Hi Everyone,
I recently puchased a Vibrant from Bell mobility, successfully unlocked it and was using it on Bell. In areas of poor connection whenever I used the data, the network would drop completely and I'd see the circle with the line through it where my network connection is. The voice bars will come back most of the time quite quickly, but data can stay offline for sometime then randomly pop back up.
I've found this happens the most when I'm in doors.
Has anyone else using an unlocked Bell Vibrant on Telus experience the same problems?
I've done hard resets, cleared out all programs, etc. I even went to Bell and returned the handset for a new one. I'm still experiencing the issue on this new handset with absolute no added programs on it.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Have the same problem.
The workaround for it seems to be doing the 850 trick. Call quaility is a little worse, but, no dropped calls anymore.
I think it is a telus thing, the way the phone tries to find the reception.
Hey kintap, thanks for the quick response.
I'm not experiencing dropped calls (yet), but when I'm using the internet indoors all connections just drop off and I have to wait for the connections to come back.
It mostly happens when I'm using the browser.
Was your problem similar?
I'll try out the 850 trick.
@meandnotyou are you also in Edmonton/Calgary area?
Telus people on GTA / Vancouver area don't seem to have as much trouble as you guys over at Edmonton/Calgary
that's according to the feedback found in the forum
Hey AllGamer, I'm from Vancouver.
I've tried changing the 850 trick as mentioned and it seems to have been ok since then. I'll keep testing and let you guys know.
It's not just a Telus thing... I'm on Bell in Vancouver and have the same issue as well.
I'm also one of those who are experiencing the comatose problem too.
I believe it's mainly a software issue where the phone has trouble locking on the signals. (I haveny seen any users who unoffically updated to froyo reporting these problems, yet).
edit: deleted.

+1. same exact problem here. On Bell. Lose signal indoors @ home.. experiencing comatose problem, usually when there is no signal. 850 trick doesn't seem to work for me. Re-flashed to JH2, factory wipe. *#272*imei# trick, etc.. all started a week ago. was working perfectly for 1st month. seems to be getting worse/more frequent.
anyone want to buy my SGS?

Wow that sucks. I was gonna wipe my phone earlier too, but read that it doesn't help...
Have you tried getting a new SIM card from Bell? When you did the 850 trick, did you double just that it was just the 850 that was selected? You can try what I selected, after selecting just only the WCDMA 850, go into the combi band and select the GSM 850 band too, that way it has a "backup". Hope this helps you if you haven't tried it already

Hey Louie604. Thanks i'll try it now. I'm a noob to Android. did the 805 trick work for you? if that doesn't work, I'll try asking for a new SIM card. When I'm outdoors, signal is strong and I have no freezing problems - only when indoors and poor signal. in Van as well.

Yea, the 850 trick worked for me (improved battery life while idling too).
Currently I'm testing just the 1900 band to see if it still locks up on me, but I won't know till I get home. I'll be posting my results in the comatose topic
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775017
Also, I should mention, when you're setting the band, make sure you do it under the service mode, otherwise the settings don't save (from what I read).
This was the instructions I followed...
1. on the key pad, type *#*#197328640#*#*
2. Select [1] Debug Screen
3. Select [8] Phone control
4. Select [7] Network control
5. Select [2] Band selection
6. Select [2] WCDMA band []
7. Select [6] WCDMA 850
After doing the above steps, just go into the "Combi Band" and select the "GSM 850" also... just in case it ever needs to fall back
Louie604, thanks. ok I think I may have missed something. In step 7 above, I have WCDMA 850 (FDD V) option under [5] not [6]. there is no [6]. As well, after *#0011#, I see that I'm still under WCDMA 1900 band 2, even after following your steps above. I double checked my band selection settings and they were saved. Does this mean anything?

