Hi all i know this is asked before, ive been searching all around and found nothing to help me. I tried the SGS unlock in the market code not found and error. Tried the method in the xda forums with the generate but it does give me the code but says code if found. Tried to extract nv_data but cant find the file. Can anyone help me please.
What firmware are you running right now?
I used SGS before the update. Does this keep the phone unlocked even after changing the firmware?
I know on past phones when unlocked it stayed unlocked. It is the same with the captivated?

I got it easily unlocked when running stock Eclair 2.1, but when flashed with the leaked stock Froyo 2.2 it got network locked again. Luckily I had saved the code, so I just entered it with a diferent SIM and voilá! After that, I've been flashing with Cognition's ROMS and it has remained unlocked.
On a different case : After unlocking a new Captivate (with stock Eclair 2.1), I flashed it with Cog's 2.2 Beta5.5 and it's still unlocked.

Yeah same for me its still unlocked. But my 2nd Captivate i got from ebay doesnt want to be unlocked lol. Im not sure what the previous owner did it so far. Last resort for me right now if i cant get permission to nv_data is to go to a service and get the code from imei, which is fine.

Does anyone know how i can get froyo on my phone with the EPF21B build? Could i change to the ERE27 build WITHOUT rooting my phone? Or flash pauls version through the stock recovery image, without voiding my warranty? Thanks for any help
same problem.
my phone is EPE54B
HELP!!!
Gotta root until Google sort it out I'm afraid.
I have ERE36B with locked bootloader. Can I just update or do I need another update file?
You're on an awkward build... I very much doubt there will be an upgrade path for you.
You will most likely need to flash a mainstream PASSIMG.ZIP (AT&T EPE54B or Vodafone EPF21B) and update from that when Google release one.

Edit: Actually, maybe you should listen to him. After clarification it seems that there were un-original roms out in the wild that didn't need an unlocked bootloader. If you updated to that ROM yourself, even without unlocking then you may not see an upgrade at all.
Old post below for continuity's sake.
--------
Don't listen to him. It seems he is telling you that you will need to unlock to upgrade. If you aren't going to unlock yet, just wait, there will be an OTA update for you too, you just have to wait for Google to send it out.
Google will not force you to unlock your phone.
Is there a way to go back to ere27 so i can update now, without unocking?
Dont mind if i have to do a factory reset or something like that

EPF21B is the official euro shipping ROM.
You can't change it back to ERE27 without unlocking the phone, period.
If you don't want to unlock, you'll have to wait until Google issues the OTA for the official euro phones.

Thanks for that completely incorrect post.
I am not telling you to unlock, both can be flashed in the same way you flashed ERE36B as they are official released images.
As ERE36B is a release that shouldn't be out in the field, I doubt an update will be made for it.
So, since I am not on Vodafone or AT&T, what should I update to? AT&T EPE54B or Vodafone EPF21B?
There has to be a way to restore the phone to factory state and factory ROM?

Sorry about that, it seemed to me that you were telling him he would never get an update without unlocking. But he did mention that he was still locked and had that release. I don't know how he got that one, but if he is truly locked wouldn't it make sense that Google knows of the phones out there with that version?
I still don't think it would make sense for Google to not give those phones an update, and to force them to unlock to upgrade.
Am I missing something important here that's really messing up my understanding?

Except that the factory ROM is different from one to another.
Tmobile factory ROM : ERD79 (which can then be updated to ERE27).
ATT factory ROM : not sure but the one before EPE54B
Europe factory ROM : EPF21B.

I think so.
There are certain ROMs that were leaked, these can be installed without unlocking the bootloader as they are release signed. No phone sent out by Google came with ERE36B, you had to install it yourself. There is also no way back to stock ERE27 without unlocking the bootloader.
My reckoning is that as this particluar ROM isn't meant to be in use by the public an upgrade path is unlikely, hence the advice to flash to a 'legitimate' release image (no unlock necessary) which will definitely be upgradable.

Thanks for explaining. I'll go edit my original post.
Thanks Rusty. What rom should i update to then? Is there another rom i can downgrade from, or is it generally impossible to go to an older rom with locked bootloader?
Can't go older unfortunately, else it would be a no-brainer.
As for which one, I doubt it matters, but I would expect EPE54B to be the next updated.

Doesn't work, cancels installation when it doesn't find the right signature.
yeh, tried that, Wont work with locked bootloader. Tried all ERE27 images, renamed to either passimg.zip or update.zip, and same for all frf50.. Only one thing left to do i guess, and that is wait.
Having the Same Problem,
Hi, I have a Nexus One from Vodafone, and have unlocked it, however, I still can't get it to update to Froyo FRF50 so I can then further upgrade it, I am currently on build EPF21B which I think Vodafone have mucked around with, because I have just updated a Friends Nexus Manually with the same file not problems, mine keeps coming up with, first:
Froyo+E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Then fails on this:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
Can any of you kind people out there confirm that there is something slightly odd about the stock Vodafone ROM,
Thanks for your time in this matter, I assure you that it is deeply appreciated
Kind Regards - Ashe
My unrooted stock Legend currently running 2.05.405.2 still
shows a bootloader of 43.0001. I went from stock 1.31.405.5 to 2.05 via OTA.
This seems weird considering 2.03 has a later version of the bootloader.
Is this the same for all 2.05 users? Is my bootloader corrupted in some way?
Perhaps it means I can root it without downgrade.

