[Q] how can i write /sdcard/update.zip in recovery mode - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to update the status bar on my i9000m/JH2. I must have done something wrong when zipping, signing, or zipaligning the file. I was able to apply the update.zip without any errors through recovery mode. But when i rebooted, I was met with continuous force close windows. I had my original backed up and wanted to place that into /sdcard and then simply run it from recovery mode to 'undo' the damage i did.
/sdcard appears empty when I run abd to my phone while in recovery mode. If i attempt to push a file to it, i get 'permission denied'. Do i need to manually mount /sdcard in recovery mode to be able to overwrite /sdcard/update.zip (can this be done)?

On sec...

nudge nudge

Reflash is only option now. Recommend in future you leave recovery update.zip on SD card and use root explorer to copy over new f/w. That way if no good you can recover easier.

If u get adb running why not just push it then ?
adb shell stop
adb push framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
adb shell start

I ended up reflashing shortly after it happened. I'll look into root explorers.

/system should still be already mounted. Otherwise u wudnt see a homescreen.
Just try the commands.

One other detail is that the phone wasn't rooted At the time I thought that might have been preventing me from seein /system.
This is all educational for me, I was wondering what other options I had before reflashing. Thanks for all the input guys. I ended reflashing with Odin a few days ago.

can i...?

push a ROM onto my sdcard through adb?
my win xp is so old it wont read the root of my sdcard unless its only fat32...
so i was wondering if i could do it that way...
ive looked through threads but hadnt found a definite answer seeing as im new to all this
any help would be appreciated!
I am not sure you are understanding the process or I am not understanding the question.
But lets just roll with it...
You can do:
adb push c:\romNam.zip /sdcard
Click to collapse
This will put the romName.zip file on the root of your sdcard (fat32 partition). From there you can reboot into recovery mode (turn off phone, then hold down the HOME button and then hit the POWER button). If you have the CM 1.4 recovery image installed then you can install any zip file and you would just point to the romName.zip file. If you have the CM 1.3 recovery image you should rename the romName.zip file to update.zip and then apply that update from the menu in CM 1.3.
If you do not have the CM recovery image installed, well, then you need to back and read some more.
i think you are on the right track for what im asking...
im using cm 1.4 recovery
lets say i dl drizzys 1.5.5
do i rename it update?update.zip?or leave it as is the way i downloaded it?
i tried putting it on my c drive and naming it update and it didnt work
or course i was using someone elses thread to go by so maybe i did it wrong
Do you have adb set up so it can connect to your phone?
If you have CM recovery 1.4 you do not have to rename it to update.zip but go ahead and do that for this test.
When you say
i tried putting it on my c drive and naming it update and it didnt work
Click to collapse
what do you mean?
The renaming didn't work, or the adb push didn't work
renaming it update and trying to push it through adb didnt work...
im downloading another ROM and im gonna try again and see if it might work this time...
Right. But what I am asking is, what "didnt work." Was the file not there on the sdcard after you pushed? Did the CM recovery image fail to apply the update?
the file wasnt on the sd and cm didnt see it to install...
i may have named it wrong...or missed the space between zip and /
i will try again and see if thats what was wrong...
Okay.
When you set up adb did you follow this thread?
If you are not able to mount your sdcard in windows that may or may not be a showstopper. How do you have your sdcard formatted? All fat32 or did you split it up into fat32, ext3, linux-swap?
If you are going to adb push files to your sdcard you should NOT mount the sdcard.
yes...i followed that thread
and i repartitioned my 4gb sdcard as such:
fat32 0 1405
ext3 1405 1905
linux-swap 1905 2001
and i did not mount my phone...i at least saw not to do that in very bold letters so i took it to heart...lol!
Okay, cool.
What does the CM 1.4 tell you when you try to apply the update.zip?
After you adb push the file, go into the device via adb shell.
CD to the /sdcard and do an "ls" and tell me what you see.
If you do not see anything but the adb push returned no errors, your sdcard may be fubar (don't freak yet, there are fixes for it and we will get there if we need to).
If you do see the zip file then reboot into recovery again. But this time do not try to apply an update, instead drop to a console and CD into the /sdcard again and do another "ls" and let me know what you see.
i just tried doing this:
cd c:\android-sdk-windows-1.6_r1\tools>adb shell
/ # adb push c:\KiNgxKxROM_Beta1_RedRosieThemev1_signed.zip /sdcard
/sbin/sh: adb: not found
then i tried:
/ # adb push c:\KiNgxKxROM_Beta1_RedRosieThemev1_signed /sdcard
/sbin/sh: adb: not found
then:
/ # adb push c:\update /sdcard
/sbin/sh: adb: not found
nothing
and where do i look in the forums...or how exactly do i cd to the sdcard?
aha!
I see the issue.
You do not need to adb shell then do adb push
it shoul be like:
C:c:\android-sdk-windows-1.6_r1\tools> adb push c:\KiNgxKxROM_Beta1_RedRosieThemev1_signed.zip /sdcard
Click to collapse
adb push is done from your local dos window not from within the adb shell.
Try that out and let me know.
wow!
that did it! thank you sooooo much!
thats just one more step i can eliminate now!
no Problem. Welcome to the world of roms.
care to walk me through how to use switchrom? lol!
all these hero builds seem to crash on me after awhile and i kinda wanna have several to switch to if/when they fail...

