Hello, i have searched on xda-developers how to use Task 29 tool, and it's not explained very well, so i am going to explain you how to use it... I would like to thank to agent_47 for his explanation, and link.
We use Task 29 to format phone memory. When we install a lot of ROMs, sometimes new ROM just overwrite old ROM files, not delete them. That cause new ROM to unstability.
(IMPORTANT) Using Task 29, phone memory will be deleted, but it won't delete you SPL and Radio
1. Connect your XPeria X1 to PC in Disk Drive mode.
2. Transfer the custom ROM you want to install on ROOT of memory card and make sure that it's named "kovsimg.nbh"
3. Disconnect phone from USB.
4. (IMPORTANT) DO NOT TURN OFF DEVICE, JUST REMOVE MEMORY CARD!
5. Download the Task 29
(Click here to download Task 29)
6. Extract it to Desktop
7. Connect phone in ActiveSync mode. (wait until installs drivers itself)
8. Now open "task29" folder, and there is 9 items.
9. Run ROMUpdateUtility (Vista/7 Users - right click>Run as Administrator)
10. Follow on screen instructions, and it will start to clean storage. (It says that this process takes up to ten minutes, but it only takes 2,3 minutes top)
11. When the bar comes to 100%, press finish.
12. (IMPORTANT) THE PHONE WILL REBOOT ITSELF AND IT WILL STUCK ON SONY ERICSSON LOGO! But that's okay, because there is no ROM to run, we just cleaned the phone storage.
13. Remove battery and insert memory card. (We put custom ROM on memory card in step 2)
14. Put battery and cover on, and press the volume button down, and power button, and HOLD BOTH BUTTONS UNTIL 3-colored screen shows.
15. That's it, now follow on-screen instructions to install custom ROM, and when done, i strongly reccomend to HARD RESET PHONE.
Hard Reset - Press two buttons below screen (left and right) and hold it, and press the power button UNTIL VIBRATE, then release the power button, BUT STILL HOLD TWO BUTTONS BELLOW THE SCREEN (IMPORTANT)
That's it, i have done it for the first time, and i was looking for explanation like this ( I do not want to brag myself ) So i hope i made you easy this process, and belive me, my phone it really works faster after Task 29.
Also, take a look at my other thread "Installing new custom ROM using phone" in which is explained how to install a custom ROM also step-by-step.
That's a great guide to flashing ROMs! Very straightforward and clear.
Wish it existed when I was flashing a custom ROM for the first time.
It would be nice to have it stickied as it's really very helpfull and informative.

Thanks again! Well, i think it's better this way, there are many steps in this thread, and in the other one, so might be confusing but thank you for interesting but i will put link into this thread for "Installing new custom ROM using phone"
Hi,
nice one. Could have been added to the original thread but maybe it's easier to find like this.
I won't sticky it, as we want to keep as little stickies as possible to keep the forum "tidy", but I will add this to the reference thread.
I also updated the title.
Thx and best, DK

Well, we need to reset phone BEFORE FIRST RUN
I don't think that's actually necessary. But you would be wasting a lot of time to configure the system if you activated the phone before the hard reset (because then you have to configure it again anyways).

Help. I have tried to run task29 but every time the phone gets into bootloader mode I get connection error [260]. My computer then says "USB device not recognized". My HardSPL version is Olinex-0.72. I am using Energy Rom.

Thanks for your help milancex. I am running Windows 7 (genuine) and I have reinstalled WMDC. My Xperia is still not recognized in bootloader mode.
I reran the X1_HardSPL.exe and it was able to connect (it probably loads bootloader drivers). It seems that HardSPL uninstalls the bootloader drivers when it finishes running
A check of the properties of the Unknown Device under Device Manager when I connect my X1 in bootloader mode says that windows stopped the device because there was a problem with it.
Any other ideas?
Greetings

best I could find
I found this in the wiki in a link...

First download lokiwiz v2b. Don't use previous versions or you'll not get through this!!
Hard reset your device (not necessary, but it ensures you'll have no hassle with ActiveSync).
Done that? Good. Extract the lokiwiz v2b .zip folder and copy enablerapi.cab to your memory card or to 'My Documents' folder on your device. Then execute the 'enablerapi.cab'.
Done? Just switch off the device (power button; put it in standby mode).
If you have ActiveSync already installed, un-install it and re-install directly afterwards (ensure a brand new partnership).
Then when prompted by ActiveSync, plug in your USB cable PC-PPC and it should recognise as usual.
Then execute the lokiwiz.bat file (in the folder that was generated earlier when you extracted the lokiwiz02b.zip file) and when you see the MS Dos (black screen) choose the option CID Unlock (SuperCID) and wait for it to COMPLETELY finish. You'll know it's finished when your Wizard is re-booting. Plug out your USB cable at this stage.
Once re-booted and back into WM5, re-connect your cable and if all goes well it should re-connect to Active Sync (wait till it has finished syncing or says connected!).
Finally......double click the executable file, which should be:
RUU_Prodigy_1060701_101_11310_QTEK_WWE_Ship.exe
Hopefully it will now install the ROM without hiccups (about 10 minutes).
Sorry to you gurus for the lengthy explanation, but some of us are still relatively inexperienced to this and a thorough (if you can call it that) explanation of the processes will really be appreciated. I certainly have done when some of guys broke it down to me in the past.
I'm hoping this ROM will not dissapoint me as the others have done, as I've been getting quite frustrated and angry about the whole WM5 & HTC thing.
Good luck.

