[Q] User Agent ID string under froyo - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any clever soul figure out how to change this on the stock browser under the official froyo? About:debug does not let you change this like you could on eclair...

would like to know this also, can't find anything about how to get it on galaxy s

Same problem here with galaxy s and JP6 firmware. What's the use of flash if you can't view desktop websites

For Froyo 2.2 only
1. download file attached
2. close any running Internet Browser on your SGS
3. use Root Explorer, change to r/w mode, then:
- copy and paste (overwrite) the downloaded file to /system/app
- delete Browser.odex in /system/app
4. reboot
5. "about:debug" and u'll find the user agent
**Edit: You should ask in Q/A thread instead

Try Dolphin HD and Desktop Toggles addon
I prefer it over the stock browser, although it does have some performance issues from time to time.

Did the steps above but still no UA ?

Is that browser apk the newest or did you pull it from that old jpk browser fix thread? Is it from jpa, jpm, or jpa?

My fault, system was mounted as read only. Now it works

How do you mount system as not read only?Guessing you need root, what is the simplest way to achieve this?

I rooted my phone with One Click Lagfix from RyanZA. There is an option to root your device for android 2.1 but also work for froyo you have to force the install. The apk will download file to the root of your sdcard.
All you have to do is restart the phone into recovery modus and choose the option "aply update.zip" and youre done.

OCLF doesn't seem to work on jpm, but figure I'll try this when it does. Anyway, where does this browser file come from?

WTF?
i do step by step of "pcboyy" and now my browser is comletly gone!!!
what is this?

im looking for help buddy im new to this...i obviously read how to install it and failed
if ur talking about adb I dont have a windows computer can't use adb even if I did I dont know how to use it to type in the code plus read the rest of my post I tried the other method and it didn't work...
anybody else?
[edit]
Look below for the correct way
I did this mod on mine and I am using Cognition 2.2beta 5 with 2e kernel.
The proper way to do this is, Get Root Explorer from the market. Make a backup copy of your framework-res.apk and save it to your PC in case you have a problem. Click over the link for the battery mod you want and download it directly to your phone. Then go to Root Explorer and find the download, rename it to framework-res.apk and copy and paste it over your current framework-res.apk. the framework will be located in the system folder. You will find the battery mods for cognition on a thread for stock lockscreen and battery mods in the development section of the forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=799511 only use the battery mods from this thread for Cognition ROM you are running.

Connect to your computer, make sure you're in Debugging mode, and mount your SD card to copy files from your computer to your phone. Select which version of Fightspits you like, re-name it "framework-res.apk" and copy it to your phone. Make sure to unmount your SD card from your computer
Using Root Explorer (VERY IMPORTANT!! Make sure the grey bar at the top says Mount R/O, if it says Mount R/W, click it) go to location /system/framework and find the file "framework-res.apk" touch it and hold until Options comes up, and select "Copy". I paste it to my External SD card in a folder I create named "Backup".
Then go back to the location that you saved your renamed Fightspit apk, copy it and paste it to /system/framework. Say yes to overwrite the existing file.
Reboot and your done
Got it?

@Riannon224; and @mcord11758
please re-read the OP's and the 1st line of my post,
You are correct IF you are running froyo and a Cog version prior to 6. However the OP and my post are not talking about Cog prior to beta 6. The update.zip does not work with Cog beta5 becasue Cog beta5 uses the recovery 3e and not the 2e; and the 3e recovery does not accept update's that are not correctly signed. Cog Beta 6 and Cog 7 uses the modified JI6 kernel and uses the 2e recovery which does accept unsigned update.zip's
My method does not require spending any money; and since the upate.zip does work on Cog6, use Rom Manager to backup your phone.
Your method will also work, and in the case of the OP so will mine. I have used Beta6 and 7 and my method works perfectly. I will say that your method it more details and the real proper way to do this, however to make it easy....
[edit] If you are running Cog 5 or Froyo and want to enable using update.zip files, flash the kernel here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226 it reactivates the 2e recovery, and is the same kerenl that is used in Cog 6 and 7

I have the kernel flashed with 2e recovery on my phone, I did it prior to Cognition beta 6 so I didn't need to flash beta 6 because I did the fix manually a few days before Designgears updated. This is from the mod thread, read it for yourself.

