Hello,
I just got a Captivate from AT&T, quickly I found that i need to press the lock key tens of times a day as I set display off at 30 sec.
Unblocking the phone does not bother me but I am concern if this sooner than later will break the lock button, so I would like to hear your comments with the 15 days I have to return the phone.
Also, is there any app that let me turn off the screen and re-activate the phone just touching the screen.
Thanks
Maybe try an application called Screebl?
It won't activate the screen when you touch it, but it will keep it alive while you're holding you're phone. So you can set your screen timeout to 15 seconds, but while your phone is tilted a certain way, it'll keep the screen on. It'll at least save you the need to push the power button to turn the screen back on while you're using it.
You might also be able to use Tasker to wake up the screen when the phone detects motion or held a certain way (but i'm not too sure about this)

I had an iphone for 2 years and pressed the home key for everything... on and home - so I am not to worried about the captivate.
Thanks for the comments
"no lock" on the market can disable the lock screen so that you can unlock with just the button. There is also a setting for the time before the screen turns off, I find one minute much better than thirty seconds.

I may be missing it but was hoping for a way that you could set the phone's screen to go off after X amount of time (say 1 minute) but still be able to just press the lock button to turn it back on), but for it to turn off and also passcode lock after Y amount of time (maybe 5 minutes) so that you don't have to either have the passcode lock off completely or on completely, but set on a certain amount of time...
I probably just made no sense, lol

you mean just like the iphone where passcode doesn't kick in till after the phone's screen has been off for a certain period of time (that you pick in settings).

Ummm yep, that's pretty much what I mean
If possible this would be great!
There is an app called lock delay in the market that will do what you are looking for.

Ooh, any idea how it interacts with no lock? I think I'll try it and see.

There is an even better app, that does EXACTLY what you are talking about. It's called Pattern Control, it's free from the Market as well. I use it now after trying about 6 different apps. Only problem is, it will NOT work on FroYo.

Well, I tried Pattern Control, and it does NOT do what I think is being said. On mine it said that since no pattern is set up, it can't do anything.
First we are not talking about the time before the screen dims and goes black. We are talking about the time before the screen goes into lock and requires a swipe (assuming there is no lock code on the phone) to get back to usable screen. Screen indeed may be black, and touch on power button brings up the "Phone locked" screen.
We want to be able to set the time before THAT lock happens to be longer. Ok if screen goes to black as set in Settings>Sound and Display>Screen Timeout, but we want it to still be unlocked (until the lock time we set is reached) so that when brought back to life before the lock time expires, no swipe is needed.

Just got the diamond2 and am loving it. Came from the touch pro. Problem is I have been pocket dialing while its in my leather case. This is not good, as I am a real estate salesperson and it is calling some important people. Does anyone have a solution? BTW, I was using touch lock pro on the touch pro.
Thanks!
hi lorettaboy
you should lock the kets by holding the end call button for a few seconds and that should sort your problem out
I forget what it's called but there is this locking software that will completely lock the phone if you rotate it around the long axis one way and unlock if you do the same the other way.
I have been using throttle lock though. It is like the Android unlock screen where you draw patterns.
If u press the power on/off button for a second, the screen goes off.....isnt it ok to avoid your problem?

I think what may be happening is that the power button is being pressed while in the case unlocking the phone and keys. I had this happen before and still does sometimes when in my pocket.
4 characters: S2U2
Hoping wm6.5 features a lock that's as functional as S2U2.
I personally use http://pocketshield.netserver01.com/ It locks your phone when its closed, and you have different ways to 'wake' it. the 3 that I set it currently is:
1. if the phone is in the case (aka dark) it will not unlock even if phone is ringing, but once you remove it from the sleeve/pouch it will be unlocked.
2. If its night time and the above prevents you from unlocking in the night, shaking phone left to right once will unlock it
3. lastly if I take out stylus it will unlock.

Googled it, light sensor lock sounded interesting, tested it. Never got the light sensor unlock to work. Had to keep tapping the lock button for a varying number of times to unlock. But worse: got catch-22-ed twice within ten minutes.
The first time I got caught with the screen on, the 'turn off' dialog active, and Touch lock Pro active but not clickable because of the turn off dialog. No way to unlock the device and the power button was hijacked by Touch Lock Pro. Removed back cover, took out battery and restarted.
The second time the device locked with the screen off, and the power button couldn't turn the screen on again. No way to find out what happened this time. Removed back cover, took out battery and restarted.
This tool is possibly the least compatible tool with the TD2 you will ever find
In short, my power button is jacked up and at moment due to car troubles I have zero monies to even attempt to call HTC and see if they can do anything about it.
So I would like to know, is there an app that will allow other hardware buttons to power off the screen, or at least make a widget or something on the homescreen to power the phone off?
At the moment I am keyguard disabler to bypass using the power button to cut on the screen, but can't really do anything to cut the screen off.
I will work some on seeing if I can modify the keylayouts, but if anyone else knows anything, any help would be greatly appreciated.
only problem i see with the widget use is that once the screen is off, how would you turn it back on... remapping the hardware buttons would work, but then you wouldnt need a widget...
in the meantime just set the timeout on the screen to something small... just an idea i guess...

