When I first got my Galaxy S I was so impressed with the google maps as a sat nav I stopped using my TomTom.
Now after trying various different firmwares (currently JPM) my google maps only works when I am connected to a wi-fi connection.
When I am out in my car I get a GPS lock and can see 11 satellites and lock onto between 8-10 satellites but when on the move my google maps looks like the image below.

}
If I do a search for some ware I get the screen below and it just keeps on searching and never finds a location I put in where as it did before I updated my firmware.
Below is a screen shot of GPS Status showing how many satellites I am seeing and locked onto.
Is there a way to get this working correctly again? I also have CoPilot installed and that works as it should but I still prefer google maps.
Thanks in advance.
Paul.
I see that u dont have data turn on. no data, no google map as it need to download the map.
Where does it show this and how do I turn it on?
Paul.
Am I the only one with this problem then! I have never had a 3G connection as I am on a pay as you go sim and it's never been enabled yet before updating my firmware google maps worked flawlessly.
Paul.
google maps does not store maps locally, it retrieves them as required. Hence, a data connection (either 3G or WIFI) is required. This has always been the case.
The app does store some map tiles in cache, thats why some of the tiles are still visible.

Thnx for the bar code
Has anyone spotted anything outstanding yet? I've not really seen anything I would think would win.
Yesterday I reviewed Drive AR Navigation on the ADC 2 app. Basically it is an augmented reality based Sat Nav system, but use the live video feed from your camera instead of maps. Overlays the insturctions on top of the live video feed. Uses the compass as well as gps. Contains voice directions obviously. Failry awesome. But useless at night as the video feed from my HTC Hero camera is rubbish at night.
i tried ADC2 for a week or so and have been having fun.
but yesterday, when I downloaded an app "YourKey", it crashed my phone and non-stop prompted me "Force Close" and it still did the same even after I rebooted the phone. The home won't load up because it constantly crashed and prompted the "Force Close" so it means I can't even uninstall the crashing App.
At the end i had to hard reset my phone and redid everything which took me hours.
Somehow I believe some of these apps have not been tested thoroughly.
Be careful. Take your own risk. I gave up on that.
I installed the latest Google Maps app from the market. when I go to Menu->More "catch settings" is missing. Is Hero capable of caching maps for off-line use?
"Rather than having a static set of maps when installed, Maps will automatically start caching the areas you visit the most when your device is plugged in and connected to WiFi (e.g., the nightly charge)." You can't manually control caching, but it's an important first step toward an offline Google Maps.

from http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2010/12/google-maps-5-for-android-3d-maps-and.html
I have seen it on youtube(couldn't find the video now) that Maps 5.0 has a menu for "Catche Settings". Go to this link you will see it.
Do you guys have this menu on your Hero's?

Offline map caching
The caching is not going to be done while you are using maps. Rather, it will wait until you have your device plugged in and on Wi-Fi to download your personalized map data. If you go to Menu > More > Cache Settings, you can see the current cache size, along with the option to clear it. Also, you can toggle Prefetch on Mobile to let the phone use cellular data to pull maps if Wi-Fi is not available. Google has committed to constantly improving the algorithm that generates your most used areas. We're going to be interested to see how this works out.

It doesn't support the vector rendering and therefore I don't think it supports the offline caching.

Hey everyone!! I'm here with a new app that solves an issue I'm sure that every one of you have had. AutoGPS rectifies having to turn GPS on and off whenever you use Maps or Navigation. You never have to worry about your GPS again, helping you save time and battery.
AutoGPS - Google Play Store
-----------------------------------------------------
Play Store Description:
AutoGPS manages the Location Settings of your device to switch to High Accuracy(GPS) whenever Google Maps needs it. Never be prompted again to change your Location Mode again. Never worry about wasting your battery to your GPS always being on, AutoGPS will take care of it for you.
☆Only works with Google Maps
☆Requires Secures Settings (Uses Root)
☆Requires Notification Listener
Secure Settings: http://goo.gl/NCoJJ
The System+ Module must be enabled for Secure Settings to work.
Notification Listener: http://goo.gl/ljTj2p
It must be turned on in the Security Settings of your device, under "Notification Access".
Important:
AutoGPS doesn't really ask for many permissions to manage the GPS for Maps.
Lock Screen Permissions:
Allows the device to know that you're not actually navigating anywhere and instead just have the screen off.
Retrieve Running Apps Permissions:
Allows the app to know when you're running Google Maps.
Run at Startup Permissions:
This allows the app to do its magic stuff without having to run it manually every time.
Prevent From Sleeping Permissions:
Keep Android running while Google Maps is active to manage GPS.

Hey there!
So a couple days ago I noticed Google Maps just not working at all on my phone. When I enter an address as a destination, it will show me the path I'm supposed to take, but then the blue arrow that shoes my location just doesn't move, regardless of whether or not I am moving.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling updates, tried different GPS services (Waze also didn't work), I've tried messing with the Location settings
Can anyone help?

Are you on stock ROM or custom ROM?
Try two things:
1) Download TopNTP from the Play store. Use default installation instructions. Reboot. Tell me if you get a GPS lock.
TopNTP

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I use GPS every day with CM 12.1, with Waze. But I use that TopNTP GPS helper...
2) Re-flash stock radio image via fastboot.
_______
If neither of those help, and you are on a custom ROM, then
3) you may have to temporarily re-install stock ROM, get a GPS lock -- then re-install your custom ROM.
If you are on stock ROM already, then my only suggestions are #1 and #2.
Your first fix did the trick! Thank you!
My Chinese car head-unit is no longer able to get GPS signal. I have tries all the available maps application and it doesn't work! I also tried a lot of GPS Fix type tools/apps, nothing worked.
At the top of the toolbar it shows the location icon but somehow the location just doesn't work.

Hey did you find a fix for this I have the exact same issue dm me if you did please
Had the same problem in mine. It first started as an intermittent problem, where I'd loose the fix randomly while driving. Later the problem became permanent.
It turned out the SMA socket for the GPS antenna inside the unit was not soldered properly. Once I replaced it the GPS worked perfectly.
Another not an MTCB or MTCD unit
Check the technical part, antenna, and all wires. If everything is in order, follow the advice indicated above, install the old version of the application and prevent its updates.
