ok.... here's my deal.... i am being impatient, and i want to know if i can find froyo for my motorola milestone A855, how can i upgrade it without changing anything on my phone, so i don't need to install everything over, or re-do all the settings i put up.....and a few other questions
- will this make my phone unable to upgrade to the official froyo when its out?
- will this delete anything on my phone, so i can't just reset the whole thing?
- will it make a difference that i live in USA, and use tmobile?
thanks

Hey guys.
I know this has probably been asked/answered a million times before, but hopefully you can understand me wanting a final confirmation before i risk my £500 phone...I have done a lot of reading around this subject, and and *think* i have my head around the most of it now.
Sorry for the block of text, I have put my actual questions in blue to make them a little easier to spot.
So I have the 16GB Galaxy S from Vodafone UK. It is currently completely stock (not even rooted), and is running the JF3 firmware. The details of the phone are:
PDA: I9000XXJF3
Phone: I9000XXJF3
CSC: I9000VODJE4
The phone is unbranded, and will accept an o2 SIM, so I assume it is SIM unlocked.
I am wanting to try out Froyo on my device, and think the JM8 build is going to be the most appropriate.
Do I need to root/backup anything on my phone first? (I am fine with losing apps etc, and would rather reinstall from scratch anyway).
I have signed up to SamFirmwares, and have downloaded the file GT-I9000_I9000XWJM8_I9000XXJM4_CODE-MODEM, which I believe is the right firmware for my phone and region. I have also downloaded the s1_odin_20100512.pit file, which i *think* is the right one.
I also got the CSC_I9000OXAJM1.tar.md5 file which i think should be the right one. I also have Odin3 v1.3.
Can someone please just confirm these are the correct files for me?
So, all I need to do is:
- Start ODIN.
- Put my phone into download mode.
- Select the Re-Partition box, and make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked.
-Select the CODE file in the PDA box, and the Modem file in the PHONE box.
- Put the CSC_I9000OXAJM1.tar.md5 in the CSC box.
- Press Start.
Am I right to think my phone will now flash?
What are the likely-hood of me bricking/destroying my phone if I follow this procedure?
Again, I'm sorry that you have probably answered these questions a hundred times before, but hopefully you can understand why I want to be sure I'm doing this right .
Before you do anything please check if you CAN access download mode. If you can then its all GOOD! you are spot on and I congrats you on doing your research as many don't. Also PLEASE don't install the Froyo Betas as you can see for yourself (JPH/JP3) that theres ALOT of problems on it especially if you don't know much about flashing. Just wait another week or less for OFFICIAL FROYO as if something does go wrong we can actually get support from Samsung as its OFFICIAL.
Also NO you do not need to root your phone. You can do that if you choose to afterwards with a rom update/custom mod. Or just download the samsung root app from market rooting is very painless.
JM8 is NOT froyo.. It's eclair... (JP# is the currently designated Froyo series, but I suspect the designators may change after it becomes stable to the per-month thing)...
Honestly, at this point of time though, it isn't worth it. Samsung seems to have backported the highmem patch to eclair anyway, and Froyo isn't yet stable. Furthermore, there are reports of people's imei getting corrupted (which is fine if you back up /efs maybe, but it still isn't a safe operation).
Honestly, unless you have a need for the new API's, just wait until it's released (it's expected by the end of the month). And then, to be uber safe, use kies to upgrade.
Although, at this point of time, you should probably upgrade your firmware to a newer version of eclair anyway (using kies), because JF3 is ancient, and plenty of problems were fixed in August.
Thanks for the advice guys. I thought JM8 was a Froyo release. After researching more tonight, it seems the JP releases are less than stable at the minute, so i'll stay away from them and wait for the official release.
I updated my firmware via Kies this morning, and am now running:
PDA: I9000BUJM4
Phone: I9000BUJM3
CSC: I9000GVODJM3
The system seems to be running pretty much the same as before. There is no lag etc and it all runs smooth enough.
The only problem I have is that the software updated has now filled my phone with Vodafone branding. It has the Vodafone start screen, and loads of crappy Voda apps on it.
Is there a way I can remove these? or at least make sure I get a "clean" upgrade with the next software update (would removing the SIM before updating work?
You COULD root your phone and use Titanium Backup to remove the apps you don't want. But in all honesty I say get the latest official rom that your provider has. Be it the old JF3 as when Froyo comes out and you do (fingers cross) get a problem you can get actual support. This moment in time I would recommend you do nothing but go back to JF3 and wait for Froyo. But its your device so upto you
hi,
i've googled all over the place, but i can't seem to find a solution for my predicament, perhaps because it is probably quite silly.
i'm waiting for the froyo update for my SGS. here's the data from *#44336# :
PDA: I9000-JPJG8
Phone: I9000-JXJG2
CSC: I9000-JPJG9
I don't know what these mean at all, I just know that I'm currently running Eclair, and would like froyo as soon as it's out. My phone isn't 'with google'. It just has the android logo on the back. When I first got the phone it was without google market, so I used a code to change the CSC from XSS to XSG. I googled around to get this info.
Here's where my trouble begins. I want to know what my upgrade options are (I would like to keep the market), and whether I will be able to re-enable market if an update takes it away from me.
Thanks
PS: I think the XSS/XSG have something to do with the arabic language (i bought the phone in the UAE), but i still have no clue as to why one has market and the other doesnt.
No need to be confused. Just keep up your ante for the release of official Froyo launch from Samsung, allegedly at the end of October now. When it comes out, you will be notified by KIES about the update.
If you think you can not wait and you have the guts to have an adventure, you can always flash unofficial FROYO but then you might have to put some extra effort to get the market back.
Try this, if you don't want to wait for the official release.

