Need help badly!! unable to connect galaxy s to pc (xp) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I bought my phone 2 days back and have been unable to connect it to my pc since then. I've been to numerous forums, tried different advices bl but still no luck. I like the phone so much and if only I could clear this issue.
System: Windows Xp 2002 SP3
So when I connect my galaxy s with the usb cable my phone shows it's con nected but not the kies.
what I've already done do far:
I installed net frameworks, drivers, pc suite. However the only progress I've made is that I'm able to see samsung phone browser in my computer which is useless as the only thing I can do with that is add contacts for which who needs to connect to the pc anyways. I've already enabled usb debugging and also activated the always ask on usb connection so that I can choose mass storage option.
Please help!! Highly appreciated..

Bitte! Por favor! Please!
Any suggestions
What do I have to do to get my samsung galaxy s connected to my computer (via kies or computer - any would do, as long as I can transfer data from my computer to my phone)

bump! no responses yet

First. Use external mode and forget you ever heard of kies. Kies is evil. I myself never got it to work on my PC's but works on work PC. I can't explain why it works on work PC as it's a Mac running vmware. Only reason to use kies is maybe to sync with outlook to phone butvif you are using Gmail then you Don treally need it. The other thing kies does is auto convert media but it's slow and crap. To update roms Use Odin.

O yeah. To use external mode toto settings/about/USB and select it. If froyo then it's settings/wireless/usb

Hunt down any media files on device with more then 16 letters and rename or del. There's a known bug in kies.

Have you actually downloaded Kies on to yr PC from Samsung? The latest version works reasonably well - I have to keep re-loading the drivers though - single click on one of the Kies options.

Kies doesnt recognize Galaxy Tab (SOLVED)

So I got my tab today. But Win 7 x64 (i have 3 machines with x64 and none with x86 at home) doesnt recognize the device.
There are no drivers in the manager and nothing happens when i choose Kies on the galaxys usb connection menu.
Kies does see that the device is in storage mode, but if i change it to kies connect windows doesnt even give me the plug and play sound. Nothing.
EDIT:
The trouble was the non-stock launcher
Heres what to do if youre having troubles:
1. download Home Switcher from Market and set it to Touchwiz launcher
2. connect to Kies (im using 1.5.3.10092_58_8)
Proceed to root and enjoy!
I have the same problem but your solution does not work for me.
Well that's weird, I have a notebook with Windows 7 x64 and apparently the latest official version of Kies, haven't had a single problem for the Galaxy Tab to be recognized...
I'm not sure which version number I have: I have downloaded Kies on samsung.de, then after the installation I was prompted that an update was available, so I have installed the update of Kies.
Then I have connected the Tab to my computer in Kies mode, the drivers have automatically installed, and Kies recognized my device directly...
Same problem
running on vista 32 the phone isnt didectable trying to unistall the usb drivers and install another recommended one then will sea
Didn't work for me either. Also, btw. Kies is complete crap and does really intrusive stuff. Tmobile garbage apps permanently installed on the device, etc. I don't think I'll ever really understand what the product people think at these companies.
Rant over.
Anybody working on a root that's a little more direct?
Weird. Kies kept saying it didn't recognize the device, but the root app appears to have worked. Need to try an actual root thing to see if its for real.
Whoops. spoke too soon. Didn't actually root.
So just to be sure. It is ok to use Win7 x64 for Kies general use and more importantly to do any future software upgrades?
Its just that win7 is not a supported OS.

I've been using it just fine with Win7 x64 for the last six months or so, for my Galaxy S devices, give or take the usual Kies bull**** that will happen on any OS.
Thanks. I see they just released new software which supports Win7.

