[Q] "0" in spareparts, drains my battery! - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am running the latest nfxhero rom and i noticed that whenever i have mobile data on, my battery drains really really quickly, its amazing otherwise! I opened up spare parts to see what was wrong, no partial wake problems but when i look at the network usage, there is a program/service/whatever "0" that is full and when i click on it, i get an fc. I have no other way of figuring out what that is so if anyone else has had this problem please help me out...

0 means root. Means some app with root privileges is constantly running and connecting to the net

That doesn't sound like a good thing...or am I just being paranoid? Why is it called '0'? Shouldn't the process be identified by more than a single cryptic digit?
sleepy

i had permissions for gscript, root manager, quick boot and set cpu in superuser.... none of those really use data except for ads....
anyway, i removed all except for set cpu lets hope that fixes it.

It won't fix it. 0 is always the highest network usage and it is hard to tell what it is. In linux root runs a lot of processes in the background.
If you turn off active sync, does that reduce the amount of use? With mine it did. So I think that is one of the biggest users and I am just guessing that active sync runs with root authority.

Ohh ok that makes sense, ill try disabling sync

Set cpu was a big hog for me. Just fyi.
And 0 is not my biggest network hog anymore by the way.

SetCPU Setting/Profile Suggestions

I had rooted my Hero a year or so ago with Android 1.5, and recently upgraded to 2.1 which lead to a great deal of lag at all times namely while using any Phone functions. I rooted the 2.1 and have been using ZenHeroFX 2.0 ROM with the Darchstar - Standard_vUV2_710 kernel for a few days now. Phone performance still has been pretty laggy with the overclock on many functions. however, most annoyingly I've been having the same problem others have been, extreme lag answering calls to the point of missing them constantly.
I installed SetCPU today in an attempt to address this and tried to look around the forums for some good settings and profiles for the Hero. My battery life has always been excellent but was looking for more of a performance boost without sacrificing TOO much on the battery life front. I saw a few scattered ones but was looking more for people's complete profile setup to find the best or close to it.
Here's what I'm going with for my initial setup:
Base Settings: 768 Max + 633 min
Screen Off: 480 Max + 245 min [priority 95%]
Charging/Full: 768 Max + 710 min [priority 85%]
Battery <21%: 537 Max + 245 min [priority 75%]
Battery <66%: 710 Max + 537 min [priority 65%]
I haven't messed with any of the advanced settings at all. I'm basically going to see if I notice any difference with these and I guess just play around to maximize speed and battery performance.
Can I get some feedback as far as my settings go as well as some of the settings more advanced users than myself are using?
The settings that those OC kernels run at are already optimal, you wont lessen lag by running setcpu also, probably just make it worse.

Check that your 'Slot Cycle Index' is at 0. It's how frequently your phone 'checks in' to the tower to see if any calls or messages are coming to your number.
Pull up the Dialer and type in ##DATA# (DATA=3282 fyi)
Choose View Mode.
Then select Advanced.
Scroll down until you see Slot Cycle Index and it should show a number. I think the Hero's default is 2. If you take it down to 0, it will make your phone check-in to the tower much more frequently (like every second as opposed to every 4 seconds or something like that), which lessens your phone call lag a great deal. I changed this a few months back and haven't missed any calls due to phone lag since then.
You'll have to choose Edit mode to actually change that value, and you'll need your phone's MSL passcode from Sprint to do get into that.
If this isn't the problem then I'm not sure what to suggest.

After all this modding done to my phone, how come I've never seen seen this mentioned ?? Anyway this sounds great! However, it sounds like battery life would suffer as a consequence...? What are your experiences with this tweak?
Edit: here's an easy way to get your MSL without calling sprint:

I haven't noticed any negative effects on my battery life in everyday use, still lasts me a full day with all the stuff I normally do on my phone.
It does drain your battery a bit faster if you're in an area with really weak or no signal, but that's all I've ever noticed.
I able to view the settings... slot cycle is set at 2. However it requires a password to change it. Any clue on which password it is? I tried entering nothibg but it didn't work.

