Worth installing a new launcher? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it even worth installing a new launcher if there's technically no way to remove touch wiz? Cause basically you're just running the new launcher on top of touch wiz right?
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App

short answer: yes, no, yes, but not really
long answer: yes it's good to try the other launcher, they offer way better features, launcher pro for example
no, not really yes you can remove twlauncher, but is better to keep it for flashing reasons
yes, you are sort of running on top of it if you don't disable it
so, no, not right because you can actually disable it to not use any resources, and only turn it on when needed, so you are actually running only the new launcher
use autorunkiller and task manager, you can find both on my recommended apps list
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765081

Good response lol. I downloaded the two apps so I'll try disabling touch wiz

I run Zeam and notice sometimes that TW isn't even loaded if I remove all the icons / widgets from it and set Zeam as my default then reboot.

[Q] Does ADW.Launcher need...

...more Battery if i have Touchwiz on my Phone too?
And how can i get ADW.Launcher only (Replace Touchwiz?)
i used it for a day and battery was fine
i also had launcher pro and widget locker all installed but was using adw so no problems on battery
now to use it as default instead of tw launcher
just install it and press the home bottun u will get an option menu to choose to wich launcher and a use as default so
click use as default and then select adw launcher
keep in mind i dont know if u can re use tw with out reflash or something but again i am a n00b so each time i choose the launher i watn
Yea i know that, thats how it works for now. but i do think Touchwiz Home isent off. it feels like i could just change between them easy (home switcher).
I think ADW.Launcher is on and Touchwiz is kinda in the background... using my memory!
I would like to get it replaced fully (NO TOUCHWIZ)
You can do this by rooting your phone and then using titanium backup to uninstall TWlauncher.
I don't think that when you use ADW , Touch wiz remains in the background.
Yes, you are right. Even though Android system puts the inactive threads to sleep but they are still persistent in the memory. Getting rid of TW.Launcher will give you a bit more free memory but I don't see why it will change your battery backup performance. Unless you are using some funky add-on with ADW.Launcher which is running all the time in the background.
How is your battery backup without ADW.Launcher?
And yes, as Aldonski mentioned, get yourself rooted and get Titanium backup to remove TW.Launcher for good.
I need TW launcher to connect to kies....it won't with otherwise
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Yes it will if you remove it completely. I connect to KIES without TW.Launcher.

Honeycomb launcher

Just curious what the GTab owners that are running HC are using as their default launcher? I just flashed HC today, and actually intend on keeping it for a while. My problem is, I really miss using launcher pro on my Froyo roms. Just the ability to resize wigets and define columns and rows is invaluable. I've been reading on Xoom forums that many of it's users have actualy reverted back to ADW or LP. It's also been said that the HC widgets (scrollable) will still work, regardless of the launcher used.
SO...easy question, anybody go back to VTL or LP in lieux of the stock HC launcher? I think I'll mess with it tomorrow and see if I like it better. The one thing I think I like about the stock launcher is the long press ot add items to the home screen.
I am in the same boat. The HC launcher sucks. Sure there are some aspect that are nice but nothing that would make me stick with it as a long term launcher.
I may try my LP+ a little later.

I don't think VTL is compatible with HC.

I was running it for a while to see if I wanted to go in that direction. I never really used VTL all that much. Sometimes too much customization can get confusing. It ran fine while installed, no FCs (well, no more than stock launcher or LP, anyway) and no problems with widgets, etc. I think they probably said that it wasn't compatible for Honeycomb so that folks that install it don't come asking them to fix things. i mean, technically, honeycomb itself is buggy, so until the firmware is stable, a launcher can't be blamed for any hiccups that may occur.
In any case. I ended up installing Launcher Pro, and frankly, I'm loving it. It doesn't have the same honeycomb feel when adding items ot home page, but really, I only do this occasionally, anyway. and the app drawer isn't the same, obviously, but all in all, I like how it looks, and runs. I can use the entire screen for widgets (and resize them BIG +) and icons.
The only thing lost is the dock that's at the top of the HC screens, with search, apps, and + (add item to home screen)
well, I never use search, and I long press ot add items, so all I needed was my app drawer access. I set LP for 1 dock, no background, then added the app drawer icon to the very bottom of the "dock" so it looks like a perminant app drawer icon right above the notification bar. Looks sharp, if you ask me.

So it does. I gave it another shot and got a pretty sweet setup I think.
So I switched over to LP+ and now my battery life while not on (in standby) sucks and now I am back to the random shut downs when trying to power up from standby. The way it used to with older ROMs witch had never happened with an HC rom.
Now I could be full of it but that is me experience since installing LP+ Take it for what it's worth.

Massive redraw on stock launcher

any reason why i get Such a terrible redraw on the stock launcher? i am rooted, debloated and running hte V6 script (does it with it installed and not installed) and i get bad redraw probs...any fixes? with ADW i get nothing..but i kinda like moto lancher...
thanks!!
I believe it's to do with how much memory is allocated for the launcher and whether its set to stay resident.
I'm sure it can be manipulated in the framework somewhere probably systemui.
-smc
i just made ADW look almost excatley like the blur launcher so im ok with that..and it runs so much better..i just wish i could find the EXCATE look alike dock for adw..
Better off trying to hack the framework and work it out from there, i also prefer the stock launcher cos it's refereshingly different enough to most other launchers i've used and i've used them all including- Sony Arc, Samsung Galaxy S 2 and optimus 2x/3D launchers.
Just wish the stock launcher had an option for folders like the Arc, very handy.

