[Q] How Can I Root a Telus Milestone On Mac? - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

I am on Mac and not many of the Motorola drivers are supported? Is there already a thread on this? Thanks in advance

Drivers aren't needed, Mac comes with them already. Download one-click root from the market or whatever, or get a PC. The .sbf method won't work, as you need RSD Lite which is Windows only.
I highly suggest the one-click method to just save yourself the headache.

Typical mac user
(No offense meant)

? Me or donny? If you meant me, the drivers are there..once I was rooted, I could shell in without any drivers downloaded or anything.

Mac users are generally proud of how their "OS doesn't ever need any drivers" =P

Wasn't trying to be proud, but it's true, drivers are rarely necessary.

Mac OS is great because its based on FreeBSD. There is a unix app that does the same as RSD Lite, it can be found here
Simply chmod +x and then run ./sbf_flash yourblah.sbf

do what I did... bootcamp your mac, then rooted normally

Hi everyone,
Here is a really brief tutorial, how you can get any Optimus 2x rooted via your computer and the SuperOneClick program:
PLEASE, READ THE WHOLE #1 POST, BECAUSE IT HAS SEVERAL GUIDES, SO YOU SHOULD TRY EVERYTHING BEFORE ASKING! DON'T SPAM THE THREAD IF POSSIBLE!
UPDATE: April 15th, 2014 - none of the links are valid anymore, and I don't have the files neither the Optimus 2x anymore, so sorry everyone, but it is pointless to keep poking this thread.
1. Install the USB driver needed to have ADB access to the phone, you can download it from here:
UPDATED: April 4th, 2011
LGUnitedMobileDriver_S4981MAN32AP22_ML_WHQL_Ver_3.2.exe
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=M8OF7XGT
or if the link above doesn't work:
http://www.multiupload.com/ZII8RRUXHR
2. Connect your phone, enable USB debugging (Settings->Applications->Development)
3. Run SuperOneClick
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
4. Choose root!
5. Run the test in the end...and you will have it, you got root access on your 2.2.1 LG Optimus 2X device!
+1 I recommend you first uninstalling the Car Home app and F-Secure (if you are not using it) because it is highly responsible for freezes and instabilites (AFAIK).
If the tutorial above fails, here is djmcnz's method:
Use the psneuter option, I had the same problem with rage, psneuter worked instantly.
Optimus 2x, Unbranded, Android 2.2.2 (out of the box, no OTA)
All I did was:
Install LG driver (first post)
Open SuperOneClick 1.7
Select psneuter
Hit root
Check Superuser app
No reboots or shell root required.
Su is permanent, withstands a reboot.
IF YOU GET DRIVER NOT SIGNED OR OTHER ISSUES AT STEP 1, here is something that could help you:
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/driver.php
One more guide, this may help you too (credit goes to Maliacrete):
For all those who get stuck at "waiting for device" with the SuperOneClick try running it as an Administrator (right click, Run as Administrator) or follow these:
a) make sure your phone is "seen" from your pc under hardware (http://www.junefabrics.com/android/driver.php). Follow the instructions here. If needed install your drivers from the link on the bottom of the junefabrics page.
b) Download the PdaNet from here (http://junefabrics.com/android/download.php), when prompt to replace the drivers, press NO.
c) if at this point the PdaNet istallation tells you that it cannot detect any phone you need to go back to the drivers problem. No correct drivers (debugging), No root.
d) Run the SuperOneClick and it will surely do the job.
You can also get some more infos on here (http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/11/how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method/)
I wander will this work with version 2.2.2 and can the root be undone?
will this work on the new LS670ZVC update from OTA?
svengalis:
I suppose yes, the root could be undone easily.
NextelFoe:
You should try
With 2.2.2 it does't work
Any ideas?

[Q] Odin on Ubuntu? How to?

can i install odin on ubuntu and flash my phone?? How??
I guess Odin still is not supported on OS other than Windows. Correct me if I'm wrong. And for getting Odin worked on Ubuntu, you may need to install VirtualBox and install Windows, and access inside it.
ok it is possible to launch odin inside ubuntu using wine, but due to lack of drivers phone is pretty much undetectable, anyway the virtual machine idea is good and as far as I know about VirtualBox and VMware this might actually work

Using Wine maybe a bad idea for Odin and yes you are right without Kies (Samsung drivers) phone will not get detected. And we can't depend on Wine for 100% on all Windows applications. Some won't work correctly. And as you're aware of Virtualization technology, it might be a better plan.
is there another way to flash android phone using ubuntu? Because i am using ubuntu now

You have other options; Maybe you can run Windows with Odin and Kies in a Virtual Box. And there's also a lot of Windows XP portables to boot with a usb stick without change your OS ;D
I'm sorry for the bad english.

