I decided to upgrade to Cog2.2beta5 from Cog2.1.4 today using ROM Manager. Everything seemed to go well but after install and reboot all I got was a black screen and subsequent reboots landed me at the same result.
So I thought restoring back to stock with Odin One Click from this forum, the one with all the ROM files built right in, was the best next step. I downloaded Odin and followed the instruction to the T and it got stuck at the PIT step. After a few attempts at it now my phone won't even power on. I've let it sit without a battery in for several minutes and even charged it on a wall charger for 30 minutes just to make sure it wasn't a dead battery. Still won't power on or respond at all.
I'm fairly new to all of this... Any ideas on what would cause a total melt down of the phone to the point of not even powering on? It has been flawless for me since launch.
Didi you download the drivers? also did you unplug the phone while doing the flash>/
pull battery sim and sd if you have one
Wait a minutes or so
plug in USB
hold vol up and down
put in battery
If the phone does not immediately go to download mode, you have a fancy paper weight that doesn't even weigh that much.

I did download the drivers and from everything I could see, my system and Odin recognized the phone without issue.
I had to unplug it during the process because the process froze in the same spot for well over an hour. I didn't see any other choice.

Guess it's a paper weight then because the phone won't power up at all let alone go into download mode.
Thanks for your time guys.
sounds like you might have done exactly what i did with my first captivate and yes it IS bricked! i know you will read "its impossible" to do that but i "thought" i followed the correct steps and flashed only a pit file. what it does is repartition your file system but apparently nothing is added after that...
not sure what steps you took on odin but it sounds like you got the same error i did and then the same issue so im going to assume the same thing has happened here...sorry matey

I had mine hosed for a while and this is what I did to get it back.
When it is unplugged and everything is out of the phone (sd, sim, batt) , hold the power button down for 10 sec, then release.
Put in battery, hold vol up + vol dwn, Plug into different usb port, Plug into phone.
That should get you into download mode
Mine did this too and the steps mentioned fixed it for me

I too accidently only wrote the pit file and it wouldn't do anything at all just blank screen . Make sure you remove everything open Odin one click, plug in your phone with the USB cable, hold down volume up and down and plug in battery it should start in download mode. It does work.

What did you try to flash with Odin? (with version, variant #, with/without bootloaders)
What was the Odin log?
nothing, no roms yet. i was in the first part of the instruction. this is what i follow
1. Download and install the correct drivers below (mac and linux don't need drivers)
2. Plug in your usb cable to your phone and computer
3. Open Odin
4. Enter Download Mode (see below)
5. Click Start
6. Be Patient, the first boot will take a while
where can i find the odin logs?

Recently tried to flash from JF6 to JH3 and failed. It's now stuck at the phone ! computer screen.
Here's what I've tried so far starting with all the pull sd,sim, batt out and put battery back in:
1. Hold both vol up and down, then plug in usb.
2. Hold both vol up and down, then plug in usb, and then hold power. Let it flash on and off until I get to the 2nd blank screen, then release power.
3. Hold vol up and power, then plug in usb. Let it flash on and off until 2nd blank screen, then release power.
Holding down and power doesn't make the phone!computer flash at all.
I'm really at a loss now. No idea how to get back into download mode... I wasn't able to use the key combos to do it before; just used adb.
Any tips? Help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I've always done after turning off the phone:
1. Plug in USB
2. Hold volume up + down
3. Press and hold power until it turns off for second time then let go (although it's worked for me on the first time it goes off)
Worked every single time for me.

Have you tied to Flash it with Odin back to stock? Always flash back to stock before flashing. Every thread starts with the same instructions, flash back to stock first. Not to kick you when you're down.
I'd flash back to stock with Odin.

He wouldn't be able to flash without getting into download mode now would he?
op: Make sure that odin is open and ready on your computer. if that doesn't work then i hate to say it but...
Looks like I've got an expensive paperweight? Luckily for me I got it yesterday...
Stupidly enough though, I probably should have returned it in the first place. It wasn't working quite right... I've never seen a phone not respond to button combos or have problems connecting to a computer via USB and I've owned my share of Samsungs. Each boot into their own recovery mode just fine via buttons... guess I won the lottery?
If anyone has some ridiculously convoluted way to get into download mode, I'd be glad to try it.
Did a bit of snooping...

It seems there are a fair amount of phones with disabled button combos...
when i flashed to jh3, i found doing the adb reboot download the easiest way to get into download, even when i messed up my phone and it would boot to galaxy s screen and it would get stuck. Found plugging it in via usb and then running the adb command
Ah... I see. Well, considering I can't get it to recognize it or anything... it's pretty much fubar. I tried my sister's captivate and it boots into download mode just fine with both vol + plug in usb.. so I assume I just had a defective unit that became more defective.
Thanks for the help all, and let's just have this be a lesson to anybody who wants to know, if you follow the instructions on the odin thread and you can't get in, either you're doing something wrong or the phone is wrong...
And adb never hurt anybody.
Thanks again everybody.

