Just wanted to drop in and tell everyone about the sd card I bought.

Speed is awesome. I can restore an image from recovery almost 5x faster than the stock card. My hero seems twice as fast just doing day to day stuff. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner. I had no idea that the system depends so much on the sd card.
FYI, stock card is class 2 (read 2MB/s). This is class 10 (10MB/s). 8GB is platy for me and you can't beat $17.99 free shipping. I'm getting one more for my wife's intercept.
BTW, incase the listing is gone in the future this was:
Patriot LX (Class 10) 8GB MicroSDHC Flash Memory Card
ASIN: B003SX0OU2
Item model number: PSF4GMCSDHC10
Tested and worked on CDMA HERO under CM6 nightly 87
Nice find, I paid $23 for a 8 gig class 6 just last week. You are right about the speed improvement, I was running a 4 gig class 4 before and I can tell the difference!

This card is amazing! I finally found out why it took so long for the phone to start ringing when the call was coming through. Guess what... I had the ringtone downloaded on the damn stock slow-ass class 2 sd card which took forever to load the sound LOL.
I wonder how many people are having lag issues with their hero not realizing this sd card limit problem.
Hmm I'm debating getting a Class 10 16GB but I might just disable A2SD since I'm pretty sure that the internal memory is faster than a class 2 microSD card.

Yeah, for sure it is. But I don't run apps2sd even on this new class 10 card simply because cm6 has plenty of room for me and it's froyo 2.2 so I can move each app to sd individually. However, ringtones are downloaded to sd (wherever you get them from) and when selected as a ringtone in the main system they are not moved to memory anywhere. They still are executed from the sd card.
Just bought this card from newegg. It was a bit more money but I couldn't find it listed on eBay.
Sent from my Hero running Froyo. Boom.

The higher the class, the higher the speed.
The Hero only recognizes up to class 6. If you buy a class 10 sd, it will work, but you'll have the same speeds as a class6.

Really? Good thing I bought an 8gb class 6 instead of a class 10 last night. Haha.. I can't wait though, I get it in about three more days, and paid only $15 with free shipping from ebay. That's good enough for me.

When I'm hooked up to the PC and writing to the card it barely gets over 4 mega bytes/s but when I read from it it caps out at exactly 10 mega bytes/s.
I'm not sure where you are getting your info from but all I'm saying this is what's happening as far as I can tell.
Hmmm... I just thought about that. Between the PC and the hero it should read whatever the class is but not necessarily between the SD and hero itself. I'll have to download the app to test sd speed and see.
Tried 'sd card speed tester' from the market?

Cool I just got a 8GB class 6 with Deca's stable #6 kernel and its so fast
Well... it just died on me!!! Along with all my data on it.
The thing will not respond at all. I might as well be putting my fingernail in the slot. I tried other cards, they mount just fine. I also tried my laptop and still no go.
Patriot memory sucks
Now that I was forced to switch back to the old card I'm getting awesome battery on my phone. I think that card may have been going bad for a while and maybe the phone never went to sleep because it kept trying to mount it. I know the few days before if died it kept dismounting it and I had to rensert it to mount.
Just an observation that battery life could be also related to your card.

What class is it? I just tried finding that information out but couldn't find the specs on it. It it's a class 6 then I would be very tempted to get this. If it's only a class 2 then I will pass.

Something has been bothering me for a while now though about a 32 GB class 6. I dont know if we will see one (at least at a "reasonable" price ANY time soon). Think about it. 32 GB is the absolute max the microsd can handle. Device manufacturers are looking into new storage options which should be implemented next year. I just don't know how big of a demand or even incentive there is to release an upgrade to a dying storage medium.
I'm really just looking for more storage space on my phone so that I can put all of my mp3's and vids on there without filling up my card. Class 6 would be nice. Honestly I've never even seen a class 6 micro sd card.

