help!! g1 not allowing me to do anything - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok so here's what's going on. my g1 has been off and in storage for a month now because i had the mytouch 3.5mm. i figured maybe i can just use my g1 as a device for around the house. so i plug it in let it juice up unplug it and turn the power on. it goes past the g1 screen and directly to the yellow exclamation with the g1 in front.now i aint no newb. ive rooted my phone a couple times and know how to search the forums for help. so i tried to update it press alt+l the alt+w to wipe and also tried to wipe cache..then update from zip. it reads the update gets all the way to installing update and then just aborts the installlation. now ive tried multiple updates and it does it to all of them. this is what i get
Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
installing update....
installation aborted..
so is stock g1 cant say anything else cause really cant get any where else..
also when i choose rebot phone it takes me to recovery page then to a bluee screen telling me to press send to restore phone to stock i press send and nothing happens.. read on this site to wait 8-12 mins cause it takes that long to write stuff and load.i waited 1/2 hr to an hr and still nothing happens..any one got a idea to help me out...i've tried alot of stuff and if u wnt me to get in details i can.. also if u want screen shots i can post them as soon as i get home..
thanks in advance.. i love this site like i said i come here for all the know how to stuff that i've learned and even refrerred some friends looking to root there phone to come here as well..

HELP PLEASE - before i get so angry with my G1

When I first got my g1 I loved it. Then the cupcake update happened. Everyone was overjoyed - except me. My phone went much slower and juddery, and loads of little errors happened. Now these are the 2 problems i need help with:
Rotating. The phone stays in either portrait or landscape mode and won't rotate to the correct mode with the keyboard sliding in or out.
And
Messaging. Whenever I send an sms message i get a force error as soon as the text is sent through.
PLEASE HELP ME :'( :'( before i go to t-mobile and cancel my phone - it has got that bad ((((((((((((((((((((((
If you need anymore info just ask thanks,
Ross.
You might want to try re-flashing the cupcake update, if your phone is rooted then you can search around and find out how to do it easily. If not you need to find the official tmobile cupcake update, I dont have any link for it but I am sure if you search here or google you will find it. You then need to plug your g1 into the usb on your pc and mount the sd card, if it is a .nbh file name it DREAMIMG.nbh, if its a .zip name it update.zip and copy it over. Then reboot into spl by holding camera+power and follow onscreen instructions. Good luck.
Try doing a wipe and see if that fixes your problems.
If wiping doesnt fix your problem id hit t mobile up for a replacement

Please Help! My G1 won't boot...

I had a small mishap with my G1, i out it in a wet cup holder and it got the bottom area of the phone wet (buttons/trackball area). I dried the phone out for a couple of days (used the rice method) and started it up...
The phone charges and powers on but I get the triangle with an exclamation mark icon. I've tried putting different firmware versions onto the SD card and naming them update then used the Alt+S and I get errors. I've tried probably around 40 different RC's ranging from RC 29 to God knows what...
an example of the errors I'm getting is:
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
--Install from sdcard....
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update....
E:Error in check_prereq (status 256)
E:Failure at line 1:
run_program PACKAGE:check_prereq 1242268990
Installation aborted
I would greatly appreciate any help with this! I NEED to fix this phone! Thank you in advance!
PS: sorry for posting this in the sticky thread, i did it by mistake while reading that thread!
I did not know there was 40 rc s, try getting yourself the rc29 dreaimg.nbh, do not rename to update.zip, put it on the root of your sd and enter the bootloader by pressing power and camera and see if that will load it
where can i download the rc29 dreaimg.nbh?
Check out one of the threads for rooting your phone, should find a good d/l there, it's the one that you use to downgrade your phone, you will lose root and have to unroot it the old fashioned way now
oh ok, thank you! my phone was never rooted so that's not an issue. i just need it up and running so i can live my life again... I'll give it a shot!
Well I hope it works for you, now would be a good time to think about rooting your phone since you will already have done the first step, if you want stock, you will have to wait for the ota updates which can take up to 72 hours to receive, so you will have none of the cupcake goodness like auto rotate or widgets. There is ways to get the update quicker but I am unaware of them
Download the RC29 dreaimg.nbh HERE.
Let us know if this flashes for you. Remember, you just put this file on the root of your SD card and enter bootloader by holding Power+Camera.
thank you for everybody's help, but i still haven't resolved the solution. i put dreaimg.nbh on the root of my SD, held camera and power. the G1 logo screen shows up, then the phone just goes back to the trianlge with the exclamation mark...