[Q] adb remount

Hi guys,
sorry if my english isnt so good...
i'm in trouble with ADB..
i want to upgrade my swype keyboard on my NEW M1 rom eu....i got the 1.58 and i want to try the 1.60..
i found a thread on this forum with commands for upgrading the swype like this way:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
su
pm list packages -f | grep swype
rm /system/app/<restOfApkPathFoundInAboveCommand>
pm uninstall <value after apk= found in result of 2 commands above>
exit
Install normally. If you want the apk in the rom:
adb push <newSwype.apk> /system/app/<newSwype.apk>
adb remount
adb shell
pm install <newSwype.apk>
(found here-> LINK)
I'm stuck at the beginning:
Code:
C:\android\tools>adb devices
List of devices attached
9000ec2a228b device
C:\android\tools>adb remount
remount failed: No such file or directory
my phone is rooted and in debug usb mode..I dont understand how can I go ahead...
what can I do?
thanks

are u using the NEW M1 rom too?
Rooting doesn't automatically give you remount permissions AFAIK.
i just use this command
Code:
adb push test.txt /sdcard/test.txt
and the copy is ok....i found the file in the sgs sdcard...
The command adb remount is for the /system directory (for set write permission) .... i think it cant find the directory /system on the phone......why?!?!

Are you using the internal ext2 lagfix? I think that causes problems with the adb remount command. It doesn't work for me either.
Same results using a different ROM?

adb remount as well
Trying to remap hard keys, adb remount along with push and pull do not work. Depending on whether im in shell or not I get no such file or directory or file not found errors. I can change into directory of each of the folders im trying to work with, and look at the file but I can't push it from my tools folder(locally) or pull it from the system folder. Every tutorial I see has adb remount command first, which fails every time.
Samsung Fascinate
Blackhole-build your own rom
(also tried on jt's latest rom, same issue
Crazy
I'm having the same issue here too. I'm trying to get a custom boot screen on my rooted Samsung Infuse and I've tried every way I can think of and it wont take. Clockworkmod says successfully installed, but its not. Soon as I reboot I see the At&T stock boot. I've fixed all of my permissions and still no luck.
So I saw a solution to do it via adb by typing "adb remount" and I get the same thing u guys are getting. I've got a headache now. Done all I could, even typing "shell", "su", that all goes well then when I tried to push it "adb push bootanimation.zip system/media" I get adb: not found. Smh, is it a device issue?
i think ive got the solution
flash a new kernel..................................worked for me................