Sorry, yes it it under [5]. (I just copied and pasted it but never paid attention to the fine details )
That's strange tho. Perhaps try this:
1) Select [1] Automatic
2) Go Back and then go into [4] Combi Bands and check to see that all are selected EXCEPT for [7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[] (It doesn't select it for me and I assume the same for you since you're in Vancouver too)
3) Go back and select [2] WCDMA Band []
4) Select [5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*] (It should then say it's selected and when you go back, it should be the only one with the [*])
5) Go back out to the "Band Selection" menu and select [4] Combi Bands []
6) Select GSM 850 [] -- When you go back after selecting it, you should see in the list this:
Code:
[1] GSM 850 [*]
[2] GSM 900 [ ]
[3] DCS 1800 [ ]
[4] PCS 1900 [ ]
[5] WCDMA 2100 (FDD I)[ ]
[6] WCDMA 1900 (FDD II)[ ]
[7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[ ]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
Once you see those, you may simple exit out and then check again. If anything you can turn on airplane mode and then back off or restart you phone and see if it's at the 850 band.
Hope this helps
Got it. Thanks.
Hey guys,
Just wanted to give an update. Since I did the band change using the 850 trick (same day I made the original post), I haven't experienced any complete network drops or comatose issues.
I am now traveling though and finding the connection to be lacking. I imagine it's because I've hard set the band, so reverting while traveling to see if it has any effect.
Hi Guys,
I am new to the Galaxy S Vibrant and while I love the phone I can't get 8 hours on a charge. I've played around with the Doc Froyo XWJPA v7.6.2 / XXJPO v7.6.2 ROM (the one for North America) and maxed out at about 4 hours and now I'm on [ROM][FROYO] Tayutama Edition v1.0.2 (I9000) and max out at about 8 hours.
I need a ROM that is going to last me at least the work day. I'm coming off a 3GS that could do a whole day no problem.
As far as usage goes, I receive email all day long, off and on wifi (3G whole time), make a few calls, receive a few texts and spend a bit of time on the browser.
The problem I have is that the phone is dead before my work day is over.
Any suggestions? I'm open to either a new ROM or a different 2.2 phone altogether.
I'm doing my best NOT to buy the iphone 4 and I don't want to hear anything about not having a lot of apps, having to use battery programs, etc. All that is doing is making excuses for the phone and not helping me find the solution.
If it makes a diff I'm on Rogers in Ontario.
Thanks!
I tried a few combinations too, the best one i have now without use of a battery saver program gave me at least 16 hours of use, and with the saving above 24 hours of use, and even 2 days standby.
I think i have a mix running atm, since a few methods of flashing didn't succeed.
Check my signature, i also ran a ryanza lagfix + ext2
Filenames i used:
Phone : CF-Root-JP6-v1.2-Busybox-1.17.1.tar
CSC : GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJP2.tar
PDA : JP6_JP4_U_JPM.tar
So far so good
PS: Unplugged 7 hours ago, battery at 86%
Usage :
30m WiFi, 2m Call, 20m game, sent around 16 messages, 10m configuring,5m customizing looks (again)

Easiest way, flash only the modem. JPM, is meant to use less than JPP with DATA use.
Next step if that doesn't work, forget about flashing an entire new ROM, besides you prob don't want to do that and it's an inconvenience.
Just flash Speedmod Froyo through ODIN if you don't have CWR setup.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756.
speedmod-kernel-i1_2-250hz-r2-CWM is pretty good and stable.
It's the place to see what is up with battery life! Hardcore is working hard at it, is very dedicated and helpful.

True, but JPD should use even less power... don't know if GPS still is as good as with JPP or JPM..

Very true, have been using that kernel all day now (yeah i change kernels very often ) and my battery is still 67% after a whole day work..
Use Doc's JPO 7.6.2 with speedmod and JPP modem, all tweaks ON and ext4 fs
My only advise to you would be to switch the auto updares on gmail / tweetdeck to 1 hour as opposed to 15 minutes.
Also i keep data network mode disabled.
My battery is rubbish still but i can get about 14 hours.
I do use the phone heavily though, so I am sure if I don't use it I would get a lot of standby

In my experience it does help a lot to do a clean 2.2 install via kies and flash a slim rom like docs over it. Then hardcores 200 hz kernel with activeted tweaks but no lagfix. I need to restart the phone every 2 or three days and if lag persists lagfix and unlagfix it to repartition rfs. This gives me more than two days of usage, sometimes up to 4. Oh and use advanced task killer on agressive settings! The phone is smooth, no need for a lagfix for me, especially not for the price of heavy battery drain