G1 possibly bricked; stuck in recovery console [researched]

i will try to be as detailed as possible. im coming from the kaiser community so go easy on me
when i had recieved the phone it would turn on go past the tmobile g1 screen and go into the recovery console. the console read. JF 1.41.
after reading around the best option i got was reverting everything back to factory settings.....and so i did. i installed the factory spl went back to rc29....then updated to rc 30 and installed the new cupcake.
everything was fine except for i couldnt get the phone activated given im an AT&T user.
this morning i finally recieved the unlock code from tmobile and when i turn the phone on with the att simcard, it gave me the triangle with the exclamation screen.
so i hit alt +l then alt w and after a reboot it would bring me back to the same screen. Also this recovery screen is diff from the jf 1.41 (im guessing this is the factory console).
now im out of ideas as to how to get this phone back in order. i would love flashing the DREAIMG.NBH but sadly my phone refuses to go in bootloader.
ive been trying to hold camera+ power and its jsut loads up the tmobile g1 screen.
any and all advice/helps are appreciated.
-thank you
so this is totally weird. i leave the phone unplugged with the battery out for about 3 hours. came back to work on it....turned it on and well it loaded and got me to the home screen ( no sim card ).
so i powered off the phone and inserted the AT&T simcard turn it on and it shows me the same screen again with the triangle and exclamation point.
how do u explain that ?!
pressed power for 3 seconds and then let go and held down the back key. it flashed the bootloader tricolor screen and then said ""everything will be reset to factory defaults .press send to reset"" and when i did that there was no change........nothing happened. ended up pulling the battery out..
Same problem..
I have very similar problem.. but mine takes much more than 3 hrs to come back.. and even then , the task manger keeps popping up from time to time in the home screen ,, so i guessed my home button was stuck or something...
After i found your "problem Sovled" post in another theread on 11th oct ..i thought i better take your suggestion before taking phone apart..
I was on 1.5 version and 2.22.19.26I radio. also i do not know whether i'm in RC29,30,33 ..
i'm really confused about all this radio, firmware ,recovery things....
Please Guide me ..
well first you need to get in your ph to find out if u have rc29. if you are able to get to home screen just hit menu - setting - about phone - all the way down it'll tell you what you are running.
i followed this guide to help me flash it to the cyanogenmod rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=563679
hopefully it helps. but if you are able to get into bootloader unlike me then jsut flash the rc29 hopefully it will solve your problem.
my home key acted like it was stuck but now everything is working fine.
Thanks for Replying so quickly ..
I managed to go to the bootloader screen(tricolor) ..actually it went without even pressing the camera button(any idea why??) after leaving the phone without battery for about 5 hours.. and i flashed the Dreaimg-RC29 file .
Since then i'm Stuck in recovery mode again.. but this time the recovery utility is different (yellow letters)..i.e hopefully RC29 is succefully installed.
I wanted to complete doing your suggested guide before asking any more questions, but now i unable to so what shud i do now?
IS the task manger popping up involuntarily sometimes for you in the cM builds?
Can it be that you had a hardware button issue, which somehow rectified itself when going to Cyanogen..
I really appreciate your taking time to answer my questions ..
well sounds like jsut what had happened to me.
make sure you have tmobile simcard on you with a dataplan.
you're going to have to leave your phone off without the battery or just turned off for a while. from here on out it was trial and error. i kept trying to turn the phone on hoping it would go past the recovery screen once it did i activated the phone and finally completed the root process.
as for the cyanogen mod rom i think you are right. though on my initial flash i had a bunch of force closing apps but it all fixed itself upon a restart. ever since then i haven't seen the recovery mode every time i boot it.
PS: that reocvery mode that you see is the stock recovery meaning yes u have flashed RC29 sucessfully.
so i jsut flashed to CM 4.2.3.1. and well im back to square one. im booting into the recovery by default. obviously confirming my doubts about the hardware problem.
im going to try and leave the phone off for a while and see if i can get it to load up. usually that solves my problem.
Oh..
Thats depressing.. Anyways... Lets do it together then I have kept my phone unsed for about 16hrs now.. hope it works ..
Have you tried the HTC Diagonistic program for g1 (DREADIAG.nbh) ?.. I am yet to try it out as i cannot go to the bootloader..
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7NRX7H40
which version of cyanogen were you using before this happened?
i have not tried diagnostic. iw as going to use ADB to push the recovery on there but it went into bootloader.
i was using cyanogenmod rom 4.1.9999. now i have updated to 4.2.3.1.
actually iw as working on it last night. i re did that whole guide except for downloaded the new rom and flashed it.
so as of now once again that hardware flaw is gone and the phone is working fine.