I just exchanged a Captivate for shutting down by itself, got one that can't three button reboot, accidentally bricked it and couldn't recover it. Exchanged it for yet another one that also can't three button reboot. Uggh!
I have the Rogers Captivate - SGH-i896. I was following a tutorial on enabling tethering on my phone (on maggadget) but something went really wrong. I got Odin3 working, but when my captivate restarted, it got the a screen with "AT&T World Phone" and froze. I unplugged my phone and restarted it, but everytime I restart my phone, it shows the "AT&T World Phone" screen and doesn't do anything else.
I can still restart to go into download mode.
Have I just killed my phone? Does anyone have suggestions as to how I can get my phone back up?
1. take battery out and then put it back in.
2. open odin
3. Hold both up+down volume button the plug phone onto PC. Keep holding till see download mode.
4. release volume button then click start on odin

Make sure you have the drivers and you are using Odin properly. The one click method is very simple. Read carefully!

You might need to build/buy a JIG j.v.douts
A JIG is something physical that you plug into your phone to force it into Download Mode if it's still possible.

hi, I was resetting my rogers captivate i896 back to factory rom ( was at 4.3)using Odin, but after it was done my phone was stuck on the A T&T world phone screen and blinks on and off. To make matters worst, I cant get back into download mode as when I try the battery show up on the screen empty. Please help
Did you try a jig? Download mode is not affected by flashing ROM, so it's still there. Might just be having trouble with the manual way.

Hi
I tried to remove Bejeweled using a program I downloaded (I can't remember the name). It said it would reboot twice, but it seemed to have frozen after the first reboot, so I pulled the battery.
Now, every time I try to turn the phone on, it goes into ClockworkMod 2.5.1.0 and stays there. None of the buttons do anything at all, so I can't get to any of the options.
Samsung Kies and Odin 3 don't seem to recognise the phone when I plug it in by USB and I can't find any button combinations that stop it going to ClockworkMod.
I only got the phone a few days ago, so I'm not sure if I can send it back and claim the Froyo update on Kies broke it. I would prefer to fix it myself though. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks in advance.
So can you get into download mode or not?
No, I can't get to anything other than clockworkmod, and that freezes.
When I plug the usb lead in, it turns on without pressing the power button, but still freezes at clockworkmod. Hope that helps.

What you want to do is, pull battery out, put it back in, Hold volume down and Home button, THEN put in the usb lead, That should put you into download mode, then you can flash thru odin
Pull ur battery so phone is completely dark hold the 3 button combo for the download mode the phone should power in download mode or last option is get a jig for a pound on ebay

Thanks for your help. When I tried azzledazzle's solution, it went to frozen clockworkmod again, but the Galaxy S screen at the start doesn't show. Also, my version has never responded to any key combos, even when it worked.
I have attached a picture of what Odin shows when I put the USB lead in. Not sure if I can do anything with it. By the way, I've never used Odin before so I don't know if there are any settings I need to change.
I'll order one of those 'jigs' but hopefully I can get it fixed before that arrives.
you have selected 512 pit, but you havent ticked re-partition, that is whats causing your problem.
you say your phone never responded to button combo's. does that mean you have never been in download mode ??
The 'jig' has arrived and put me straight into download mode! Definitely recommended for anyone who can't use the three button combos. I have used a new rom with the 512 pit and repartition unchecked, and Android 2.2.1 installed fine. This also solved the button combo problem.
In reply to azzledazzle, the only time I saw download mode before the jig arrived was when Kies mucked up an update.
I had Cognition 4 flashed but had a problem that whenever the battery was removed when the phone was on, about half of my apps, wifi, and texting would force close on reboot and never be able to open until I reflashed Cogntion. Because of this, I decided to try Serendipity VII. I put the zip file on my phone, rebooted into recovery, then tried to do the same thing that I did for Cognition. When I did this it said that it was installing, then said install complete without rebooting. I decided to reboot the phone, and when I tried, it keeps looping on the att screen. I do not see the battery charge signal when I plug it in. I see a loading gear for the battery for about five seconds, then the screen has electric looking blue lines flash through the center and then nothing. I cannot boot into recovery or download, it just keeps looping on the ATT screen.

How do I force it into download mode?
So you tried flashing a GB rom without first flashing GB bootloaders?
You should have read and followed the installation instructions on the Serendipity download page. Start Odin one click, see if you can get phone into download mode by any combo and see if Odin sees it. Flash stock and start again.
*If you're not on Gingerbread, you should be shot*

Sir try this one last thing, remove your USB Cable from your PC, remove your battery...
While holding down both (Up and Down) volume buttons, insert the battery and THEN connect your phone to your PC through USB, see if this puts it into Download mode.
If not, try doing the same just holding down the DOWN volume button. Hope this helps, it seems as if these combinations kind of vary from phone to phone. Cheers

I tried this and all it did was do the att loop screen thing. Also, my computer dinged that it saw a usb device being plugged in, but then the restart loop restarts the phone and continues this indefinitely. Thanks for the help anyway.
You don't need to buy a jig, just go do that thing where you get three (or four) resistors in series that totals 301k ohms and touch them to specific contacts in the usb port of your phone... look it up on xda, it's worked for most people.