[How To] Recover from a soft brick

A soft brick, in this case, is when you make a bad edit to your framework files and the phone won't fully boot and starts flashing a red LED at you.
There is one catch, you only get about 1-2min to do all of this before the phone reboots on its own. If that happens, do SuperOneClick steps again and continue where you left off. Better yet, build a script to do it all for you
Power off your device
Enter Fastboot:
Hold Volume down + power until you see Fastboot at the top left
Use volume down to scroll down to "Early USB Enumeration" (only shows one item at a time, if you pass it, keep going down, up selects)
Press Volume up to select
Wait for ADB to enable, run "Shell Root" from SuperOneClick, wait until it says you have root.
Enter adb shell from command line, You should have root(#) access:
adb shell
Mount the system directory as read/write:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
Make a new directory on /data for your recovery files: (sdcard wont be mounted yet)
mkdir /data/recover
Exit adb shell:
exit
Push your known working files to the new directory:
adb push /path/to/local/file.ext /data/recovery
Enter adb shell from command line:
adb shell
Copy your newly pushed recovery files to their proper location:
cp /data/recover/services.jar /system/framework
cp /data/recover/framework.jar /system/framework
cp /data/recover/famework-res.apk /system/framework
Reboot:
reboot now
Thanks! Extremely happy you are deving for this phone
What's the best way to backup my stock partitions before I keep playing with those files?
Titan Backup works for that?
Or just a tar cf /mnt/sdcard/systembackup.tar /system , works?
Thanks in advance.

I would just use the tar solution, much easier to deal with.
You can also use ADB, adb pull /system system
Also, the retail dump I did matched my phone dump bit for bit, as long as you have that you should be fine.
Thanks! I am messing around with the APKs and scripts to get the webtop to work without the dock. So I wanted to make sure I was covered.

One last question.
Once I deodex my /system/app, should I just do a adb push app /system/app and then rm /system/app/*.odex ?
I am used to use the update.zip trick on the captivate. But I am not sure how to proceed on this phone.

Unrelated to this, I could sware yesterday I got to the recovery screen where I was able to wipe stuff and also be able to use update.zip. Although I did not use and update files but saw the option there. Today I am looking everywhere but the recovery screen does not come up with the options. I only see exclamation point and the droid. May be I am going nuts but can anyone confirm this.

ahha, thank you. Now I know I am going crazy. I used it yesterday to wipe when the system was unstable on me after playing around with the framework. I am must have stumble on that by accident. I am wondering if this documented yet somewhere around here.
Also too bad we cannot get root from there yet.
Well thank you for this. So when it boots to run, does it do a sys check to verify files are the same size or what? Anyway went to my local AT&T store and they swapped it out for me.

Crazy....mine just would not reboot. But good to know that there is a way to recover. Love the phone but hate Motorola. Wish that it was easy as the Cappy.
Cool stuff. I may snatch the framework off the phone in stock form and make a batch package for this so folks can easily just double click to restore their framework and system app folder.
Good work DG...
I never get past that initial... Starting RSD protocol support screen. Is that fast boot? If so I'm a retard...
EDIT: I need the face palm sticky. It's not Volume UP...it's Volume Down. Reading comprehension for the loss...

I have done this several times now, it works
I soft bricked my Atrix earlier this morning, and used this to recover. The time limit is a serious pain!
I ended up needing to separate /system into 5 separate pushes of 30MB each in order to get them done in time.
Oddly, after restoring everything, the phone is no longer associated with my motoblur account, and I can't add it.
Also, I think there my be some files in /system that are unaccounted for by the filesystem, as there is 70MB more than what is present.
Edit:
Restoring the system fixed both above problems.

[Q] adb can't seem to get SU permission when in clockwork

can someone please help. im pulling my hair out lol
im trying to fix a friends phone GT-I9000.
basically i get error in mounting sdcard.
after searching endlessly and installing 100s of stock rom. still no luck.
i have come across this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253036
im hoping i can reset my partition on the sdcard.
but i can't get su permission on android sdk adb shell command
phone is in clockwork recovery mod when running the adb commands
i.e. this is the code i have to do..
adb shell
mount /sdcard
su
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
rm 1
rm 2
rm 3
quit

mount /sdcard
mount: permission denied (are you root?)