JI6 Mods
Changelog
Update 10/12:
Added Version Z / Guage indicator.
Added original android.policy.odex from JI6 for those who don't like Cog using mine as default.
Update 10/5 Again:
Added Circle battery indicators (valid for all 2.2 JI6)
Update 10/5:
Added Deodexed version to work with Cognition 2.2 Beta 2
v1 -> v2:
Fixed bug with text/missed calls allowing puzzle lock to return.
What are these?
Stock Lock
-Modifies your lock screen to re-enable the stock android lock screen.
-This INCLUDES the "disable menu button" fix (so you can't unlock with the menu button).
-This will REMOVE the current glass/puzzle lock screen, to restore glass, put your old android.policy.odex back!
Circle Battery Indicators
-This changes the battery indicator to a different theme.
-See Fightspit's thread for screenshots: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724778
-Your background will default to the Cognition background since that's which APK I started from. (just change it)
Make backups of your current file(s)!
How to install:
1. Download the file for the mod you want.
2. Back up your current file!!! (cp /system/framework/<file> /sdcard/<file>.bak)
3. Replace your existing file /system/framework/<file>. REMEMBER SU if necessary.
3a. Via ADB: adb push <file> /system/framework/<file>
3b. Via terminal emu: cp <file> /system/framework/<file>
3c. Via root explorer, etc. Copy paste. (easiest method if you are unsure)
5. Reboot and enjoy.
It does not matter about 2e, that is not the issue, this battery mod for Froyo is not a flashable.zip.
In the OP the link was the deodexed version which I do not believe works with an Odexed ROM and he stated and incombatabilty issue. He does not have access to ADB and I am not trying to make him spend money on Root Explorer but it is an easy way to access the root and modify framework-res.apk when adb is not an option.
Here is the version from the OP it is not for JI6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756627
How to install:
this does not work with rom manager
copy the file over to the root of your sdcard, rename it update.zip, reboot into recovery mode, select "reinstall packages"

No just flash with Odin back to stock and then reflash your version of Cognition, I am not sure what went wrong, that is the method I used although, I had to do this process twice to get it right. I had to Odin back to stock and reflash Cognition and it worked on the second try. Post your question on the section for the mod. You used this one I hope. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=799511 Make sure you copied and pasted only the framework-res.apk in the system/ data / framework.
Dude, I would just use metamorph. You can copy any paste the png files if you don't like minimalistic battery circle.

[Q] Captivate with Darky's 9.3 swype problems

Hi there, I would have posted in the captivate android dev darky's thread but apparently I need 10 posts for that or something stupid.
I was on Darky's 9.2 and was all working well and then swype told me the license had expired so I thought I may as well update to 9.3 because I thought that might fix my swype. Updated to that and selected the swype option in the darky app etc and that didn't seem to work, swype still says I need a new license. I signed up for the swype beta and downloaded that but in order to install the new swype I have to uninstall my current version. How do I go about doing this? If I go settings/manage apps/all/swype the uninstall option is greyed out. How do I uninstall it?
Thanks

I backed up my old swype from when I was using cognition and just tried to restore that but it said swype crashed.
I meant delete current version then sign up for beta and dl

Oh I see, didn't see the uninstall but. Cool thanks will try that now.
I now go through all the steps in the swype installer and at the end it says application not installed.
Did you try both dl versions?
CM7
You mean full and english/spanish? Yup.
I found this:
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/3922-Application-Not-Installed-Have-lost-Swype
Ok first things first;
1: Your Rooted and have a Root file explorer
2: You have 2 files that you downloaded, Swype.apk and libSwypeCore.so
Remove original swype.apk from /system/app then remove the libSwypeCore.so from /system/lib.
Restart phone
Now add your new swype.apk to /system/app and the libSwypeCore.so to /system/lib
and restart just to make sure
Click to collapse
I tried deleting libSwypeCore.so through root explorer but it said read only, how do I delete this?
Top there I'd a button in root explorer r/o or r/w. Click it, try again
CM7
Okay, I deleted that file and it still didn't work so I restarted my phone and it installed and now works perfectly. Thanks
Glad it worked