Hello. I'm just a newbie on android system. I get my sgs yesterday. My friend bought it for me from Austria(he lives there) and i will use it in Turkey. When i used my sim card in there is sim lock request so i need to unlock sim.
Firstly i tried to upgrade firmware. I thinked that may surpass simlock part but it didn't work. I installed 3br update before it but after the firmware change 3br didnt run because of 2.1 update file. I installed couple of programs to easy root but now my sgs is messed up and there is no android market now. Only thing i want an updated and working phone with some applications :/. I know that there are my answers in forum because there is lots of good information about sgs but my phone is now messed up and i need to fix it step by step with some help.
I really need some help. Thank you.
I recently got a samsung captivate. I imported it because i live in new zealand, so its been unlocked to work with the local network (Telecom NZ). The people i bought it from seem to have changed the software in too many ways too explain (basically no samsung apps, swype, accelerometer or anything else that makes this smart phone better than an iphone).
I think my most logical way to solve this is to flash a stock captivate rom onto it. But will doing this lock my phone again? I still want to use the telecom mobile network, so basically all i want is all the software fixed to what it should be. I am currently running Android 2.1 i897UCJF6. So im looking for a link to a rom that will put it to whatever android they are usually sold with, im not looking for froyo or anything i just want what i paid for.
If you could help me with that it would be greatly appreciated
Also is there anyway to backup all my contacts? It came rooted so im just looking for the location to copy them off? or is their a program i can use? And will i be able to re-download my purchased apps from the marketplace?
Thanks,
Doc
Here is link to Oden One-click, that will take you back to stock AT&T 2.1.

Once it's unlocked, it will remain unlocked unless the nv_data.bin is restored to the original..

so heres what i did, i got a stock captivate, used odin to flash rom to galaxy i 9000 and its really buggy. i wish to flash back to stock rom and update to froyo then unlock it so i can use it on t-mobile. when i say really buggy i mean i cant get anything but G network maybe E if im in the middle of portland or salem, but always have full receptoin. now can anyone help me fix this so i can use it with t-mobile? if not then i would like to flash it to another rom but, it wont go into download mode since i dont have a home button to use. should i get a jig and do all that other stuff ive got to do or is there another way? can anyone point me into the right directoin. either post they know of or from experience. i would greatly appreciate it ive spent a few days searching and havent found much info thats helped.
Oh wow... First of all, flashing a i9000 ROM is really NOT GOOD. i9000 ROMs are for the i9000 phones, not the i897 (Captivate). As far as unlocking goes, I hope you haven't screwed up your IMEI (and such) data on your phone somehow while flashing different ROMs onto your phone. Unlocking can be done on both 2.1 and 2.2, but you will need the unlocking codes from AT&T themselves (easiest way).
For the download mode, if you can't get into the download mode via ADB... I would definitely try a USB Jig. Try the alternate key combos to try and get into download mode as well.
Owch. This is what happens when you don't read before you do things.
Hopefully you can get yourself into Download Mode so you can flash via Odin back to the stock ROM.
you do realize that by unlocking it and putting it on TMobile you will not get ANY 3g?

well i was fallowing advice from an idiot and a few other idiots who backed the info and was happy with what it had done with their phone. little did i know till a little bit ago is that it was for germany not usa. ok so i need to do some research on adb. now since i want to use this phone for t-mobile and do get into download mode should i flash to captivate stock then update to froyo then unlock or just flash to vibrant? im not going to be using this phone for calls or internet browsing unless on wifi and using skype. its only going to be used for texting and games and video and pics and all the other wonderful options this phone has. t-mobile has a pre paid texting only plan thats only $15 a month. and everywhere i go has free wifi, if not ive got my own way of getting wifi if ive got my laptop for ad-hoc with braodband card.
do i need to change anything with the phone if i just plan on using t-mobile???? cause it is considered a global phone or whatever and not locked cause it shows i have t-mobile or att or sprint network to choose from as before the flash it only showed att. or should i just fix this one and flash it all back to stock and sell it to buy a new used phone lol
thank you for your help and advice/ its greatly appreciated
just flash back to stock 2.1...unlock it and u can flash any awesome rom.most save your imei and nvdata...i was on darky 8,1 and used t mobile, even used all carriers in india
to get to dl mode use adb or jig....never flash i9000 roms directly, if u want, u can flash i9000 based custom roms we have in dev section..