Battery life analysis: myths and reality

After going through lots of pain with my Vibrant (Galaxy S) to try to maximize battery life and hearing discussions on here about removing this or that to extend the NC’s battery, I thought I’d apply the same analysis techniques I learned from the Vibrant to the NC.
Thanks to many smart people (BruceElliot) in the Vibrant forum, I was turned onto an app called System Panel, which gives historical monitoring of battery usage and the apps that consume them. Here is my analysis.
First, I reimaged my NC and returned it to factory state just to be sure none of my user settings would muck this test up. Then I updated to 1.0.1 and used AutoNooter to root. Next, using the paid version of System Panel, I set up monitoring and left my NC on over night (no use). I looked at it this morning. The first picture (SummaryBarGraph) shows the historical battery usage for the past 8 hours (ignore the spikes at the end, I was actually reading a book). As you can see, there are some micro spikes while the device is “sleeping”.
Next, I looked at the top apps that have been consuming power. The second picture (TopApps) shows the apps the percentage of power they consumed over the past 8 hours. As you can see, it is very little. If I click on “System Processes”, you can see more processes running underneath it. The third picture (SystemProcessDetails) shows that there are just a handful of apps. The top one is “Suspend”, as it should be as this is when the devices is sleeping.
My conclusion:
If phone or mms or other telephony services was one of the processes listed, I could see how removing the apk would have an effect on battery life. The fact that they are not listed proves those apps have no bearing on battery life. While removing them probably does not hurt, the "increases" people see are fictional.
If you feel the need to remove those apks, I would suggest getting TitaniumBackup and just "Freezing" them. You can unfreeze at anytime with out adverse effect and not worry about screwing anything up.
Yep, System Panel works great, I've owned it for months and have it running in Monitor mode 24/7 on my Nexus One and the NC.
I seem to always have 1-2% CPU going when idle on my NC, but I have several widgets which are probably doing something nearly all of the time at any given moment...
Regardless, I see about .2%/hr battery usage in suspend and a nearly constant 8%/hr while the NC is in use regardless of wifi, and with the screen at maybe 5-10% brightness, not sure what the exact level is.
Thanks for taking the time to verify that the phone related apk's really seem to be a bit of a false positive when it comes to actual battery usage. It could be that with a heavily configured device partial wake consumes more battery than a device which doesn't have stuff running, widgets, etc... That'd be a bit hard to determine I'd think, however.
Regarldless I renamed the phone apps a week or so ago, but I am inclined to think there's really no difference on the battery life in the end.
Thank You. I too saw no improvement in battery life by removing the phone and telephony apks. Not having the phone apk caused reboots when i put the NC to sleep. Reinstalled the phone.apk and reboots stopped. At least in firmware 1.0. I have not gone back 1.1 yet.
Great Post, there were many questions of whether this saved battery life or not. Thanks.

Nonsense, the phone apk's have nothing to do with the reboots from all of the observations on the long thread about this.
Why would you mess with 1.0.0 FW? It'll automatically update you 1.0.1 and hose your install....
Thanks for the info, makes sense these app wouln't have any impact in the absence of the related hardware.

Reading the other threads is what got me thinking about it. Its not the phone process that kills the battery, its the radio. And if the Nook doesn't have a radio that is activated, than how can it be using power?

It's not the absence of the phone.apk but the way it is removed. If there were any system dependencies on that file and it all of the sudden went missing, I could see why he'd get some FC.
It's like deleting a exe from Program Files instead of using the uninstaller on a PC.

Two reasons I'm still on 1.0:
1. I changed otacerts name and, after several weeks, there have been no automatic updates, crazy system restores, or Bigfoot sightings.
2. Dolphin HD successfully changes your user agent (all except Android) on 1.0. People on 1.0.1 have reported that none work.
When you say freezing apps do you mean using adb to disable the package?

No, TitaniumBackup has an option to freeze. It's different than using adb.

Did you have softkeys installed? Mine was rebooting too when going to sleep with wifi on and it stopped doing that after I removed the softkeys app thanks to a comment I saw in another thread. Replaced with Button Savior and no reboots with the said apks disabled (I didn't remove them, just renamed).

What about trying this with those two files renamed and see if that changes the battery usage?