Fixed! - Cannot install MTP USB driver
I had a problem when I plugged in my SGT in Kies mode for the first time the MTP driver failed to install and gave an error. Then Kies could not see the Tab.
Fixed it by uninstalling Kies, upgrading Windows Media player to latest version then re-installing Kies.
Read it in a forum somewhere and it worked first time.
Hope it helps someone else
In Ontario Canada with a Bell Galaxy Tab
And... none of the above solutions have worked for me... any other suggestions?
GREAT!!!with this trick finally i can connect my tab to the notebook!!thanks a lot...
I tried to unistall kies, reinstall kies, uninstall driver, reinstall driver, .........
but never Kies recognized my SGT.
But finally I've solved in this way:
- Disable usb debug mode
- Set usb to kies mode
- Lock the screen <-- very important step.If I don't do this, kies doesn't recognize my Tab
- Connect Tab via USB to my Win7 64Bit
- Start Kies
For reference:
I've a SGT rooted and latest version of Kies (2.xxxx).
Hope it helps someone else

How do you set it to kies mode?
Simply, on SGT, go to Settings Menu
tap on wireless --> Usb and then select Kies.
thanks @limonxda, but your suggestion didn't work for me. KIES still doesn't recognize my Tab.
Does anyone have any more suggestions?
I have a verizon GTAB and they seem to have removed the KIES Mode from the selection.
I guess they want us to use their VCast software only.
I ended up fpashing my tab with roto fw and now it connects to kies just fine.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to say thanks for your posting here. I was having trouble getting Kies to recognise my Galaxy Tab. However, after switching back to the Samsung Launcher from LauncherPro, it has recognised my Tab and is installing some large firmware update (hopefully Gingerbread!).
Of course, it would be nice if it told me more specifically what it was updating....
EDIT: Scratch that. An hour of firmware updating and I still seem to be running 2.2. Or specifically, the cryptic firmware version from Kies is:

Samsung Captivate Driver Issues (64-bit Win7)

I used to be able to put my Captivate in USB debugging mode and enable usb storage and move files perfectly. Now that I think about it the last time I did this was before I upgraded the Captivate to Android 2.2. So, I think something happened after upgrading now when I plug my Captivate I get a driver error and it says Code 43. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, but don't think it helped I even tried installing from Kies Mini. I am not really sure what to do here. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I really need to transfer some files from Captivate to PC and vice versa asap.
Thanks,
Mo
You should be able to transfer files without drivers installed.

When I plug it in it says Driver Device Software was not successfully installed. and Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
then USB Device not recognized pops up.
When I go to my computer there is nothing showing my device so how would I begin to transfer files via USB??
Sorry but am still somewhat new to driver issues and android
Not sure, sounds like your computer. Updating the rom won't cause usb errors.
Do you have wireless connection? If so, download FileZilla or some other ftp client to your computer. Then go to the market and download OnAir or some file server. Then you can use the wireless to ftp files back and forth.
That is until you figure out you computer usb troubles.
Yea I'm in the processs of transferring the files via bluetooth, but any advice or at least a place to start for fixing the usb problems. I honestly have had no problems since updating to 2.2 and cannot think of any changes I have made to the computer either
bump can anyone help?
I wish someone would step in here as I am having the exact problem - Win 7 - 64 Pro. All of a sudden the desktop PC has stopped recognizing the Samsung Captivate. It wasn't always this way and I cannot figure what may have changed on the desktop to cause this (except for MSFT updates of course).
win7
BUMP. I just used my home computer (windows xp) and reset my captivate, then rooted and flashed Andromeda. this is the first time i flashed a rom and everything, but everything went smoothly and I would like to try out other roms, but I am only home for 4 months out of the year
I USUALLY have my 64 bit Win 7 laptop, but it is still not recognizing my Captivate. I still cannot even mount it. If anyone can help it'd be greatly appreciated. I tried reinstalling captivate x64 drivers and tried samsung kies mini but no luck. can someone troubleshoot me or send me a step by step walkthrough. I am getting the same errors I have had earlier and like BillMc it wasn't always this way.
BUMP. I got the same issue and it is driving me nuts. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Open Device Manager, plug in your phone, and see what new devices pop up when you plug it in. Then uninstall all "devices" related to the Captivate.
Then unplug your phone and reinstall the captivate drivers pack. Then plug your phone back in and see if your computer sorts out the drivers correctly.
This fixed my issues. Try it.

