[Q] Sasktel I9000m - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question regarding all of these updates for the I9000. I currently am running JH2 and saw that there have been upgrades available on kies, yet it tells me there are no upgrades for my device when I connect my phone.
I read on the forum that I have to do something in the registry of kies so that my phone is recognized as I9000 not I9000m. How do I go about doing this? Or is there some way for me to get these updates via kies?
I hope this makes sense.

no no, there are 2 different kind of updates
Kies updates for Kies
and phone update in Kies
the updates you see in Kies are for Kies itself not for the phone
if you run the firmware upgrade inside Kies
and tells you there is a new firmware available for your phone, then that is a real phone update, if you don't see a message, then it has not been released yet

So when everyone is upgrading to JI6 via kies mini, is there currently no update for a i9000m JH2? Are the I9000 and I9000m different phones? And can the I9000m only receive certain firmware upgrades? As compared to all the upgrades available for the I9000?

the ones floating around are not official releases
those are leaked test firmwares
you can install those if you want, but they are not official
you only need a registry hack to use Kies to flash it to JM1/JM2 (official)
or you can use Odin like the rest to install the non official releases
JH2 seems to work better than the ones mentioned above specially if you are in America

Yes they are different phones, hence the different name. JH2 is the most recent firmware for the I9000M. You can put other firmwares on it using Odin, but it is not recommended as there have been a lot of issues with the internal SD cards on the I9000M and many believe they may be related.

Thank you so much for your quick reply, this helps a lot with all these updates floating around. When Froyo does come out will that be available for the I9000M or will that be a waiting game? Either way I am pleased with my phone despite some problems with GPS. Here goes the waiting game.

Well as you have noticed the official 2.2 seems to be just around the corner.
it should show up any day on Kies

About flashing

So i wanted to know if i flash via Odin, can i still update to Froyo via Kies normally and can i get official firmware releases in the future?
if you can do Odin, might as well stay with Odin
but yes, you can use Kies to flash Froyo when it comes out officially
Just need to do the registry hack
Sorry i ment that can i upgrade to the official Froyo when it comes out. Not those leaked ones. My bad.
yes, even for the official one you'll probably have to do the KIES registry hack for it to load the official Froyo, if you happen to be in any other non official ROM
Ok thanks mate!
If i flash to JF3 and upgrade from JF3 to JM2 via Kies officially. Will that work?
So to explain this clearly. I want to flash JF3, but i want to know can i upgrade in Kies for JM2 after that and can i upgrade to Froyo in the future without any registry editing and stuff.
JM2 is a legit ROM from Kies, so yes, you should get 2.2 when it comes out from Kies without registry change

[Q] Is there a way to find out what the stock firmware was of my SGS?

Hi there guys.
I can't remember whether my SGS had the JF3 firmware out of the box or not. And, since both JM7 and JM8 are not cutting it for me, I'd like to revert back to my phone's stock firmware. Is there a way to find out what the firmware "out of the box" used to be?
Thanks in advance.
europe = JM2 latest stock
Thank you for your reply.
So JM2 is basically the latest non-beta firmware version?
Also, should I use the "usual" method to flash JM2 and should I get the files at samfirmware?
Please bear with me as I am very new to this flashing stuff.
samfirmware is fast and easy
or you can do it via Kies but it's a challenge dealing with Kies as most people can tell you

Kies would not update me past JM1. I flashed an old firmware to my phone and as expected Kies prompted me for a firmware update. Only to JM1 though and after JM1 was installed it said my phone was up to date, idk if this is the same for everyone else just letting you know ...
Is it even possible to "downgrade" by using Kies? Cause I can't seem to get it to work, even with all of the registry hacks described in several threads, here on XDA.
Guess I'll have to use Odin after all...

I have encountered the same in the past. Not sure on which productcode JM2's available.

[Q] Will Kies let me update my phone to official Froyo?

