I found a good app that helps out with GPS while using Cardio Trainer running app.
In the past it always seems that my GPS logging was never consistent and always throwing me off route thus creating some extra mileage to my runs.
It's in the market called "Tracker Booster"
I ran two days and same route and was only off by approx 50 feet.
Used on my Droid Eris running 2.1 Tainted VanV14 one day and Tazz Froyo v14 2.2 on the next day and came up with similar results.
You could prob use this app with any application that uses the phone's GPS.

Not sure if anyone has tried this or discussed it but, I recently installed an app called 'GPS STATUS' off of the market, and every since I have been able to get a lock on several satellites (with it running in the background). This was a MAJOR help for me as I hadn't got any GPS signal that was even close to precise in the whole month I have owned the phone. This is not my first android device (started with a G1 when it was first released...definately the reason I stick with android devices), but I feel it is one of the best available (less flash/flash player) but all in all a solid piece of equipment especially when we get the froyo update...(just my 2 cents; -))...

Hi
Google map navigation is barely usable with my Bell Galaxy S i9000M Vibrant.
It seems that the error on the position is so big that it often think that I am on the next street.
I read various gps "fixes" on these forum. Is there one that actually work?
you are the first i read using JH2 to have this problem
most people are fine with JH2
did you change the default stock GPS settings?
where about are you?
it works fine in toronto GTA all the way to ottawa/quebec and back
try using a better GPS program like CoPilot or many of the Opensource freewares available for android
Quebec city. Could you give me what settings you have in the *#*#1472365#*#* gps setting application? I remember I changed one setting to get AGPS working... maybe it was a bad idea.
thanks for your help. I don't think the problem is google's software however. It works well on my HTC Hero. With my Galaxy S I get a "big circle" arround my position which means that the position is not precise.

thanks, are you in "MS Based" or "standalone" mode?
according to my screenshots they it's on standalone
thanks, will try it (However I didn't see standalone in your screenshots, I only see the GPStest application with the number of satellites and signal, etc.)
scroll down more
ok thanks, on second page
Isn't "standalone" mode slow to get a first fix (cold start) since it doesn't use any assistance?
it takes me only 5 sec to 10 sec
sometimes if the GPS is not responding turn it off
start the GPS software, it will ask you to turn on GPS, say yes
and it will work again

I was fine before updating to jh2. I am in toronto and my gps was locking perfectly and never complained about gps. but after updating to jh2 gps is ****ed up. Now most if the time it doesnt lock or it takes centuries to lock. Gps fixes didnt work either

I am on the same boat as you. JG9 works fine for me. JH2 got issues. Anyways, let's hope 2.2 firmware will fix this.

I called Bell and they all said that I was the first one to report a problem with the GPS
I've also had some issues with the GPS on GJH2 never tried it on previous firmware. Does any one know how the other modes work?
Ok I made a test with standard JH2 settings (standalone GPS mode). It was fine while using Google Navigation, but I was on my bicycle so there was no car roof to block the GPS signal. It worked fine, but I didn't use it much.
I also recorded a track with mytracks (google earth file attached). In yellow the Galaxy S. In red an HTC Hero. I was in bicycle so I was following the right side of the road and parking lot.
We can see that the track for the Hero is fine. The Galaxy S, however, thinks that I crossed the tennis court, the woods, and a university building.
The funniest thing is that in GPStest, my Hero get about 12-16 meters of precision, while I get about 5-10 with the Galaxy S.
So my issue is that the GPS is not accurate. It is very quick to get a fix so this works well.
images for those without google earth
edit : even better, google map link :
http://maps.google.ca/maps/user?uid=117091360676811642987&hl=fr&gl=ca
increase the sampling rate on the galaxy
go to menu > more > settings > recording
In mytracks? I don't think it's a sampling issue. It is clearly off the path. And I didn't change the sampling rate on the Hero.
My new one came with jh2 and the GPS seems worse than the one I had with the one I had bought back on Aug 6 that came with jg9.
Hello. I wanted to ask if anyone else has had this problem and found a solution. I have searched for the answer, and have tried the solutions I've found (e.g. GPS Status) with limited results.
Since I've been using custom ROMs I can't get Runkeeper to track my runs through to the end. It will start and sometimes not see any signal, but usually it does and simply stops tracking in less than a mile. Sometimes I'll also see the Google maps having trouble, but that manages to recover. I'm currently running CM6 but had the same issues with csrom.
I didn't know what I needed a smart phone for until until the first time I went running with the phone counting time and distance, while listening to an internet radio station. I need that goodness back, even if it means going back to the stock ROM.