I9000 cannot connect Kies (backup/restore problem)

First of all, hi to everyone !
As my thread say, I have a problem connecting I9000 to Samsung Kies.
Yesterday night I decided to install on a sgs a new ROM. So first of all the owner ask me to make a backup but with Kies, everything was ok.
Next step was to root the phone using Odin, the step was a succes and after that I made a factory reset and install Tiramisu EVO Summer Edition 6.7 (2.3.4 JVR).
After all (root, install, etc) I try to connect the phone to Samsung Kies and I have the surprise that the phone was recognise by windows, I can browse all files, but I cannot connect with Kies, so first step was to reinstall all Kies drivers and all android, usb, etc drivers.
After 2 hours of installing drivers and a lot of trys I have no positive result but a .SBU file that i search on xda and google and found no alternative soft to open this kind of file. So I am here, looking for some answers between sgs owners who meet too the same issue.
I want to mention that this is not my fist ROM update, but it's the first time I cannot connect to Kies at all !
Any answer it's welcome

I want to mention that on my ex sgs I had Tiramisu too, and it was able to connect. So dono what to say ...
any sugestions? stii no connection ...
After I try a lot of times to connect the I9000 to Kies still no positive result.
So my second plan was to copy all ( contacts, photos, music and videos ) to my i9100 by Kies, after that I put the usb to mass storage and copy all frome I9100 to my laptop and than to i9000.
Conclusion : Kies suck !
Thread closed by my side, problem solved. thanx !
i need to know how to do this! all my backups r on kies
try to reinstall the kies
Alternative to Kies
Contacts: save & sync with Google account, never use phone
Photos: save to external sdcard
Apps: use market app AppBrain
Appointments/calendar: sync with Google account, setup Hotmail as Exchange mail
The Samsung USB drivers are available without installing Kies:

[Q] Kies and LPY (ICS 4.0.3) USB problems?

I turned off usb debugging, but the mass storage I can't turn off: I have to choose between MTP and PTP.
I upgraded Kies to the latsest version, unfortunately no connection.
I tried Kies via Wifi and it works, fine for me.
BUT I prefer Kies via USB. Is there anybody else with the same problem and can help me?
Neither works for me.

Were you able to connect to Kies? I can't. I am not talking about USB mass storage mode, but I want to connect PC Kies with my phone and ever since LPY upgrade I can't. I have stock rom, no root and CWM or anything like that. The PC finds the device GT-N7000, and it works fine in explorer, but Kies can not connect to the phone. It stays in connecting and then it says that there was an error connecting to the device.
Anyone else with LPY that can not connect to Kies for PC?

Me the OP
I am also unable to connect to KIES since performing the ICS update ( via mobile Odin ). I tried USB debug on or off and also Wireless and Network settings different combinations... no go...
Waiting for ideas..
I have just updated Kies and apparently is working.
Date of update appears to be today, 14/05/2012, version 2.3.1.12044_18.
I only use kies to make backups and restore them, but this software is somewhat buggy.

After this I re-downloaded Kies (version 2.3.1.12044_18) and installed it today.
Unfortunately....
I don't understand that some can connect to Kies and some not. I hope there will be an explanation.

I responded to an other thread here which has a similar situation as you have...
anyway, what you should do is completely uninstall kies.. when I say completely, I mean removing it thru the registries (of your computer), folders in Program files or Program files x 86... After removing it, reinstall it again, uncheck and recheck usb debugging in your Phone's settings.
Check if Kies will recognize your phone after... It may take a bit while.. but it will I'm sure, also unplug and re-plug your USB cable to different usb ports on your computer and check which one will automatically connect and detect with your phone.
If your using a PC, it's advisable you plug your phone at the back of your PC (where I think there's a USB port in there), it gives a much stronger signal than the one at the front of your tower or desktop.
Hope this helps...

[Q] Issues instaling drivers in USB debug mode (winxp), can anyone help?

This is partially a Windows support issue, but hopefully someone here has had a similar experience or at least got some good ideas how i can troubleshoot this...
When i plug my Note on my machine if i got USB debugging enabled, Windows starts installing the drivers, but then the device installation thingy freezes (i've tried both just letting it do it's thing automaticly and the add hardware thingy from the control panel, same results), i can't even start the add hardware thingy afterwards (it complains some hardware is still being installed and it can't install more than one at once), Windows won't shutdown afterwards; and if it is plugged with the computer off or remains plugged when rebooting Windows won't finish booting, even if i try to boot in safe mode (but if it isn't plugged while Windows loads the boot goes just fine).
The pc is running WinXP 32bits SP3 (in brazilian portuguese if that matters), and the Note still got the factory's Gingerbread UBKK3 (not rooted yet). Feel free to ask for any additional information you believe i can provide that could help you help me figure this out.
Any ideas how i can figure out what is going wrong here?
ps:before anyone suggests it, no, reformatting the PC is not somthing i'd be willing to consider at the moment; and unless there is no drivers avaiable for WinXP i definitly don't wanna downgrade to 7, much less Vista.