the su command it not recongised.... any ideas?
the phone will not boot into any rom. only option is recovery or download mode.
i have rooted it with CF-ROOT, which in turn installs CWM
HELP please!!!!!!!!
Hi , have you tried flashing a stock rom(with 3 files....csc , pda and phone) and also the odin pit512 file....repartition box checked also. screen shots and some download links in : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23213912&postcount=6
Yep. Tried lots of stock rom. Pits file. Repartition etc.
Looks like only option left is that command. If that doesn't work the SD card hardware must be bad.
Don't understand why I can't get su. I can't get rom to install. Therefore no debug mod
IIRC, I had same kind of problems long time ago..can't really remember what I did to fix it, but there is this "remount" command what needed to run before trying to run some shell commands. So try "adb remount". It's probably just for setting r/w permissions, but it's worth of trying
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
ok gonna try that.
i did find a thread that said using this parted script but you have to put it across to the sd card. can't do that because its not reading the sd... lol
stuff ive done to date.
tried installing any stock rom. from 2.3.6 to 2.1 all diffferent type like JPY etc.
tried various settings on odin , i.e. re-partition, pit files, bootloaders etc..
ive rooted with ct-root to get clockwork recovery install.
its bascially not doing any of the installation on restart from a flash from odin.
i guess that means the flash rom won't setup/install lol
im at a bit of a lost end...
any way of clearing and remaking the partitions via odin??
remount
failed unknown error 0
this is getting annoying any ideas?
su not found
for the sake of answering my own question
by the looks of it my internal memory is dead. therefore returned under warrenty
i could install a rom by inserting an external sd card. but it was a bit annoying because it couldn't save photos etc.

Removing System Apps

I'm rooted and am trying to mount the system to remove bloatware apps... However everytime Titanium Backup removes it and I reboot it's still there...
Anyone have any ideas?
System is protected: you can't modify it while the phone is booted. You'll have to make a zip or whatever to delete it in recovery.
You have to be kidding me...
I've spent all day long trying to root this bastard phone and that didn't work then I managed it and now I can't disable, remove any apps ?
So much for HTC being dev friendly

The recovery flashed but wouldnt boot , managed to get round it when i discovered POB with his superboot Thank god for the desire C
Then i realised that i couldnt flash anything because I manged to install 6.0.2.8 as a boot img, and 6.0.3.0 as a proper recovery.
Then i didnt have any files on the device to flash boohoo so i managed to get ADB sideload working through the AIO One Toolkit... And managed to flash AHRD finally getting a working device,
As you see Im a seasoned vet at these things but the HTC One has been the first device that has stumped me....
----------------------
The apps issue is not unkwown for HTC however they havent done this for a while.... Back with the G2 they did exactly the same thing and yes ive frozen them but there should be away to remove system apps for us through root.... But i cant remember how, Throwing it into ADB Shell and requesting SU along with a Remount works fine but still would like to remove the apps.
Im also looking for someone with a locked phone... (Sim Locked) i have a theory and it worked on the Desire C Anyone wanna help?

Delete the apps with titanium and power off the phone. Don't do a restart.
Already tried that ^_^
You need to flash a custom kernel with a modified ramdisk to disable system protection Without doing that you're like deleting an app on windows with deepfreeze on it
Is that the only solution?
There are so many bloated useless and intrusive (cr)apps on this phone it's unbelievable.
Other solution is boot in recovery and delete it there. Either thru adb while in recovery mode, flashable zip or through file manager(if you're using TWRP). Other than that nope

make a backup first in case you mess up something
Code:

The best way to remove apps in recovery is through adb:
Code:

the simple way is ROM CLEANER, but isn't available yet for the One.

I dont have a One, and dont plan on having one (ever, thanks to this thread! I think I'll stick to Sony, they have instructions to unlocking bootloader on their official website)
BUT, if the system is locked, it should be locked trough ADB too, so I guess what I'd try is install busybox, custom recovery, go into recovery, connected it to the PC (or a mac, but since we're on no-apple forum, I'll assume PC), mounting system there and doing your thing.
You can install busybox and custom recovery right?
Edit: never mind, I should really learn to read. Sometimes I think I'm dyslexic a little, just for words, not letters.
I did not see the 'recovery' part mentioned.
Anywho, mounting system is what you forgot, so at least I said something helpful
