So i just rooted my droid for the first time today. I have a motorola droid running on 2.2 and i used root version 1.8. I dont know much about this stuff but iv heard it is way better having a rooted phone. Now that i have it rooted, what do i do next? iv tried reading some different websites but it just confuses me. How do i make it look cooler (different themes, icons, widgets, ect.) i know i need roms but where do i find them, and once i find them how do i put it on my phone. any help would be greatly appreaciated.
Sincerely, Rooting Noob.

Hi people,
I'm new to this forum and this is my first thread..
Here is my situation, i just recently bought a Captivate through ebay and its locked.. I will try to find the unlock code using the method in this forum.. after i unlock it, i think i would love to update the android os to 2.2..
will any of this process have the slightly chance of bricking my Captivate?
i will not try to root my Captivate yet coz of the possibility of bricking it..
I will wait until there are solutions to this bricking thing, or when i feel bored i might try this.. ^_^
also, if you guys are kind enough, i would love to know what all kind of things that will brick a Captivate..
Thanks..
I am no expert but XDA helped me with my first smartphone (Palm Treo 750 bought on ebay) and I did everything without any problem. You need to read much until you understand everything clearly and always follow the instructions step by step because these guys know their stuff. Currently buy a Captivate. I love this phone. Already rooted and Im to upgrade FroYo without fear because if it becomes a brick I know that here finds it solution. Good luck.
got to read
Yep, that's the key. Read, read, read, and then you will have to read some more! I'm new to the board also, and this is my first smartphone. I've spent the past month reading threads in the development section when I have the chance (which is not very often...) and there is still a LOT of reading and learning I need to do!
Don't forget to use the search, which might or might not help. Honestly the biggest help is to read all the posts in all the threads - which will take a while!!
Lot's of great help on this board. I'm pretty close to feeling up to speed enough to cook this thing without fear of bricking...
I would wait a while before you do anything like installing the JI6 Froyo ROM. From what I've read, you have more chance of bricking your Cappy during that process than by doing anything else.
BTW, by just rooting or unlocking your unit you have very little chance of bricking your phone. It's what you can do after you root your phone that can cause it to brick. lol
Like the above poster said; "READ, READ, READ" and then when you decide you want to do something, read some more. I've been reading these forums since before August 15 when I got my captivate, and I STILL haven't done anything like rooting because I'm staying "stock" until the official froyo update is released.
Thanks for the nice reply guys.. and yes, i will keep on reading through this forum..
btw, from what i understand, rooting will enable your phone to install android apps from worldwide market right? does it safe? i mean, i heard that someone bricked their phone while installing some apps..
If you are interested in side-loading apps, try the Android Sideload Wonder Machine (it's called something like that). It works well for me. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but it is useful to know.

once you are rooted, you would still have to enable market access (for apps outside your att restricted market)
i would like to see how installing an app bricked a phone.....i call shens.
rooting is easy, and just by rooting your phone you wont brick it. you would actually have to do something to harm it. even then, its all recoverable via ODIN.
Sorry for a noob question.. but, what is JI6? ^_^
JI6 is the version of froyo (android 2.2). Go on the phone to settings-> about phone-> it's in the baseband version. Mine is I897UCJI6 (froyo).

Hey mate the first thing is making sure you got the 3br on your phone. If you do then either flash custom rom (docs kitchen or darkeys or just download jpy from samfirmware) Next thing to do is to flash a different kernel which will give you root ie cf root kernel or hardcores speedmod kernel both give root plus 2e recovery.
Hello,
I would like to try flashing my rogers captivate to ICS. Nothing fancy just a astable bug free ICS. However I am on 2.3.3. I updated through KIES a while back and now I have no idea how to root my phone or install roms. I am afraid the last time I looked into this everything was very different. I have read the forums but am still a little anxious.
Is it possible to root and then install CWM or something to install roms from my current 2.3.3 version? If so how may I do it?
Any help is greatly appreciated
Christopher
By reading all the stickies and reading some more info, you will be a genius at this stuff by the time you're done...
Yeah thats what I am kinda trying to avoid. I have to hack and read so much already it gets really tiring having to keep up with it all. Add to this work and school and its like info overload. I was hoping there might be an easier way than earning another mini phone phD. Thus far I have determined I have to change my kernel... I think? My phone is unrooted. Stock 2.1 to 2.3.3 KIES.
This Site is mentioned for developing. That being said for the rest of us, we are supposed to learn. The reason it's important to read and understand is you can potentially kill your phone.

to root your device use superoneclick all roms are same for Rogers and att captivate so just flash any one you like
I'm thinking about rooting and flashing my vanilla LG-P999 (Wind Mobile version, which I understand is identical to the T-mobile LG Optimus 2X or something.
Nothing fancy, I just want to upgrade to at least 2.3.3 version of Android so I can use some apps that aren't completely archaic. From the digging around I've done it seems like CM7 is the best way to go for my phone, and a video tutorial I've found (I'll link below) outlines how I can root my phone with SuperOneClick and flash to CM7.
Now this is my first time doing anything of the sort, so I'm quite nervous. Please bear with my newbie questions:
- As I understand it, flashing to CM7 requires rooting my phone. The video tutorial (watch?v=yH3qKLXqdSg, I can't post external links so this is the best I can do) outlines the procedure for a LG-P990 using SuperOneClick, whereas my phone is a LG-P999. I'm assuming that it shouldn't be a problem?
- I only want to upgrade my phone to Android 2.3.3 (it's the stock 2.2.2 right now). Another forum told me that CM7 is the most stable "mod" to flash to to accomplish this. Did I understand that right or does CM7 do something else entirely? I was trying to check out the CM wiki but that apparently no longer exists.
If anyone has a more updated method or any other recommendations it would be great if you can help. If this is a redundant thread please delete this thread and point me in the right direction. Much thanks.
SuperOneClick should work with your phone. If you only want the newer Android version, I believe there should also be an LG upgrade available to 2.3.4 for your phone. So, rooting is not a must, but on P990 CM7 is quite nice compared to stock
For more information you might want to try this forum, which is specifically for your phone.