I thought about doing that but the issue is that there is no phone process running for me to monitor. Doing the same process on my Vibrant shows the the phone process is indeed running and using power. Here, nothing.
I might do a comparative test to measure battery life drain per hour while idle, but I don't think its necessary at this point.
But is the System Pannel deserve your trust?

Is my galaxy note normal?

Hey guys just got my galaxy note 2 days ago. And i've noticed the battery is insanely terrible. I don't know if this is normal among all galaxy note users but well i'll post the pics and let you decide. Basically my Galaxy note sits on my table doing nothing while i use my galaxy s2. So i doubt its due to me fiddling with it.
Please i beg of you someone help me perhaps changing my kernel or something, from what i see alot of the kernels are unstable. Thanks a bunch guys the pics have been attached btw.
Looking at the image, you do have WiFi and constantly with roughly half the time with the phone awake, whether you use it or not just having the WiFi switched on is gonna have an affect on the battery.
Looks like something is keeping your phone awake. If your phone sits there and does nothing with the screen off, I got almost 2 days out of it.
Plus is your phone rooted or stock?

Ah ok that reminds me i saw a video on youtube a few guys said that the galaxy note if running on wifi really slams the battery. Ok noted.
Also one more issue i have an app killer running on my phone if you noticed at the top. Once in a while i clear the memory and it says i got like 500+mb of free memory, then for some reason later when i power on the phone and clear memory again it says i only got like 200+mb of free memory. The usage of memory seems to fluctuate randomly any idea on this?
You could try and download betterbatterystats and see what is keeping your phone from sleeping. The pictures you put up suggest that your phone is not sleeping during standby.
100% wifi fault, install GreenPower and your problems will be gone.
One more thing to disable is the voice talk wake up command:
Double click the home button, press menu then settings, scroll to "Wake up Command" and if it's enabled disable it.
after making those two changes I've gone from 8 hours of moderate use to almost 20.
Good luck!

WHY are you using an app killer? The result is that it (the app killer) kills your open apps and then Android will start them up again, and it will use more battery since it has to start apps over and over again. What's the point of having 1GB RAM if you're not going to use it?!
Android can manage the RAM itself. Android is not Windows.

[Q] Hello guys I'm new here.

Hello guys, it is great to finally find some place like this online!!!
I have a LG Revolution by Veriwon Wireless, and as you can see in my nickname, I really hate LG Revolution because I cannot delete any of stupid bloatwares that have been installed on my phone nor call or go to different menus within two seconds.
The phone is getting slower and slower and I'm almost about to have a mental breakage... I once thought about throwing this #$#$ out and get a free, txt and camera (no video) only LG Glare or something....
Guys do not direct me to weird codes and all that but can any of you here help me through the process of rooting the phone and putting? flashing? the ROM please? T^T
I once tried to do one-touch rooting or whatever but my phone kept on connecting back and forth while after I ran the one-touch rooting program.. and nothing worked. My phone is just too slow to do anything and it takes 5 seconds to actually go to a call function.
I paid freakin 300 for this and I wanna get some use of it.....
How do I root this and put on gingervolt or whatever???? T^T
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SAVE THIS POOR KID!! T^T
And just FYI.. I have a Windows 7 64bit Desktop which I tried to root my phone with but ended up failing.

Sounds like this is your first smart phone. To try and help speed out and stuff get Advanced Task Killer this will help kill the apps once you're done using them. Use the link the guy above me provided to root it once you're done You'll be able to get into CWM once you're in there make a Backup before you do anything. Once you're there then you can install a ROM such as GingerVolt which the link for this is here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326542 For the first couple of days after you've flashed GingerVolt your battery life won't be as good as it is now until the Phone is use to the new settings which you should notice more battery life once this is done sometimes worse.
Yeah, root it (follow directions EXACTLY !!!), and then Gingervolt it. NO Bloatware & once you have done both, you will have the confidence to use the Stock app installer to replace anything from the stock ROM that you want to.
Ed
I did mine for the first time last week and if you follow the directions its a snap. You will be amazed at how the phone will perform one you install gingervolt rom.
Just be patient and follow every step. Don't be like me and forget to put the phone into USB De-Bugging and Internet Connection.
Welcome. This is a great forums, and most people are here to help. Good luck with rooting, as mentioned, if you follow directions to the letter it is very hard to break anything...and if you do, these guys are awesome at getting your phone back and running in no time at all....

