[Q] Download- and Recovery mode only works sometimes? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know there has been other threads similar to this one, but all of them had already flashed firmwares multiple times. And my phone is straight out the box, only rooted and used Voodoo Lagfix (which I uninstalled)
I've managed to get into recovery mode and download mode a couple of times, but it's really tedious every time I try to do it. Mostly my boot-up just loops over and over again.
I just don't know what's wrong? I've tried holding down the buttons simultaneously, one by one, holding till bootscreen appears then release, holding down until bootscreen appears then just release power. Tried waiting for the second bootscreen appears, then release. But none of it seems to work.
I know I can use ADB but I'd rather use the 3-button combo..
There is also the 3-button combo fix, but I don't think I should use it.. Since I've already managed to get into both recovery and download mode.
Please tell me what works for you 100% of the times.
-EDIT-
Searched the forums even more, and I managed to get into download mode using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7563312&postcount=3
Still dunno why it seems so easy for some people, and nigh impossible for me?
(info: Baseband version: I9000XXJM1, Buildno: ECLAIR.XWJM2 Kernel version 2.6.29 [email protected] #2)

Same for me. But, I just discoverd that if I let the phone charging for 30 minutes, it get a little bit warm and then the three buttons modes are rised systematically. Hope, it will be the same for you...

[Q] Bricked after upgrade attempt

Hi!
I was trying to upgrade my Galaxy Captivate following the instructions on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783403
First I tried the KIES option, but ended in the phone stuck on a black screen after 2 minutes of the S logo on it.
So, I then tried with ODIN using both package, first with the original, but ended getting an error "E:Can't mount /dev/block/stL10 (Invaild argument)"
And then with Richthofen's integrated package which seems like fixed that issue. indeed did it, but not fixed the original issue, after this one I ended in the same stage than with the KIES upgrade.
I can enter on recovery mode and move using the volume up and down button, however, the "power" button to select any of the option do nothing.
I tried to connect with adb and indeed see it (when is on recovery mode)
adb devices
List of devices attached
10004cb6cc04 recovery
But can't do anything on the phone, not even reboot it with adb, the process get's stuck and the phone is not rebooted.
Anyone have any idea of what I can do now? send it to Samsung is not an option since I bought this phone in USA and I live in Argentina, this phone is not available in the country yet.
Thanks in advance.
Thread moved to Captivate Q&A.
You used a rom with a kernel for Samsung Galaxy I-9000, I went through this also. The I-9000 has a "hard" home key and the kernel is telling your phone that it does also. Are you sensors acting backwards; up/down = left/right?; if so you need to flash back to stock with Odin 3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I was able to get into download mode by using the vol key like it says but I repeatedly tapped "menu" and "Home" when the little triangle kept popping up (I mean really fast tapping) and it worked. It's really hard to brick these, thought I did more than once myself.
Follow the instructions, it works great. I've had too use it more than once.
Lesson here, don't use any package that's based on a kernel for different hardware; especially the I-9000; unless specifically stated that it has been modified specifically for your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 saved my life! I was so angry with me for being such an idiot!. I lost all the contents on the phone, but at least got my phone working again.
By the way, to put it in download mode what I did was, remove the battery, put it back, press volume up + down and plug the phone to USB.
Thanks a lot Tazman171
No problem, just passing on info that was passed to me by helpful people at this sight. And yep, the way you did it was right, I was thinking of the recovery menu and selecting reinstall packages option, I actually was able to do it with the way I described above.

Hey right now my phone is "bricked" because of a botched JPC Froyo ROM install and I have no way of getting it into download mode. None of the methods on the "One-Click Stock ROM" work, and a few other ones suggested don't either. I'm curious as to how you did it with tapping menu and home, etc. Would you mind posting up some instructions?
Sorry about the late reply, it was recovery mode that I got into, not download mode. You might have one of the phones that won't support the 3/2 button methods of getting to the download/recovery menus. It worked for me because my phone does support that method, it was just the I-9000 had switched my buttons around.

