I tried this and all GPS and compass issues are now fixed. GPS locks on accurately in just a few seconds.
***This fix may not work if you live outside of USA.***
##You can play with the settings if you want to. If you FUBAR your GPS a simple factory reset will return your setting to default. You can do this without going into recovery buy going to Settings / Privacy / Factory data reset.##
Edit:
***************************************************************
Tested Procedure:
1 - Disable "Use Wireless Networks" - Settings / Location & Security
2 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
3 - Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]
5 - REBOOT
6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"

Original settings:
Operation Mode: Standalone

Port: 7275

Optional New Fix:
1 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
2 - Go outside to get an unimpeded GPS fix.
3 - Choose Delete GPS Data button.
4 - Choose Get Position Test button. Let it run for 3 min or until you have 10 to 12 Sat locks and back out.
Thanks goes to Onlyloki for this method.
You may want to do this in conjunction with the first procedure and then do the optional if the first procedure did not work for you. I did both and my GPS is locking even faster. Let me know what you think...
Just some more info I dug up:
Quote from http://www.vzwdevelopers.com/aims/public/menu/lbs/LBSFAQ.jsp
"In MS-Based mode, the network provides the satellite information to the device, based on a rough estimate of where the device is located, and the device acquires the GPS signals from the satellites and calculates its location. After the initial fix, the device operates like an autonomous GPS receiver, until the satellite information must be refreshed, at which time the device goes back to the network to update the satellite information. MS-Based mode is appropriate for applications that require the device location to be updated rapidly, such as a navigation application. Can the GPS work in autonomous mode? No, the GPS receiver requires the assistance of the network elements to acquire its initial location fix."
With the rapid updating we could see an increased drain on the battery. I have not confirmed that yet. If anyone can let us know.
Edit #2:
I was informed by a sales rep at T-Mobile that Samsung is aware of the issue and is going to fix the GPS and the compass issue in their first update.

Mine were working ok, but compass was all over the place. After fix it was alot faster locking in and compass was fine. Noticed it using skymap, layer, etc...
fix worked great for me. All I need it to be semi close and this makes the lock within seconds. Before I couldnt even get a lock.. Awesome XDA

I dont want to do this and then if it doesnt work i cant revert
Don't you lose out on better accuracy by disabling wireless networks?

What are your settings set to?
Also check out a compass app and skymap are they throwing you all over?
I'm curious.
This is a shining example of what makes it great to be an Android phone owner, the outstanding community support that XDA has is second to none in my opinion, even to carrier/vendor support. My Vibrant should be arriving Tuesday or Wednesday (can't wait). I used to have Sapphire, then switched to the HD2 because I'm bound to T-Mobile and Windows Mobile was more horrible than I could have imagined. I can't wait to see CM6 with Froyo on the Vibrant...makes my mouth water thinking about it. Thanks again for the great work.

compass and skymap ARE acting strange... guess the nav was working because i happened to get a quick gps fix? i'll choose to believe that over the possibility i could have jinxed myself by saying i had no problems...
i have noticed that the battery drain is much higher (like abnormaly so) if you have the gps toggled on through tw and have something like beautiful widgets on...
would something like the QuickGPS app on HD2 solve some of these problems? anyone familiar with that app and what it does?
I did this *fix* and it killed my GPS.
so, I have reverted back to normal.
I noticed I'm getting a much better GPS lock in maps. The problem with skymap appears to be unrelated to GPS and appears to be something with the compass. On my G1, it tracked as I turned it with fairly precise accuracy. With the vibrant, it has a 5-6 second delay on tracking movement on the horizontal (up and down tracking in near perfect). However, the compass app seems to function just fine in that regard, oddly enough.

Same here. The compass was not affected by this fix, it is still acting like garbage.
The GPS does lock faster now, but before this it was working reasonably.

I will remove compass fix from my title. I saw an improvement but can not prove this fix will correct the compass issue.
Thought I'd chime in here.
With the default settings my GPS and compass seemed to be working fine, but I thought I'd check these new settings out. I have since reverted back to the original settings b/c the change actually made my GPS less accurate and my compass seemed to get a little funky.
GPS: Original settings is showing my exact location; down to the actual room in the house. New settings I wasn't even on the correct street!
Compass: Original settings in Skymap the compass is steady. Once it finds it self it sits there. New settings the map was rotating without me moving.
Figured this would be helpful to those out there who's GPS/compass seems to be working fine with the stock settings!

