No screens showing - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short...had issues with shutting down and finally decided to call and get a replacement after it's getting worse by the day.
The tech advised me to do a factory wipe and reset. After doing this, I just have a black screen. I have the notification bar showing at the top. I can pull the notification bar down and see the settings there. I can toggle the volume and it'll show the volume going up and down. When I have the lock screen come up, it has the scarecrow lock screen that showed up when I put Cognition 2.2 on there.
When I long push on the home button, task manager comes up.
So now I have no idea what to do. They're sending me a replacement and I'm afraid it's going to show up as Cognition 2.2 when they get my phone and I'm going to have a $450 bill from AT&T show up.

Thanks! It was driving me nuts. I can receive phone calls and can make them by going to the task manager. I can receive texts and send a text back by going to the task manager. But not much else. Need to make sure it's showing stock 2.1 when I send this in.

Which version if cognition are you running? It sounds like you have somehow lost your launcher.
Can you get to recovery mode?

Cognition 2.7 beta
No. I can't get into recovery mode.
Here's what I can do:
When someone calls, it will show as normal and I can answer.
When someone texts, I can see the text and respond. I can even search through my messages.
I can use the pulldown notification screen on the homepage.
However, I have blank screens and bottom functions buttons do not work at all on the homescreen except the long press home button to get to task manager.
I'm hoping the Odin will fix it.

Odin will fix it....your launcher is gone. I asked about the cog version because 2e recovery is available with last couple and you could flash that way. I am sure there is a way to push a new launcher apk using adb but someone more experienced with adb would have to explain.

Lock 2.0 Donate

I got the donate version (love it) but i have moved apps to sd card on my phone, and i have noticed this program, along with a few others need to be started when you restart your phone, is this the case if your apps are on the phone? Also is there a means to tell the g1 what apps i would like it to run on startup?
the new version gives u an option to run at start up
Doh!!! now i really feel like an idiot... I blame linux for my brain frying.
Thanks alot got it set now
i went ahead and got the donate version and i really love the app i just hate how it goes to sleep when i am only using touch. but the app is making my iphone friends so jealous
Lock 2.0 Problem
Well I got the lock 2.0 donate version. Whenever I run the app for it to download the default.zip file it says "the application lock 2.0 has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
But the free version runs fine..
Can not find the donate version in the market - Bulgaria/Europe
Runs fine on my G1

I found a bug that i reported to the developer.
You can bypass the lock feature, click menu-set skin-back button.
Brings you to the homescreen not back to the lock screen
i liked the app, but asked for a refund becuz when lock2.0 was running, my notification sounds wouldn't work.
anyone else have this problem? i would get the LED notification, but no sound.

No he did not. I still get no sound wheter it's running or not. Hopefully I get it back when I uninstall.
this app worked fine until i turned on the option to have it open on startup. now my phone hangs on the android loading screen. it will not go past it. anyone else had this problem? i have tried to unistall via adb but couldnt figure out how to. any help would be great. thanks!
Grrrr... I uninstalled it, too unstable to be truly usefull. Restart the phone and you have to restart the program, I know you can set it to run at start-up but then it does not bypass that fugly "stock" locked screen. Notifications work on and off, made me miss so many emails....... I'll wait and see if dev can work all those bugs out, may be reinstall it in a month or so.
Weird, I don't have any problems with it. Yeah, when the phone restarts it goes back to the stock locked screen, but I simply enter my unlock pattern and done.
lock 2.0 notification problems
I've read in a few posts where people have notification problems, either no notificaton, or you cant pull down the notification screen etc. I had this problem too intermitantly, i played with it, and found a work around, hopefully help some others experiencing the same probs till the dev comes up with a fix. When you first boot your phone, if you have the proggy set to come on at startup, you have about 3 seconds, where it boots to your normal android start screen (half window, with time network information in it.) if you wait about 3 seconds, it will autolock into your lock 2.0 program. at this point your notifications are screwed, but if when it first boots to the normal android boot screen, and you hit the menu button, it will move to your desktop, and then autolock. You should be good to go at this point. everytime i press menu before it locks, i have 0 notification problems. Hope this helps some of you out there
Have you shared that with the dev yet, n1gh7m4r3?

Can someone help me out?