[Q] Screen Blacks Out After Start Up Screen

I'll preface this thread by saying that I've look all over to help me remedy my problem, but I have not found anything that has resolved my issue. I've tried all the combinations of the the manual buttons to bootloader mode and download mode, and it will not work as my firmware is not the current Bell hardware burron fix (I have the old JH2 firmware, w/o the updated SPL)
What prompted this is that I was trying to reinstall the default android clock app that I deleted on accident. I had downloaded some default apps that were pulled from the Samsung Epic 4G (can't post URLs properly due to my user limitations, thread here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773142) thinking that the apks in there are the same. I tried installing but that failed. That should have been a red flag, but I wanted to have the clock app back. So what I did next is what I regret. I copied and pasted the AlarmClock.apk and AlarmClock.odex to the systems\app folder using Root Explorer. It wasn't until I rebooted my phone that this problem occurred.
I know that my phone isn't completely bricked as I can still see the battery icon when I plug it in to charge...and the phone does load the start up screen, but it won't get past that and will black out and the capacitive LED buttons (menu and back) will stay lit.
I've been diligent in backing up my information on my home computer (I'm at work now), so data loss is no problem for me. What I would really want is to fix this. My last resort is to return tot the store and get an exchange, which I really don't want to do.
Help is greatly appreciated.
you cannot install/copy (which have .odex file) apps from other firmware versions becuase the .odex is encrypted for a particular version.. if you pasted to system/app and it is a critical app from wrong version you will hang/freeze phone.. try to get into download mode and reflash the firmware..
Do you have access to the phone over adb?
Adb reboot download?

I've read about the ADB Reboot Recovery, but it mentions that my phone has to be on USB debugging mode to work, which I believe is not on =/
Is there a link where I can download to try anyways? I've searched fro it, but I'm not sure if what i searched is the right thing.
I cannot get the download mode to work as the combinations I've been using do not even register...the phone just keeps looping the Samsung Galaxy i9000M screen when I hold the buttons...like it's in perpetual reboot mode. Like I stated earlier, the hardware buttons do not seem to work. I have the old JH2 firmware that was updated from Keis that does not have the hardware button fix.

this should work if you take battery out hold down all three buttons and when you first see logo release power button for 1 sec. then repress.
also try it with and without usb plugged in.
For adb u need the android software development kit (sdk). Its available at developers.android.com. Simply run sdksetup and choose sdk tools.

I gave adb (great tool btw) a try, got it to run in command prompt, but I get an error saying device not found. Unfortunately, I did not have USB debugging mode on prior to my phone's screen blacking out on me. I should mention that I have a Bell Mobility Galaxy S I9000M, and hardware button attempts for any mode (volume up and/or down + home + power on, in a multitude of combinations, e.g. USB connected/disconnected) , be it recovery or download, have been futile as that method is not in the firmware I have one my phone. I'll have to use my last resort and get an exchange for the phone at the store I got it from. With any luck, hopefully someone who works there will have the magic touch and revive my phone. *crosses fingers*
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I'll keep them in mind to not let this happen again. Thank goodness for my constant backups instilled in me during my Windows Mobile days.
When the phone is ON firmly press volume up + home + power. It will reboot. Keep holding them! Wait a half a second after the gti9000 logo appears then let go of the power button. Keep holding volume up and home! This should boot you into recovery. Try it a few times. I found it is all in the timing of letting go of the power button.
Hope this helps!

Also, I had an i9000 in your state and even after I had it previously working with Android SDK and the Samsung USB driver (essential in Windows but not included the SDK) but after I messed up the ROM (trying to lagfix it) it stopped responding to adb commands on either OSX or Windows. Boot recovery from the aforementioned hotkey combination seemed to be the only way to fix it. But I am a n00b. I'm only passing on what I experienced.
Cheers,
Aaron

Had a similar problem after flashing a new rom, managed to egt past it by reflashing using Odin.
One of my friends has just given me his i9000 in the same state to see if I can fix it, he has been quoted $300NZ to repair!
He says he did it trying to flash a rom after successful root.
I get the galaxy splash screen but no matter how i hold and release the aforementioned keys I just dont get anything all.
ADB returns no device found and not seen by ODIN.
Tried many battery pulls, reboot + three keys and releasing/releasing-reapplying power button at various times during the splash screen. And with/without USB connected.
Pretty sure the device did have USB debugging enabled before this.
I am watching this thread closely, if I fix it I get a box of beer!