You are doing something wrong... I've been on 7.6.2 and previous variants for a long while now.. Battery life has never been an issue. You are in canada like me so you have a Galaxy S i9000m. Long story short, I've got the same phone, stock JPP modem that comes with doc's rom. No battery life issues what so ever and I use my phone ALL day since its synched to my work's webmail and we get +/- 50-200 emails a day and its set on push notification polling.
Anyways, the trick is to find what works for you but I have a feeling there's something you aren't doing right if you are getting battery life THAT bad.

What am I doing wrong? I'm not sure what mistake I could have made? The phone works fine so I didn't mess up in flashing anything. I've been on multiple ROMS that have all worked... so my process is fine.
I just need to find a ROM that isn't killing my battery with some mysterious silent background process or figure out if my battery/phone is defective in someway.
This morning before I took my phone off the charger I enabled lag fix in the CWR program and only managed to get about 4 hours on my current ROM.
I need this phone for work and like you I receive 100+ emails per day. My iphone was fine (as was my BB) but this android is not cutting it. I just need to find a good rom or decide that this phone is not up to the job.
A lot of my friends who came from the 3GS swears that the SGS lasts significantly longer in terms of battery life while having the same things pushed, you probably have more things going on with your SGS as compared to your 3GS before thats why the battery life is worse on your end.
On average I can get 7-8hrs of HD movie time before my phone goes off so that 4h battery life of yours is doing something that draining the battery faster than a screen time of 8hrs.
I have a very technical solution..
Buy a spare battery! Or even the ugly ass battery backplate. If you want to be able to use the phone non stop and not worry about battery then no matter how much rom/configuration tweaking there is the simple fact is that this display eats battery.. for breakfast lunch and dinner.. so find a battery solution rather than a rom solution.
I brought a second battery and if i have to go out for an extended period of time and i know my phone use will be heavy i take it.. simples..

are you using a facebook account or something like that too? or just a google account only? sounds like you've got some rogue app going nuts. also, check your display settings. switch off all animations and auto brightness. set the brightness down low.
did you do a full battery cycle btw and reset the battery stats?

