[Q] Alternative to Handcent? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an other MMS apps as an alternate to Handcent or Chomp?
My main issue with Handcent is that it takes too long to get text notifications. They're instant with the default Froyo Mms.apk. Handcent takes an extra 2+ minutes for texts to show up.
I'm willing to try Handcent longer if someone knows how to make it receive texts faster. I enabled auto retrieve and roaming auto retrieve.

Kill the pop up on handcent, that speeds it up a lot.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

Popup is disabled... I'm not talking about phone lag. The texts just don't show up instantly like they do with the default Mms app.

Then just use the stock. I just dropped handcent because it's too bulky.

There's that, Chomp SMS. I also just use the stock app.

I haven't seen any other sms apps that actually handle sending/receiving texts. Only widgets or popups and such

If you are looking for another texting app, go sms is decent too. Not sure if this will help you, but another option

I used this App for a couple of weeks since I fell in love with the black theme and pop up was 5 times nicer than the Handcent one but I found even Handcent to be quicker than Go SMS. But it is still an App I suggest giving a shot. I might even give it another chance to see if the updates have fixed it up a bit.

I just started using Go SMS the other day and like it a lot. I have been using handcent for a year now and Go SMS seems a little faster and doesn't have all the fluff I didn't use anyway.

was using hancent/chomp/gosms for some time now. just switched back to handcent. to be honest they became quite alike over time. it felt like chomp was always a little behind. no idea what's causing the lag on your phone. although i'm using handcent again, if you can't figure out the source of the problem, i'd recommend staying with gosms. they update all their apps very frequently and doing great so far. might increase the possibility of getting the error fixed which is causing your problem...

I have a HTC Magic and Handcent and the HTC Messaging App both send notifications at exctly the same time.

Disable notifications in the stock app.

Personally, I am a fan of the stock MMS app and using SMS popup from the market. It's a very small app, and allows the popup similar to Handcent.

go sms pro FTW, it literally pwns everything.

Explain the pwnage factor I haven't tried it as I wasn't all that impressed with the description...sounded like all the others with more visual candy (themes). Why are you sold on it?

I don't like how Go SMS doesn't let you restrict the popup to only come up when the screen is off. Also doesn't have the Gingerbread SMS icon.

I don't use popups, but there's a nice green icon I like. I suppose you could leave the stock icon on and turn off the go icon, then when you get the icon just clear it and launch go? Or use whatever you're using, lol.

Hmm
I have used ChompSMS pretty much the entire time I have owned an android phone and it is way awesome! And super customizable. Way awesome, never have problems with it.

I'm trying out go sms and it seems good so far. I may end up not using the popular because I really like advanced sms toast. It's clean and simple

go into chomp's settings and turn off notifications.
then go into default android sms and turn off notifications.
go back into chomp and turn on notifications.
this should make it so your g1 only notifies via chomp. however, if you still get multiple alerts for a new sms, one of the envelopes will have a greenish border...this is the notification for chompsms. it looks almost exactly like the default icon, but it has the green color around the envelope thingy.
WOOO
Great! Simple! Easy! Awesome App Finally A Way To Text Without Sliding The Qwerty Out...great Work

I left dgalert installed and turned of notification in chompsms, made sure when asked which to use as a default, set chomp as default. Now i get the benefits of chompsms with one notification, just dont get the green envelope.
I kinda wish it wasn't a direct bite of the iPhone Texting module and it was made custom to the G1...its still cool though.
I kinda wish it supported MMS. Except for the better rates on international texting via Chomp, it's fairly useless to me.

Handcent vs Stock Message App

Which do you use? I'm trying to figure out which one to go with. The Handcent or The Stock message app. I've heard of no fix for the awake time when sending a message via stock app. Handcent is pretty cool but to me, it's not needed if the fix has been for stock app.

I use handcent. I like how u can use the bubble effect on mags and change theme to black, candidates change background color, text color, and a ton of other must have settings for a text service. I hate hate hate despise the stock message app
+1 for Handcent. lots of configuration, features. looks slick too.
be sure to configure notifications so you don't get double msgs.
I like Handcent because it pops up a window over whatever you are doing so you can send a quick reply without having to really open the full app up. I don't know that I could go back to stock messaging again.
Handcent. I love the customization, including the font packs. I also like the pop-up, but it sometimes gets a little annoying, so i could see someone not liking it.

Same, I just started using Handcent and its fantastic. I love the pop up notification similar to an iPhone, but you can do a quick reply from it without opening the app. Great features, skins, etc. VERY customizable.
I started using Handcent as an alternative to the stock app because it doesn't pay attention to the carrier timestamps on text messages. My messages were getting screwed up because of Sprint and Verizon. I love the popup box with quick reply. It unlocks the phone and lets you reply, and then relocks right after you send the message.
Thanks all...I downloaded handcent and it's awesome. Lots of features, very nice!!!

Been using SMS Popup for a lil while. Isn't a separate app but lets you quick reply from anywhere, including the lock screen.

I started out using SMS Popup, but compared overall to Handcent, it's really featureless.
thx for handcent recommendation

there's also ChompSMS.. but it's not free :T .. I like Chomps widget :].. it also supports popup with quick reply. Handcent is great though but if for some reason you want to try something else. There's CHOMPSMS
I've used chomp for a while....and after using Handcent for an hour...its way better.
Granted, most of that hour was spent customizing the interface ...but the pop-up quick reply is way better. You have TONS more options for everything in Handcent.
The only thing about Handcent that irritated me was when using quick reply via rhe popup on my lockscreen, the keyboard frequently covered up the reply box. Haven't had that prob with chomp. Both are really good

try reinstalling handcent and make sure the option in handcent allows popups above lockscreen
After using both handcent and chomp, I stuck with handcent. Looked nicer, and I love the popup. Didn't see that option in chomp though. Is it only the paid version?

Sms popups

I've done some research and found out that HTC sense offers this. I want to have a pop-up of my text with a quick reply option on my lockscreen. Is there an apparently that can do it for the captivate? I've tries SMS pop-up and go SMS. Neither works and I hate to continuously install apps. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
Handscent does this very well but it tends to work best as a replacement for the default messaging app.

Ok, so.. I've tried all of those, they all suck. I just found this new one called GO MMS or GO SMS or something. It's awesome, customization options, awesome popup ui, quick, try it out.

What's the best sms app?

I'm literally looking for an sms app that looks like the iphone sms. Which is the best free and paid apps?
Handcent
Sent from my Zio using XDA Premium App
agreed. Handcent is what u'd be after if ur looking for an iphone-ish sms app.
That being said, it still doesnt hold a candle to the responsiveness of the stock sms app, even with the overclock.
I do however love the bells and whistles of handcent (mainly the popup box on incoming sms msgs.).

I totally agree with you Spz0, I've been using Handcent sms now since 2 days after i got my phone, the only other app I had used was GoSms which has alot of the same features as handcent, but I stuck the handcent just the same. I do have some issues sometimes though, like after deleting a message I'll end up receiving it again. I've been trying to figure that one out since day 1. However, I love that app either way.

Ive pretty much resorted to "Go" for everything but launcher. Go SMS, Go contacts, Go dialer. My opinion is that its smooth, functional, and has tons of features ( Easier contact search options for dialing ect )
Tried handcent sms and I didn't like the responsiveness. I just decided to stick with the stock sms app as it is more responsive.