Arabic Swype on Captivate!
I've actually encountered several woes when it comes to Swype on my Captivate but using Darky's ROM is still worth it in my opinion!
What adds to my troubles is the fact that I use Arabic on my Swype keyboard so the BETA by itself is no good.
However for those in my situation the solution goes something along the lines of:
1- Remove anything Swype related on your phone (Swype.apk/Swype Installer/LibSwypeCore.So) so you can have a fresh start with this.
LibSwypeCore.so is found in /system/lib/
2- Sign up and install the Swype BETA
3- After installing the BETA go to : /data/data/com.swype.android.inputmethod/swypedata/
4- Make a copy of "license.dat" file.
This is essential as without it you will most likely receive "This package of Swype is configured for another device" error.
5- Place the copy somewhere convenient like /mnt/sdcard for example.
6- Uninstall the Swype BETA,Swype Installer and delete the LibSwypeCore. So
7- Get the Swype.apk & LibSwypeCore.So that comes with Darky 9.3
8- Place the Darky LibSwypeCore.so in /system/lib
The rest of the guide is dedicated to adding arabic to the Swype package
9- First get a hold of a swype package that already has Arabic on it (Dr.Akrim Gingerblue ROM for example)
10- Rename the Darky Swype.apk to SwypeD.zip
11- Rename the Arabic Swype.apk to SwypeA.zip and extract its contents
12- Go to the extracted folder then navigate to \assets\files
13- Search for and select all files containing Arabic
14- Copy the selected files and paste them into SwypeD.zip\assets\files
Note: Do NOT extract the SwypeD.zip as repacking it would require signing which is a hassle I like to avoid.
15- Now go to \assets\keyboards in the SwypeA extracted folder
16- Search for and select all files containing Arabic
17- Copy the selected files and paste them into SwypeD.zip\assets\keyboards
18- Lastly, go to SwypeD.zip\assets\files\languages.lst and open the file in notepad.
19- add Arabic to the language list so it should look something like:
"Arabic,EnglishUS,Russian,Hebrew,EnglishUK"
20- Repeat the above process to helplanguages.lst
21- Rename SwypeD.zip back to SwypeD.apk or whatever you like (Swype.apk)
22- Place this newly modified apk in /system/app
23- Enjoy
EDIT: IF The method above does not work there is an alternative method of simply changing your Model Number (via editting the build.prop file found in /system/ and replace any mentions of "SGH-i897" with "GT-I9000"
This will allow you to use any Swype package that provides arabic with no problems.

u get this working on ur rom? Every theme I try wrecks my swype

Temporary Fun (:

Seeing as some of the framework needs to be modded for a pre-rooted version of the 1.2 ROM I figured I would throw a little zip together with some stuff to play with. Its nothing special. Instructions:
1. Download the attached zip file to your computer and extract it onto your desktop, your documents, your "taxes 1993" folder, "kittens folder", or wherever you want for that matter.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT CWM FLASHABLE, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
2. Download one of Nemith's ROMs from here.
3. Use winrar, archive manager or any other software you have that can open up zip files and open the rom you downloaded in step 2. Once thats open, click on "system", then "bin".
4. Go back to the files you downloaded and extracted in step 1 and you will see something called 'su' simply drag and drop the 'su' file into that "bin" folder you opened in step 3. It might take a minute to add it to the zip archive so be patient.
5. Once that is done, click the back button in winrar or whatever your using so you will now be in the "system" folder and no longer in /system/bin. You should see a folder called "app", click on it. Once thats open, drag and drop the apks that were included in the zip into there and give them a second to be added in.
6. Once that is done, your free to add any additional apks that you either downloaded or have backed up from a previous setup. (extract some from root explorer before flashing the update if you would like, then copy those on there.)
7. Now that you have all the apks you want added in there, close the zip, put it on your sdcard and flash that bad boy up.
Note: I included 2 launchers in there, VTL and ADW free. You can add both of them if you want and try them out or just pick one or the other. The apk that says something about gojimi is the VTL launcher. Also, feel free to add apps that require root since you have root access thanks to that business with su earlier. This doesnt have the market because BN is gay and their custom framework needs to be hacked, (thank you for the Nook though. ) also, youll need to select one of the custom launchers if you wanna use all of the apps you added. Superuser.apk and the nookcolor tools utility are included in the zip.
I believe this is not considered warez since all the files included are free, mods feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Once again, this doesnt have market, just a guide to adding apps and being able to use root.
Hit thanks if I helped you.

so no market means no gapps either?
what about amazon appstore?
This is great. I already have it up and running with a bunch of other apks and a third party launcher using this same method, but the nook color tools and root will be helpful too (enabling the installation of "unknown apps" will be very good).