[Q] I9000M Can't boot!

Hi, I know the questions have been asked many times, but I did not see any good answers.
I have an I9000M an d I tried upgrading to froyo 2.2. I first tried with Kies, but it wouldn't. It would see my phone, I could add music, add/save contact, but when I upgraded it would just disconnect.
I turned to Odin's method. I had the seemingly frequent problem of it being stuck at "File Analysis" It had been there for an hour or so... So I got it was not working. I then had the bad idea of unplugging it, and now I'm stuck at the screen on boot with a [phone]---[exclamation mark]---[pc].
I can't get into either recovery or download mode anymore (tried with 3 buttons, but wasnt able anyways before, and ADB don't see my device (nor does Odin or Kies).
I tried removing the battery for about a minute and rebooting/replugging, etc. Nothing works.
What can I do more...?
Thanks

Without download mode (VOL Down, Home, Pwr) then your only options is to either send it in for repair or try to get download mode working with a homemade Jig.
More on that Here.
I heard story's of people of forcing it to go into download mode using heat as well from say a hair dryer. But I do not recommend that.

Also I'm just curious as how you used odin without even having download mode? I'm having my doubts that when you said I know this question has been asked many times but you have not found a good answer is true. Next time do a bit more reading before just flashing your device. If you have even 1 thing your not sure about when flashing your phone that's 1 to many.
Puzzled also .
First question has to be can you actually get the phone into download mode .
Thats the big yellow download sign .
That has to be your first step get download mode on your phone .
Odin does not work without download mode so if no download mode who knows what you where trying to achieve or did achieve .
jje
No, I could get it in download mode BEFORE attempting to flash. Then I started Odin.
Now, I'm stuck with the image on boot screen and I can't do a thing. Phone is not recognized anymore on my PC so ADB/KIES/Odin won't see it.

Remove Kies and reinstall that will make sure the drivers are OK .
Get into download mode if 3 buttons fail then you need the jig as posted.
Could try removing battery go to three button download mode and as you are holding down the buttons stick the battery back in to see if it enters download mode .
jje
Thanks guys for all the tips...! But nothing seems to work. It's just stuck at the connect error icon (?) and when I try to go in download mode either way, it just loops. (Icon appears and dissappears)
Two more questions:
1) If i have to get it repaired, do I contact Samsung or my provider ? (Bell in this case)
2) I'm at ease with electronics and stuff, so the jig should't be too hard to do for me, but is it guaranteed to work ? I mean, is it software-independant. Is there a problem that I can have that would prevent it to work ?
Thanks again!
Will work. Had the same issue as yours were I could not get into download mode and the phone would not boot either. The jig saved my phone. You can make your own or you can buy it on ebay. Good luck.
Good, should have all that at my job. Will try it.
Finally, it turns out that I called Bell and they told me that this was a common problem with these devices and they are sending me a new one!
Well.. whatever it was! haha
Thanks again for the help though!

[Q] Loaded I9000 2.3.3 lost 3 button combo

Before I begin I know I'll be slammed for loading an incompatible ROM for my phone, dumb on my part, especially without a clockwork backup.
I was running a leaked 2.2 rooted, which when loaded removed clockwork so i could no longer take backups. I then followed pathikshah.com/blog/install-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-on-samsung-galaxy-s/ which I know says don't use for captivate, but I didn't read that.
I am now running 2.3.3 but my back button is not operational, it flashes when pressed as normal but completes no action. My home button however acts as my back button. My menu and search buttons are normal.
I do not have the 3 button combo capability as i once had before, the screen just stays black and the buttons light up and it stays like that till i battery pull.
Other than that and some crazy screen distortion of colors when it boots it runs fine from what I can tell. But I'd like to at some point get back to a stable/compatible ROM.
Please let me know how I can somehow get to stock or a stable ROM. Thanks in advance.