Just out of curiosity what are your original settings set to?
The same listed by the OP. I checked them before I made any changes.

Hi
Google map navigation is barely usable with my Bell Galaxy S i9000M Vibrant.
It seems that the error on the position is so big that it often think that I am on the next street.
I read various gps "fixes" on these forum. Is there one that actually work?
you are the first i read using JH2 to have this problem
most people are fine with JH2
did you change the default stock GPS settings?
where about are you?
it works fine in toronto GTA all the way to ottawa/quebec and back
try using a better GPS program like CoPilot or many of the Opensource freewares available for android
Quebec city. Could you give me what settings you have in the *#*#1472365#*#* gps setting application? I remember I changed one setting to get AGPS working... maybe it was a bad idea.
thanks for your help. I don't think the problem is google's software however. It works well on my HTC Hero. With my Galaxy S I get a "big circle" arround my position which means that the position is not precise.

thanks, are you in "MS Based" or "standalone" mode?
according to my screenshots they it's on standalone
thanks, will try it (However I didn't see standalone in your screenshots, I only see the GPStest application with the number of satellites and signal, etc.)
scroll down more
ok thanks, on second page
Isn't "standalone" mode slow to get a first fix (cold start) since it doesn't use any assistance?
it takes me only 5 sec to 10 sec
sometimes if the GPS is not responding turn it off
start the GPS software, it will ask you to turn on GPS, say yes
and it will work again

I was fine before updating to jh2. I am in toronto and my gps was locking perfectly and never complained about gps. but after updating to jh2 gps is ****ed up. Now most if the time it doesnt lock or it takes centuries to lock. Gps fixes didnt work either
Sent from my GT-I9000M
I am on the same boat as you. JG9 works fine for me. JH2 got issues. Anyways, let's hope 2.2 firmware will fix this.
Sent from my GT-I9000M
I called Bell and they all said that I was the first one to report a problem with the GPS
I've also had some issues with the GPS on GJH2 never tried it on previous firmware. Does any one know how the other modes work?
Ok I made a test with standard JH2 settings (standalone GPS mode). It was fine while using Google Navigation, but I was on my bicycle so there was no car roof to block the GPS signal. It worked fine, but I didn't use it much.
I also recorded a track with mytracks (google earth file attached). In yellow the Galaxy S. In red an HTC Hero. I was in bicycle so I was following the right side of the road and parking lot.
We can see that the track for the Hero is fine. The Galaxy S, however, thinks that I crossed the tennis court, the woods, and a university building.
The funniest thing is that in GPStest, my Hero get about 12-16 meters of precision, while I get about 5-10 with the Galaxy S.
So my issue is that the GPS is not accurate. It is very quick to get a fix so this works well.
images for those without google earth
edit : even better, google map link :
http://maps.google.ca/maps/user?uid=117091360676811642987&hl=fr&gl=ca
increase the sampling rate on the galaxy
go to menu > more > settings > recording
In mytracks? I don't think it's a sampling issue. It is clearly off the path. And I didn't change the sampling rate on the Hero.
My new one came with jh2 and the GPS seems worse than the one I had with the one I had bought back on Aug 6 that came with jg9.
Hello there,
I searched throughly in forums before asking this, but
I can't seem to turn off GPS location attachment in Camera photos.
When taking a photo, gps satellite appears up left. Doesn't make a difference if my GPS radio is ON or OFF in Settings.
And my last known location gets attached into photos.
There is NO SETTING about "Location" "GPS" or something alike in camera settings/options.
My setup is I9000 8gb with Stock JPY/JPY/JPY, no lagfix, Speedmod K12K kernel applied for rooting purposes.
And my camera app is not updated from some another device. It IS the app which comes with official JPY package.
Please help
Thanks
Well, it looks like XPY is an internal firmware of 2.2.1, and the rumor says there are no GPS settings in internal firmware camera apps.
I disabled "Use wireless location service" thing in Location settings, and camera can't get location data now. Even though it still tries with satellite icon blinking.
Very silly and annoying thing.
Hope someone comes with solution.
Hi,
I've done a fair amount of searching on here and google regarding the gps issues with this phone. Tightening the screws definitely helps with the lock time, but I am still having issues with the device dropping gps lock when the display is off.
I have an S3 Mini running stock Android 4.1.2 and mainly use Viewranger for mapping and the GPS status app. Both apps work fine while the display is on, but when it goes off, gps lock is lost after an indeterminate amount of time. Setting GPS Status to 'Use gps when screen is dimmed' makes no difference.
I use both of the above GPS apps on a HTC Wildfire and a Galaxy Tab 8.9 and neither drop GPS lock when the screen is dimmed, so it is definitely an issue the S3 mini.
Here's hoping for a fix on this otherwise great device!
TIA
fourth ooplotel
Maybe I should rephrase the question
Is anyone here *not* having a problem with GPS lock when the display sleeps?
Ta
I hav the same problem which means I'm unabble to use running apps.... Have you found a solution?
No fix yet unfortunately, and it's looking increasingly like there never will be one.
I've been taking a GT8.9 in my backpack for GPS on walking trips. I'll also keep my old wildfire in case I need a pocket-sized GPS device that actually works!

