Hi, can someone explain to me how Sprint knows what phone I am using? Is it with a hardware identification number? Is there a way to spoof this number, so that Sprint will think I'm using a phone that's not a smartphone?
PLEASE - can anyone provide me with some information? I think this is doable - I just don't know much about it. Thanks

basically when you activate your phone you give them a serial # this is hard coded into every sprint phone, their probably might be a way to do it but i can tell you for sure its highly illegal to do what your trying to do
Thanks for the info - I'm just curious in general as to how Sprint knows what phone we use. I've been looking at the setprop values on my phone, thinking that one of those properties are the ones set by Sprint to determine what phone I'm using. What do you guys think?

nope nothing on the phone can change what ESN sprint activates that ESN is what determines your model

very very true, extremely illegal, and they WILL report you if they find out.
that being said, it CAN be done. no i will not tell you how. if you want to go to jail search the web for esn changing. i am not going to offer any advice on finding it. BUT it is out there, it has been done.

I did some reading on ESN changing, and it doesn't seem like something I want to do - it doesn't even seem to do what I want to do.
Changing my ESN to Bob's ESN (for example), would make my calls/texts be deducted from his plan rather than mine - correct?
All I want to do is report my phone as being a dumb phone rather than a smartphone to Sprint - is ESN changing the only way to do this?

Is there a way to tell if a phone has been added to some sort of blacklist that Sprint will not activate? I was given a Touch Pro 2 and am thinking about using it instead of the Hero for a while but I am afraid that I might not be able to have it activated.

Why would you want to use a tp2 over the hero?
google cdma workshop
You just try to activate it. If they say no then that is it. They aren't going to send the police after you or anything.
Oh and if you can't activate it then what thedudejdog said... can't say much more then that.
Call sprint cs and tell them you want to check the status of the esn number on a pre-owned phone before you buy it, they will most likely be happy to check the status for you.
*edit- you need to know the esn number for the phone before you call

Good advice here - one thing, your phone may have either an ESN or an MEID, one or the other should work equally well as suggested here.
I bought a HTC Hero from someone on Craigslist, who ripped me off! Her acct is suspended and I can't activate the phone. How can I reset the rom to clear it?
I am so mad!!!
anyone?
please?
did you tell sprint what happened?
yes
they said there was nothing they could do
you cant...that would require changing the ESN and thats majorly illegal. Best bet is just sell the one for someone for cricket and then get another one.

Is there a way (other than calling Sprint) to tell if the imei associated with a phone is stolen or otherwise unable to be activated? I am purchasing a new phone because I have broken my hero and I found a replacement on craigslist but worried about trying to activate it. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Lol, thanks And that's because I don't think Sprint would want anyone being able to lookup whether or not a phone is blah blah blah
Well.. first of all I've looked around and under the circumstances haven't found anything of my interest..
First of all. I'm not sure if its illegal or not... Its is under certain circumstances and some places it says otherwise. Well I haven't found anything that says it is....
Also. My vivid is not imei locked or blacklisted or anything. It works. But I have sprint and am thinking of using it as a Go Phone. Well. I was thinking of buying a cheap go phone and use that imei to have cheaper internet.
It shouldn't. Be illegal. I'm using an imei I own. And att is too expensive.. but I really like the phone.
How can this be done?
Not looking to get banned over this. Been here a while. Don't give me trouble. I just want some info.
Thanks.

It Can't be done with Verzion or Sprint because they are both CDMA and Not GSM. You could do T-Mobile, AT&T and Maybe Simple Mobile not 100% certain but to do any of those I believe you need to get an Unlock code for the phone for it to function.
no, what I meant for sprint is that it is my primary service. thats it..
Id like to activate this one seperately using Go Phone pay as you go. its just that internet there is pathetic and expensive. $25 fo 500MB... but if its not a smartphone... hence why I want to change IMEI, too fool network thinking its a nokia dunbphone. its only $10 for unlimited. I think here we have a $50 for everything unlimited, for dumbphones.
really know its possible, but want some info. I could keep tethering from my sprint phone but, honestly ATT is way faster here. even if I stay on regular 3G.
with an unlock code I can change the IMEI number?
Oh I see what you mean. As far as I know there is no way to change an IMEI on a phone. And if that is correct it would mean your plan would eventually change because they can see the IMEI although I am not 100% on that because it would be a go phone plan as opposed to an actual standard plan.
Thread closed. Discussion of imei changing is prohibited. As it is illegal in most places. Thanks.

quick question- is it possible if I root my old OG Droid that my friend who lost her EVO could then call sprint and do an ESN change and use that on Sprints network? Or is there some unlock code I need from Verizon to unlock the phone so Sprint could activate it? Or is this even possible lol?
Thanks

Possible? Yes, it is technically possible. Finding a Sprint CSR to do this for you (and likely lose their job as a result) is another thing though . My best advice would be to insist that it is a Sprint branded device, even though I'm sure they'll tell you the ESN lookup brings back a Moto Droid. I will say that it is extremely unlikely you will get this cleared for use on Sprint.
Best thing to do is give it a shot. The worst they can tell you is no. And if for some reason they do say yes, you'll need to obtain the manual programming information from Sprint. Dialing ##7764726 under the phone app and inputting password 000000 should bring you to the appropriate menus to input that information.
Providing you actually found a "good CSR" who lets you do this, be extremely patient and courteous to them and don't dare pushing them to waive the activation fee...
cool thank you!