It makes a huge difference when you're transferring files to and from your PC if you have the class 6, much faster file transfer.
Yeah thats why I said I THINK! honestly I been with my 16GB class 2 for a really long time now and did some research on the technology of the 32GB micro SD card, I read somewhere that its not possible for the moment (or something like that when I read it) how ever IF THERE IS A 32GB class 6 or EVEN a class 4 I will Definitely BUY IT!
Samsung 32GB Micro SD
If I am not mistaken, I saw a Samsung 32 GB class 6 online for about $600.00. And I too have read that 32GB is the upper limit for microSD.
I have been using a SanDisk 32GB card for about 1 month now. It says "Class 4" but the transfer rate using WMDC seems a bit slower than it should be (when moving large files). I have since moved files using standard MicroSD reader and have no problem. The [email protected] can handle 32GB. Card is still a bit pricey (you can get 2 x 16 for a lot less).
I have heard RiDATA Lightning Series 16GB is freakin fast it is class 6 for 50 bucks looks like a really good deal.
i just bought one from ebay for $34.99 the seller has 100% feedback and people that bought them says they are good. so ill see if the knockoff works lol. its covered on the ebay buyer protection

Sorry Bud, but that's SD-XC, not HC.
It's new tech, doesn't count. :3
First, 2TB is the limit for Micro SDHX I belive, and I don't think any PDAs or phones are set up to use them yet, next generation.
I recently got a Class 2 Sandisk SDHC 32gb at Verizon for $100. It was supposed to be $150 if you didn't have one of their phones (Droid X I belive) but they didn't ask any questions and gave it to me for the cheaper price. Works fine, plenty fast for video etc.
One note, I did try to buy a cheap '32gb SDHC' off thEbay and what I got looked just like the one I got from Verizon but was marked with Class 4. It would format with 32gb but when I tried to load data onto it after about 8-16gb or so it started getting errors. I figure it was one that was tinkered with internally to make it look like 32gb but actually was just a 8gb or 16gb in reality. I got suckered for $25 so beware.
Marc
I ended up picking up a 16gb class 4 Kingston one for 40 bucks that actually works really well and my phone doesn't lag anymore accessing files on my SD card like Music...
I bought a Patriot 4GB class 10th micro SD card for my Hero. I was transfering music to my phone and I noticed it was only going a little above 2 MB/s. I thought that was a little slow so I ran CrystalMark benchmark and got the same result write speed.
To make sure it wasn't my phone, I put the class 10 card in my girlfriends completely stock hero and got the
same exact results. The stock card gets more than double write speed.
Now, taking these cards out of the hero and using a adapter and inserting it into my laptop, results are much better. The class 10 card is outperforming the stock card by nearly double.
Anyone know what's going on?

I'm not sure what my stock SD card is but people claim the stock card is class 2, though mines performs like a class 6.
if the Hero only supports up to class 6, does that mean a class 10 will perform slower than a 6.
I rooted and installed nfinite's .7 ROM on my girlfriends hero. Our phones are now identical except for the SD card. While transferring music back to her phone, I noticed it was going even slower than mines, around 1.85 MB/s. Looks like it's the ROM causing the speed issue, hmm.

I purchased a 16 Gig Transcend a while back and had improved performance over the stock card immediately, especially with load time of music files. Took about 10 secs. with the stock card and now is loading in under 4 seconds. And yes, I've already done all the tweaks for improved load time on the stock card with no improvement. The stock card is crap, so any other card would be an improvement but I can only vouch for the Transcend but will post results with the ADATA when I get it.

Unfortunately I just got to it today. I'm sure the sale is over but for the record, the response time is much better than the stock sd. Load time for Sense music player is 3 seconds as opposed to the 11 seconds of the stock sd. As I stated in the OP, the Transcend sd is pretty good also and I would say ithey are both decent cards and are an improvement over the stock sd card. So if you can find either at a decent price, I'd say it's worth it. I plan on keeping one as a backup and one to install Android on.

I'm sure there are ways programs that can give you the read/write speeds but I can only tell you from experience....stock card= sucks, new cards = good.
Saw this card on Newegg today. Pretty cheap for a Class 10 16GB card and reviewers state it meets Class 10 standards, and that it appears to be a rebranded Samsung card, so it is a quality product.
Android only supports Class 6, meaning this card should be plenty quick, and will utilize full Class 10 potential during file transfers over USB.