Anything I forgot???
Suggestions??? Tips??
Thanks
yes, just make sure that you CID unlock the phone and you'll be able to install any rom of your choice.
I guess you dont lock the phone when youre done?
Also when you are done I guess then you have to reinstall all your programs and resync your phone. It will be like a new phone like doing a hard reset.
Thanks

Hi there,
I installed a bunch of stuff on the AKU3.2 Rom H-tec innov / O2 ROM which i found on the ftp and now when i soft-reset the phone, it either gets stuck (in windows) on Today, where it only loads like half of it and is consequently stuck or it resets again...
How would I be able to solve this issue having that it doesn't connect to ActiveSync?
Thanks a bunch,
John

Thanks a lot
I've achieved putting it into bootloader mode, how would I go about reflashing now?
lol, ok!
So basically this is the result of my 2 hour research::
If you're Wizard is frozen, you do this:
1. Turn off USB in ActiveSync
2. Download mtty
3. While phone is off, press Camera button then holding it press Power button on phone and it will load in bootloader mode
4. Connect mtty to the phone via usb
5. <<< Here is when my research parts ways
6a. You can use a sd card and put an image on it, using mtty reflash the phone (don't know how to do that or where to get the image)
6b. There's another way of reflashing the phone...
Can anyone fill me in on that?

That seems a bit more complicated than what is really needed.
Assuming that your device was a G3 before you started, you are CID unlocked and you didn't overwrite incompatible bootloaders on a G4 device by using a G3 only ROM:
Once you are in bootloader, connect your USB cable. You should see the letters USB in the lower corner of your device.
Reflash with an official AKU2 ROM (latest available from your carrier's website.)
to do this once you are in bootloader mode and see USB in the lower corner execute the rom installer.
Don't flash an AKU3 Rom until you read all the threads completely on them. Several programs that work with AKU2 do not work with AKU3 and will freeze your device - Which appears to be what you are experiencing. There is still work being done on AKU3 and they aren't for mainstream use yet. There are driver incompatibilities, database restructures and such that haven't been accounted for in some software. The most common issues are documented repeatedly in every AKU3 ROM thread.

@ ionutzu
Please update how the solutions above worked for ya. Zzan's solution is standard and most used along with being the easiest & should definitely work.
^^ you guys are wonderful!
Pretty much this is how it works, I couldn't find the "easy" solution anywhere, but now I figured it out.
1. Turn on phone holding camera button + power button
2. Connect via USB
3. Make sure USB is written in bottom left corner of PPC screen
4. Run an original ROM update (that is, the ones coming straight from T-Mob, I've tried it with other roms, it doesn't work)
5. It should work, you should have a fresh copy
6. I guess put your customized rom and try again....
Thanks for the help.

Glad it worked out for you.
Ok to help the new users on this site iv decided to put toghther a guide on how to liberate > hard spl > flash Rom for your shift.
Step one
liberate your HTC shift
heres some great instructions with a video of the whole process
http://www.modaco.com/content/forum/266537/View-Topic/
at this stage you do not need to go an install IE/Office etc you just need to liberate the device so you can use the USB tools.
step two
make sure USB tools is working run this on your Snapview side and on vista windows mobile device centre should open up and ask you to link your device(no harm i followed through and unticked all boxes.
step 3
follow these instructions on this thread to hard spl your device.
(now at this stage when you are following these instructions make sure on your snapview side that you have disabled your modem and USB tools is running and you have the 2 arrows at the top)
on vista side make sure your device centre has picked up your device. Also do not have any USB devices connected to your shift (as this causes a problem and hangs with a disabled USB message!!!)
follow these instructions---
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406606
Step 4 (almost there)
download a rom of your choice
my current fav is i00's rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480525
extract the rom you should have 2 files in the folder
CustomRUU.exe
RUU_Signed.nbh
if you can only see one file open winrar and then go through win rar to extract -
run the .exe adn thats it.
if it fails ....
on vista bring up comm manager click on advance and reset snapVue
check to see if its restarting and then restart vista
now first go into vista
launch device windows mobile device centre
click on mobile device settings
connection settings
untick allow USB connections
now go into snap view run USB TOOLS
give it a minute
go back into vista
run the rom update......
if you follow this through each stage the steps will make sense to you eg USB tools etc
good luck

you have to run the file by clicking right click on the file and run as adminsterator
HTC USB Tool
I cannot attach the unit, is there a proces to troubleshoot the usb tools
on the vista side in comm manager make sure that you have turned off wifi - modem - bluetooth, then click on advance and reset snapview, then reset vista and try again once its all loaded up, if it still does not work, uninstall mobile device manager on vista and reinstall again, treat it exactly the same as if you where having issues trying to connect your phone via cable to your laptop/pc....