Hi, i've just purchased the S3 mini phone and I have the same problem. Previously I had a Wildfire S one and I've never had any problem, even taking into account I use GPS to track my trip when I sail on the sea. I'll try to summarize some clues I've found:
- Samnsung Galaxy S3 mini with Android 4.1.2
- I usually use "Marine" app, from Navionics join "GPS Status"
- The problem only appears with "track" option, after stand-by, but after an indeterminated amount of time.
- Once we check the GPS is not working, I can see on GPS Status the satellites but no one providing position (i.e. value of 0/12 on pos/sat field). Finally I need to restart the app, GPS Status and the GPS to get the connection again.
- In other forums I've ridden about not to switch off the screen to avoid Android turn off the GPS because of energy safe mode. With tracking function should not be necessary do it.
I hope anyone can give us some light.

I have the same problem and think I have the solution (I am still testing, but sofar so god).
Use Keep My GPS Alive (testing) or GPS Keeper Lite / Keep Alive (still to try). Look for them in google play.

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried both of those apps and neither prevented the gps dropping lock when the screen was off. In fact, my gps/map application would stop tracking my location when the screen was on and either of the above were running in the background, so they actually made the situation worse!

Have the same problem. Often 0/12 with "strong" signal. But no FIX. And it happens short time after 11/12 (or so).
This happens with various ROMs (all based on Stock)

Hello all,
I have the S5 Mini Duos (SM-G800H) with Android 4.4.2, rooted, everything works nice, good battery life, except the following:
Location does not work indoor and some times in the car. GPS can lock on satellites when in open sky but sometimes in the car the signal is lost. For that times the phone should take it's general location from WiFi and mobile networks, which it does not because when I set the Location mode to "power saving", disabling the GPS sensor, the phone never shows an estimate location (a large blue circle in Google Maps), in fact Google Maps gets a very poor location overall, even when outside and GPS on, the location is not precise, the direction of my movement is not pointing, I only use Waze and it works but it works so much better on an iPhone, in car or inside when I try to check-in or search or Google Maps, I can't do anything inside with the S5 Mini.
Since I am trying to get a location from WiFi and mobile networks I guess it is not a problem of GPS sensor. What can I do to have a location (general location not accurate) inside using networks? Should an update to 5.1.1 can cure this? Can I try something before the update which can be tricky to do as there is no official release yet?
LE: Baseband version: G800HXXU1ANGF / Build number: KOT49H.G800HXXU1ANH2
Thank you!
In my case after updating to lollipop (stock) everything worked fine
Try to update might work as well
Hi all, I have installed 5.1.1, TWRP and rooted using the checklist here and yes it now takes the location from wifi&mobile network.
Still no improved location on GPS (in the car with Waze still do not show the triangle moving as it should do with a good 3D location set).
5.1.1 is a good experience overall, much improved notifications, speed is also good, battery life good with some tweaks and killing some samsung and google apps.
But, this morning my phone (not touched) said it is not rooted anymore (when trying to check wakelocks), and when I tried to restart it started to boot loop. Had to do all the installations again. Hope will not happen again.
Hi all,
After a few days ago I have reinstalled again 5.1.1 and rooted it, today in the middle of the day when trying to launch Titanium Backup, the root was gone again. Now it is loop rebooting What is wrong? The 5.1.1 build, the TWRP or the SuperSU?