Latest source for heimdall includes heimdall-frontend which is a GUI on top of the heimdall command line. I was able to build it from source very easily reading instructions from README files. Since I can't post links yet search for "Heimdall 1.3.2 Source (Github Repository)".
UPDATE: Avoid heimdall 1.3.2 as I ran into open issue 32 "Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence, DATAFS upload failed" when flush samsung galaxy s2".
Instead use 1.3.1.
Important things to remember or else you could brick your device:
heimdall command line and heimdall-frontend are from same release or there will likely be compatibility issues.
Careful not to overwrite bootloader unless you know what you are doing
Only use heimdall firmware packages that are compatible with your device

Heimdall is the answer
Hiemdall isn't compatible with our SGM as I heard so I don't try it to not brick my phone.
The only way is to modify the ROM and make it CWM flashable.. how? I don't know! If you know please teach me.

I was trying to root my phone using step 2 of "[GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!!" and ran into heimdall's issue 32 ""Failed to confirm end of file transfer sequence, DATAFS upload failed" when flush samsung galaxy s2". Reverted to 1.3.1 and all was well. So you may want to avoid 1.3.2.

First, I just discovered "[GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!!" on this forum (threadid =1311081). That was incredibly valuable. I used step 2c using Heimdall. If Heimdall is not an option for your device then would either 2a or 2b work for you (it wont if you are on UCKK6). If they wont either then all I can think of is to do 2c like me but instead of heimdall use ODIN using a friend's Windows machine or running a windows virtual machine like VirtualBox, VmWare etc. with USB support. Note that I have not tried this option and cannot vouch that it works. Perhaps someone else can? Best of luck and please click Thanks button below my post if you found this useful.

[Q] New to streak!

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am new to the streak 7 but i have used roms and rooted before.
So far i have enabled fastboot and rooted the phone, went off almost without a hitch. . : /
What i would like to do is install a rom that would let me get ride of all the bloatware and maybe give me customization.
I was looking into the ics 4 but for some reason i cant understand the nvflash concept, normally i cant just do this stuff without asking... but i guess since ive been on pain meds all week im just a little slow.
Anyone have any advice on what i should do next to get to the point i would like?
Thanks!
Do you have sim card? If you don't, you should try ics!

There is nothing to figure out.... You put the Streak in APX, mode.... You connect it to the computer. I you manually install the drivers. You double click the. bat file you already have on your PC..... It takes 5 minutes

I guess i should just not even do this, I have it in safe mode, which i guess is APX mode?
It says all the driver are installed. and i dont have a .bat file i have an executable file that came with the nvflash base package.
So when im updating the nvflash drivers, do i have to move the files to the system32 folder or do i just update them using the manual update through the device manager?
When you connect device in apx mode, PC should say, that they havent drivers, and you should manually change drivers from folder in ics zip. Connect you device and try reinstall drivers
is apx mode the same as safe mode?

Download the latest SDK from Google. You need newer ADB and Fastboot files in order to work with a 5.1.1 bootloader.
Make sure all the files are in the same folder as well. I never trusted using environment variables.

Yeah, I'm a weird guy. Had a soft brick once on a M8 because my work laptop decided to forget about a set variable midway through flashing.
No doubt it was a quirk, I'm just playing it 110% safe by not relying on them for flashing.

It doesn't really make sense.. If fastboot or adb are running, "losing" an environment variable would make no difference. ...and if they were lost between commands,.the next command simply wouldn't run so couldn't cause a brick either.
I've been rooting and and flashing for over 5 years and an IT technician for over 10 years and I've never heard or imagined of any such thing. Whatever caused your brick, I can say with say with confidence that it was nothing to do with environment variables.. Windows runs on environment variables. In fact when you go to run and type "cmd", that only works because of environment variables. There is no way to avoid them.
none

Well Blu and Amazon have released that there are backdoors the firmware. They claim that the latest versions have closed those backdoors. So probably should not remain on 6.1.
But if you root now then use the Roms from the XDA forum you can also close those backdoors. And be ad free.
I know there are many pages to get caught up on. But if you browse at least the titles of the various threads, it is good place to start.
Now I do not know of a mac specific guide. The process of rooting uses sp flash tool. Then fastboot.
Many others have done it fine with mac, but did not make guides. I assume it is not that different.

also if your on 6.1 you dont need to do it with the dirtycow method.
