[Q] stuck rooted HELP! Nexus One - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was using Universal Androot on stock 2.2. The 2.2.1 OTA came through and after ignoring it for a few days, I accidently installed it. Now I can't unroot with Universal Androot, keeps saying "Failed! You still have the power, my lord.." Now things like AdFree say unable to get root access, and the SuperOneClick won't get past "waiting for device..."
Any way to fix this without completely wiping the phone?

Yes. Searching the forums for the various ways how to root 2.2.1

The problem is that it already says that I am rooted. But any app that requires root says that I'm not. I think it might have to do with being rooted with androot while the update happened. I want to try to avoid factory resetting the phone if possible.

No research ... no gain.

it may say it but you dont.. why it says it cause it still sees the su in xbin and superuser in app.. but if you read the 2.2.1 update it did remove everything with root.. which sucks.. i have instructions on how to root 2.2.1 with rage..
Code:
adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/

I have done both the rageagainstthecage to see how hard it would be but if you follow step by step, you'd be fine. I have also upgraded to 2.2.1 and tried SOC and that works as well. After I used SOC, I reverted back to 2.2 and loaded Rod's Rom again. I was curious

What is SOC and how did you get back to 2.2?

Z4root no sup user app??

Hello everyone, I have been tring to root my phone for two day. I tried the z4root and it gets to rebooting and just stops, it finally reboots when I press the home button but it never installs super user app. I went to unlocker and tried androot, nothing. At the end of superone-click short fuse it failed the test for su permissions but installed superuser but it wouldnt do anything. Please help me root this phone. I have an Alltel phone. Kernel ver. 2.6.29-bc0d2cff firmware ver. 2.1-update 1 baseband ver. 2.42.01.04.23 if you need more info just pm me.
Thanks
I have never used these one click methods, but, if it actually roots it, just download super user from the market? Or just use one of the rooting methods found in the Development section (yes, you will have to read a short list of instructions).
I used z4 and it got stuck like you said, i clicked home and for me superuser was there.
but since not try rebooting and if its not there then, download android terminal emulator.. type su then press enter. if you see a # then youre rooted, so go just download superuser from the market and you should be solid
Try super one click. It installs superuser when it installs root files.

Links to the necessary files are listed at the bottom.
Remember, I am not at fault if you brick your phone, now, proceed.
Connect your phone in charge only mode to install the LG Bootstrapper and drivers, or grab the LG Universal Drivers.
Change your USB Mode to Internet Connection
Go into Settings/Applications/Development and ensure USB Debugging is turned on
If all goes according to plan, you should see the ADB Ladybug icon in your notification bar
I updated the Rootzwiki page with the same info found below.
Busybox actually comes installed by LG on the Revo, how awesome is that??
Download the rageagainstthecage binary
Download the SU binary
Move these files to the same directory your adb.exe is in.
Code:
The > and # characters below illustrate the prompt
you should have, if you have the $ when you go into adb shell,
exit out and type 'adb usb' then go back into adb shell and
you should see the #
Open Command prompt (either use the Windows Key+R and type cmd or start/run, then type cmd)
32-bit users: >cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools
64-bit users: >cd c:\program files (x86)\android\android-sdk\platform-tools
Or >cd (whatever directory adb is in)
>adb devices (verifies you are connected)
>adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/temp/rage
(if the above command fails due to read-only, type 'adb usb' then 'adb root' to validate root status, then 'adb devices' again to verify connection)
>adb push su /data/local/temp/su
>adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/temp/rage
>adb shell ./data/local/temp/rage
>adb shell (If this gives you a $ prompt instead of a # prompt, type 'su', if that fails, 'exit', 'adb usb' like above.)
#mount -o remount,rw -t ext3 /dev/mmcblk0p12 /system
#busybox cp /data/local/temp/su /system/bin/su
#chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
Verify the file is in place w/correct permissions
#cd /system/bin
#ls -l *su
After the ls command you should see the following returned by the system:
-rwsr-sr-x root root 26248 2011-05-29 01:09 su
At this point, you may way to remove the files you put in /data/local/temp (optional):
#rm /data/local/temp/su
#rm /data/local/temp/rage
continue with commands
#reboot
Download and install SuperUser from the Market

Just a note for some. The rageagainstthecage bin file may be detected as a virus/trojan. It is not. You may want to disable your antivirus before downloading the .bin file.
I run avira on my desktop and it caught the file as a virus everytime I downloaded it and then deleted it. Avast on my laptop however did not.
Root is simple if you follow the instructions. You need to make sure that adb recognizes your device. Takes 5 minutes to complete, took me longer to install adb again and update it.

Hey guys, either using S1C or ADB Commands, have we found out if it's possible to unroot this as long as you Nand Backup the stock rom then unroot from there yet? Just because I got this phone as a filler/4g unl. lock and got buyback on it from best buy so I could buy a dual/quad later on when they come out .

Oh ya I know, I just always keep a stock one, on the Inc if you factory reset from an AOSP rom, you'd bootloop, so you had to make sure you were on a Sense 1.0 or stock rom(from my experience), so I was just making sure it was no big deal to go back.
Any idea when we will have cw on this?