IE, office mobile, total commander, notes installed & work fine
enableRapi OK
but when proceeding with ShiftHardSPLFinal, when it flashes, It goes from 0%

Hi all, sorry for my english.
My experience is almost the same. In my opinion the HSPL process is not progressively indicated, but it happens regularly. Moreover, an hard reset follows the precess, thus, at the end, me too found WM in factory default mode. I liberated WM again, but till now i wasn't able to flash another ROM just to check if my Shift has been HardSPL'ed.
After many days without sleeping , i've just made the first call with my shift. Thank you, thank you and thank you.
we are waiting for keyborad solution, it's AZERTY but it shows QWERTY when typing.
Thank for all you did, you do and you'll do for us.
HELP!
I have been searching for possible solutions but cannot find one. Is it possible to Liberate a shift without a working sim card. I left ATT for Sprint years ago, so I do not have an active sim card.
Hi
I'm following Crackwhore's excellent guide to try and flash my Blackstone to WinMo 6.5. So far I've succesfully dealt with the whole USB driver problem (I'm running 7 x64), and I can get my phone to load USPL, but I can't seem to get the next bit right. I've downloaded Miri's 6.5 ROM, what do I do next? I tried running the BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe with the phone connected in bootloader mode - it didn't work. Neither did the HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.exe file suggested by the guide. It says in the program that I should be connected with ActiceSync, is this actually the case? Sorry for this confusion, I'm sure it's simple when you know how...
Thanks
Fredley
Have you disabled the active sync in the PC ?
You have to go to the Windows mobile device center and disable allow USB connection i think. Then when your screen says USPL (the color screen) connect to the PC, it should display USB on the display, after that execute the BlackstoneRUUWrapper.exe. Don't forgot the Hard Reset after flash (power up with both volume buttons pressed).
I think I'm fine now, sorry for that. My problem was not going through the whole USPL process before trying to flash a ROM. I am loading the ROM now, fingers crossed!
fredley: Glad to hear it's sorted.
In future, please use the sticky guides to post questions. You actually get better exposure there. Crackwhore and Fallen sparten (and even me sometimes ) follow those and reply quickly.

As Promised:
1) Download the latest Hard-SPL package (currently v5.20) from here and extract to an empty folder.
2) You must have your phone synced with your PC.
XP users need Activesync from here: here
Vista/Windows 7 users need Windows Mobile Device Centre from here: here
3) NEW: internet access is required as the program checks online for updates and license.
4) Run Jade-Hard-SPL.EXE on your PC. Make sure it's launched from a local drive, not a network drive.
If you using Vista/Windows 7, launching as Administrator is strongly recommended, on XP administrator login is required.
Important: if your AV (norton/symantec mainly) warns about a virus, ignore it, it just doesn't like the packer I used to pack the program. Disabling your AV is strongly recommended.
5) If possible, always use Automatic flash mode (for instructions on how to use the Manual mode, see troubleshooting advice here). You may get a message stating this is not for your device, click yes and allow the screen to go blank.
6) It will ask you to wait while it prepares for the flashing, press OK. Follow the steps in the program and then in the RUU.
8) Device should go to a tricolour screen now that says 1.40.1000 (not .0000!!!), this is the SSPL version, which is temporary. When your phone goes to the bootloader screen for the first time, quickly unplug the USB cable, then reconnect it. Wait around 30 seconds and click Next on your PC.
9) SPLwill now flash, device automatically reboots, job done.
10)Tto confirm you got it installed, go into bootloader mode (tricolour screen!) and the screen will show 2.32.OliNex, which is the Hard-SPL version. If it is 1.64.xxx instead, then please make sure you actually download last version (v5.20) and flash using that. 2.32.OliNex is the correct Hard-SPL version.
These instructions SHOULD work first time every time.
Instructions copied from OliNex, tidied up by me. USB disconnect/reconnect trick discovered by zannyuk and found here.
I recommend lsc's WM6.5 ROM (here) for WM 6.5 only and Ironeagle's Jade Overloaded (here) for all the trimmings.
PM me with any errors or corrections. And feel free to comment
Has anyone used this yet? Can you let me know?
i've used it and it works pefectly no more rubbish orange roms.
Jade Flashing Guide
Hi,
When trying to following these instructions, I cannot get past instr 6) as at that point I get the error:
"hard- spl is for non-commercial purpose only,we have detected that you appear to alreadyhvae unlocked a device, if you wish to unlock commercially"
The phone does not go into the bootloader mode (tricolor screen), the program terminates at this point, please advise how to overcome this and successfully apply the Hard SPL v5.2
Thanks
Look under the Hard SPL stickie to resolve this one.
Please can you point HSPL Stickie as I tried to find this information and was unable to. Your help is greatly appreicated.