I tried doing a search but I honestly don't know what to enter--tried button layout, android controls, etc--no dice.
On the Touch, it used to be that if you held the camera button down, it took you straight to home. That does not seem to be the case anymore. Can anyone tell me if the Touch has a way to do that now--and if not, how in the world are you getting out of the browser without losing all of your progress? Task Switcher doesn't seem to allow me to choose my home screen, and if I switch to something else and then exit out of that, my browser is waiting for me, like the sneaky bastard it is.

if you aare using an nbh that has the task switcher built into it, then you need to only hold the camera button for a second for home.
tap - back
hold for a sec - home
long hold - task switcher
Awesome! It's going to take some getting used to, but this is a huge help.
Now if I could only figure out how to install themes...

Help! Widgetlocker and sms popup

So I've been spending the better part of an hour trying to convince widgetlocker to block sms popup but can't seem to figure out the proper system name. I have tried "SMS Popup", "android-smspopup", and "com.smspopup.*" any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to data/app and try to find it.

why not just uninstall SMS popup or tell SMS popup not to try and unlock screen?
It doesn't unlock the screen. It pops up in front of widget locker instead of waiting for me to unlock it like it does by default. I tried the whole trying to figure it out through installed apps thing too. Even tried finding it before the names changed in running apps list. Not happening.

I'm also trying to figure this out... I love the customization for individual contacts that SMS Popup offers, and I'm not ready to lose that.... so if anyone can figure it out... haha.

I have never once said it unlocks the screen. And it never unlocks the phone on any setting. It does turn the screen on by default but I turned that off long ago. the problem is when I turn the screen on sms popup sits on top of the lockscreen with widgetlocker. Widgetlocker has an option but you need the actually system name such as "com.handcent.nextsms" to handcent. I just need that one little line of text to fix this. Just don't know what it is for sms popup.

Ahh but I am using sms popup as I like the stock sms app.

All you had to do to get that line was navigate to /data/app with root explorer and find SMS popup.
net.everythingandroid.smspopup-1.apk
Its a liveable issue. It doesn't wake the screen at least but I know there has to be a way to figure it out. Its probably not even that hard but I don't know enough about programming or how android works to do so. I've been on vacation since the issue started and getting on a plane home now. Hopefully ill be able to figure it out with a better workspace blah.
Edit: either you posted that while I was typing or im blind. I actually tried that my device just showed smspopup.apk I thank you very much sir.

[Q] Sticking buttons

Lately I have noticed that buttons on my phone stick. It first started happening when i would text, it was annoying because when i would type any word with an 'A' in it it would select the text than overwrite it. It took me a while to figure out the shortcut for select all with the menu button and, in these cases, i could tap the menu button to resume typing as normal. I couldn't believe a capacitive button could stick like that, but it wasn't too often.
Then last night as I was typing a whole bunch of apps started launching. Again I had to look up the shortcuts for apps to find that my search button that was stuck.
So I have experienced this on several ROMs and I'm thinking it's a hardware issue, but I'm one of those stubborn folks that would rather try to live with things instead of getting a new phone. I already have my invisible shield installed, my ROM set up how I like, etc...just rather not go through the hassle. Has anyone experienced this before? Is this a sign my capacitive buttons are going to fail or something?

[SOLVED] Anyone Know How...

Okay, so I want to be able to do a couple of things. The first is nagging me, as I'm sure there's a way to do it, the second I'm not so sure about.
1) I want to be able to access the multi-tasking/Recent Apps list from anywhere. My idea is to push and hold Menu to get it to pop up, since Home uses Google Now when it's pushed and held. I know there was a way to do that with the search key back when we had 4 keys using LaunchKey, but I can't find anything to let me assign push/hold functionality to Menu. I'm rooted, so I'm sure there's a way to do this...
2) This I'm not so sure of. Because of the charging port being on the side of the phone, it works best in my car when it's held in a landscape orientation in my windshield-mounted dock. This is great for everything except one thing: the dialer. I know in most AOSP custom ROMs I've used on other phones, the dialer rotates with the phone. Since I've rarely stuck to stock on a phone before, and we're kind of forced to here, is there a way to get the dialer to rotate?

1. What jonslice says.
2. Download another dialer in the play store.
Holy crap. I feel so stupid now. How did I not know that? LOL
And yeah, downloaded another dialer. Forgot I could do that (since I've never really done it before). Thanks guys!
