Well this is a Video Tutorial teaching those who are new to modding there phones or have been reluctant to try Odin, or for those who NEED to use Odin since they soft bricked there phones or flashed something wrong. For whatever reason, this will teach you how to get your phone into download mode and how to flash your Vibrant back to original stock state.

Cool video, definitely help new people learn how to use Odin.
one upped me huh?
my next post - will include a video on how to take over the world! MUUUUHAAHAHA
I Kid, but good job, maybe my inbox will slow down now.
Your last link is down. Thanks for the video, I am about to use Odin for the first time and this video has helped give me some confidence.
Thanks
is this in the sticky yet? it has 2 be its helpful to the noobs
Not to be a buzz kill or anything, because this was needed... And is very useful, but why isn't it posted in general and just linked in the bible?
This isn't about development.. Its a tutorial about a windows program..
It would get just as many views through there and be just as helpful and not clutter the dev forum..

I have only used Odin 1 time to flash JI2, have been very lucky not to soft brick with all the times i have flashed my vibrant. But I wish this was around before I had to use it, thanks for the video. Its not hard to use, but visually watching it always makes me feel better before I do anything for the first time.
Thank you sir
This is exactly what i was looking for.
I agree. If the mod could bump it that would be great. I plan on coming out with more videos in the future.
anyone have recommendations on how to do this if you dont have access to a windows computer?
oh geeez. just be thankful
Terriffic!
Thank you! Much mopre comforatble doing ot for the first time!
It does not work with me. I do everything right and all it shows is:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
Nothing more.
Do I need to have my sim card inside the phone or it does not matter?
Hmm, not sure what the problem is, could be a few things. Are you sure you have the correct PIT file? Make sure what you have downloaded is not corrupted at all. You can also try using a different usb port.
Very nice video .... I am a noob and this helped me a lot....
Thanks guys
Maybe the reason is because of the downgrade mode. Should I see something when the phone is in this mode because when I hold the vol up and power it just show the samsung logo nothing more.
I just followed all of these directions to the T and everything went fine, no errors in Odin or anything, and now my phone is stuck with a black screen and the buttons lit up. When I reboot the phone it goes through all of the startup screens just fine: Vibrant, T-Mobile w/ sound, and Galaxy S, then just blank screen.
I tried doing the Odin thing a few times and I'm stuck here - is my phone seriously bricked?
EDIT: I can reboot into Clockwork and stock recovery just fine.
Current Settings - I am rooted, I have ROM Manager, Super User Permissions, Root Explorer and a Custom Rom (Fusion).
Attempts - I have downloaded ODIN, install all the necessary drivers, have booted up Parallels and have have been able to mount my phone and view files on Parallels. I have opened up ODIN and it has recognized my phone when it is ON.
Dilemma - I have gone through the steps given to us by the nice ODIN video tutorial. However, once I access download mode on my phone my Parallels gives me a pop up that says it is unable to connect the device to the USB. I have tried this over and over about 30x, still I cannot get it to recognize the phone while in download mode.
*So, can someone provide me with a solution? Either via MAC or Parallels? I'd like to get my phone back original settings soon, thanks.
Probably a noob question but you can flash any rom with this program?

If it is an Odin ROM then yes, not the update.zip types.

Well, I guess I messed my SGS up.
A short overview of what happened:
I tried to replace framework-res.apk on the official Froyo (rooted using OneClickRoot method) with one I modified. After deleting the original file I was unable to move the new one into its place as, despite me deleting a few ringtones, it kept stating that not enough space was available. So I decided to go into recovery mode, hoping I'd be able to fix this (I had a backup of the file on /sdcard/) I wanted via adb's shell from there. Well, su doesn't work in recovery mode ("Permission denied") and neither does adb remount ("remount failed: No such file or directory").
This is where the real trouble starts:
When I launch Odin3 (1.30), the phone seems to be recognised - if a yellow field with a COM port listed and "<ID:0/009> Added!!" in the message area is any indication. After selecting my PIT and PDA file and clicking Start, this is what Odin tells me:
<ID:0/009> Odin v.3 engine (ID:9)..
<ID:0/009> File analysis..
<ID:0/009> SetupConnection..
Aaaand that's it. I have tried both with the 512 and 803 PIT and even tried flashing JPK onto it to no avail, it just stays stuck at SetupConnection.
I also wiped everything on the phone as well just to make sure nothing is interfering. Thanks to me messing with the framework-res.apk, adb can't be used while the phone is "running" Android (with a black screen and I suppose constant FC everywhere because of the vibrations).
I'm pretty much out of ideas right now after having tried for hours to revive my baby, but maybe one of you magicians out there can help me find something I haven't thought of yet?
Remove the battery and put i back.
Go to download mode.
Try again.
Sometimes you need to reinstall the drivers.
If you have more usb stuff locked up. Remove them. Odin is a little baby