You only option may be to buy or make a jig to force download mode then you can flash the stock ROM using Odin.
erm, im not 100 % sure because i havent tried this yet... but if i read it correctly, your rom is still (somewhat) operational. So try installing rom manager, flash cwm, then reboot into recovery.
From that, you can install the 3 button fix. Then i would suggest going into download mode, flash back to stock 2.2 using the odin back to stock. Then you can begin the process of installing 2.3.3
Also, the problem with yours is, you installed the i9000 version which for some reason has that button mapping problem. There are 2 versions of 2.3.3 on this forum (Cyanogen Mod 7 and MIUI). You can use either one of those, the buttons work perfectly and i dont see anything wrong with it.
Oh and, as the above person said, if my method doesnt work, you can either buy a jig, or build one yourself. There are threads in this forum about both . Also, please refrain from using I9000 stuff unless you fully know what it does. Im not much of a modder myself which is why i only download stuff from the captivate dev section.
Hope i helped
P.S... youd only be slammed if you didnt know what your problem was and blamed someone else for it. This forum is to help people
Try volume up and power, or volume down and power
Miui
This video helped me to go to downloading mode on my i9000 that had its 3 buttons bug:
youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8&feature=feedlik
you need to buy a 301k or 300k resistor and it will work for 100%
adb reboot download!
also see if odin sees the phone when the screen is black, if you say buttons light up the phone is on, could be a problem with the image used in download mode. i once had this happen after a bad crash on the old manhatten project kernel. the splash screen images got corupted and it wouldn't boot passed a messed up lookin splash screen. thought i fried the video chip and went to flash back to stock. the screen stayed black with the 2 button + usb cable combo but odin showed the yellow box. so i started flashing and halfwat through the little guy with the shovel poped up. i was in download mode but my screen was black do to corrupted splash screens. phone took a flash and went back to normal.
success
Thank you all for your help. I ended up building a jig out of 3 100k and a 1k resistor and an igo adapter. Tore it apart and built like jig and like every end to a Macguyver episode the crazy contraption worked like a charm. Funny thing is I loaded stock 2.2 ROM, which in turn bricked the phone. I got the phone ! computer logo. So I used the jig again and got it flashed to stock and up from there to Cyanogenmod 2.3.3.
Thanks again everyone.

[Q] Bricked phone? flashed SlimICS through Clockwork

hey all, i've had my captivate for about two years now, and for a while i used cognition, then for the last year i've been using firefly. firefly has completely destroyed my phone's speed and responsiveness, and i needed to clean everything off and start with a minimalist ROM. so i picked slimICS.
i'm still very hazy on the details and terminology of flashing ROMs, but i got two to work (i remember using one-click root thing in 2010, and then in 2011 i flashed firefly through clockwork) so i figured it shouldn't be a problem to install slim, which i figured would be my last ROM until next year, when i'd get a new phone.
so i backed up my stuff, tried to get into recovery mode with the 3 buttons (didn't work, unsurprising since it didn't work last year either), took out my SIM, went to CWM, and selected the flash rom option. this restarted the phone and sent it into recovery mode--except it was the stock recovery, and i couldn't select anything because i think firefly made the phone think it was the i9000 model from canada, instead of the i897 captivate, so it assumed i had a physical "ok" button on my phone (which i obviously do not). i tried the power button, the various capacitive buttons on the bottom, nothing would select any of the options, so i just took out the battery and put it back in. the phone immediately booted into the CWM recovery menu, in which i selected flash ROM, and scrolled down to choose slimICS.
i let it do its thing for a while, it jumped between the AT&T white logo screen and a screen with scrolling text for like 5-10 minutes, then just stayed on the AT&T logo screen for another ten minutes. i should have left it for maybe a half hour to be sure, but i figured the install failed. i couldn't get out of this so i pulled the batttery. and now the phone is bricked (soft i hope). if i hold the power button it goes to the AT&T white logo, flashes briefly for a half-second and goes back to the screen, then stays there indefinitely. no button combinations seem to work. does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks!
Since you backed everything up, I'd suggest flashing a stock rom via Odin or Heimdall to clean everything up before moving forwards.
You can flash a non-bootloader one to be safe, or if you want to make sure you can flash anything, flash a package with Gingerbread bootloaders.

how do i flash anything in my phone's current condition? it doesn't turn on fully. it's stuck at the white AT&T logo.
Turn it completely off (pull the battery, if necessary), then hold V+ and V-, and insert a USB cable. That should put it in download mode. Once you're there, you can flash a stock rom (There's a stick with those roms in the development section).