Thanks, but I already screwed up my phone by doing something that I did not fully understand, it's a small wonder that I can use Linux and not be too confused. I think I will take the easy way out with this one.
Hmm I remember that often when I tried to put my phone into recovery mode or download, whenever I held the Power Button down, it would just keep looping. When you but the battery on and connect your phone, make sure you are not holding the Power button, just the volume ones. Perhaps it is your case?

It loops if whether or not I hold any buttons down. If I hold the power button down while trying to get into download mode, then it just turns it off.
Turn off the phone, remove the battery, get a stock odin one click for the captivate.

Start odin, plug the phone into the USB cable, hold the volume up/down key or try any combination up/down or both. Insert the battery and hopefully it will go into download mode.

Hi. I'm unable to get into recovery mode after I flashed the Talon kernel as per the instructions here.
http://www.team-continuum.net/forum...ses/(guide)general-installation-instructions/
I'm consistently able to get into download mode and reflashed the talon 0.1.2 kernel as per the instructions there, but still to no avail. Any other suggestions to get my phone into CWM ?
Im trying to flash Continuum 6
Might as well get the Jig easy Download mode xD. I made mine myself cost a whole $2.50 for one xD
Phone locked up while using web browser. Turned it off. Pulled battery. Tried to restart. No powerup. Nada. It's rooted with Jocala's custom kernal on the stock, current-update ROM. CWM installed. Study these symptoms and comment on whether it is dead due to hardware or software fatal, unsolvable issues:
1. When I try to boot up by holding in power button and volume up button, nothing happens. It does not turn on and does not boot into recovery regardless of how long I hold those two buttons in.
2. When I try to do the factory reset trick of holding the volume up/down entire button pressed in (not power up or power down but the whole button pressed in) plus the power on button, the screen lights up with the SAMSUNG name in white, and then immediately the screen goes black and white letters up top read RAMDUMP MODE. Cause: Force Upload. That stays on forever and ever until I power off the phone or pull the battery, and the whole thing repeats if I try the process again.
3. I tried pulling the battery and holding in the power button for about 20 minutes and that didn't fix anything.
4. Booting by holding the volume-down button and power on boots into the "WARNING -- A custom OS can . . ." screen with the exclamation point in a yellow triangle , and I can use the volume up key to continue with the loading a custom OS, and when I do volume up, I get the ODIN Mode screen, the android robot icon and the words "Downloading . . . Do not turn off target!!" If I plug into my computer, the computer doesn't recognize the phone. When I plug it in with Kies turned on, Kies says it is trying to connect, but it never connects, even if I let it plugged into Kies for hours. I don't get a Kies error message, either.
I have tried all these tricks with SIM card in and SIM card removed. With MicroSD card installed and MicroSD card removed. I have tried spare batteries from my other phone that are good and fully charged. I have tried using different USB cables that work for data transfer on my other phone. Am I missing a trick? Is this patient dead on the operating table? Must I part with $175 to buy a new phone? Please, Android doctors, provide some patient consultation. Thanks.

Yes, current drivers are installed on the computer. When you say "then run the Odin program," what do you mean? My plugging in process was simply to get into the Odin Mode and then I plugged it into the computer. At that point, in Windows Explorer, the computer did not recognize that an external device was plugged in. I would normally get a new F and D drive showing when I plug a phone in.
I am not aware of what this "Odin program" is that you mentioned. Please elaborate. After my initial root process, I have used CWM to flash zips off the microsd card and have not been plugging it into the computer to do things, so I might be deficient in my knowledge of what to do with the computer when the phone is in Odin mode. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I am getting some hope. But since I can't boot the phone, I can't get in to make sure USB Debugging Mode is selected. Will this prevent me from connecting to ODIN? I found the ODIN download and the recommendation to also download drivers for DOWNLOAD, and I'll do that. But will the USB Debugging issue cause me difficulty? I can't get to this until this evening, so that's why I'm asking rather than just trying. Please advise. Thanks!

Using Odin without ROM saved to internal memory?
Will I be able to use ODIN to fix the phone if I haven't yet saved the replacement ROM to the phone's internal memory? The instructions I see for using ODIN all seem to assume that the phone is working and booting up, and they start with the instruction to save the new ROM file to the phone's internal memory. Since I'm trying to restore a bricked phone, without having the ability to first copy the ROM onto the phone's internal memory, what are the steps I will follow upon opening the Odin software and connecting the phone? Thanks again for the input so far. Maybe I can save this bricked phone (my girlfriend's phone -- so I will look like a true hero).

OK i see your confusion. On the wiki there are two types of ways to return to stock. One is through recovery, which i am assuming you can not get into. The second is the Odin way. If you can get to recovery that would be safer. I think the way that works for me is take out the battery, plug in USB, hold volume up and insert battery.

Odin is going to flash the stock ROM to the phone. You don't need to copy anything to it. The steps you need to follow are in the link I posted to the wiki.

OK, so it won't power up and won't boot to ODIN or to recovery. No combination of button pushing does anything. Nada. Black screen. Is there any final trick to try? Or do I throw it away?
