[Q] Can you boost your Antenna - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When i say boost i mean physical make the antenna by adding to the phone's internals, i know the crappy sticker thing that goes behind the battery doesn't work and my phone seems to have the crazy problem of not picking up gsm but works fine on 3g and i just want to know if i can make my range better by using something to pick up signal better

Tilt causes speakers to make cracking and distorted sounds?

Hello whenever i put my Tilt close to my computer. my computer speakers start to make distorted and crackling sounds .. Same thing with my Car. I use an Ipod connected to my tape player, whenever i put the tilt in the cup holder next to my ipod, it starts to make my speakers crack along with making a weird distorted sound..
Does this happen to others?
Is this your first GSM phone?
-McMex
Same thing happens here. I can turn the volume all the way down on the speakers and it still will make a racket (putt-putt-putt sound) through them when near them.
I wonder how much RF radiation is going on when this happens?
Fwiw, my DSL wireless router had a warning to keep at least 8 inches away from it when on.
I believe this is caused by the RF of the Tilt (or any GSM phone). Sheilded speakers usually keep this to a minimum, but they're still affected. Really cheap speaker sets seem to be affected most.
Disclaimer: I'm no expert on electronics so sorry I can't go more in depth.
It has to do with the way the TDMA technology works behind GSM. There are bursts of RF transmissions taking place within a specified frequency. If your carrier has 3G systems in place that use WCDMA (spread spectrum) then you will not have those buzzing sounds at all since CDMA (sprint/verizon) and WCDMA systems like AT&T's 3G system are based on the fact that the handset transmits/receives on a range of frequncies thus there are no bursts of RF since the RF channel is now 12 or more MHz wide. Read up about how the technologies work. I can tell wether I am on the GSM or WCDMA system here on At&t without even looking at the phones icon to tell me by if I hear the buzzing or not. lol
Typically the GSM side of the cell operator has better signal in more places since it's on a lower freq which travels farther not all the time though. The other factor is since CDMA transmits to your phone on a wide block of frequencies, the towers generally have to be closer together to provide a high S/N ratio. So in places like a bunker or elevator the 3G signal may not be there whereas the GSM will be. I can be on 3G all day but then go into an elevator shaft and the phone no longer hears the 3G 1900 MHz signal but hears the GSM signal just fine so by the time I am out of the elevator the phone has dropped to GSM.
This is just what happens when the phone is near any kind of speakers or what not. It is when your phone is in GSM mode. EG: Edge. I don't know why it does this, but I learned a long time ago how to deal with it. Plus the kaiser has 3G so just make sure it's on that network and you shouldn't hear that noise anymore.
I use to be a Medic. This is why people are asked to turn off cell phones in hospitals. The signals from our phones will effect other electronic devices. Sometimes the effect will never present itself other times it's obvious like with speakers. My partner on the ambulance and I discovered that if we put our phones on or near the dashboard that the siren would turn on whenever we got an incoming call or message. That caused more than one embarrassing moment
I had a Motorola V3 Razr previous to this phone, and I could not have it within two feet of my work computer, but with my Tilt it is less than a foot away and I don't have static when it rings or goes online to check e-mail. I have been pretty impressed. Also since i flashed the the new radio 1.27.14.09 I have had even better preformance.
Google "GSM buzz"
Also just as fun is placing the phone (in GSM mode) near a HDTV receiver, it will cause the TV signal to drop when a call comes in.

Noise on stereo speaker

Hello,
my kaiser continuously makes zz zzz on stereo speaker.
It disappear if I make a soft reset (sometimes).
There is no active connection (also disabled with NoData), and no active phone call.
It happens with Hsdpa enabled/disabled.
I tried also to phone off and then phone on again... but problem remains.
What can be???
And what can I do??
I think also during zz zz it make radiation as during internet surf or during a phone call...
It just sounds like static/electrical interference. Are your speakers of higher end quality or are they your normal department store speakers?
The only thing you can do is to move the phone away from the speakers to minimize any interference or to shield your speakers.

Sure,
but I usually use this phone with 2 sim cards of different network providers. This happens only with one SIM! It seems as if there is an hidden connection... but using the same SIM with other phones doesn't happens anything!!
It's really strange...
I suppose also that this continuous connection drain my battery down and cover me all day of unuseful radiations!
I too have seen this with my phone, it comes and goes, soft reset doesn't seem to have anything to do with it, just seems like a bad connection. But if your sim is causing it then it might be related to an interference, please update if you figure it out.
It's my understanding that cell phone technology works in different frequency bands. And within those bands, certain frequencies are designated for specific carriers.
Assuming all of that is true, that could explain why you get interference with one sim card and not the other, because the frequency that the quiet sim card is using is either above or below the range to cause noise.
But keep in mind that my understanding of everything could be wrong so it's probably best to do some research to see if you can come up with a more definitive answer.
Btw, what two carriers are you using?
I checked better and sometimes it happens also with what I thought to be a quiet sim card. So I can believe it happens with all operators.
What is strange is that with this two sim cards no other phones (gsm, umts, hsdpa, ...) makes noises on stereo speakers... at least not during standby mode.
I can see that my battery drains down only when phone is enabled (and not in use). If during all the time phone is on it makes noises... it would mean that phone is used to exchange continuously some data with provider but without any connection.
It seems like that TYTN II wants to know if there is a better signal for example to cross from GSM to HSDPA mode.. or something like that so that it tries all the time to exchange data with provider! But this drains battery down and develops radiations!!!