This sounds like something my girlfriend did with her SGS. I taught her how to use Mobile AP and she loved it, however she didn't understand that she needed to switch it off and her battery would last about 7-8 hours.
Please check this isn't enabled as this drains battery considerably.
There is this thing called spare battery.
Or try speedmode with support of down to 200Mhz all the roms with ext4 will drain faster ext2 is said to be same as RFS
Actually I have more of another question than a solution here...
I'm speculating if the same modem would react differently against different telco providers out there. I'm residing in Malaysia and using DIGI as my telco provider. What was claimed by this forum (12/14/16 hours) of standby is unheard of despite changing different roms and tweaks.
What I realised was when I go 3G or 3.5G the battery gets drained like an open faucet - however, EDGE and WIFI is still ok. Perhaps the telco here uses different hardwares and requires my device to work extra hard to obtain 3G signals ? I don't know. Someone who have experienced this may actually help answer this side of the story though.
Hi, I had an problem with fast battery drainage as well. I believe I traced it to the bands that the phone was trying to access. I am also on Rogers.
Go to the dialpad, enter *#2263# to enter BAND SELECTION.
There are four choices. Try to get them to look like this:
[1] AUTOMATIC []
[2] WCDMA BAND [*]
[3] GSM BAND []
[4] COMBI BANDS []
Under [2] WCDMA BAND, should aim for:
[1] WCDMA ALL[]
[2] WCDMA 2100(FDD I)[]
[3] WCDMA 1900(FDD II)[*]
[4] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII) []
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
Under [3] GSM BAND[], only [2] GSM 850[*] is selected.
Under [4] COMBI BANDS[], selected items are 1, 6, 8 as below:
[1] GSM 850 [*]
[2] GSM 900[]
[3] DCS1800[]
[4] PCS1900[]
[5] WCDMA 2100 (FDD I)[]
[6] WCDMA 1900 (FDD II)[*]
[7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
I'm no expert, but using the battery history service menu:
*#*#4636#*#*
it seemed that the phone was using up spending a lot of time searching on bands that Rogers wasn't using. Before I made these changes, under BAND SELECTION, my phone had
[1] AUTOMATIC [*] selected.
As well, under [2] WCDMA BAND[], looked like this:
[1] WCDMA ALL[]
[2] WCDMA 2100(FDD I)[*]
[3] WCDMA 1900(FDD II)[*]
[4] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII) [*]
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
and under [3]GSM BAND[]:
[1]GSM ALL[]
[2]GSM 850[*]
[3]GSM 900[*]
[4]GSM 1800 [*]
[5]PCS 1900[*]
[4] COMBI BANDS[]:
[1] GSM 850 [*]
[2] GSM 900[*]
[3] DCS1800[*]
[4] PCS1900[*]
[5] WCDMA 2100 (FDD I)[*]
[6] WCDMA 1900 (FDD II)[*]
[7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[*]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
Here's how I changed it:
1. make sure that under BAND SELECTION [1]AUTOMATIC[*] is selected.
2. select [4]COMBI BANDS, make sure all the bands are selected. If any are missing, such as [8]WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[], just click on them to add, and you'll see "Add WCDMA_W850[*] If you want to add other bands in present bands, choose band that you want again". Use menu key, then select "back", then back out in to the main band selection screen again.
3. select [2]WCDMA BAND[] submenu. You should see:
[1] WCDMA ALL[]
[2] WCDMA 2100(FDD I)[*]
[3] WCDMA 1900(FDD II)[*]
[4] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII) [*]
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
4. select [5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]. Should see: Select WCDMA_W850 Only [*]. back out (menu, back). Now should see:
[1] WCDMA ALL[]
[2] WCDMA 2100(FDD I)[]
[3] WCDMA 1900(FDD II)[]
[4] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII) []
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
5. back out to BAND SELECTION again. Should look like this:
[1] AUTOMATIC []
[2] WCDMA BAND [*]
[3] GSM BAND []
[4] COMBI BANDS []
enter [4]COMBI BANDS[], should look like:
[4] COMBI BANDS[]:
[1] GSM 850 []
[2] GSM 900[]
[3] DCS1800[]
[4] PCS1900[]
[5] WCDMA 2100 (FDD I)[]
[6] WCDMA 1900 (FDD II)[]
[7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
This is showing that your phone will only seek service on WCDMA 850, which Rogers happens to use.
You can back out with menu, back, menu, end at this point, and check what band your phone is using:
To check what band your phone is using, from the dialpad, *#0011#. You could, for example, restrict your phone to WCDMA 850 and see if it can pick up a signal.
I went back and added, under COMBI BANDS, items [1] and [6] as previously mentioned above:
[1] GSM 850 [*]
[2] GSM 900[]
[3] DCS1800[]
[4] PCS1900[]
[5] WCDMA 2100 (FDD I)[]
[6] WCDMA 1900 (FDD II)[*]
[7] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII)[]
[8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
I noticed that when I added these bands under [4]COMBI BANDS, that [2]WCDMA BAND[*] changed to:
[1] WCDMA ALL[]
[2] WCDMA 2100(FDD I)[]
[3] WCDMA 1900(FDD II)[*]
[4] WCDMA 900 (FDD VIII) []
[5] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[*]
I notice that my phone will sometimes use 850 and sometimes 1900 on Rogers.
Again, I'm not sure if this will help you, but it might be worth a shot. The battery history screen is also useful *#*#4636#*#* and checking partial wake usage and network usage since last unplugged to see which programs are using most of the battery. It was from this that I figured out the dialer was using a lot of the battery. It could also be some other network intensive programs such as a twitter client.
Please report back as I'm interested to know if this helps at all. Cheers!
The battery meter isn't lying when it says the Display is using 90% of your battery. Changing the sync intervals doesn't make that much of a difference to me - the real difference its the amount of time the screen is on and the brightness its set to.
I'm using Docs V6 JP6 Rom and I easily get a full day of use. I'm only using the 850 band though and nothing else. My brightness never goes above 38% either.
My best case broken down is this...
Phone on for 29hrs.
3hrs actual screen on time.
48min of talk time.
and misc stuff the rest of the time.
Right now I'm at...
36% remaining, 14.5hrs since unplugged, 1hr talk time and 1hr 17min screen on.
Keep an eye on your reported "Time without signal", that will nuke your battery very quickly. If you run a 2.1 modem file with froyo you may get 100% "Time without signal", that's no good.
I'm currently using CM 6.1.2 on my Milestone.
If I switch to 2G mode in the mobile network settings, I have no connection.
If I use the Toggle 2G app, it doesn't seem to really do anything. If I set 2G to use one of the options that don't disconnect me (WCDMA, CDMA or GSM 2g/3g) it still shows 3G in the status bar so I'm not sure what the point is in using the Toggle 2G app.
Wondering the same thing myself...
Does anyone knows the answer?