Here's a fix: Move apps from Media Area to Phone if any. Tell me if this helps.
Sent from my DROID3 using xda premium
That could speed things up.
-smc
there was only one app (game time) on the Media Area and no it didn't do anything. The thing is that I'm using Launcher Pro and it is still VERY SLOW to load everything up EVERY TIME I go back to the homescreen. This phone is acting slower than my D2GG
the new blur launcher is very memory hungry. It constantly gets killed (when launching another memory intensive app), then when you get back to home (or even want to see running apps) the horrible redraw/delay happens. Especially if you have widgets on the home screen and stuff like beautiful weather, expect horrible performance out of it. I can't understand why Motorola released the phone with 512MB RAM only...
The only true way to fix this is to go ADW or Launcher Pro (or other lightweight launcher). I was long time ADW fan but it feels LauncherPro behaves better on our phones. Using it now, screen redraw is minimal if not non-existent. Happy now. (not as happy if phone had 1G RAM )
using launcher pro, when I unlock the home screen sometimes it is drawn black where my shortcuts should be and the bottom shortcut bar is displayed fine

That's been a bug with launcher pro for a looooooong time. Just slide your finger across the screen and everything will appear just fine.

GO launcher vs ADW?

The only reason why I like GO launcher better is because of the Recent, and the built in easy to access task manager.
Why do you guys use the launcher you use?
What has the least amount of ram?
Customizability?
I use go launcher personally because i like the feel and look of go compared to adw

I really like Go but I won't use it anymore because it is way too bloated for me.
Try 360 launcher. It is translated in the android apps section. Not quite as much theme ability as Go but it is pretty smooth. I use adw because it averages 13 mb of ram usage and has a ton of customization.
I loved GO purely for the locker options. Young straight to sms was sweet. But damn was it hard on my battery. I haven't tried it on Broken Out yet though
Sent from my BROKEN OUT Revolution.
I used to use GO (for about 6 months), but it's all bloated with eye-candy now. I tried ADW briefly, but it didn't really impress me.
I bought the paid version of Launcher 2 (which is basically the full version of the stock LG Home launcher) a while ago and went back to using it. However, I still run GO Contacts Ex and GO SMS Pro (on Launcher 2).
The only thing I miss is the ability to group my apps. Launcher 2 only sorts them alphabetically.
I have tried ADW, launcher pro, and shell 3D, but always find myself going back to GO launcher. I really enjoy the scrolling folder widgets you can use with folder organizer and the "eye candy" transitions are tbe best. Now that I'm on Broken Out 1.1 battery hasn't been an issue.

I am an admitted Go Launcher EX fanboy. all other launchers are just missing one thing or another. These Go guys are voracious updaters. Some call feature rich software bloated but I can't think of anything in Go Launcher that cant be turned off.
You can rest assured if you leave me alone with your device for more than 10 minutes, when you get it back it will have go Launcher EX on it.
ADW EX
For my phone, I use ADW EX. I used to be a big fan of Go Launcher EX about a year ago, but I received a widget from them that absolutely raped my battery life. Ever since then I switched to ADW EX.
For one, I think I prefer the method of putting icons on the screen on ADW EX. The dragging to a screen from a multi-screen view is a little jarring. I used to favor GO simply for the multiple app bars, but now ADW has this as well.
I guess I switched to ADW EX when I started using a modified version of ADW (VTL) on my Nook Color for its best landscape layout.
Overall, most launchers are basically the same (in portrait mode), and the ones that deviate from the basic formula (e.g. Shell 3d) end up being resource pigs with wonky functionality.
Would like to try Go Launcher. Currently running ADW on Broken Out rom. Do I have to uninstall ADW for Go to work? Or can I just install over ADW?
EDIT: Not compatible with my device? VS910 zv8

It is absolutely compatible. You also do not have to uninstall ADW. I was talking with GO's dev and he promised me he is expanding the functionality of the dock bar to allow 4 or less icons (like home which is my preference) and to have the dock icons expand to fill the dock like adwex does. Once that feature is available I will switch.

Will a custom launcher hinder this phone?

It's a nice phone but I'm a themer at heart so I would be too tempted to put Nova or something on this phone the day I got it so I could install custom icons and layouts etc. Do you think a 3rd party launcher would cause lag issues on top of Sense 5? I suppose it would also make the blinkfeed screen disappear as well?

Putting Nova will get rid of Blinkfeed.
As for lag? I don't think so.

On that note, would blinkfeed still run using CPU/battery/RAM in the background if I were to install a 3rd party launcher?
Won't know till you really try it. I use Nova on my s3 and it lags ever so slightly. I can't stand touchwiz, so just deal with it.
There are many options we have though. If not feeling blinkfeed, just move it to a different screen and don't update it, problem solved for sense.

Disable all feeds and it won't do a thing.
I suppose you could always wait until the phone gets cm10. Sense 5 and blinkfeed won't even be on the phone anymore using up your ram.
Running Apex or Nova on this phone will hinder it just like wings hinder birds.
I use Nova on my S3 and no lag at all times (AOSP ROM) but when I get the HTC One ill just leave it as it is for now
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
If you're rooted, then just install Nova, go to /system/app and change the Launcher.apk to Launcher.apk.bak and reboot. Or delete it completely. Or use Titanium, back it up and delete it.
I guess I should have specified, I meant how they'd perform on the One without root on the phone as-is