Follow this, except don't use a task killer. It will actually just kill performance because your phone will just restart everything the task killer closes, which drains the battery and lowers performance. Task killers are evil and for people who don't understand how android drops apps into inactive mode when they're not displayed on screen and doesn't use much of the phone resources (unless of course the program has been killed and the phone has to actively restart it).

It all depends on the permissions that are set for the app. Like I play Cut the Rope on my phone once I'm done I'll kill it with my task killer but it won't restart itself since the permissions aren't set to re-run the app once it's killed.
If worried about apps restarting get Gemini and change the startup permission. Have to be rooted though.

I'm not worried about them restarting, because 90% of the apps that a task killer would kill are apps that I use on a regular basis anyway, so they would be restarted by me launching the app. My point was that if a program isn't on the screen, it's dumped into the memory and remains idle until you go to use it. It uses very little phone resources, so killing the apps doesn't improve your phone much. Using gemini prevents apps from starting automatically, but they start and continue to run when you open them. But since it wasn't idle in the background, certain apps take forever to start, and that's even more annoying. Bottom line, root your phone, add GV2.0, don't use task killers or gemini. They're just a hassle, drain your battery, and provide no improvement to your phone.
I still use GV and my phone starts to get laggy. I use Gemini to kill apps and clear my cache alot.

I posit that doing that is why your phone gets laggy. I'm on gv2.0 with zram enabled and using rom toolbox pro to set min/Max to 245/1501 with smartass governor, and i have had 0 lag since flashing 2.0. I flashed it within a few hours of MT posting it too

My phone isn't laggy at all and I use task killers to kill apps frequently on a daily basis. I'm on GV2.0 1501/546 or something not sure of the exact number for min. But my phone runs perfectly fine when I kill apps with a task manager.
Anybody recommend a certain app to set Cpu with that's free?
So after you are rooted, and swap out your ROM with something decent, then lastly I suggest a name change...

Does S-Off hurt battery life?

I've noticed a significant drop in battery life over the last few months corresponding directly to when I S-off'd my device. I've RUU'd, wiped, reformat, all of the usual stuff to make sure it's not crud apps, sync off, wifi scanning off, google now off, etc etc.
The reason I'm wondering about specifically S-off being the culprit is due to the clause HTC includes at the beginning of phone setup.. 'regardless of your 'contact htc' option, your device is considered a test device so it doesn't matter what you choose, your phone will always talk to HTC' (paraphrased). If the phone is capturing and updating various testing metrics to HTC it's never really sleeping and constantly keeping a data connection alive (even if very little data is sent).
I'm attaching a screenshot of what really 'broke the camels back' (or however it goes..). I'm not sure why wifi is shown as being on, it is most definitely turned off from the drop down panel.
Less than 5H of the phone being off the charger, less than 30M of screen on time.. something is keeping it alive and I have no idea what. This is a fresh install, I wiped the phone (w/ no restore) 3 days earlier. Amazon, Plex, Chromecast and Netflix installed. (amazon downloaded an album i had purchased, but that's it)
I've never had good battery life, but this is now in abysmal territory.

S-OFF won't affect battery afaik, because on my One I'm getting the same battery life as I did before I did S-OFF. Try using a wakelock detector to see what's affecting your battery. Also, try flashing a custom kernel (such as Kangaroo Kernel) and see if that improves battery life.
No.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but rooting, custom recoveries, S-off, changing pretty much anything that isn't the OS or the kernel will not affect the operation of the device. It will only ALLOW you to change it.
On a side note, you know what scares the living crap out of me? When I'm on a stock ROM and the Dialer asks for superuser. What the hell is up with that?

System apps in a stock ROM usually already have Super User permissions. When you root and install SuperSU all apps must ask for super user permissions again. There's a check box in the settings to auto allow them. Previously I don't think regular SuperUser made system apps get permission again.

Yeah I should have googled it before posting lol . Thanks
I S-Off'd on 1.55 Modified and have not seen any change in battery life, it should not be depended on S-Off but rather the Rom and Configuration you are using.
