i checked it hundreds times... i send text to myself to try if the notification tone changed, but no, it didnt...

Cool you found a workaround, never had trouble myself. BTW, were you changing the notification sound in the messaging app or just in overall settings?

Got the same problem, also can't turn off the usb debugging mode and change most of settings. Looks like it appeared after I enabled sideloading and removed Start-Up Sound and some att apps.
I am on JH7, rooted, enabled non market apps.
Can anyone help?

Did you try to change the notification sounds within the app itself? Open SMS, hit menu, settings or options, then notification. Same with email.

that won't work, but try the attached file, made by MarcLandis...
There is a small bug here!
When you enable "Play a sound" (and the rest is diabled) it both play a sound AND display a notification box.
If you disable "Play a sound" (and everything else) it only show that there is a new e-mail in the bottom of the screen.
I would like to hear the sound without the notification.
Sorry - didn't see post 4 before I posted mine. I will try the cab from kkempe
The cab works - but now it is not possible to enable sound at all.
try to deinstall the software, enable the sound and reinstall. might help, but i didn't experience this behaviour while using this cab.

Thanks for the advise - but it didn't work. Still no sound (and ofcause no notification)
Can you uninstall a cab without runing it again? and how to do that?
Silly of me - I know how to uninstall a cab.
But no matter what I do - I can't just get a sound whitout the display of the e-mail notification ..
Can anybody help?
I have no problems. I just get the sound and the led ring is on.
I've changed nothing.

go into chomp's settings and turn off notifications.
then go into default android sms and turn off notifications.
go back into chomp and turn on notifications.
this should make it so your g1 only notifies via chomp. however, if you still get multiple alerts for a new sms, one of the envelopes will have a greenish border...this is the notification for chompsms. it looks almost exactly like the default icon, but it has the green color around the envelope thingy.
WOOO
Great! Simple! Easy! Awesome App Finally A Way To Text Without Sliding The Qwerty Out...great Work

I left dgalert installed and turned of notification in chompsms, made sure when asked which to use as a default, set chomp as default. Now i get the benefits of chompsms with one notification, just dont get the green envelope.
I kinda wish it wasn't a direct bite of the iPhone Texting module and it was made custom to the G1...its still cool though.
I kinda wish it supported MMS. Except for the better rates on international texting via Chomp, it's fairly useless to me.

Phone does not vibrate on incoming text messages (solved)

I have tried everything and still cant get it to vibrate on incoming text messages. (It does vibrate on incoming call)
settings/sound & display/Phone vibrate (checked)
messaging/settings/Vibrate (checked)
Any idea? Thanks
Try using Handcent SMS. If that doesn't work, wipe.
smspop up works as well.
have u tried: menu/settings/all settings/sounds nd notifications/notifications/scroll to new message nd check vibrate.

Tried with this one too and didn't work either
I did a factory data reset and didn't work either.
Then I did a Clear Storage (aka Hard Reset) via fastboot (hold down volume + power) and it WORKED. It is all good now. Thank you all for your replies.

I don't see these settings on my Nexus One, I think you are talking about G1/My Touch settings.. but thanks
Alternately
I had this problem too, nothing worked. Toggled native messenger app vibrate on/off, tried Handcent long/short/custom, etc. Nothing worked, phone vibrated for calls, but not messages. Read on howardforums to try the app "Sound Manager," use "vibrate settings" toggled "vibrate whenever possible," and it worked. Handcent & native messaging vibrate upon receive message and can set custom length vibrate alerts in Hancent. App is in the market for free, good luck.
I had the same problem. Downloaded Sound Manager and found that "notifications" were set to "never vibrate".
I'm not sure how this got set, but all is well now. Cheers, ArmyAndy!
@ shadywasabi - You were right I checked all setting in the setting app that came with the phone, but then I downloaded sound manager. I opened the app pressed menu key and under Notification Setting/ Don't Vibrate was checked so I just changed it to Vibrate Whenever Possible. Then tested my notifications in handcent and it works. THX
try go launcher sms, in go launcher sms settings you can configure to off vibration ..

Handcent SMS duplicate message

Whenever I get a message using Handcent I also get a duplicate message in my stock msgr. How do I disable this? I have Handcent set as my default msngr.
have you tried going into stock app then
menu > settings > auto retrieve > off ?
might only apply to MMS tho and not regular SMS...if that doesn't work, dunno
On the stock msgr, you go into settings and turn off the notifications under settings, like sound, vibrate etc.
if you are rooted and wanna use handcent sms.. rather than the default then just use root explorer go to system/apps then delete the mms.apk

How can I get the native mms to stop popping up with handcent mms? I've tried disabling auto retrieve along with removing the mms.apk, but it still pops up.
Any idea on how to make sure the native mms doesn't popup when receiving a new message?
default messaging application > settings >In the notifications settings , uncheck the notification bar.

Be careful with that, you will most likely kill mms, unless one of the recent handcent updates has changed something.

I remember reading that deleting important apk's like that via root explorer can be dangerous. If you decide to delete it that way, make a nand backup first.

I've been using handcent for quite some time now. I simply go into the stock SMS application and turn absolutely everything off, including auto-retrieve, notification sounds, notification vibrate, etc.
My settings are backed up through Titanium Backup, so when I flash a new ROM, I just re-apply the backup of the settings. Works wonderfully for me.

Tried this, but then I can't get MMS (messages with photo attachments). Everything else works, but MMS stops working.
To begin with, I am only getting messages duplicated when they come through a gateway such as [email protected]. The ones that come direct from other people are usually fine and I get only 1. I've searched and searched for the answer for this and can't seem to find it.
Does handcent load super slow for you guys. Had to stop using because of that.

Issue with double notification sound...

I get a double notification sound every time i get a text message. The first sound is the one i chose in handcent. The second sound occures 1 second after the first, and its the default notification sound("look at me").
Ive tried unchecking everything in the default messaging app. Ive tried going into settings>sound& display> notification ringtone> silent. Restarting phone after setting these things. And still no fix. I still get the double notification sounds. The 1st i want. The second default sound doesnt go away.
Before I made this thread i did research around the web about this and tried every suggestion. I still have the problem.
Any other suggestions?
also: my phone is not rooted
Wow. Never heard of that... I really don't know what to say.
Root.
Go to messaging app, settings, then just UNCHECK notifications. That should be it. I've had tons of Android phones and use all kinds of 3rd party SMS app, and have no issues.
Make sure you don't have some other SMS app or message notification app also running giving notifications. (missed call, sms popup, chompsms, trackball alert, sms count widget, etc..)

Yeah "nothing" is checked in the default messaging app.
I tried to install chomp to see if it was handcent and it did it with chomp too.
Edit: I found the issue!
Thanks for suggesting about looking for any app that had anything to do with messaging or ringer tones. It was a rarely used app i have called "ringo pro"
I changed the appropriate settings and now everything is fine.
Thank you