Hi,
Firstly, apologies if this question has already been answered. I tried using the search facility but didn't find the answer I needed.
I purchased my SGS from Malaysia. It came loaded with JG4 and the Singtel (Singapore) branding. I decided to flash the firmware to JP3 in order to get rid of the Singtel apps and the splash screen.
I have a few questions:
1. Will Kies still allow me to update to official Froyo even though I manually flashed to JP3? I'm aware that the official firmware isn't available yet for most of Asia, but want to make sure that when it does become available, Kies will let me update.
2. If I flash an unofficial European firmware onto my device, will I then be able to upgrade via Kies to the official European firmware? How does Kies determine which update is ideal for your phone? Is it based on the current firmware? Or do they check your serial number or something to determine where the phone was sold and only recommend that regions firmware? Do I need to downgrade to 2.1 in order for the Kies update to recognise that I need an update?
I know that if I really wanted to I could update things manually via Odin, but I would now prefer to stick to the official method of updating.
Thanks.
Similar difficulties
Hey,
I am having similar problems. I got my galaxy s from tmobile in uk but I upgraded my galaxy s to froyo 2.2 using Odin3. Problem is at that time I didn't have enough knowledge. The phone got upgraded to 2.2 properly but now a lot of functions like Swype don't work on it and also the Internet crashes quite oftenly also it is a little slow. I came to xda developers also in hopes to find out how to re flash galaxy s to 2.1 or fix my problems.
My advice for you is however, don't rush into anything like I did.
Regarding Swype, mine was disabled after I flashed the firmware too. Try holding down the button in the bottom left of the messaging screen to turn it back on.
Bump.
Can anybody shed some light on either question?
Is the official 2.2 update available yet via Kies?
I updated out of the box (got phone yesterday - unlocked but has some Vodafone branding in ROM) but still no 2.2 update.
Thanks
Phil

Well that's sorta the problem for me... I don't even know whether Kies will give me the option for updating to the official 2.2 firmware if it already sees that I have an unofficial 2.2 firmware installed already.
Having done some research (thanks google) I know Kies does not provide Froyo for Vodafone branded phones yet. However it appears to be due very soon.
The easiest way to get Froyo I think is to install ROM manager, then download a custom Froyo, stick it on your internal SD and flash it from recovery mode. Doc Froyo comes highly recommended
Probably not. I remember reading somewhere that kies will give you a message saying firmware not recognised.

[Q] i9000m Latest Firmware

I'm sorry if this is a repost, but getting a grasp on what's going on on these boards can get complicated. Especially with the easy going i9000m.
I'm just trying to figure out if there's an official 2.2 release out there that I'm not seeing through Kies, or if the current firmware that Bell/Samsung are supporting is still JH2.
Reading the Samsung Mobile Canada Facebook page shows about a month ago they released JL2 in response to the previous 2.2 update, which I believe was JK3?
Anyway, what's the latest official firmware and if it's JH2, what's the safest/most common unofficial firmware being flashed right now? Would the one that just hit T-Mobile work for our phones?
Please and thank you
The official 2.2 Bell firmware is JL2, which should be available in Kies.
No, the one that hit T-Mobile is a completely different firmware and shouldn't be flashed on our phones.
I'd recommend upgrading to JL2 as soon as possible, because it apparently fixes the issue many, many users have had regarding the internal SD card dying.
To upgrade to JL2, read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853950
To read more about the internal SD card dying, go to a thread I created: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10470498&postcount=4

[Q] Galaxy S I9000 Official Roms

Hi guys, i'm looking for the official rom for Samsung galaxy S I9000, my carriere is Bell Canada, I don't really care what version it is I'm gonna update it to the latest version using Kies.
You can download from samfirmware
I have been looking for a rom and a tutorial for 4 hour, tried 2 but kies keep telling me that my phone can`t b upgraded by kies. If anyone has a working tutorial For SGS I9000 (Bell CA) please tell me

Before any rom upgrade (out of kies) you must be operator free... Well, that's what I understood when I first flashed my SGS1.
You shouldn't stick with stock roms (my opinion), custom roms, in my experience ( which it's not much ahah) are always better because it's made by costumers that want their phone with their full power without restritions. Well, at first I was like you, a bit apreensive, now I have Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.3) and I dont want to go back! Its awsome. But you should read a bit more about everything.
Try reinstall kies, maybe there is a new version or your phone is in the latest firmware...

I think better you try to use Odin rather than using Kies to flash the rom.it more user friendly and straight forward.
The only official gingerbread version for Bell Canada is UGKG3 (2.3.3) that came out in the summer of 2011.
If Kies says your phone can't be updated, you must have quite an old version of Android installed.
Well i am with ICS 4.0.3 but i really wanted to go back with official roms to get update via kies to try something with Bell TV, but that just optional, i tried some roms, but kies was not detecting em. so i went back to ICS (but it's really unstable imo)

Since you've already gone to ICS, you may as well just download the UGKG3 ROM and flash that with Odin and forget about Kies.
If you want Kies to get you to a Bell ROM, you'd have to go back to Bell's Froyo release (again using Odin) and then let Kies update that to UGKG3.
