cf-root kernel.
I think its a ".tar"-file.
Open odin.
If you have installed KIES, close both KIES-processes in the taskmanager.
Reboot phone into downloadmode. (Vol down + home + power)
Connect your phone via usb to your pc. A little box in odin should appear now and should say something like "Added".
Now press on the "pda"-button and browse to the cf-root kernel. Click start and if everything is done correctly, xour phone should reboot automatically. Now you should see the app "Superuser".
Hope this helps.
Anyway, im not responsible for any errors or damages to your phone
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
plz give me a link to download the compatible version for my galaxy s thank you very much i know that i bothered you
Okay.
Firt of all, here is the direct link to the CF-Root-Thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Theres a step-by-step guide by chainfire too.
Download this kernel from his site:
http://download.chainfire.eu/123/CF-Root/SGS/CF-Root-XW_DBT_JVI-v3.7-CWM3RFS.zip
And flash it as mentioned in his thread with odin
Hope this will help you out
im i obliged to use that chanefire ??
No. You could use any other kernel from chainfire. Or you can use Semaphore, Galaxian, Talon, Speedmod or any other Gingerbread-Kernel.
You can either try the 1-Click-Rooting Tool. You should find it on google and somewhere here on xda.
i cant find in one click root my device :crying: or i didnt dee it can you plz go and search for me thank you very much
One more question.
Do you want to root, to do a backup of your apps?
Or do you want to get a Nandroid-backup?
Nandroid-Backup is something like an image of your pc.
EDIT:
Anyway.
The easiest and safest way is to flash the cf-root kernel with Odin.
Follow the instructions in the cf-root kernel and you should be good to go.
Its pretty easy.

Question about rooting!! Newbie

Hey
I have afew questions. Im goin to root today but just need some advice. Im on ics 4.0.4.
Can i flash any rom i want?
each time u flash a rom do u need to flash the correct kernal with that rom or just pick a good kernal?
I want to flash that rocket rom v10 but it looks like it downloads with just a rom, is that normal or do i look for a kernal.
Cheers

This is a custom Kernel which includes root and cwm recovery, ROMs includes their own kernels, so you do not have to flash kernel every time unless you need some kernel of your choice.
The method which you want to follow is the safest method to root but it will raise binary count and yellow triangle, which can be removed using triangle away app by chainfire.
---------- Post added at 09:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:32 PM ----------
Yes you can flash any rom after rooting and flashing cwm recovery but make sure you flash some safe kernel before performing full wipe in recovery, I recommend using Abyss GB kernel for that. You do not have to download any kernel for Rocket ROM, it has its own kernel but make sure to flash Abyss kernel in recovery and then reboot to recovery and perform full wipe before installign Rocket ROM.
Speedmod kernel is good and will work on all TW ICS roms.
Follow the instructions given in Dr ketan's thread in Android developement
This method seems the quickest and its done by cursed4eva on youtube. You dont loose no data or apps. It only works for ics 4.0.
You flash cwm and then superSU and your rooted. Lastly you flash speedmod kernal by mobile odin and thats it.
This method takes afew mins and does not mess up anything. Video tutorial is great but from your replies, when i go onto flashing roms etc i just flash them in recovery as normal right??

Do not use this touch recovery method, this has been reported unsafe, you will end up with a brick in your hand. It is better you use custom kernel to root and flash cwm recovery. Flashing custom kernel does not wipe your data.
Could you please give me the instructions in steps...cause his video has no bad comments, everyone said it has worked fine without loosing no data or anything. But if its unsafe im sooooo confused lol

2. So before i find a rom i want i need to download another kernal before any wipes etc are done??
3. whats best method to flash the kernals and roms? Mobile odin?
4. Triangle away i have not yet done this but is it a must that i get this off my decive or does it not matter?
5. Whats the best rom to use for ics 4.0.4 and are their any htc sense looking roms.

Thanxxx

Okay, lets start, i used few short word as was using note to write,
Best app to backup apps is titanium backup but dont think it can restore odexed apps (apps on stock rom) so i prefer root explorer to remove apps from system and save them on sd card.
All newest custom kernels are known to be safe but better you go through kernel threads to be sure, since you are rooted now so can use mobile odin to flash kernel.
Best way to flash custom roms is cwm recovery.
And there is no best custom rom, as all are best, it depends on your choice.
Yellow triangle doesnt affect anythin except claiming warranty.
Hope this helps

That has cleared up so much for me....lol thanx
Can u flash stock roms thoe also?
As for the backups of all data, cant a nanroid backup be done? Titanium says it backs up everything but then their is a appp called mybackup which is for root and says it does the same thing. Damn maybe your way might work but 2morrow i will flash a new rom for sure so all help is welcomed....thank you kindly.
Yes you can flash custom roms but just make sure you are on one of the latest safe ics custom kernel (go through kernel threads), you can download your stock firmware as backup and backup downloaded apps using titanium backup, thats it.
Sent from my GT-N7000
What do i use to back up my stock firmware? Is that the nandroid back up in recovery
Yeh for the apps i might just use titanuim or my back up. Both of em seem to work for that purpose.
Mobile odin seems like a great app but it seems ppl just flash kernals with it but that can be done in recovery right.
Yes you can flash kernel through recovery but custom only, for stock you have to use odin/mobile odin.
Yes you can do nandroid backup but it was not recommended so far as it was not safe on ics kernels but now some custom kernels/cwm recovery are safe for it. But I personally dont use it, i have my stock firmwares on my pc as backup, best for me.

Downloading stock gingerbread for your region as backup is best in my opinion, you can always flash it through odin when required and can update via kies or OTA, You can download latest ICS as well and keep it on your PC, your wish. not sure about nandroid backup, never used on Note.