New member and somewhat stupid for trying to do this:
Long story short I attempted to throw gingerbread 2.3.X on the phone and now its stuck in either download mode, recovery mode, or if i just turn it on it comes up and says "GALAXY S GT-I9000 Samsung" The last thing that was successful was putting the SpeedMod Kernel on it.
In recovery mode it says "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0 SpeedMod ULFK" on top and bottom.
The phone started out with factory settings.
When i try and use the ODIN 3 and try to do the Mast Clear it says :
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> Master Clear Started.....
and then stays like that indefinately...
Same thing with hitting "start"
Please let me know how to fix this, I know there are some really brilliant individuals on this forum and it would be greatly appreciated.
search for odin, download it, follow the steps and flash back to stock. you'll be fine especially since you can get into download mode.
edit: gah you already have odin. do you have one click or the one where u have to put the pit and tar files?
the same advice applies though, find the stock files, and go into download mode, then plug it in and flash back to stock.
i think master clear only works when the phone is on and you have usb debugging enabled.
Ive got ODIN 1.7 and ODIN3. I can get them to both recognize the phone but when I try and hit "start" with v1.7 it ust sits there forever. and Im not able to get ODIN3 to do anything either.
Any way you could provide a more step by step solution?
If you're having problems with ODIN, something that seemed to work for me was to remove my SIM card.
Try removing it and see if you have any luck.
I dont have anything in the phone, no sim and no external.
Just left it alone for a bit and came back and turned the comp back on and everything worked for ODIN. Thanks for the help fellas
Hello... just got a Galaxy S new and I think I have fully bricked it.
It was on 2.2 stock and I installed Darkys v10.1 extreme rom on it following the steps in this guide..
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/i...-darkyrom-gingerbread-jvh-noob-friendly.3080/
I first installed
- Ficeto_JVH_I9000_Odin:
- DarkyROM_v10.1:
and installed the PIT and PDA.
I decided that I didn't like Darkys and tried to install Cyanogenmod 7 on it..
my friend said I needed to install a PIT first, then install a JPY rom afterwards.
I used Odin 1.3 and selected this pit "s1_odin_20100512"
and I think I pressed Re-Partition as previously in the guide that was what they did..
Auto reboot and F. Reset time were both ticked
This was the log
<ID:0/003> File analysis..
<ID:0/003> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/003> Initialzation..
<ID:0/003> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/003> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!

<ID:0/003> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/003> Removed!!
<ID:0/003> Completed..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)
How can I save my new baby?!!!
When I mean bricked, I don't think it turns on at all...... doesn't light up or enter recovery.
Most ironic is, I bricked it relatively easily when people said it's virtually unbrickable.
!!!!!!!!
You may never flash just a pit file!!!
You only use it when you flash a 3file rom.
That's the same for repartition.
If you can get it in download mode, everything is fine.
Else your screwed...
A sgs is virtually unbrickable if you had flashed it correctly.
When you don't know how to flash always follow a tut!!!

I never realised you could just use a .pit without the rest.
The .pit file isn't "installed" it is a file which tells the system how to wipe and then repartition the memory in your phone. Essentially you wiped the phone without installing anything on it after that. I am not sure if it wipes the bootloaders as well (at the very least it has partially wiped them if recovery is not working)
If you can get download mode to work, then you should be alright. If it doesn't work, a jig may or may not help. If you can not get download mode to work, then you have no other recourse than to send it back for repairs. They will need to replace the erased bootloaders if this is the case.
If on the other hand you do manage to get it to work, read very carefully the process that is actually involved in flashing firmwares with odin/heimdall. Yes it is very hard to permanently brick your phone if you know what you are doing. Hell in most cases even if you don't know what you're doing it's hard to permanently brick your phone. You went ahead and did one of the few things that is a danger area though. In general though, you should not repartition (ie use the .pit file) unless necessary (although repartitioning wont really do anything bad it's completely unneeded in most cases) and don't flash boot-loaders unless necessary. NEVER repartition without flashing a rom with it.