Did you update from 4.1.9999 straight into 4.2.3.1? If so, that's the problem (maybe).. I suggest you install the HTC 1.6 ADP Rom (link in the cyanogen 4.2.3.1 post) then upgrade to 4.2.3.1. Make sure everything is updated.... rom, recovery & spl (before you upgrade SPL make sure you have the most recent radio version first! or you'll brick the phone). then give it a try and see what happens...
you are right. the first time i just flashed the new rom. the second time around i followed the guide except for i flashed the latest cyanogen rom.
I'm not able to make it go to the home screen even after so many attempts..
i could only manage to go to the bootloader screen once and flashed the RC29 and i'm stuck there
Can you elaborate on how you got to the Home screen , like how long you keep it off or press which buttons to start ?
I'm not in the US , and have bought this phone from Ebay (new, never used) from a seller with good feedback for G1 (wanted this phone very badly). I was using the phone for barely 3 days when i did a factory reset from the phone and this problem started occurring .
IS there anything else i can do..?
Thanks for Helping..
Still waiting for your answer

how did you flash the RC29? after pressing the power button
did it give you any errors? once its flashed, reboot by pressing home and back (or w/e the SPL tells you to)
it should boot into the rom
Home button problem (repaired/solved)
Firstly, thanks for responding ..
I had flashed RC29 when it had gone to the tricolor bootloader screen on its own
but after that it would not go anywhere other than recovery(exclamantion mark)
Now good news
4 hours back i opened the phone again(third time) , and took a safety pin and started scraping(gently) the non shiny parts of the connector ( daughter board to main board) .
I think it was previously shorted near that area , so by scraping removed the shorted metal joints .. and now the phone booted up to RC29 (just like that) and i even installed the cyanogen mod ..
Many thanks to u all .. hope this Comes UP in google search for people with similar problems(and there are many)...
KEYwords: Home button stuck on recovery no booting
Ah wow didnt think of that lol.. glad to see you got it to work

E:Varification failed
Instalation aborted
im at a loss now. any ideas???
What recovery are you using? the alt L thing makes me think you are still using stock.
If you are using RA you don't need to rename it to update.
im using recovery-RA-dream-v1.2.3.img
ihave just tried to use the one u are using but flashrec wouldnt see it, imreally at a loss now.
i just tried to install android stoc 1.0, so that i could start again but that to wouldnt install. so it looks like i may be stuck with 1.5 for now atleast.
edit- it wernt the one u have it was the recovery-RA-dream-v1.6.2.img i tried second
mate u have Uk model?right
just intall flashrec and 1.6.2 recovery image
start flashrec / in the box type something like
/sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.6.2.img
then flash it dont interpt then process and u got root ...
note : put img file in the root(main) of ur sd card
thanks for your help jamb, but i seem to have damaed the boot loader somewhere on my rooting journey ,
i think i know where i done it as after post one, and before post two, i did (i think) get root and managed to flash superCSDIv14, (i got the custom spash with the android bot peeking from behind the A) but after the splash the phone just went black.
when i got your first post i decided to follow that post, i managed to flask android 1.0, then update to 1.5 then from that point i couldnt flash nothing, i even tried to flash back to 1.0 at one point.
last night i went to bed thinking that id be stuck with 1.5, but when i woke, i made the QTA upgrade msg on my phone so i ran it and now am back to where i started 1.6 (which is good cos google nav was released yesrerday)
as the OTA update worked all must not be broken so i decided to start again and tried to flash 1.0, it just faid so. my friend i am giving up, thank you for your time.
stephen.
its been two days now since i gave up on my root of the G1 and am starting to get the craving to start tinker with t againg, i dont want it to beat me.
can anyone outthere shed anylight on my plight. also give me some pointers.

Phone stuck on moto logo screen.. NEED help Please

Moto droid stock 2.1, refurbished, activated just a few days ago..
Ok so yesterday I had a lockup and the phone would not reboot. I kept trying to get it to turn on with consisted of powering up the phone getting lockedup/stuck on the motorola M logo for many min's then would pull the battery and try again. After about 8 try's it booted up and worked..
Then last night locked-up again and now it will not get past the M.. I tryed a hold x with power and wipe data and foctory reset. it seems to work but does say e:can't open /cache/recovery/command and then says abunch of stuff looks like it's working. BUT still will not load past the M logo
Is my phone dead is there a way to recover from this ? can I just load a NEW OS somehow ?
Already talked to verizon and there going to send me a new phone but will not be getting it till monday or tuesday and I really need a working phone for the weekend..
HELP !
That sounds like a hardware or firmware issue. Unfortunately, you need to just wait for your new phone. You don't want to risk loading an SBF file onto your Droid while it isn't functioning correctly. Even if you are successful - it more than likely will not fix your issue.
Hate to say it, but... just wait it out.