If Kies is installed and up to date then you don't need any further drivers.
Might be worth un installing Kies and samsung usb drivers, reboot, download Kies again and install, reboot. Make sure you're connecting the phone in the rear (motherboard) usb ports and see how it works from there.
Is it just the phone that causes this issue, or other usb devices also?

I already tried uninstalling and reinstaling Kies as well as the "devices" that get installed when i plug the note; things still go screwy if i try plugging my Note with USB debugging mode activated.
Perhaps i'm not explaining this right. What i call "installing drivers" is what windows does when you plug a new device; i'm not talking about just having the files avaiable, but actually setting things up to use the device.
Btw, it seems Windows doesn't recognize the Note as the same device with and without the USB debug mode, it installs more than one of some of the "virtual" devices; i noticed it 'cause it installs a "Samsung Mobile USB Modem #2" after i try to plug the device both with the USB debug mode disabled, and with it enabled (had to do that trick to show unplugged devices to actually see both the plain USB Modem and the USB Modem #2 at the same time, but the fact there was a #2 being installed clued me it had another one it still counted as being present)
A small update: I might've found a lead on what is going on; according to Wikipedia
Noting that the latest (as of 2012/09/02) driver version Samsung Android ADB driver 2.9.503.726 is broken (blue screen), and once installed fails to recognise Samsung devices ('Manufacturer Hardware ID missing'). This is supplied as part of Kies.

I can't say exactly what the problem is, but had you seen that Gingerbread has USB options in 3 different places in the Settings menus?
- Location and Security, Disable USB debugging mode;
- Applications , USB Debugging;
- Wireless and network, USB utilities, Connect storage to PC (button).
I found you have to play around with those to get the connection working properly. I also found it's not a good idea to try to use Kies and Samsung drivers together on one PC. There's quite a lot about these issues on this thread and links therefrom. Hope this helps.
i got an issue regarding Usb mode too @@
recently i upgrade Note to blackCNA v2.1 and i can't "turn on usb" neither "turn off usb". when i stick Note to the computer, it's showed as "portable media player".
i've tried installing and uninstalling then reinstalling everything, from Kies to samsung usb driver, then reboot, then do it in another laptops, but it doesn't work @@
what can i do to fix it now @@

Do i need to uninstall Kies, or just kill all Kies* processes before plugging it in? (i think i already tried both, i'm not gonna try again unnecessarily 'cause when it freezes the driver installation thingy, Windows won't shutdown (it freezes after a while before finishing the process) and i'm forced to go for the physical power switch; i already had some bad experiences with HDDs developing an increased amount of bad blocks during similar circumstances in the past so i don't feel quite comfortable having to cut the power before the OS says it is ok if i have a choice)
Whether you use Kies or Samsung drivers really depends on what you want to do with your device. Kies lets you synchronise your contacts, agenda, etc. with Outlook on your computer. On the other hand if you are going to work on your device's software (rooting, flashing, modifying, (de-)odexing or even just transferring files) then you're better off with Samsung drivers. See this post for a download link. If you read the posts around this one, you will see how Chasmodo stresses the importance of completely getting rid of Kies before installing the Samsung drivers.
I would recommend you completely clean your PC of all drivers, Kies or Samsung drivers (software and registry) with your Note completely disconnected from it. There should be no yellow-triangle devices or anything like that in your PC device list, and your PC should be rebooting normally again. Next install either Samsung drivers or Kies, depending on what you want to do, with the Note still not connected and only when they're comfortably installed and your PC is still working and rebooting properly, reconnect your Note and let the PC detect and finish the installation.
Kies in particular is quite temperamental so it may take a bit of playing around before everything is set up for a sync if that's what you want to do.
