Hi all, I am not a hacker but am very interested in windows phone 7. Currently, I have a Samsung Galaxy S from Bell, and I was wondering if windows phone 7 can be hacked on to it since it is a near identical to the Samsung Focus?

I am interested too. Can put in donation for the developers.
Well considering there are hardware differences between even just the Vibrant and the Captivate that require different kernels for Android I think a port of Windows Phone 7 would be rather difficult to pull off as there won't be any source released that can be tweaked & recompiled for the Captivate.
Android = Open Source (Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software. Open source licenses meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open source software is available within the public domain. Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.[1] The term open-source software originated as part of a marketing campaign for free software.[2] A report by Standish Group states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.[3][4])

The purchaser, or licensee, is given the right to use the software under certain conditions, but restricted from other uses, such as modification, further distribution, or reverse engineering.)
But, the HTC HD2 has recently booted into a real version of Windows phone 7. So, if a version of Windows Phone 7 is obtained, it could quite possibly be put onto the Galaxy S devices, you know, if a Galaxy S owner really wants to.
I don't think this is possible. No android phone has dual booted yet. Plus WM isn't as open as android so I doubt it. Its not bad to dream though is it?

That phone is a windows phone already though. Captivate is android
Well.. leave it up to the hackers and I know they will find a way to do it.
But... most of the hacks out there have been done with devices with a *nix backbone in it.
Apple = Free BSD
Android = Java/Linux
Windows = Windows
I think you will see some hacks for the Windows 7 phones - I'm pretty sure it won't be as nice as the Android series, nor do I think anyone would want to port Windows onto an existing Android device.
I really think someone should get windows phone 7 onto this device, I would easily choose it over froyo. I am in love with everything about that phone and would love to be able to have it on my Captivate
^so get an hd2 or samsung focus or whatever
Thats the Point dude. Samsung Focus is almost like the Galaxy S. So I could imagine, that if you can gain the source files from Focus, you can port winphone7 to galaxy s So everybody with a Samsung Focus. UNlock the phone, read out the nand, give it to a coder/dev And lets hope for the best and support him

You or any dev is *not* authorized to hack and release the windows ports. It could become a legal issue.

Just offer your Captivate for trade on craigslist. You'll get WP7 a lot faster that way vs. waiting for an SGS port (because never is a really long time).

About the only way this is going to be possible is if you have friends at Microsoft that have the authority to develop windows mobile on a phone that they have no actual interest in. Not to mention I doubt Samsung would even let them haha. In summation no you cant put windows on the captivate.
Maybe with the new MS - ARM agreement we will be able to get a working ROM for Galaxy S(I and II).
Guys , with the unbrickable mod(I have it) we can test it . And AdamOutler said it would be possible to do it because WP supports our processors.

Is there any cooked windows mobile ROM for this phone, i9000?
does anyone know if Samsung will release ROMs for Galaxy with WM7?
This doesn't make any sense. Why would on install wm on the GS? Just get an HD2 or wait for a WM7 device.
Lol this is too funny.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The problem is you are not likely to find support for anyone doing this for 2 main reasons.
1) Most people prefer Android.
2) It would be illegal, Windows Mobile has a licencing fee that was not paid for with your phone. (You see Android ports on WM phones because Android is free, it isn't allowed the other way around)
So you should not maintain any hope that it will never happen.
Samsung has other phones in the works that will support Windows mobile. They've just announced a blackberry styled windows mobile at the commincaAsia conference this year.
I highly doubt their windows mobile line will come any where close to what their Galaxy (Android) family.

Cooked windows mobile ROM for Galaxy S i9000 will be performed in the future.
Can't believe that people still wants Windows mobile, I'm currently stuck with windows mobile and i get frustrated every day. Waiting for my Galaxy S to arrive =)
Like to microsoft use the the galaxy s as a test device for wm7?
Like how they are doing with the i8910 Omnia HD.
I think it would be interesting to see how it performs with the hardware in the SGS. I do miss some of me apps on me Touch hd which is why I've kept it, tomtom for 1 and its easier to get flash support (cant wait for Froyo).
Also easier to change the system setting such as the bluetooth's minimum bitpool coz my sgs sounds rubbish in the car.
Wait for WM for SGS????
Wait for WM for SGS???? Don't hold your breath... LOL
(Running WM in SGS is like putting a "fiat punto" engine in a ferrari...)
Why would someone want something as outdated as WM? This OS is dead. WM7 is years behind Android...
I've been using WM for the last 7 years. My last WM phone was a Omnia 2 - The phone is great but I regret so much investing money in a device which OS is no longer supported by Microsoft... My only hope is Android for my WM phone.
Why you ask ? For the fun of it, of course !
Of course WM is outdated, but it's be "fun" to play with it on the Galaxy S, that's all ^^

Can WinMo actually be ported to other devices? I read somewhere that this is next to impossible since WinMo is closed.
Im guessing youre not spamming. Since youre registered since 2007.
I wonder how to make all the drivers? Although I've heard rumors that a SGS similiar device is coming for win mo. 7 so those could be used I guess.
*sigh* Closed source probably isn't a problem. If anything, it can actually be a good thing sometimes. It only generally benefits those who want to modify the core of a system (because it isn't extendible enough), or security patches.
For instance, even on Windows, IFS allows EXT3/EXT4 drivers to be developed without Windows source code, and Microsoft have actually evolved past Linux in regards to backwards compatibility (you don't need to recompile their modules every kernel release).
What's important is that the OS is designed for ARM, and their driver development SDK is comprehensive enough. So is it?
Right now im just makeing open bootloader to make it actually run. Else for drivers and all we need more developers. And this will take time
As i have gone through loader can be run since i have access to read n write on nand.