Thanks for your long and detailed explanation of what I have exactly done..
I had kind of guessed by now of what I have done.. which is very unfortunate as like you said, "I never realised you could just use a .pit without the rest. ".
Such a dangerous thing, I wouldn't have expected the software to allow me to do that
Instead of making a jig with resistors, I have read that you can cut a micro usb cable instead??
Would you be able to direct me to other resources or information on how to make one?
If a jig doesn't work, how much money am I looking at for someone to fix it?
Thank you very much,
Kind regards

USB JIG may be your only hope then.
but before you do that, take battery out for 5 mins. Then hold the 3 button combo for DOWNLOAD mode, THEN put the battery back in, STILL holding the 3 button combo.
and also, does the phone do anything when plugged in ?? no charging indicator or lights, vibrations ???

I will try taking the battery out and putting it back in with the three buttons together.
Also, no light or vibration when plugged in USB..
If the jig fails, any idea of the ball park for the cost for it to be repaired?
if the jig fails, send it off to samsung a blame it on a failed KIES update, act dumb and hope for the best, chances are they wont charge

first of all CHILL OUT !! dont panic or you could make the same mistake.
Download this http://sourceforge.net/projects/teamhacksung/files/galaxys/GT-I9000_FROYO_FULL_PDA.tar/download
DO NOT use pit and DO NOT select re-partition
let me know the outcome, if the above firmware dont fix it, we need to get you a 3 file firmware THEN and only THEN do we add PIT and REPARTITION

Thanks for the encouraging words..
I'm downloading it now, 370mb?!
After download, do I use Odin 1.3 or 1.7 to flash the TAR and ONLY THE TAR?
BTW I'm with Windows 7 64 bit, I've seen guides saying 1.7 may not work perfectly... however It worked fine for me with installying Darkys rom..
i use 1.7 too, also running win 7 64 bit. no problems for me.
the firmware is a FULL FROYO including all dbdata's bootloaders, kernel the full monty
only insert the .tar file in the PDA section of odin.
it may not fix you completely, but it will restore most of the corruption, however we may need a 3 file firmware with PIT to fix the file system.
but we will cross that bridge when we need to

At the moment, I'm getting a "USB Device Not Recognized" notice with plugging it in..
right ok........
do you have kies installed on your PC ?? if you do uninstall it, and then re install it, this will re-install the drivers,
if you dont have kies, try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Finally, when you are about to flash using odin MAKE SURE KIES IS **NOT** RUNNING, EVEN IN THE ICON TRAY.

Nah I don't have kies.... I installed the drivers itself instead. hmm hah.
I've flashed my phone plenty of times, but this time I accidentally installed something that screwed it up bad. My phone at first was either stuck on the at&t logo, or if plugged in would be frozen on the battery pre-loader. I needed to get it in download mode to try to re-flash it, but I couldn't even do that. After a million trys I finally bought a usb jig which helped me get into download mode, but now my computer does not recognize my phone as a device when I run ADB DEVICES under the android sdk.
I'm assuing since adb devices comes up with nothing under list of devices attached is why odin3 isn't working. When I try to run it all I get is various messages such as the following and my phone either gets stuck on the downloading screen, or I get a blue screen.
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..

Thanks. Yes I did read that thread and that's what helped me get ODIN to see my phone, but where I'm confused is ODIN is showing 0:[COM4], but when I run ADB DEVICES in CMD PROMPT it doesn't list my IMEI number for a device being shown. Also, ODIN constantly gets stuck on different steps and either my screen will turn either all green, blue, purple, etc, or my screen just turns black. I'm closer than I was the other day since I bought the USB jig, but I am stuck at a point now where I can't tell if there is hope or not!

The "adb devices" command won't show ur device if u r in Download Mode. And if Odin is seeing ur phone (com port lit up), then it still sounds like u need to reboot ur computer, right click and run Odin as administrator, connect the usb end or ur cable to the a usb port on the back of the desktop computer or 1st usb port on laptop, then connect micro usb end to ur phone. If that doesn't work try a differnent port. If that doesn't work try a different cable (sometimes the one u think is good because u just used it the other day...will be bad). And in ur situation right now, I would not be flashing something with Bootloaders in it.
Thanks. Didn't know that about adb devices. I've tried various ports and installing and uninstalling drivers, but anytime Odin starts to work it freezes. I had just went from serpendity to cm7 and then I accidentally loaded an old flash from February so I don't know what was on the phone when it bricked. What tools exactly should I be using and get it from there?