help with signal

i love my diamond and most places the signal is good, but in my house my signal is crap, if i get a call i have to go outside, i have tried a few differant radios but not much change, ive also brought one of those signal booster stickers of ebay but not sure where antenna is on diamond, my wife is on orange and her samsung gives good reception in our house. just wondering if anybody can help
well in the states verizon wireless has released network extendors that can connect to your broadband internet connection and broadcast cell signal, thou looks like your overseas so i'm not sure if any the gsm carriers have anythign like that, thou they do make cell phone boosters or amplifiers that would increase your signal
you said the other phone has good signal in same location, here you could grab that tower id and edit the prl with it or change home sid so that phone talks to it but at the risk of possible roaming charges depending on your carrier,
i'm guessing you have a gsm diamond? if so i think your version of PRL is called internernational roaming database or IRDB, not sure if it can be modified on the gsm side but might be worth looking in to unless you want buy cell booster ( good ones are usually $200us or more i've seen some over 1k but should get decent one for 200
you mentioned sticker antenna most the cheap ones i've seen are groundplanes that hide between the batter and phone, thou not sure that would be good spot, thou if your refuring to an actual antenna that use proimty to transfer signal instead of connection, the internal antenna on most phones is on the back at the top
thanks for your reply runkittyrun, ill look into your thoughts

Signal strength bars fluctuating

Hi guys, I just got my Incredible S yesterday, and I absolutely love this phone!! The only problem so far is the fluctuating signal bars. I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed here, but it seems to me that when I hold the phone...my signal gets weaker. When I put the phone on down..the signal gets stronger. Does a rubber or silicone case help as far as limiting signal interference?
Are you talking wifi signal or 3g signal?

I'm talking about 3G/H. It's such a shame. I really liked this phone, but designing the antenna on the battery cover is a huge flaw. What were they thinking?!!??
I also have the signal strength fluctuations. I have tried everything: changing the SIM card, changing operators (Swisscom and Sunrise), changing settings GSM alone, WCDMA alone, and GSM/WCDMA auto, and soft reset. The only thing I have not yet tried is a hard reset.
I wonder if somebody else has the same problem? The consequence of this problem is that often times the quality of the calls is lousy and/or the calls are dropped.
Please help me..
Have to say, my signal level is dreadful compared to my bog standard Nokia mobile phone in low signal areas, I get no signal on my Inc S while 2 or sometimes 3 bars on my Nokia. It's really spoiling an otherwise brilliant device. One thing I was wondering is if changing radio from the 22_M to the 27_M might help, anybody know what the difference between them is ?
and, data does not work over 50% of the time on gprs, but fine on hsdpa/3g/edge, don't know if that's also down to poor signal reception ?
I had the same problem with my IS. when the internet connaction GSM/WCDMA auto i had many unexeptable call ends. I put the internet connection to GSM only and every thing is ok. Acording to info i have the problem is in some operaters new software when the network type changes the telefone cannot change it normaly.
After visiting other fora, I have a crucial question to ask: is the reception problem (fluctuating bars, dropped calls, WiFi disconnecting) a generalised problem, or, rather, is my phone faulty, and therefore should I have it repaired?
HTC update the radio module immediately....

I also believe that the desire s has this same problem they are similarly designed devices now running with very similar software.
even though at times signal can be great without moving it can drop to nothing and I'll lose all signal, which I believe has caused me miss several calls as they've gone to voicemail rather than ring on the phone.
I'm hoping that an upgrade to the phones radio will fix/improve this over time (the optimistic outlook)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
signal
its the antenna design =Fail , put it flat on a desk and dont hold it and watch your signal go up pick it up and its like an hour glass going down
I am now arriving at the conclusion that sound quality and dropped calls (and bars fluctuating) can be explained by a connection problem when using GSM/WCDMA Auto. The problem disappears when using GSM Auto. Any views?
Same here, but it is better on "wcdma only" either. I'm suspectinig it has issues only when switching between wcdma and gsm

S8 Battery Usage with Network Extender?

I actually have an unlocked S8 on Verizon, but I think the question is generally applicable to all of the firmware versions.
I recently switched from AT&T to Verizon. While the switch has been great in general, it has lead to low signal in our basement where my office is located. While calls/texts seem to work in the basement, I'm noticing reduced battery life due to the reduced signal.
I picked up a (3G) Network Extender to try to improve the situation, but it seems to behave differently than I would have expected. I wasn't thrilled to have to disable VOLTE in order to use the extender at all (since it isn't the LTE version), but the bigger issue is that it *seems* like the device is still using the cell towers except when there is an actual incoming or outgoing call. Is that correct? What does that mean from a battery usage perspective?
In the end, I'm trying to figure out whether there is any real value in using the extender if it doesn't improve battery life? Can anyone comment?
Thanks,
Craig

The 3G extender only routes when there is data going to or from your phone (phone calls). You should see a little icon indicating that you are connecting to the extender. I had 2 of the 3G extenders, neither did anything to help my cellphone battery. I also had continuing issues with losing the GPS sync signal almost daily, even with the external antenna connected and outside away from the house. Verizon has also said that they are "retiring " 3G at the end of 2019 in my area. I bought their new 4G extender, and it works like a miniature cell tower - phone is always connected to it when in range, and it does seem to help with the battery life. Data / messaging / VOLTE works *much* better. Best of all, GPS lock has been solid with no drops at all. If you bought the 3G extender from a Verizon store, take it back and get the 4G instead - works sooo much better!

This is good to know. I actually bought this off of EBay for cheap, so I can't easily swap it out. At that point, I didn't understand the behavior of the device and phone.
