[Q] Modem only flash... Possible? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a Galaxy S from Bell (Canada), and using the fido (yes, unlocked)... Yesterday, I installed the official release of Froyo ROM for the middle eastern version to be able to read/write in Arabic.
After restoring the backups using Titanium, the phone became kinda slow. The main issue now is the signal; in addition, I'm not been able to receive calls. Once someone calls me, the signal disappear. Not to mention the "R" symbol and the absence of HBDSA data support.
Bottom line, is there any way to flash the modem ONLY with the Canadian version one instead of finding another ROM and flash the whole thing?

HTC Dream losing 3G?

I'm wondering if anyone else ever came across this weird issue. I am on the Rogers network with a HTC Dream. I've tryed several ROMs and none make a difference. The issue is, I lose 3G connection and my SIM card gets corrupted. I have a LG GW620 and I used it for a long time and this never happened. What happens is I totally lose 3g capability and I can't get it on any other phone unless I get another SIM card activated. I've had this happen to me twice now and it ONLY happens when I used my HTC Dream for couple weeks it seems. Could this be due to that my phone is using roms or is my phone just mangled? I'm just thinking of smashing this phone with a hammer as it is useless to me if my 3G connection is gone.
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks
IIf you currently have radio 3.22.26.17, please find and download the 3.22.20.17 radio image and flash via fastboot 'fastboot flash radio-3.22.20.17.img'
The image is on bcrooks server.
Please note the imei-sv is 3 in 3.22.26.17 but 2 in 3.22.20.17, this means if you are a rogers/Fido customer with a rogers branded dream you will be flagged by rogers for not having the e911 rom.. and thus they will disable your data if you have not filled the wavier. To reactive a call to the call center is usually required (preferably on a phone other than the cell in question)
Note the radio has nothing to do with the e911 issue, as the bug was in android not the radio.. so if you have signed the wavier or are not a rogers customer feel free to use 3.22.20.17.. of if preferred downgrade to 2.x via fastboot
(its unknown if the lattest 2.x or the older 3.x provides better signal on the Rogers network .. but the newer 3.x has problems in every rom.. including the official one HTC/rogers forced on everyone, sad since the bug was just in the Java code of one file on the phone in /system.. nothing to do with the radio)
Alright just let me get this straight.
So they are flagging me because of my phone, or radio? I am a Rogers Customer, have been since 2004 I believe. How would I go about getting data to not dissapear on my phone again? I had just bought this phone used and rooted it and put on a custom OS. I'm not exactly sure which radio I have at the moment, but if i update to 3.22.20.17 would that fix the issue if I got rogers to re-activate my data?
What radio do you have now
I believe this one is on there.
Radio Image update 2.22.23.02
So if I update to Radio 3.22.26.17 via Fastboot and call the support line to re-activate my data or w.e that will work?
Not quite that simple your current rom wont work with the 3.x radio as is..
I recommend one of two things..
1) goto http://rogers.com/htcwaiver and sign it.. then call rogers saying you signed the waiver and want data back.. if it fails tell them that..
2) if this is a rogers branded dream and I assume it is unroot to the stock e911 patched rogers rom and start from scratch on android 1.5 .. this is not optimal and I highly recommend option 1.. and you still may need to call after to get data back http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...Branded_EBI1_Dreams#Returning_to_Stock_Rogers
Huge low blow in Rogers case. Plus I have to call them cause they say my number does not exist when I put it in that Waiver. What a joke in my opinion.
Thanks for the information though. Much appreciated.

Get rid of Cognition first and try the ClockworkMod version of the Rogers 2.2 official update.
Make sure you do a wipe data/factory reset in ClockworkMod after flashing the official ROM.
With Cognition you are running I897UCKB1 baseband/modem software (for AT&T). The Rogers baseband/modem software is I896UXJL1.
Either flash to stock Rogers ROM or replace the baseband/modem software on your Cognition install with I896UXJL1. Report back after you've tried that. You also won't be able to return the phone to Rogers for a replacement with Cognition running on it! You'll ultimately have to flash back to the Rogers stock ROM for warranty purposes.
I am on att and i tried the official att 2.2 and it was crap...is rogers suppose to be better?

Sorry for some reason I assumed you were with Rogers.
Did you have reception issues with the AT&T 2.2 ROM? Did you do a clean flash of it? Please elaborate the "it was crap" statement...
I did a flash back to stock and master clear...att official was slow and made me have lots of force closes...best i can remember the service wasnt as bad though...can i flash a diferent modem?
I flashed ji6 and it seems better now...

[Q] Network Problems, donation for solution.

Majorly stressing! My girlfriend just got a N1 used from amazon.
Will not connect to a mobile network, our first attempt was orange, which prompted us to install updates and we installed them (before we installed we tested calls, they didn't work)
Then when updated to 2.3 I tried my giff gaff sim, this will not work, and I have tried the giffgaffAPN app from the market (DL'd through wifi)
What doesn't work - mobile data 2G/3G
What does/has worked - Wifi and the updates downloaded without being connected to wifi! but nothing else will work!
Any help? I donate via paypal!
We are in the UK, it is possible that it could be a foreign locked version of the phone (i heard all uk Vodafone versions are unlocked). Is there a way I could test for this?
My guess you have a carrier modded version so can you do me a favor go to settings -> about phone -> build number tell me what it says. It should say either GRI40 or GRJ22 (that is if your on gingerbread, if your on froyo then it should be frf91, frg33, frg83 or frg83D) if it something that is any longueur than that then your on a carrier modded ROM so you need to use the passimg method to get back to stock (link in my sig).
it says grj22
I would give it a shot anyway because passimg solves allot of problems the only down side is that it wipes data.
are calls not working or is it just the 3g? If the former it could be a barred (stolen/lost) handset and no amount of flashing etc. will fix it.
data works, calls/texts dont!
Go to the phone dialer.
Type *#*#info#*#*
Phone Information
Menu Button
Select Radio Band
Euro Band
Maybe this helps?