doesn't work. as i mentioned in the OP, i can't get into download or recovery mode or whatever. these button combos have never ever worked with this phone. for example, holding + and - and inserting a cable with ODIN open has never done anything. that's why i used clockwork.
Sounds like u r gonna need a Jig. If u are on a pc, click on my sig link below and there u will find a link on how to make a jig and/or where to buy one.

is that guaranteed to work? or is it most likely? or is it unlikely at this point?
The jigs that I have made myself in the past and as well the professional made ones that I have purchased have always worked to get me into download mode.
The jig is worth a try, I suggest you should
if I'm reading the op right, and if memory serves firefly was an I9000 build and button combos are different. My suggestion would get the Odin kk4 one click with repartition and WITH boot loaders from 4-2ndtwin's sig links, open that and while powered off and holding just the vol- button insert the USB that should do the trick. I9000 builds use different boot loaders with different button combos. Since you will be flashing a boot loader package be aware this is when you can truly hard brick your device. Be sure you have a good connection and cable before starting. If you still can't get into download mode I can +1 on the jig. The jig and 4-2ndtwins one click has saved my bacon more than once.
ok so i bought the jig, and good news: it gets me into download mode! yay!
problem: i don't know where to go from here. i've tried the following:
A. after getting into download mode, i followed the ODIN method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266, meaning i flashed the gingerbread bootloader update (nothing happened to the phone, which made me confused when i got to step 7., because i was STILL IN download mode), then flashed the speedmod kernel (which reset the phone, but it just got stuck in the "SAMSUNG CAPTIVATE i-897" white text on black screen, forever. i had to do a battery pull. turning on the phone goes to the same screen and then it freezes. trying to hold all three buttons to go into recovery mode alternates between that screen and the white AT&T screen, actually alternates, forever if i let it.
B. after that failed, i tried using the 2.2 Heimdall one-click (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172) but the file, when run, says
Code:
ERROR: Drivers Not Found
Installing drivers
but i still followed the instructions (except the instructions say "Install driver" but the actual button is "Replace driver"?) in any case, this does nothing. and then checking off "Flash bootloaders" and doing it again does nothing. the phone remains in download mode.
C. so i wanted to try one-click downloader http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, but nothing pops up on the ODIN window when i plug my phone in. i can't even do anything.
please help!
please, does nobody know what to do?
Take a look at the "Captivate Connection Issues" thread for some more things to try. At this point, it sounds like you need to clear all the phone drivers off of your machine and reinstall them.

thanks, that worked! (it was my laptop that was the source of the connection issues i think; i tried all that stuff in the thread, but when i switched to the desktop, all of a sudden ODIN recognizes the phone!) i got my phone to flash ODIN one-click. so now i'm back to stock 2.1 eclair.
however, much to my dismay, i still can't get into recovery mode to (re-) root. the three button combo still does the weird flashing thing, where the white AT&T logo shows up, then the screen goes to black, then the AT&T logo, then black... ad infinitum. how do i either 1) enter recovery, or 2) re-root the phone + get a nice, lean, fast, modern ROM on it without going into recovery?
so far this thread has helped me unbrick the phone, now all i need is to update it from stock!

I could be wrong but when you do the 3 button combo it sounds like you are continually holding the buttons which will cause it to keep looping like you describe. Starting with your phone off hold down all three buttons. The phone will show the white ATT screen. Then if you had a custom kernel it would show the kernel splash screen, in your case you said it just goes black which is fine too. Then you will of course get the white ATT screen again. As soon as you see the white ATT screen again release all the buttons and that should boot it into recovery.

Then if you had a custom kernel it would show the kernel splash screen, in your case you said it just goes black which is fine too. Then you will of course get the white ATT screen again. As soon as you see the white ATT screen again release all the buttons and that should boot it into recovery.

i tried various durations of holding the buttons. none worked. 2nd AT&T logo, nope. 1st black screen, nope. 1st AT&T logo, nope.
Your gonna have to get ADB set up on your pc. Then... "adb reboot recovery" will get u into recovery mode.