If you have to return your device, simply remove the superuser app, after you unfreeze anything you may have frozen then factory reset. They honestly will never know it was rooted. The only way now that you can really tell is the super user app from market.
Just so everyone knows. SuperOneClick can root and unroot this phone ok.

No No, I was saying we need to praise Koush's good work so he will make one faster .
And Stetsonaw, any idea if I root through ADB, can I unroot with S1C, since it uses the same idea.
S1C for whatever reason will not run(tried three computers, a XP, Vista, and Win7 lol), it keeps freezing at the same spot, everytime.
Should be able to, since S1C does what the ADB method does... or you could just delete the 'su' file out of /system/bin and /system/xbin (if it's there) to unroot.
EDIT: I couldn't get S1C to open on my desktop, and my laptop, which would open the program, would bluescreen when i connected the phone, so i had no choice but to do it the ADB way.

Hmmm, ya now my computer for whatever reason won't open up ADB through command. This is getting irritating lol. Should be nice and simple, but it just won't go through. If I downloaded the SDK Manager like 4 months ago, it shouldn't matter, correct?
make sure you change directory to wherever your adb.exe is located... as in:
Code:
cd C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools

Possible New Rooting Method!

Well, this is interesting.
On my Revo4g, all I did was enable USB debugging in internet only mode, and i'm faced with this:
Code:
c:\tools\android\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell
# busybox whoami
busybox whoami
whoami: unknown uid 0
#
Looks like there's no need for rageagainstthecage, or any exploits. ADB is run as superuser already! (although for some reason ro.secure is set, and it seems to be ignored, so it possibly may be a bug)
EDIT: Nope, verified. Toggle ADB debugging on and off, and you're root!
This is most definitely not what LG intended, but hey- it works!
Still no signs of fastboot without accidentally erasing recovery or something. Looks like it's left in as emergency-only.
If you're not rooted, try this:
Open ADB shell
Your command prompt should be "$"
Run
Code:
kill `busybox pidof adbd`
Re-run ADB shell, your command prompt should change to "#"
Congrats! You're root.. now you can push "su" and whatnot.
That was strangely easy...

Well, if you've got ADB installed, then no you don't need superoneclick, but it's main claim to fame is that it's got all of the tools bundled together.
Stick with superoneclick until I get an easy method put together...
LOL... That's sweet!
Like I mentioned elsewhere... LG wants Verizon to think all is locked down and such but secretly behind its back it is giving us free candy. Like when grandpa and grandma hide money in your room before leaving...
They left in everything needed, we only had to put the pieces together.
Bravo LG bravo... now can we have the source code for this device for 2.2 and 2.3..
Now i'm for sure rooting today, as i already have adb installed. Epic.
So i ran ADB Shell and it automatically gave me "#". I then proceeded to "kill 'busybox pidof adbd' " and it said it did it. Still had "#". I don't seem to have root though. I can't delete bingsearch.apk, can't do anything in setcpu.
When i installed super user from the market, it did say there was an update, so it asked if i wanted to install it. I said yes, and it said an error occurred but it put a zip on my sd card to update the binary and that i need to reboot into recovery and install it.
Any ideas? I don't have cwm yet so i can't exactly do that. Here's how the whole thing went down:
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\platform-tools>adb shell
*daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
*daemon started successfully *
# kill 'busybox pidof adbd'
kill 'busybox pidof adbd'
[1] Terminated kill "busybox pidof adbd"
#
Nevermind, i just went with super one click and i have root now.

setCPU will require superuser.apk and a working su. Did you mount the system partition r/w by hand before trying to delete bing? Using this method, you'd have to mount r/w, then push su, etc.
Ah, my bad. I'm semi new to adb. Thanks for pointing that out.
I had the super user app from the market. On root explorer it didn't give me a Mount r/w button, so i knew i wasn't rooted.
The problem with this rooting method is that it's incomplete.
My method gives you entry to a root shell-- it does not "root" your device.
A "rooted" device requires a file in /system/bin/ called "su", which allows normal Android apps to access root functionality on the device.
The method I detail allows you to manually remount /system as r/w and push the required file to the proper location without requiring an exploit.
Once I have some time free from working on the deodex'd rom, and porting CM7, I will make a super-super easy one click root application for windows/linux.
Until then, this thread is mostly for technical reference for devs, and something interesting that I found

[Q] Rooting TELUS Optimus Black

Anyone figured out how to do it? I've tried following the guides with no success (gingerbreak). Model is P970g and software is 10a. Country code is TLS.
Anyone have a Telus OB and been able to root it? How did you do it?
I've rooted a couple of them, both 10a on Telus, one of them was pretty easy using z4root. Another one wouldn't work with z4root, latest superoneclick, gingerbreak or manually using adb shell to gingerbreak, rageaggainstthecage & psneuter. I did finally get the stubborn one to root wither an older superoneclick; version 1.6.5. Attached it below as it doesn't seem available in CLShortFuse's thread anymore.