How did you get OTA 2.03 if you have 1.31???
Hi,
Sorry, I got my numbers mixed up. I had 1.31.405.5 and got 2.05 ota.
I've edited the original post. Nonetheless, the bootloader still shows 43.0001.
I checked also, same build and still show hboot 43.0001. Weird. Anyway
I don't complain.

Is it possible to root my device without downgrade?
Did you root your phones?
Why don't you thyself just give it a try? Please move this to Legend general...?

Hey I already tried rooting and it gets stuck at
43 main version error with modaco rooting guide.
So I'm assuming i have to downgrade to 1.31.
Oh and I have no clue how to move a thread in xda.
Have you had any joy with downgrading/rooting?
Im in the same exact boat as you myself and I dont seem to be having any luck with the downgrade ;(
No luck with straight rooting. I'm going to downgrade
then root.
If you have any luck with downgrading using the guide on this forum let me know as im having no joy.
Im in the same boat as you, same software and bootloader but the downgrade doesnt seem to play nicely ;(
Few days ago i've downgraded (from 2.05 to 1.31) and rooted my girlfriends phone, no problems at all. Just follow the instructions and you'll make it.

Yep I noticed your reply in the original thread, but i seem to be running into an issue that hasnt been brought up before ;(
Il keep trying!
Hmm. I will try it soon. Also must try the soft root method that
is out on the forum. Since it loses root once rebooted, I was
wondering if clockworkmod could flash a rom, probably not.
Hi guy, i have a galaxy s i9000m (canadian bell version)
I had the phone flashed to 2.2 prior to unlocking it. Im woundering if i flashed back to jh2, will the unlcok still work?
I have successfully unlcocked other i9000m with the unlock tool
why dont try the samsung galaxy s unlock from the market?
I unlocked mined with that.
I have a similar problem: I updated to 2.2 and the marketplace app doesnt work for me. Where can i get the stock bell rom and will it even work if i go back to the old rom to get my unlock codes?
I just tried going back to stock as well as restoring a backup i had made of the stock rom, no luck still gives me errors.
DO THE UNLOCK BEFORE YOU UPDATE TO 2.2
I recently bought a used captivate . The seller has advertised it as 2.1 .This will be my first android device and i have no idea what things should i do 1st .
i have the following questions:
1. if i get a device with Stock OS 2.1 ,should i directly update it to 2.2 with Kies Mini or first unlock it before upgrading to 2.2 .
Does the unlock process becomes difficult after an official 2.2 OR
The upgrade process becomes difficult after unlocking
2.since official 2.2 has been released there is no point in reading custom ROM threads .DO custom roms offer any advantage over the official 2.2?
3.Is tethering working on 2.2 ..i guess it was disabled on the lastest 2.1 update
4.HOW do i check if i got a phone with stock 2.1 and if it hasnt been flashed with custom roms and reverted back .This will be useful in troubleshooting if i get into any problems
personally a custom rom would be a better idea than stock 2.2, most custom ROMs are on 2.2.1. All preference though... I never personally liked the iphone-esque launcher of Samsung, so I tend to stay away from custom ROMs. Why would you go from a 2.2.1 version to a 2.2 filled with AT&T's bloatware.
Check phone info in settings to see what version it's on
And when you update to a new version it generally needs to be re-rooted especially if it's official.
In the Dev section you can find an Odin one-click to stock ROM
If you're on 2.1 you want to get your real official unlock code before you upgrade (once you upgrade you can't get this unlock code). Write the code down, just in case somehow the phone relocks (mine never has).
start reading. i cant STRESS that enough!!!!!
i read for 3 days before i flashed anything custom.
KNOW what you are doing so when you do mess up (we all do) you can properly explain what you screwed up...
start here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I897
then check out the stickies in each section of the captivate forum.

While it is easier to get the unlock code if the phone has never been flashed, it is far from impossible after.

not true. i unlocked on 2.2 last month. you just need a new version of your unlock program. or a different unlock program.
2.2 isnt new. ATT isnt the rest of the world. ATT was late. time for you ATT people to catch up to the rest of the world.
thanks for all the replies
There was a thread which said there are no workarounds for 2.2
how do i check if the seller has upgraded to 2.2 and then reverted back to stock 2.1 before selling me ? This will effect the unlocking process as there are many methods posted
What the official unlock code (is it through SGS Unlocker?)
Is the unlock code stored on phone or on SD card . i am not be getting the original SD card
Hi guys. Im really having a problem with my phone now. I can't update my phone or do a hard reset as I will be directly brought to the fastboot menu with a security warning on the top. When i go back to the hboot menu and try to do recovery or factory reset, the same thing happens.
I really want to know what is going on and how do I solve this problem..

Try the Clockworkmod first. If it is bootable, flash a rom and install 4EXTrecovery via 4EXT Updater.