I am not certain about this (i use rogers), but i believe that telus has no 2G (edge) network. They built a 3G only network just in time for the olympics to replace their cdma network:
So the toggler probably cant find a valid connection and retries 3G.
Manual mode cant find a network at all.
On rogers, i can fallback to 2g. This is normal according to what i think i know.

thanks for the info.
That's what I thought so have given up on the idea of getting 2g to work
I guess when it comes to 3g and saving battery life, juice defender will have to do as it can turn off data when the screen is off but still have the phone working.
Well, I think I made some progress with this.
On my phone, I was also loosing the connection when switching from 3G to 2G but it's working now. I can get calls, it's only the data aver 2G that doesn't work now.
I have the Cronos rom on my phone, I can tell you what I did if you're interested.
Yes please do.
If it works on cm6 then at least I can also save juice by not using juice defender... oh the irony... lol

Took me a lot of time to find the right switches combination.
Anyway, I have Toggle 2G auto managing the 2G/3G and for the bottom 2 options:
2G network: WCDMA preferred (3G/2G)
3G network: GSM auto (PRL)(2G/3G)
If I check under Setting/About/Phone/Status, I see written mobile network type UMTS.
Hmm... I had those 2 settings reversed when using toggly2g
I will try that.
Right now, my mobile network type shows up as HSPA.
Your post prompted me to find the difference and came up with these 2 useful pages just before my head exploded.

Well, I think I made some progress with this.
On my phone, I was also loosing the connection when switching from 3G to 2G but it's working now. I can get calls, it's only the data aver 2G that doesn't work now.
I have the Cronos rom on my phone, I can tell you what I did if you're interested.

Not sure but I don't think so. You can turn off the data but have the phone connected to the 3G network, right?
I think you could get data over 2G but it's just very slow, right?
With Telus I don't think they allow data over 2G.
zeppelinrox, I wonder why yours shows like this, what do you have active under those settings?
What ROMs are you guys using?

When I'm on 2G it shows as UMTS
With 3G (mobile data enabled) I see it alternating from 3G/UMTS to H/HSPA.
I'm on CM6.
My phone always shows HSPA except if I set it to use 2G then it shows GPRS - which is when I have no data and no phone signal.
I did use the Telus baseband file in AOR though... I wonder how it will behave if I use the Canada baseband....
Also, here's a neat trick....
dial *#*#4636#*#*
A Testing App will show up....
Select Phone Information and then goto the bottom.
You can set your preferred Network type.
Ok so that listbox shows all the different options.
The only options that will save are:
GSM only (2g - I get nothing - shows as GPRS)
WCDMA only (3g - shows as HSPA)
GSM auto (PRL) - (3g - shows as HSPA as well)
All the other options either are not selectable or just revert back to GSM auto (as is the case with WCDMA preferred)
I just did a few speed tests and I seem to get faster speeds with GSM auto than I do with WCDMA only
Gonna try that Canada baseband now....
Edit: Same thing. Except the speed test is slower for both WCDMA and GSM autio so best off using the Telus baseband.
The dial trick doesn't work. I dial the sequence as a phone number, right?
It disappears then nothing changes.
ah.. yeah sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries...
do you use adw launcher?
If so, you can actually create a shortcut for it... I figured it out today.
1 Press and hold on homescreen and select Custom shortcut
2 Press "Pick your activity"
3 Select the second item on the list ie. Activities (with the ADW icon)
4 Wait for all stuff to load, scroll down to Settings, and press the arrow next to it to see the long list of activites that Settings.apk can do.
5 Scroll down near the end of the list, you will see Testing(.TestingSettings)
6. Select that and press OK on the next window.
I also made one for Battery History, which is actually part of the Testing app but is usually only accessible through Spare Parts.
I still can't get the trick to work... doesn't do anything on my phone
Right now I'm on the 2501 rom (latest 2.2.1 from Motorola) and I can say it's the best I've tested so far!
Outstanding battery life!
I found another way to run Testing App.
With Google gesture search you can set it to launch Settings actions
Let it scan and then write "testing" on the screen
Edit: oh crap I mistyped the code.
Its *#*#4636#*#*
I had 4536 before so I fixed it