I tried both z4 and the superoneclick you suggested to no avail.
Do you think it's safe to try flashing another vulnerable rom? 10b or 10c? I'm worried the basebands may be different and the phone will have no voice/data connection.
Running out of ideas.
Attempted to root another one, same model, same version and none of the previous methods worked, was able to root this one as well using a combination of SOC 2.1.1 and the attached ADB Shell.
1. Download and run SuperOneClick 2.1.1, choose psneuter and click Shell Root
2. It should get stuck on step #4, run task manager, end superoneclick and terminate any adb.exe processes. (You should have Shell Root now)
3. Extract ADB.zip and open a command prompt to where you extracted it.
4. Enter the following commands
Code:
adb push su /tmp/
adb push Superuser.apk /tmp/
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 /system
cat /tmp/su > /system/bin/su
cat /tmp/superuser.apk > /system/app/Superuser.apk
chown root.root /system/bin/su
chmod 06755 /system/bin/su
chown root.root /system/app/Superuser.apk
chmod 0644 /system/app/Superuser.apk
reboot
The permissions on /system/bin/su didn't stick the first time for me, and the phone rebooted a couple times, but eventually it all went through. To verify permissions on su, type "adb shell", then "ls -l /system/bin/su". The permission should read -rwsr-sr-x, if it doesn't repeat the shell root process and type
Code:
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 /system
chmod 06755 /system/bin/su
ls -l /system/bin/su
Ok, i've figured out what the problem is. As soon as the adb process from SOC is shut down, the phone soft reboots and I lose temporary root. I've tried the psneuter exploit in the same adb command shell, but it hangs just like SOC. I've tried to be "quick" and get the commands in before the reboot, but it isn't possible.
Suggestions on how I may bypass that? Otherwise i'll wait for the official 2.3 update in september and try again then.
One of the phones I tried it on, did the same thing, ended the adb process and phone would reboot, pushed a file, phone would reboot, set permissions, phone would reboot. Occasionally the phone would appear to hang, buttons flash at the bottom for awhile, phone becomes unresponsive. Just wait a minute or 2 and it should return to normal. I also tried creating a script to do all of the above before the device had time to reboot and it didn't help.
Persistence was the key.
Did you try that ? If following the instructions don't work for you, I let you know how it works for me.

One click root after update: "We have root, but couldn't push busybox. Not sure why!"

One click root after update: "We have root, but couldn't push busybox. Not sure why!"
I just updated .890 which seemed to go fine with no errors (unfroze all bloat, but did not unroot), but I lost root, as expected.. but when I use Pete's one-click root tool (latest version), it gets to step 3 and gives me the error about not being able to push busybox...!? It says I "have root", but none of my apps recognize it.. I've pulled the battery, rebooted and retried like 10 times... still can't get it to re-root. I've made sure Debugging and Unknown Sources is enabled and tried in Charge Mode and Mass Storage mode... Am I going to have to stock flash this thing and re-update & re-root?
I THINK I have some type of root.. maybe... because Root Explorer will let me mount the System directory as R/W and I can TRY to manipulate files, but if I delete something (like su), it appears to delete successfully, but the file comes back if I refresh the directory.. but I also noticed when I go into the System directory, Root Explorer claims I only have 1MB of free space out of 318.00MB... how did that happen? If I try to run Superuser.apk, it force closes on me.
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated...
there's an app on the android market that will push busybox if you have root. I'd look into that
edit: have you attempted to run the one-click root again? and if that doesn't work you can try to use the adb method if you're comfortable with it. And make sure that all of your drivers and everything are up-to-date
I have done battery pulls and like a dozen+ re-tries at the 1-click root, always get the same error.. I have been into the ADB shell to try and figure this out and I see the ADB Shell starts out by giving me a # prompt... that means writable/root, right? Any instructions on what I have to do from there?
I will look into that push busybox app, thanks.
http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/index.php/Motorola_Droid_3
This is where all the info about the adb and one-click stuff. The tough part about the adb method is manually pushing su to the (i think) system/xbin folder. Then i just used the app on the marketplace to push busybox. But there's a download link for both of those on the website
Thanks for the links. I think a problem with my ADB is when I reboot it (step 3), I no longer have a # prompt.. it goes back to the $ prompt... the only way I can seem to get the # prompt in ADB is when I use Pete's temporary ADB root... but once I reboot, that goes away. When I try to do step 4, rm /data/local/12m, it says it's a directory and it's not empty and it won't remove it. :\
How do I normally make ADB give me that # prompt so I can write/edit? or am I totally off-base here?..
*edit* I am going to try and do Pete's temp ADB root again and just try steps 18+ and see if that gets me anywhere...

After temp ADB root, steps 18 and beyond should do it. You may want to check /system/bin and /system/xbin to remove the old su binaries before pushing the new one. Some folks have one in each location for some reason. Put it in xbin, but if it doesn't work, /system/bin will. Superuser wouldn't recognize xbin for me so I moved it to /system/bin and i'm good since.
Anyone have a thought on the xbin not always working? I think this is the 3rd topic i've seen with this issue, not including myself.

OK, I got root back! I used steps 18+ for "ADB Method" (after using Pete's temp ADB root) and essentially replaced SU and Superuser.apk, CHMOD'd it rebooted and I had root! Thanks guys!!