Amazon App store should work now that you mention it. Just download the apk online and put it in there. Hahah Im working on a full rooted rom but I figured Id give you all something easy to do for now.
do all apk have to into system app as i think amazon installs to data folder
You can sideload the Amazon app (or download it through the browser) after you do the steps in the OP. After it boots, open Nook Color Utils (tools?) and then uncheck and check the unknown apps option at the top. After that you should be able to download and install or sideload anything into data/app.

In the stock 1.2 zip thread here

I suggested loading one of the one-click root apps into the ROM? Does that work?
I did try installing with z4root in system/apps and it didn't work. Though that may have been because it needs to run from data/app (maybe?). Don't know. Haven't tried it that way yet.

This is unbelievable! Thanks so much for this.
I use my nook for 70% reading + 30 % for emailing and web browsing.
I installed CM7 on emmc, but the battery sleep issue is killing (goes from 100 to 0% in a day) + I cannot use the stock Nook reading App. The Nook market app sucks compared to the stock nook app.
I was ideally looking for a solution which would allow me to use the stock nook reader + email + good web browser.
So can I sideload apps such as Dolphin HD browser and Any email client, using this method? Is there any limit to sideloading apps in the system/app folder? I do have a bunch of apk's that I would love to use.
Thanks in advance!

Yes you can do all of that! And I dot think you'll run into any problems unless you have like 600 Mbs of apps. Hahaha

Also, will this all be wiped out if B&N force-upgrades over wifi?

Don't think it'll work on our device. And if it did work for the fascinate you would prolly need to be on a touch wiz rom as well.
good day.

What Chopper said could be true. At any rate try this:
Long press on your file
Hit extract
Go to the extracted folder
Long press on your extracted file
Hit move or copy
Navigate to system /app folder
Hit the system rw if necessary
Paste the file
Re boot

I have a different app but same problem. I have ES File Explorer I can copy the file but when I get to system/app I have not been able to figure out how to paste the file. Anyplace I do the long press in system/app there is an app that it thinks I'm wanting to do something with and I don't get the paste option. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Okay so I figured out how to paste it and it wasn't allowed. No I can't find the apk at all. I have even cleared cache and tried to re-download and I get the Ballero-2.apk actually I am up to Ballero-5.apk and can find none of those either.
un-rooted, microSD card, Go Launcher, ES File Explorer, HomeCatcher
Thanks again for your help.

Es file explorer is not as consistent when it comes to giving you root access, which is what you need to paste in system, app. Imo, root explorer is a must.
Edit; although I read that you can obtain that permission somewhere in the es file explorer settings

How to edit/change system file

I have Galaxy Note with ICS 4.0.4, and my note already root, my question is why I couldn't change/edit txt file with Root Browser.
When I opened the file, it can be opened and edited, and after I save the file, reopen it, it still the same with the old one (before edit).
Can someone here tell me why and how to edit in system file?
Thx
How can you justify this thread in Dev section?
Mods please move to Q&A

Sounds like you don't have full root, try to paste a system app in system/app folder (& set permissions), if the file won't paste you need to root your phone,
There's enough guides for this so no point in repeating them.
If it will paste, then post your query including what you're trying to achieve in Q&A section or pm me, see if I can help.

I've already tested with copy, delete, rename & change file properties at system files.
It will work temporary only if I do a setting on "ES File Explorer" application. I have to go to setting and uncheck and check the Mount File System (Mount / . / system as writable).
But it worked only temporary, the file properties will back to before, only copy, delete, rename files still remain.
If after sometimes, I want to copy or delete or edit a file, I have to do the same procedure again with the help of "ES File Explorer" app.
The problem is, the file system cannot be changed if using some program like Volume+, CallRecorder, so the application didn't effect, even with the setting above.
Note : I've already checked with Root Checker application, ant it's said "Already Rooted"
Now I am using ICS 4.0.4 official for my Galaxy Note.
Ugrade from Gingerbread to CS with Mobile ODIN from Play Store.
Any suggestion which I can do to set the system, so it won't always return to lock the file (not editable) ?
Thx
Go to settings of es and root setting N make sure all 4 options are checked.