[Q] Emergency Calls Only after CM install?

I've spent the last few days trying to figure this out without any luck. I have GT-S5830D (Canadian Koodo version) on stock firmware TLKI4, unlocked with SpeakOut sim (which operates on Rogers network).
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: S5830DTLKI4
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-perf-CL568978 [email protected] #1
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DTLKI4
PDA: S5830DTLKI4
PHONE: S5830DTLKI4
CSC: S5830DTLSKI4
In this stock firmware, I have no issues at all. Everything works fine, can place calls, WIFI, GPS, data all works. If I flash a new rom to the phone, I can see the networks still show up with signal strength showing okay, but the phone will not place calls. Just says Emergency Calls Only.
I've been reading about everything I can about this phone, and I just can't figure out what the problem is. I have flashed the modem with DDKQ7 and I was able to again place calls, however with this modem firmware, the connection was very unstable and would drop frequently.
Is there an issue with directly updating the stock rom to CM7 or CM9 that would cause problems with this baseband? I was under the impression that baseband wasn't really important. Interestingly enough, I have another phone that is the same make and model and is not experiencing this problem. I feel there must be something I am missing, if anyone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it.
Thank you.
I have a feeling that I may be the only person that has experienced this issue. Continuing to search the internet for other answers, I've discovered that the baseband is the cause of this issue, but I still don't quite understands how it relates. My other phone is on the stock firmware (TLKI4) and is running CM7 without issue, on the same network even.
Do the APN settings have effect on voice calls too? Or is it strictly for data?
Also, I read a post on here that sounded like there was a limit to how many times you can perform a complete flash with Odin? Is that true? I'd love to keep experimenting, but each time to roll back the stock firmware, I need to use Odin and I'm hesitant due to the thought that will eventually brick the phone.
Thanks again.
tried to flash cm7 again??
Yes. I have installed cm-7.2.0-cooper.zip as well as some of the nightly's and still only get emergency calls only. I have another phone, exactly the same setup, and it works without issue. I even tryed GalaxyICS-latest and the same problem.
Now I did install a different modem firmware, and performed the upgrade and I don't have the issue anymore, however I have other issues, dropped service, 3g doesn't work properly, wifi and mobile data won't switch, gps is has extremely long lock time if it locks at all.
Does anyone here have the D version of this phone from Koodo? Which modem firmwares are you using? Anyone specifically using the phone on SpeakOut? Any hints would be helpful because I'm completely at a loss, will just have to keep it stock until I can figure it out.
I had the same problem as you, don't worry though because there is a solution. The Koodo Samsung Galaxy Ace only receives a signal when using the original Koodo baseband. (Basebands have to do with wireless signal, sometimes referred to as modems.) The good thing for you is that you can use any ROM or firmware you like, as long as after installing it you flash the original Koodo baseband (S5830DTLKI4) using Odin. I found a download link for the baseband in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1381595
After downloading, (I'm assuming you know how to use Odin, if not you can find a guide easily) open Odin, and in the "Phone" section browse to the file and select it. (You will have to extract the ZIP) Then press start and wait until it is finished downloading and that should do the trick. If you need any more help post back because I know what a pain it is to try and get this particular phone rooted and install a custom ROM.
ALSO MAKE SURE TO BACKUP IN CLOCKWORK MANAGER BEFORE FLASHING THIS
cause you never know what can happen.
If I flash CM7, it still shows my baseband being the same. It doesn't appear to have been changed. So what I need to do is flash CM7 and then just reflash the baseband with Odin and it should work? Even though the baseband shows the same? I'll give it a shot and let you know how it works out, but does anyone know why this would be required, to have to reflash the baseband even though it was never changed?
Is your current baseband S5830DTLKI4? Because in my experience that's the only way I could get service unless I was on the Koodo stock ROM.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA
Yes, that is the firmware that I'm on. That firmware was installed with the stock rom that the phone came with and I have not changed it. Although I have changed it before, it fixed the issue with getting 'emergency calls only' in CM7 but the service was so flaky it wasn't worth keeping as a solution. If I leave the firmware from stock DTLKI4 and flash CM7 over it, I end up getting stuck with emergency calls only problem.
Is the current official CM7 not compatible with DTLKI4 firmware? Could that be the problem I'm having? I'm still really confused why this isn't working, but I will try to install CM7 again, and then use Odin to flash the DTLKI4 on top to see if the install is causing any issue with it. It doesn't really make sense.
Alright, interestingly enough, I just flashed it again and all is working as expected. I've flashed this phone about 10 times, using the same files and it would not work.
This time however, what I did differently is not root the phone. I've been using the universal_gb_root_v20.zip to root the phone previously, but I found that rooting before installing CM is waste of time as root is enabled in the CM7 rom already.
Also, when I flashed the stock rom with Odin, it usually used selected the KDO CSC automatically, last time I flashed it came up with TLS CSC and had the Telus branding. I don't know if that made any difference. All I know is that it worked and I am able to make calls and use data without any problems.
Thank you Dynamic_Apple, although your recommendation was not required, it did give me the motivation to try again and that was enough to get it working. I've never had so much difficulty modding a phone in my life, especially a model that I have messed with before.
Glad I was able to help, I had just as much trouble getting mine modded too, it makes me jealous of all the generic Galaxy Ace owners, but it's good to know that you can actually get past Koodo's sneaky limitations.
