Captivate Rogers caller ringtoned - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello...all my contacts came from my gmail so when I try to set a custom ringtone it shows no contacts. Is there a way to copy all my gmail Contacts to the phone? Or a 3 rd party apparently to set customized ringtones? Thx for the help!

Nobody knows?
When i play song in music player, i click "set as" caller ringtone, and it shows no contacts, even if I create one it seems as though I cant assign a ringtone for that particular contact, but it works fine if i set it as my ringtone (for everyone)

Are imported through Gmail contacts not the same as "fully-fledged", inputted into the phone contacts?
...I was about to load all of my numbers into my Gmail account's address-book, and sync. Now I'm not so sure that I want to. Partly for privacy reasons, I've kept segregated email and telephone—for years. Why make the leap now, if integration is not total...?
I've heard about an application called Google Sync. I wonder, would that be of any help?

Here is what I did. Sync contacts from gmail, in contacts hit menu and export to SD card. Copy file from internal to external SD. Hard reset to remove Google account. When resetting up your phone unchecked contact sync and them when in contact hit menu and import from SD

kind of weird and annoying why it isnt simple.
I found a way to copy them all to phone, so they show up. But when I assign them a ringtone, it doesnt work, despite a different song being chosen when i see them on contact.
Does song have to be less than 300k? i dont get an error or anything, just plays my default ringtone for all my contacts.

You can get around the 300k limit for songs. Simply create a folder on the root of your SD Card called 'ringtones' and copy the music files into there.
As for assigning custom tones to google contacts, RingDroid can do that.

Damn—you know, it's really cool that "there's an app for [everything]"—but some of these features really ought to've come standard in the OS... like, shuffling around icons on the dock, or, rearranging icons in a folder, or, placing folders within folders, or, allowing for %-indication of the battery in the status-bar.
Methinks tweakfreak users ought to be the first guys hired to field-test/QA these devices, and point out what's missing to the devs

Well ring droid worked great...many thanks!

[Q] Syncing contacts using Google

Hi everybody,
I was able to export all my outlook contacts into a csv file and then upload it to google so that i could sync my captivate.
It worked great!
the only thing that i'm having a problem with, is that since they're considered google contacts, it won't let me assign a ringtone to them or even separate my contacts into groups.
Now i know third party apps let me assign ringtones, but its kind of annoying that i'm more limited on options when they're google contacts and not contacts saved either on the SIM or on the phone's memory itself.
Does anyone know a way around this? i've tried playing around with the menus, but there's no option to just save them to the phone.
ok, so after playing around for the last hour or so, i've figured out the answer to my own question.
i exported the .vcf file from gmail, then imported it into the phone and that did the trick!

[Q] Lost contacts going to Cog 2.2-6

Ok...I totally F'd up. I flashed from 2.1 to COG 2.2-6 not knowing that my contacts on the simm card were going to be erased. Is there a way to get them back?
Click on the phone icon, then click on contacts, then click on the far left button on the bottom of your phone the one to the left of the home button(forgot what its called) there will be a import option. Your contacts may be saved to your memory card if you put them there. Worth a look.
Also next time use this to export contacts before flashing.

well...I'm really hosed now...back to square one...I tried Titainium back to get contacts....that f'd up the contact app in the phone app...keeps force closing...then I tried to restore to JH7 using Rom manager.....that f'd up my log on. Now it gets stuck at the welcome screen....so I then tried to go back to my very first backup.....same results....looks like its Odin to JF6 for me....
But...I was wondering.....does a rom manager back up save the contacts stored on the simm card?.....could of saved myself a bounch of trouble if I knew the answer to that question ahead of time....
Contacts saved on the sim card should not be effected by flashing a rom at all, it is only contacts saved on the actual phone that would be lost. I'm amazed that so many people these days don't sync their contacts with the cloud, all I need to do after flashing a ROM is enter in my Google account info and then all contacts etc are synced up automatically.

Either use Ringdroid from the market to assign ringtones to Gmail contacts or just create a phone based contact with the same name that should automatically link to the gmail contact and allow you to set a ring tone, kind of annoying to do though but much better than losing your contacts.

UPDATE...got phone back up and running on Cog 2.2-6. Found my .vcf backup with Astro....uploaded it to Google and then sync'd back to phone...all better....on side note...for whatever reason my phone is not picking up the .vcf when I try and restore it from the contacts menu. I Googled the issue and seems to be common. Thanks for the responses.
Same problem, but I found that turning on car mode caused the contacts to suddenly appear. After turning off car mode contacts worked properly. I saved the contacts to the sim card between update tries & the contacts import would never find it. Guess Titanium had it but left it hidden for some reason.
Hey, here's a better answer. You'll something like Root Explorer. Seems the contact app saves the contacts in /sdcard/sd (provided you exported them to the sd card. When you try to re-import them the app claims nodda. That's because the app is looking at /sdcard/external_sd for whatever reason. I just copied the .vcf file over to that location & bam contacts will import.

[Q] Hotmail Contacts

Hi all
My g/f got the HD7 today and it's been fairly plain sailing so far. Couple of things have come up though, she got her contacts imported from her sim card without any problems but as soon as she linked her Hotmail account it imported those Contacts as well. Thing is she doesn't want the Hotmail contacts, so can we get rid of them without deleting the Hotmail connection.
We also couldn't find out how to set the snooze time for the alarm or set the alarm to be full volume as soon as it goes off.
Thanks for your help
you can't set the volume separately so the phone has to be left at full volume, and there aren't any snooze time settings as far as I've been able to see, the phones very beta maybe even alpha state atm
They can't really have released a phone in beta form can they? That would be a sure fire way to upset customers. Going back to the alarm, currently it starts low and raises the volume over time, we want it full volume straight of. Might try a third party alarm.
the software's stable but the feature set is really limited, patches are going to add features such as cut and paste and use your own ring tones, things that people have come to expect as standard, so though the software/hardware isn't really beta, the feature set is so lacking it's as if MS launched early and are waiting to hear the cries about what is missing to add them ala the cut and paste.
Any answer to the hotmail sync of contacts? Can we pick and choose which contacts to use or not use any or delete them after the sync?
I had to delete all of my contacts, didn't really bother me seeing as I don't use MSN nowerdays and my Windows Live ID is a @Gmail addy anyway so I don't and Can't use Hotmail.
@tboy2000
Hey, yes you can remove the hotmail contacts...
Go into "settings", "email & accounts" then select your hotmail account. from here you should have a "content to syncronsise" section. just remove the contacts from the list.

That cant be done if that account is being used as your primary live id though.
Indeed - it's not possible. The solutions are to merge hotmail accounts to normal sim accounts, if they match, or to delete your hotmail contacts completely.
Not ideal, but it's how it is.

Contacts appear three times in messaging.

Certainly others must have this problem. It stems from, I believe, having identical SIM, Google, and Phone contacts.
But that's what I WANT. But I don't want everyone's name to appear three times when I want to send someone a text message. Is there ANY solution to this?
long press one of them, then "join contact"
day one...
I had double names appear for texting that went away by ungrouping them in contacts. I believe all my contacts became "grouped" when I tapped my backup .vcf file twice after a rom install...which may not be the same situation as yours.

Just change the view to only show you contacts from one of the three databases. Either Google, phone, or sim.
From contacts hit the leftmost softkey and then select more. Then select display options

My contacts aren't grouped, I don't think. What is grouping, exactly?

My Contacts only displays my phone contacts. This has no bearing on the following:
1. When I want to send a text, everyone's name appears three times.
2. When I click the call button in a text, it asks me which number I want to call, then lists each number three times.
Something is up.
Open a contact and hit edit. If the contact is grouped there will be a + sign. All my contacts were grouped. After ungrouping them, they showed up twice in contacts, and I had to delete one.

That WOULD solve the problem.... except:
1. I do not want to delete my contacts off my SIM. The SIM card carrying your contacts is a great feature.
2. I do not want to delete my contacts off my Phone. The Contacts menu looks a lot sleeker without the icons to the bottom right of each entry, and the pictures I feel load faster when they are stored on the phone.
3. I do not want to delete my contacts off my Google account. It stores my contact pictures as well as makes it easy when I flash over to a new ROM.
I will not delete these entries. They are all important. I want a real solution, and I am pretty sure one doesn't exist.
Edit: There isn't a "plus" sign, but each contact has three separate entries.
it was a little hard to understand at first but this is your poblem
#1 where do you want all your contacts saved to? PICK ONE (phone/sim/google)
open contacts> menu button > more > settings > save contacts to...
(google is better than sim or phone IMO auto backup and restore to net) but pick ONE. (uno, une, 1)
#2
open contacts> menu button > more > display options > choose contacts to display
only check the thing you picked above. UNCHECK the others
FIXED

There is the problem. And yes, I do see the "Remember this choice" option, but that is also not a solution as 1. I do flash my phone often and I would have to remember it every time, and 2. I would have to remember it for all of my contacts, which would be a pain.
Trusselo's instructions in post #10 are dead on, except in your case, i'll ask that you choose to sync your contacts to a single google account rather than the other 2 options (phone or sim). Unless you often swap your SIM card to a dumb phone, this is your best option anyways.
To ensure we save all your contacts among all your storage locations.. First, adjust 'display options' in Contacts so that ALL your contacts are displayed from all your locations (duplicates are ok).
Next, still in contacts, open up menu, choose 'import/export/', then choose 'export to sd card.'
Now follow Trusselo's instructions in post #10.. Make sure you save contacts to a google account. Also when choosing 'display options', uncheck EVERYTHING, and ONLY check 'my contacts' under the google account you save contacts to.
Go to 'Accounts and sync' in settings and ensure that auto-sync is ON, and that 'sync contacts' is ON for the google account you're saving contacts to.
Now, in contacts, open up menu, choose 'import/export' again, and this time choose 'import from sd card'.
Open up GMail in a web browser, go to Contacts, go to 'my contacts', click on the 'more actions' button, choose 'find & merge duplicates'. Now just give your phone a minute to re-sync all your contacts with google..
This will clean up any duplicate contacts and phone numbers you may have. So you should only see one entry for each contact and number. It will also sync all your contacts regularly to your google account, even for new entries, which imo, is a lot safer than storing them directly on the phone or SIM card.
I've tested this method, and it should work for you if followed exactly. If there's anything that needs to be clarified, let me know.
I want them saved to my SIM card. And I want them saved to my Google Account. But I want them stored on my Phone.
I believe you want me to delete them from my SIM and from my Phone in order for this to work. I simply do not see why I would need to do that. If that is not what you are saying, then what is it? On my Contacts on GMail, there's only one number for each name.

To be clear, this will NOT delete contacts from you SIM card, nor from your phone. What this does is force ALL your contacts from your SIM AND your phone AND your Google account to be synced(copied) to your google account. Once that is done, all your contacts will appear on your google account and will be immediately copied back to your phone (as a locally saved copy).
Then what we're doing is just "hiding" all the duplicate contacts from your SIM card and 'Phone location' (not deleting them), so that we only see the contacts that were synced with your google account.. so its less confusing than viewing the same contact from 3 different locations.
All your old contacts will remain on your SIM card, only now all your old contacts and newly created ones will appear in contacts and be synced (backed-up) to your google account. This is useful because.. say you lose your phone, you will still have a copy of all your contacts in your google account and can be easily synced with a new phone, if they were stored on the SIM card or the 'Phone location' then they would just be.. gone.. lost forever. They will also sync back to the phone (with pics) if you flash a new ROM.
On another note, should you ever want to get a new phone and simply move your contacts, you can sync your contacts via your google account like I said, OR you could just go menu>import/export>export to sim card.
Make sense?

No, i'm asking you to do the opposite. I'm asking you to store all your contacts to Google, and ONLY display Google contacts, and UNCHECK (hide) SIM and PHONE from 'Display Options' so that you do not see any duplicate names or phone numbers.
This will most likely solve your problem with seeing duplicate entries and is a much smarter way of managing your contacts.

Actually, by your own admission, you're not.
"if you're asking me to change the display option to only display SIM/Phone/Google contacts, it is already set to do that."
Right there, you just said that ALL your contact locations are turned ON..which is the cause of you seeing 3 identical phone numbers for each contact. Earlier in the thread it was pointed out you need to ONLY select ONE option; the same location you are storing contacts to.
Let's say you already have all your contacts save to Google, that's great. That means you don't have to go through that entire process i wrote up. All that was meant to do is ensure ALL your contacts from all your locations were saved to google, but if that's already done then there's no need to go through all that.
It really goes back to Post #10.. assuming you have only have no duplicate phone numbers set up in google, then you just need to follow those instructions and you won't see those duplicates anymore.
Sounds like you either didn't follow the directions correctly in post #10 or not at all. The key thing is save your new contacts to google, then change the display options so ONLY, ONLY, JUST ONE, option is checked, and that is the Google account you are saving contacts to. Once this is done, you will not see duplicate entries anymore.

Question Cannot use my ringtones for individual contacts. Still uses the default.

MIUI 12.5.3 EEA original.
Using latest Google Contacts.
I can assign a ringtone to a contact (mid or mp3 doesn't matter) but when I receive a call from that contact the default ringtone is always played, not the one I selected.
Any suggestion, or it's this just another bug of MIUI 12.5.3??
Thanks.
Update
Apparently only contacts recorded in the Google account can have a selected ringtone.
And the contacts used by the contact app must be those of the Google account.
If using the local device contacts, individual ringtones for contacts can be selected but are not played anyway.
Never happened such a problem with all my previous phones, this is my first Xiaomi...
The only workaround for me was to select the ringtone for each individual contacts, works so far.
This works only if the individual contact to customize belongs to the Google account contact group.
If the phone is configured to use only contacts stored locally on the phone or SIM (not Google contacts, I don't like to give my contacts data to Google...) the individual ringtone selection is available but the phone ignores this setting and uses the default ringtone anyway.
I've just checked my Google contacts and there is 42 and my phone there is more than that and I'm sure my ringtone was changed and they have called me with my new ringtone. There are a few names not showing on my Google contacts, do you think they are hidden?
Probably you have to synchronize device contacts with Google contacts