I'm currently using CM 6.1.2 on my Milestone.
If I switch to 2G mode in the mobile network settings, I have no connection.
If I use the Toggle 2G app, it doesn't seem to really do anything. If I set 2G to use one of the options that don't disconnect me (WCDMA, CDMA or GSM 2g/3g) it still shows 3G in the status bar so I'm not sure what the point is in using the Toggle 2G app.

Well, after doing some more tests and trying different apps (2G/3G switchers) I can say those apps work only if your cell phone company has both 2G/3G network.
In Montreal, only Rogers has both.
Easy to test (btw: I'm using the FroyoMOD rom): go in "Settings" -> "Wireless & Networks" -> "Mobile Network Settings" and check "Use only 2G networks".
See if your cell phone company is listed when you do a search under "Network Operators". If it's not, don't bother using a 2G/3G switcher.
When doing this, in Montreal I see only Rogers listed. If I uncheck "Use only 2G networks" I see all 3 of them: Bell, Telus and Rogers.
Hope this helps!
I don't get the greatest battery life with HSDPA enabled, I also only get 1-3 bars which I know isn't helping my battery life at all.
I tried this below.
Enter the Phone app.
Dial *#*#197328640#*#*
Select [1] DEBUG SCREEN
Select [8] PHONE CONTROL
Select [4] UE STATE CONTROL
If you want 2G, select:
[3] CHANGE RAT TO GSM
If you want 3G, select:
[2] CHANGE RAT TO WCDMA

It works, I get 4-5 bars w/ EDGE. But when I get a phone call and talk on the phone. Weird things happen. Suddenly my phone mutes and the backlight turns off and on. This doesn't happen when it's set to 3G.
I tried this one below.
Dial *#*#2263#*#* (mnemonic: *#*#BAND#*#* for band selection)
Select [3] GSM BAND
Select [1] GSM ALL
Select "Select GSM All Bands"
Menu key > END
Click to collapse
But it doesn't allow me to change anything. I get some "RAT is blocked" or something message.
Not sure what to do, any suggestions? Details of my phone are in my sig.
Update.
It's still not sticking on GSM mode. It just switches itself back to 3G. That's without turning it off or turning on Airplane mode.
Are you running a ROM or kernel? If you are have you tried switching the ROM or using a different Modem to see if that helps you?

Running the stock 2.2 ROM w/ SpeedMOD kernel.
I would flash another modem, but two things.
1. can't seem how to do so.
2. it seems that there is only one ROM that will work. and it's the stock one installed. unless i go to a i9000 based ROM that has many different modems.

To disable hspa. Hspa adds some drain, but what can really kill battery is if the signal isn't good enough to reliably hold am hspa connection and it switches back and forth constantly. .

