I was wondering if there was a nicely working Skype app? I don't make calls, just IM, and am currently using imo.im but don't really like it =/
What's wrong with the Skype app from Skype?

Yeah, the official Skype app (in the market) is brilliant, even for just chatting !
I use nimbuzz, and I`m pretty satisfied. Even calls are great using Skype account.
for some reason Skype app wouldn't work, i think i read it only runs on wifi? or that may have been a different app, i already have it installed so i will give it another go^^
for me skype works great also for calling (now)

It works over WiFi and 3G but in the US calling works only over WiFi.
Ah well, I use it regularly and it's fine!
Though when I tried using skype over 3G it was next to useless, even with good reception
Has been a while since this thread opened but I decided to post it anyway for all the people out there that they still need Skype working in US over 3G..

I thought skype was not supposed to work on 3g? It is on the xoom thought, I have made and received calls today using it!
Is there a Skype AP?
I just got it off the market
the regular skype app doesn't allow calling over 3g in the US, but the verizon specific one does. The xoom is a verizon device so.. there you go
It's kind of depressing that I know that, being a canadian...
The verizon app is skype mobile... This is just skype...
works great on my xoom.
There is only calling right now, no video right? I imagine it won't be long until video will be available.

Does it say NOT COMPATIBLE!!!!! or not compatible? Your response reads like a loud and angry comment/observation on your behalf.
Use Fring. Its free video chat. Gtalk does as well. I believe both can be used over 3g, 4g or wifi. Skype sucks.
Lol my bad. Not my intention. Just typing it the way it read when it came up.

The problem is getting all your friends so switch! Also Fring has no pc client & with gtalk you can't voice/video chat with other smartphones.
So, I 'm looking for a video chat app that works with the Xoom and is cross-platform.
I was able to download Fring, but it FC's. Anyone got anything?
Try tango, it works for me, u can make video calls but not receive.

I use google talk. Granted the other person has to have google talk also.. but I have used it without any issues.

That's kind of the point I want FULL functionality.
I hope that's not it because that'd be sad. Any word on when Google Talk's capabilities will be ported to *all* Google Talk capable devices?
I read that Fring should have a tablet optimized app for honeycomb soon.
Tango is kinda squirrely.... it doesn't seem to want to switch between landscape and portrait like it should
hey curious questiong guys how does skype work for the d3?
Like skype lol. Video calls and everything works. And you can use 3g and wifi. Its pretty smooth too.

Skypes ok, google talk with video works better for me.

waht differences do you notice with them ?
Are you asking the difference between Gtalk + video and Skype + video? Or the difference between the verizon Skype vs. market Skype?
The main notice between market Skype and verizon Skype for me was that I couldn't uninstall the latter. I've read a few threads that mention market Skype takes up less memory while running but I think the measurements are marginal at best.
Gtalk + video is just win anyway, the only downfall I see is that Skype has a larger user base.
Gtalk and skype. Skype is crystal clear and good audio so im not sure what advatages gtalk has

I have a rooted/rommed wifi-only S1 and my GF has a Blackberry 9780. She is currently overseas for X amount of time and the only way we can talk is by calling each other which is extremely expensive, or using skype which means she has to borrow a friend's laptop or android device. She has service on her phone over there, unsure of what type of plan.
I came up with the idea of using my old BB 8330 and figuring out how to use BBM or something similar on wifi-only, but it turns out that 'ol phone doesn't have wifi on it. It's too bad I sold my last BB some time ago which was an 8530 and had wifi. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm now wondering if there's an app I can use on my S1 that she can also use on her 9780 that would allow us to text and or talk. Something like BBM that doesn't require me to have service or a data plan. I imagine there's at least one app out there that would do this and also be available to BB users.
Thanks.
What about the WhatsApp Messenger by WhatsApp Inc. In the Play Store ?

I read somewhere that it uses your phone number but can't seem to confirm that.
I'm pretty sure we can use KIK but it's text only. I may be getting greedy with wanting text and talk, but having both would be awesome.
Does her phone have a browser? If so, you could use any site like ebuddy to talk. Or even get on something like palringo (dunno if there's a bb version?) but there must be something alike.

She has service and we *think* her data is unlimited. She also has a wireless router at her flat so wifi helps if the data is limited/costly.
We're trying to use apps over our current methods or using something browser based mainly for convenience. Something like whatsapp or KIK would work perfectly from what I understand, but they're text-only. Not a huge problem, but if I can find text+voice that would be great. Skype is normally the answer to that question but her phone, or more specifically her service provider, isn't compatible with skype from what I'm seeing.

Then ebuddy would most likely be your answer. It has chat + voice/video and is browser based.

I went with Kik for now. It's actually a pretty cool messenger app. Clean and fast.
I haven't yet found anything that covers both messages and voice in app form other than skype which I confirmed is not compatible with her model of phone.

Oh I though she had access to browser?
App wise, I'll have to keep looking.

Preferring to stay away from browser since apps are far more convenient and because browsers always run very sluggish on my cappy for some reason.

Should hassle Ebuddy to make a app then lol
But if you wanna try it, there's a bare naked browser (ugly but fasssst) on here. Called naked browser I believe.

Looks like the exact app I need and it's compatible with blackberry. Will give it a try. Thanks!
ETA: Looks like Blackberry devices can not use the VoIP feature yet but they say it will be available eventually.
Turns out you need a number for viber and my device is wifi-only. After some research I found that you can use any phone number that can receive SMS because it's for them to send you a registration PIN. I tried both my GV and Heywire numbers and haven't received that text on either one. :\
Hi All,
Im trying to video calls on my xperia z but not found...
Please help me for this thread..
Do you have tried?
Tried Skype?
As far as I know.. The XZ don't have its own video call function. Like on the SG3. But still, I used Skype. Main reason is that it used mobile data, even if I was on WiFi. Also the mobile data did not affect my monthly plan, it just raised my bill.... Go for Skype or other app from googly play

At work we use Google Hangout. It proved more reliable than Skype. But YMMV.

Really? Yeah, I have noticed that Skype is not that reliable... Getting disconnected, volume suddenly fades away etc..
Reason I use skype is that most of my friends are using it aswell...

We use it for video conference calling. Every project member has a Google+ account. Invitations are send and it works. Well, most of the time

I see! Maybe this will work better when group studying, without a member just keep falling out.
Thanks )
Now the OP has two options. Google + hangout and skype ;p

Make that three, Google Talk (and there is a iPhone client for videochatting over GTalk too, I forgot it's name, but it was pretty sucky.)

+1 for hangout using the talk app on the xz. its been the most reliable video chat program for me.
Well, does anyone even tried (custom ROM, maybe?) to make video calling function work? Besides third party apps like Skype or Hangouts? I'd just want to call my GF or dad when they aren't available on those IMs.