Wintec 16gb CL10
Just got the Wintec 16gb CL10 from Newegg, put it in my Sprint Hero to format and as soon as it finish saying setting SD card the screen locked up. removed battery/ installed and saw installed apps icons were gone in its places gear icon. Installed original 8gb and app icons were back but apps came up with FC. removed each app and reinstalled and they work fine now. I'm afraid to put the 16gb back in, it seems fine in my laptop. I have no idea whats wrong!
I got one of these around Christmas. Formatted, partitioned and transferred my stuff. I thought all was well until I had to restore a nandroid and it bootlooped. I put my old 8G Sandisk back in and haven't tried again. So my experience was it worked about a week. I guess it's a write/read issue. I had trouble with recovery mounting the card to even see my backups. I had read reviews of spotty quality and I guess I had the bad luck of the draw.
hmmm ok then I guess i'll pass on this one. I want to get one that'll last so i can transfer it to a new phone when i upgrade.
on htc website, it says microSD 2.0 compatable, & i know some phones can only support so much extra storage, ie: some say microSD up to 16gb, so maybe the hero doesnt support high capasity cards.
anybody got a conformation on how big a microsd card we can go, that wont cause issues.
i was looking @ this card in the OP, but now im double thinking.

I bought the wintech 16 gig card back in january and 15 days later I woke up and my phone said the sd card was not formatted. Both windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 only saw the card as 1 gig but neither could format it nor create new partition tables. I lost all the data but luckily had a semi recent backup on my computer. --Adam
I think the most important question, is what brand are you using? The class ratings might mean something if they were enforced, but the sad fact is that they are not, which leads to lots of cheap, crappy cards out there.
I have a Kingston class 4 that barely makes class 2 speeds, and an 8GB Sandisk class 2 that falls between class 6 and 10 (in real world speed). If you get a GOOD card, running Froyo/GB from it will be smooth as butter (Running the posted custom Froyo on my Sandisk, and it is as fast as the stock ROM on the eMMC).
I believe the class number corresponds to the cards base transfer rate. For example class 4 is 4 mb/s, where class 10 is 10mb/s. Depending on the brand and how much you spend, class 10s can go even faster than 10mb/s. This is a significant difference, but I don't know how much it will actually affect the real performance of NF and HC on SD.
I just ordered a class 10 to see this for myself because I originally tried it on a class 4 card as well, and wasn't happy with it. I will post again when I try it.

Among the many cards I've tried I had the 16GB version of that (class 4) card. The Sandisk 16GB (class 4) I got bested the Patriot and oddly some others that were supposed to be Class 10. It was the only way I got Froyo and especially HoneyComb to run reasonably.
I just downloaded the app System Benchmark on my Evo and tested the Class 4 Sandisk in there:
Write: 7.1 MB/s
Read: 10.6 MB/s
Not too shabby at all, I think when I get home this baby is going in the NC.

It should run it amazingly. My SD gets 7.4 write, and 12.x read, and Froyo on it runs as smooth as elcair does. It has really become my daily driver.
On my Kingston class 6 I get 9mb/s write, on my Sandisk class 4 I get 3mb/s
I just installed System Benchmark from AnTutu also to have a dollars to dollars comparison and on my KingMax 4GB Class-10 in the NC running HC I get 9.9MB/s write and 18.5MB/s read... running the complete test takes forever though it seems...

Well, at least that's the expected outcome considering the Kingston class is higher. The sandisk class 4 card I have gives me ~ 5-6 Mb. If it's true that the NC can't benefit from more than 6 Mb then I won't ever need anything better.
I found with both my Kingston 4GB class 4 microSD and Kingmax 8GB class 10 microSD that the nook runs laggy. When I run Froyo off of the internal memory, it runs fabulously.
For reference, I got about 6MB/s on my Kingston Class 4 and 11MB/s on my Kingmax class 10. This was on my PC of course, I didn't test the speeds from then nook, but only noticed it lag and crash more often (compared with internal memory).