Yeah, when I switch it to GSM mode. I get 4-5 bars, but whenever I get a phone call. It wants to switch itself back to 3G.
I've used that code to turn off HSDPA, but it continues to say so in the Status menu. Not sure what's going on lol.
Hi,
I was wondering if we can turn off hsdpa to save battery life, i used to have a Captivate and we used this secret menú to disable hsdpa, leaving only the 3G which consume less battery than Hdspa and is faster than 2G, but i can not find this menú on my nexus 4, someone knows how to do it?
This is the link to Samsung Galaxy where they shows how to do it:

[REF] WORKING: How to disable HSPA / HSDPA for better battery life
Hi people.
One way to get longer battery life is to disable HSPA and just use 3G. 3G (UMTS) is not as slow as EDGE/GPRS but doesn't use as much power as HSPA.
Here's a quick comparison of *typical* download speeds:
GPRS: 48 kbit/s, EDGE: 150-200 kbit/s, 3G: 384 kbit/s, HSDPA: 1000 kbit/s
After some searching, I've found a method that actually works for our Galaxy S:
Go to the phone dialer pad and enter this code: *#301279#
Click [2] CHANGE HSPA REVISION
Click [1] RELEASE 99 (HSPA OFF)
Then you should see something like:
CHANGE_R99
HSDPA OFF, HSUPA OFF
Done!
Press the BACK button to exit, or press MENU button then END.
The setting should take effect shortly after you exit the menu. To be sure that the setting take effect, toggle Flight/Airplane mode.
You could store that number in your phone book or speed dial for a quick way to toggle HSPA.
The setting STAYS ACROSS REBOOTS!
If you want to enable HSPA again just go back to the same menu and choose [3] RELEASE 6 (HSDPA/HSUPA).
Just tested it with the XXJPP radio and it really works.
Longer battery life at last!
Quick way is Settings-More-Mobile Networks- Use Only 2g.
Better way is to install a toggle control app that let's you do it in one touch.

Thx, But 2G Its too slow, with this method the Hsdpa is off but the 3G still working so Its faster, but Looks like lg doesnt have this option or i can not find it.... Jet
HSPA is 3g

Try this code:
*#*#4636#*#* :good:
Yeah the main way is to check "use 2g only" which would give you edge only and may save battery but yes it is very slow.
There is also a toggle 2g app which makes it more convenient, or you can use tasker.
Based on what I've read on the forums I'm pretty sure HSPA is 3g. In which case theres no in between.. if you go through the dialer menu you can choose wcdma/gsm which is 3g/2g. We're used to thinking hspa is 4g but its actually 3g since true 4g is actually LTE. Confusing, I know.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
HSPA/HSDPA is enhanced 3G. Sometimes referred to as 3G+. It is faster than 3G, but not near as fast as LTE, which is true 4G. I speak mainly for the AT&T network because I spent a lot a time with this on my HTC Inspire. AT&T invested a bit of money enhancing their backhaul to accommodate HSPA. I lived in a marginal area where my Inspire was typically on 3G but, by design of the device, was constantly searching and switching to HSPA and back and forth. This constantly drained my battery and caused dropped calls because it was switching towers when doing this. I ended up having to place a microcell in my home to alleviate this, since there was no way to do it thru the device. I'm not sure how my N4 would act today because I still use that microcell.
The OP was asking how to turn off HSPA. In the context of this phone, that's 3G. The next step down is Edge.

HSDPA has no more battery drain than 3G...
3G is not HSDPA, is UMTS. HSDPA is 3G+.

True that. Considering this is considered a developers phone that is unlocked and unbranded, I'm a bit surprised at the limited band selection.
It's a 5 band GSM phone, what more would you want? Other than LTE, obviously, we've done THAT discussion to death
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I was referring to the ability to select the bands. When I go into the hidden test menu and try to select a radio band, I get a message that states "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped". And yes I know this was done intentionally to hide the LTE band. My point was that I consider that somewhat odd. That is all. With previous phones I found the ability to switch bands useful for signal tests in my area, even though I couldn't always make them stick.
THANK YOU. I can finally enjoy fast (Fast enough for my needs) internet without the blackhole drain of HSPA+. 3g, UMTS, does not drain as much as HSPA+.

It's probably an NV Item in the Qualcomm radio. You would just need to find what value it needs, put the N4 into "modem" mode, and use NV Item editor or similar to change the value.
turn the data and gps off ,.turn down screen brightness, then you will found very long battery life for you