Where is it? I can't wait any more....
i would rather NOT run WM in my SGS
it'll defeat the whole purpose of getting the SGS
However if we can do Dual Boot, then it'll be intersting to play around with WM7 on the SGS
Since i have many programs that i still can't find replacement for in Android
it'll be handy to be able to Dual Boot to WM to run the old software
Hello everyone,
Is it possible to run dual OS on the galaxy S tab? Like Android and Apple !?

Seems like a legitimate question to me, ViewSonic's ViewPad 10 already does Android-Windows dualbooting, and XDA itself has a thread about dualbooting the HD2 with WM and Android.
If the OP's asking about Android and iOS specifically though, then probably the answer might be no. If someone could do it though, it might actually be a good thing for the Android crowd: shows the Apple fans that choice and customizability is a good thing.
I was thinking the other day that my Tab would be pretty cool if running Windows Thin PC, saw info and a download on the MS site the other day while working on my wifes netbook.
I dont see a problem with either a full working version of Ubuntu or Windows on the GT and Android, or just the full OS. Seems reasonable to put an OS on what is essentially a tablet PC.
I would think its just a matter of a bios, and loading the OS, but I am not a programmer, so I could very well be wrong.
But....I'd load Windows or Ubuntu on the tab if it gave me the 3G ability as well as all other functions.

IIRC I think there's already a thread on XDA on bringing Ubuntu to the Tab. With Windows it might be trickier. The ViewSonic ViewPad 10 runs on Intel Atom, which is already used by other netbooks that run Windows. Windows might not be designed to run on ARM however, which is used on many Android devices. Processor design differences may be the key factor in porting the OS. (I've gotten Gingerbread to run on my Atom netbook though, alas I still couldn't get the touch screen to work)
Would be the first to jump onto dualbooting Android with Windows if it ever comes to fruition though; I'm a Windows developer and it'll be cool if I could write small apps and use them on my Tab.

You can't run Windows because there is currently no ARM version, though MS say that they will support ARM in Windows 8, but by the time this sees the light of day, the Tab will be obsolete.
There is a thread in the dev forum about porting Ubuntu to the Tab, but I believe it is still a long way from fully functional.
Regards,
Dave

since both iOS and Android are ARM based in most cases, you could probably make it happen.
Both Android and iOS are Unix based, so we could achieve this.
Also
It could be easier to port iOS than Honeycomb because iOS source code is avalaible for public, for improvements and bug seeking.
So, Yes, we could have dual OS on the tab, it could be windows, Ubuntu, Maemo, iOS and even Symbian

Is there any chance of it ever happening?
I had to say a sad goodbye to my HD2 WP7 to make way for my new Galaxy Note.
Personally, I prefer the WP7 OS to Android, and it would be a dream come true if it were ever available on a Note.
The problem here is that with a Linux-based operating system port all of the components are open source and hackable in order to get them to work on specific devices. With a Microsoft operating system this is *not* the case since MS don't open source any of their components and thus it would be damn near impossible to get this to work on a device it wasn't intended for.
The only exception here would be if there was some kind of emulator of another device which it *was* designed to work on developed for Android but I really can't see that happening since I just don't think it has the same following as Android and thus there wouldn't be much of a market for it.
TL;DR version: No.
Although we might be able to install windows8 arm at the end of the year.
For hackers and tweakers as a lot of us are, this opens some nice horizons
so why didnt you just get a wp7 handset? the note wont be running anytime soon, you know how much hacking and that the hd2 has a nice boot loader to aloow magldr to interface with it to get the other os supported?

I love everything about the Note except Android, but I also love WP7. So I had to make a tough decision, and the Note just edged it
The title says it all, but is there any ways? I've always been curious, but never got a chance to ask it being we didn't have our own forum.
No real chance of anyone doing this. Two quick reasons.
Windows Phone is closed source and proprietary. No starting point from a code base. Only way is a complete reverse engineering of the OS, and that is unlikely.
Microsoft set minimum hardware standards for both WP7 and WP8. The Exhibit II doesn't meet the bar (might be close for WP7, but not for WP8). I don't think the complete standard is publicly available, but RAM is likely too low for our phone.
There are far more enticing projects out there.

Yeah, but going the other direction WP7 --> Non-Windows device is a much harder task. Likewise for porting IOS --> Non-Apple device.
It's hard enough porting Android where you have 98% of the source tree and must beg, borrow, steal, or invent the lacking drivers.
I suppose anything is possible, given today's crop of energetic kids.

Launcher 7 in the market is pretty cool. Checked it out for kicks on an older phone I have. Give you the Live Tiles thing. I've never used a Windows phone so I don't really know how it compares. Looks cool though.
Thanks for that.

I actually was looking into this a while back. I don't think its impossible. There is a Nokia lumia that uses the same soc. And there is also a Samsung windows phone that is very similar and uses the same soc. However its is effectively impossible due to the closed nature of wp.

Is it possible to run an actual Windows Rom in an android device? I remember hearing about this probably a few years ago with wp7, I could've sworn people had figured it out. I've got an AT&T note and miss Windows, but not enough to permanently switch to a Windows device. Any ideas?

Ignore the genius who says never. It comes down to hardware support. If you had two phones on the market with identical hardware, one running Windows Phone, one running Android, then you might be able to switch the bootloaders and operating systems. WP8 has a new secure boot which I know less about. WP7 didn't, but some of the bootloaders were still locked.
So yes, it's possible, but I don't know of a compatible Android device. The first I'd look at would be the ATIV S and the Galaxy S III, but I expect they're very different. There are a few slightly more complicated options but they're not really worth mentioning because.. developers just aren't interested.
I'm sure you could do it if you were willing to give up the rest of your life for a while. Shame isn't it? You'd think MS would release Windows Phone as a download for existing popular handsets in the same way Canonical is doing for their fledgling OS.