I have tried every single GPS fix out there on this forum but my GPS is still not working... inside a building GPS test says that there is no satellite in view.... outside I see about 6 and locks to about 3 or 4....
(But it takes like 5min to lock)...
Is there something wrong with my phone? And btw I'm running cognition rom and I'm rooted.(if this has anything to do with it...

Try the Darky port that uses Da_G's fix. Best GPS experience I've had so far with this phone and the only thing that has realistically improved performance.

my best gps performance has come from two roms
Chronus and Doc's newest rom.
Did you change any supl settings?
For me the supl.google.com settings never worked as well as leaving it @ www.spirent-lcs.com
build = 1007.
I have had great gps since i switched to assonance, latest version of axura worked for me as well, you may want to give them a try, or try their gps settings and modem over cognition.
If that doesn't work you may want to scratch/erase the white contacts of the cover as one post said to maybe increase its signal.
I would return it..you should be able to lock faster than 5 mins and see more than 6 satellites
I agree with fldude... my first one wouldn't see anything. My second one works as well as anyone's. Exchange it.
I really can't return it cause I didn't buy this phone....
So I'm gonna try all the roms... thanks for the info guys

Most of the newer ROM's have GPS fixes built into them
I'm running Assonance's latest build and although it's not perfect - I usually get 8-10 sats in under 15 seconds to lock-on.
I just started using the latest assonance and it has great gps thanks.

Even if it's a gift you can return it, unless of course you've "borrowed" it...
Technically nobody bought this phone... long story..... anyway I'm good with my GPS now

i agree mostly that that using the google server didn't help me at all and the roms you mention are quite good. but i have the bug where the daemon crashes on chronus, but cronus has the ability to lock very very fast on my phone, i have had great luck with captivate builds in general. da_g's files fix the daemon crashing mostly but are not considered a fix. there is still an underlying issue that causes eratic behavior in certain situation. da_g has yet to pin it down but it may be an interference issue.
OP you may have a poor contact at the antenna, some vibrant users were cleaning the contacts for the antenna, there are many antennas and im not sure which is for gps.
also you may want to try with/without backplate, and clean the contacts on that. some users have posted numbers showing marginally better signal without the backplate.
also i have yet to do real testing but anecdotally the old jm9 libraries seem to behave less badly. it still jumps the position around in some situations but it just seems like it jumps less, i will do a mytracks comparison soon. but for the issue the op is having it seems to me that i get faster locks with the newer files, particularly from jj4.
lastly the modem has a great effect on the gps signal. for ability to lock jl3 seems the fastest. but to be honest i think the phone didnt jump the position around as much on jj4 or ji6 which give up hsupa and should be used with the a captivate rom. jk3 and jk4 were also good maybe better with the position jumping thing than jl3.
EDIT: one last thing is to try the gps restore app. i know it says it only resets lbs test mode settings but it also clears "something" that has helped with a bug causing the daemon to crash on my phone(it doesnt crash on every phone like it did on mine) the only other thing that i tried that was able to "fix" that bug was to do a factory reset. clearing gps data never helped. so the error seems to be in data somewhere but is not cleared when you clear gps data in lbs test mode. the samsung app also did not restore my lbs settings to factory so the ad may be mis-informed. i think of it as a easier way to clear gps data which at times yeilds better result, it is not a fix. your experience may vary.
Hy guys, I have a question. Its a known fact that SGS doesnt have good gps but in combination with Dark Core, Darkys rom and this fix http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/guide-gps-quickest-fix-solution.2022/ results are more then satisfied. Yesterday I noticed that whille using app Cardio Trainer my gps was even better. Why? In setting of this app you can chose in which interval will gps scan so i put 1 second. The track that i ride with my bike is shown on google maps and it was flawless and my phone was in the backpack. So i was thinking is there I way to put GPS scaning interval while using (just) google maps also. Because, believe me, while using cardio trainer my gps is more accurate than my previus Nokia 6210 Navigator.