I use keyguard disabler which then I can use the trackball to cut it on and yeah, when I'm at work, I just cut it to 15 seconds so it doesn't stay on forever whenever I need to check the time.

may help.
I do agree with the shorting the awake time. I did this to change mine to 5 seconds. I installed lock 2.0 and then changed the settings to 5 seconds, rebooted and then uninstall lock 2.0. If for some reason I need the screen on longer to read web or email I use stay awake app. I have stay awake in the status bar. I haven't had good luck with the apps that make the screen stay awake like keyscreen and screeble.
This one aspect of my phone has been really bugging me. We don't have the option to disable the automatic locking of our phones. You could enable an infinite screen timeout, but that doesn't really solve the problem as it introduces a new problem (increased drain on the battery due to the display being on the whole time).
It'd be nice if we could control those two settings independently. One is to be able to control screen timeout, the other would be to enable/disable autolocking our phones.
The reason this is useful for someone like me is that I usually leave my phone on the desk when I'm not using it. In my situation the auto-locking is just a huge pain because I'm not worried about accidentally hitting any buttons while the phone is on the desk nor am I worried about security/privacy issues.
Anyone see a need?
I think lockbot gives you an option of how long before the lock screen goes into affect if you'd be willing to use an app for a lock screen...

Well... I'll answer your question... But this won't be helpful (Just a warning )
A need? No.. I honestly don't find it troublesome to swipe my finger across the screen after pressing the trackball (or Power button if you're not rooted/haven't setup Trackball Wake)
So, I don't really see a need. But good luck finding someone to accomplish your request. Just seems like it'd be a fair amount of work, to remedy 1 seconds time... Just my $.02
Try ScreenModeWidget at market, free.
choose awake stay.

Look in the market for "curvefish" he's a developer of widgets and has a lock screen on off widget that will let you turn it off then back on without having to reset the pattern. Hope that helps!
Keyguard disabler on the market. It works for me. I set it after a reboot and it works. It has a option to start on start but I just do it manually with the shortcut.
actually, i've been looking for the same solution as you are looking for! even i find it highly anoying when i keep the fone on my desk and have to sweep the screen each time i want to check it.
ideally, i'm looking for something likr what u get in the 5800.... the screen comes back on (after timning out) when you tap on the screen, unless u lock it explicitly via the hardware button...
neways, u kud try "no luck" which simply disables the lock screen. when the screen times out, pressing the hardware "home' or "lock/unlock" buttons brings the screen back on without having to go thru the unlock procedure...
Cheers,
I've been using touchscreen smartphones since the Omnia came out and never once have i needed a lock screen. I can't for the life of me work out why anyone would need anything more than a screen off/screen on button.
I'm using No Lock from the market now. It has a handy toggle widget/icon for enabling or disabling the lock function. As a bonus it allows screen wake on Trackball and volume buttons.
+1 for No Lock! It's the best way to get around that swipe pain.
So, I downloaded and launched it perfectly... everything so far i tried is working fine except the lock screen... Some times when i press the Cancel key the button lights lid up but there is nothing on the screen and sometimes it appear the lock screen but nothing happen....
Do someone have any solution to this...
Thank you.
I have the same problem. I have been reading that possibly going back to an older kernel / roofs fixes this problem but have not seen and confirmed reports.
Can anyone confirm this and what version?
Thanks
Same problem at me. Both builds are running very fine for some tine but after that are running slow.I don't know why. Maybe is somehow related with the lockscreen problem?
I have this problem as well i get lucky if i manage to move passt the lock screen and the OS runs really slow it takes like 20 seconds just to open the app screen and the app screen laggs like no to morrow how come so menny ppls can get it to run just fine but i cant it makes me sad face
+1 one for me... I have got a TOPA100, it's almost impossible to wake up the device, sometimes the lockscreen is visible, but it's impossible to move the unlock slider. Usually I need about 10 times and something around 5 Minutes to wake up the device.
Same problem here, would be great if this can be fixed...

For me it's the same and the battery runs only for one hour, I think a (system?)process is running with 100% CPU time. I am new to android, so I don't know where to look.
Same here on an AT&T Pure. Sure would love to get this fixed however I'm reasonably noob to the Android world (not completely novice to linux in general, and I have successfully flashed my AT&T TyTN II thanks to this site.) Fixing this would be a huge help!
Thanks
More specifically on my device I encounter. The following:
- Turn screen off via end button.
- Turn on screen via call button.
HW button lights come on for a few seconds then cut themselves off.
Screen does not turn on at this point.
- Turn on screen via call button again
- Screen comes on with HW button lights
about half the time screen is unresponsive and will not all me to unlock with swipe of finger
Other times will accept input and unlock to the home screen
When unresponsive repeating entire process above will likely allow me to unlock successfully.
Thanks!

my screen never wakes up
end up using soft reset to windows mobile
(it could be something to do with startup??)
Is there anyway to have active display always show up as my main lockscreen every time i click the power button?

Nah, just get used to triggering it if you need it. I hardly ever find myself needing to use the normal lockscreen, personally, I just sort of adapted. If I want the screen to turn on without picking up the phone, I move it a half-inch to the left, and Active Display pops on. Of course it's already on when I take it out of my pocket, or pick it up. Never had a need to activate it any other way.

Same here. I never use the power button to turn my phone on, the active notification screen turns on quite literally every time I go to use my phone. It's brilliant.

Combined with a turn screen off widget/app and a mute widget/app, I never use any buttons on this phone.
You can do what I did and disable lockscreen completely. That way only active notifications will show when you pick up the phone.