Which Odin and Firmware are u trying to use. And do you have the .pit file, because since u went to CM7, u will need to include the .pit file and Repartition.
Here is the .pit file below. Take it out of the .zip and select PIT in Odin and navigate to where u put it on ur PC and select it. Then the repartition box should be automatically checked. Include this .pit file with ur other Stock firmware u r trying to flash (gingerbread i presume. This is a .pit that came with the kf1 i897 gb firmware).
Which Serendipity were u running. That will let u know what Bootloaders u have, either Gingerbread or not.
View attachment Kepler_odin_new_part_JE3_S1JE4.zip
I was literally in the same boat the past few days. The only thing that saw and properly flashed was this. (search it)
"SGH-i897-UCKH3-One-Click"
I had serpendity 6.4 on it and the android version was 2.2 and the cm7 was 2.3.7. I think I'm using odin 1.81 I believe; I honestly don't know which one I should be using and thanks for the .pit file! But as far as stock rom or whatever it may be where do I get that? I just don't know what the correct files I need with which Odin so it works right!
Since u were on froyo, check out the link in my sig to the i897uckb1.
I am out away from my laptop right now, but in that thread should be everything u need, but u need a froyo .pit file not the one i had attached. There may be one attached in that kb1 thread. U definately need to repartition when u flash though. And that should get u straightened out.

I've had a similar problem, though never needed a jig. For me, it was definitely the USB port I was using. I was able to get it on maybe the fourth attempt on the bad port.
Try using the drivers and one click from this thread to take you back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I'd also suggest using a different machine. The rear Ports on a desktop are best. I read why one time but don't ask me to remember it right now.
Ok it now was successful with using ODIN, but after the restart it goes to the Android system recovery screen and says:
update media, please wait
E: Can't mount /dev/block/stl10
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
copy default media content failed.
What firmware did u flash and did u repartition ??
Well I got past that, but there appears to be no rom or anything installed because there is nothing on my SD card and I'm stuck on the clockworkMod Recovery screen. Anyway to get my update.zip file to the sdcard somehow?
Now it's on the CWM-based Recovery screen (cyanogenmod) and I don't know what to do now to actually get to the phone. I don't know what I am missing or where to get it.
Answer my previous post and maybe I can help. And in what direction are u wanting to go as far as flashing firmware is concerned ?
Used I897UCKB1-homeBinary.tar and yes I repartitioned.
I wanted to try to use what I started using before I bricked my phone. I wanted to use cyanogenmod 7.1 that had gingerbread 2.3.7 on it. Right now it boots up showing the cyanogenmod logo but never goes past the cwm-based recovery v5.0.2.6 screen.
Just select to install the CM7 again through the CWM Recovery. You may have to format system, wipe data/factory reset in cwm first. Then after it installs and goes back into cwm recovery, just select reboot.
You mean just run the update.zip file again? If that's what you meant I did that and wiped/formatted like you said, but it still just boots back into cwm. Obviously I am doing something wrong.
Reinstall cyanogenmod 7.1 and after it installs it may boot back into recovery. If it does just select the reboot system now.
Hi everyone!
I need help!!!! Please!!!
i've bought a new working i9000 yesterday - thats the good part.
I wanted to install cwm recovery ,so I entered this site from google:
(this site doesnt le me publish outside sites)
from here comes the bad part!!! the file RUINED my phone (after it happened to me I read the reviews there and understood it is a bad file!!)
the situation now:
what ever you do ,you get a multicoloured lines screen...also in download mode ,but odin gives you added sign,BUt cant pass the "setup connection" :crying:
I have tried two computers 1 with win7 and one with xp...
is my phone gone??????:crying::crying::crying::crying:

Also, could you tell us more about what you did? Which CWM recovery did you flash? How do you know that it was "bad" by other than breaking your phone?

I'd say you should try to reflash a stock rom onto your phone. I understand that Odin always stops at "Setup connection" for you, and for that I would recommend the following topic: LINK:
3) Problem:- Odin gets Stuck on <ID:0/008> Set PIT file. or <ID:0/003> SetupConnection.. or <ID:0/007> Removed!
Answer: When using Odin to Flash, Open task manager and close these : Kies.exe , KiesTrayAgent.exe, and KiesPDLR.exe
IF your downloaded File (.tar, .zip, .md5 .rar ) is corrupted, Odin could get stuck too, so download from another source, if it happens repeatedly.
Good luck, man. :good:
