[Q] Question to All... - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
First post here, but been actively watching and gaining knowledge as I go..
I first want to say Thank you to all the producers of these new ROM's we have available!!!!
Now I wanted to say that my Captivate recently "Bricked". It's ok.
I had Root(SU perm.) Titanium backup, Rom Manager w/Clockwork mod & OCLF too.
My problem occured yesterday(Oct. 28th) - A day that will go down in history!
I was running Unhelpful's Cog Rom 2.1 and decided to upgrade to the Cog 2.2 beta 9 ROM.... After i did everything, it went well.... I noticed when I turned my phone back on that it wasnt recognizing my internal memory or even external.
I tried rebooting back into recovery and tried to reinstall ROm manager or any app and it kept saying, "not enough space". So I tried to reboot recovery and install a earlier version and nothing worked. Now it just boot loops into recovery screen and Clockwork mod seems to be gone!!
Oh well no harm as it is under warranty and my new one will arrive by Monday...So my question to all here is - When I receive my new phone, can I Root? Reinstall my Titanium Backup and my Rom Manager and Clockwork....Then put the Cognition file 2.2 Beta 9.1.2 (or 3) on my internal SD and watch the maqgic??? Or do I have to do anything else...? I should backup my stock ROM to where?? Internal & External card?
Thanks guys,
Mike De.

It just won't go into download mode? try taking out the battery and sim and doing it again.
EDIT: and just leave only the battery in when you try it.

open odin 1 click stock restore on puter, phone off, hold down volume up and down then while holding plug in usb, should throw u into download mode and and odin

take the sim out, the external sd( if any ), the battery...now connect it via usb...now hold down the volume buttons( both of em) and now put the battery in....it should go in download mode

You are telling me that this method doesn't work?

*sigh* what do you have NO idea what's been going on in this world? That's right, that method, or any other method, absolutely does NOT work on batch 1008 Captivates. Don't act so amazed like its a new thing.

Thanks, but I did this and it did go into Download mode but not recognized by computer... ODIN opens but nothing happens... nothing in any of the boxes and start does nothing.
Somehow my phone is not visible to PC...If I could get it visible again or even go back to stock, I wouldnt have a problem.
As I said previously, when i re-install packages in recovery it does NOT take me into Clockwork Mod recovery.
So, yes i can get into Download mode on phone but not PC. Just constant boot loop into Samsung recovery..............Now any takers want to try to come up with solution?

[Q] Help! I Think I bricked my phone!!

for some reason i went to reboot my phone and it wontboot just hangs.. can boot to recovery and do a factory reset.. but still wont boot.
cannot boot to download mode with vol up keypad and power.. just continually reboots to the samsung white message and starts over.. any suggestions or should i just send it back?
got it working whey.. it wouldnt boot up to recovery.. got it to goto recovery during a boot loop by plugging in usb.. i think.. the only think i can think is that earlier today i replace the mms.apk and mms.odex with an earlier version from jf3.. didnt like that at all. but i didnt reboot till later.. this was to try and work around the messaging bug in jg1.. .since i had to reinstall i am happy to report as previously reported that the the csc from jff messaging works fine the the modem and core files from jg1.. (that is what i reflashed it too..)
[Q] Help! Think I bricked my phone!!
Flashed to WJG1
Started Odin,it started to do its thing.halfway through I got the USB disconnect sound.Odin stopped , I now have a green screen
And u cant boot it to either restore or download mode?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Remove battery! put it in again!
Start in download mode! (volume down+home+power)
and reflash!
Keeps on happening.Have tried WJG1 and WJG5.With WJG5 I thought it was going to work.Got 3/4 of the way then it disconnected.

Did you use the other 512.pit file? and did you check re-partition?
Make some screenshots!
Yes to both
Did you install the latest version of Kies? (just for the driver?)
And did you close kies before you started flashing?
I think its worked.
YESSSSS
Im on WJG5 ....shall I just leave it on that. I thought I would roll back to JG1 with r2, as I was having problems with it forever scanning the SD Card, and with MTP mode keep on flashing ...initializing.
Which it is doing right now
I have the latest version of Kies installed...and I never open it.
Edit: SHOULD I be able to roll back to an earlier firmware?

As far as i know you can flash whatever firmware you would like! the best option right now is to use JG5!
Correct me if i'm wrong!
Are you on WJG5?
Do you have any problems?
The MTP constantly initializing (Not sure thats a real problem as I turn it off and use mass storage, but it should work so I want it to)
The constant Media Scanning.
Doesnt feel particularly quick.
And with WJG1+r2 I could run scripts for lag and market and it was pretty quick.
Can I run the scripts with WJG5?? r2 made it nice and easy.

Yes i am on WJG5! you can root it and you can use the lagfix!
I am currently using it without the lagfix and it works great! no blackscreens whatsoever!
Question! did you remove the simcard and sd card when you where flashing with odin?
It shouldn't be scanning for media all the time! don't know whats wrong!
Yes I did.
Following a tutorial which says to uninstall Market from Applications. When I go to Applications(clicking Fliter>All) and bringing up Market there is no option to delete
Here mate, have a look at some suggestions.
And some other quick - you should have run kies before the flashing, so it would install all the drivers, it might be your problem.
Maybe a moderator can pin this, ot some other inbricking topic/guide?
Link to tutorial - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725858
Yeah but I have flashed it about half a dozen times previous with no problems.
Well, I dont know what happened, but after setting up my phone pretty much as it was before I thought "I didnt do a factory reset after flashing the rom", so I did so.Rebooted, went to Market and all apps are showing
What does a factory format do??
I thought it would wipe everything off the phone?
After doing one on my newly flashed SGS, I had a look at the SD card and all the folders of games/programs were still there.
i was afraid too when i flashed with the latest firmware last week
odin did nothing, so after 10 mins i remove the usb cable and put it again
then restart computer and put the usb cable ... but the computer didn't see the phone
i turn off the phone, it turn on automaticaly with a nice logo with a phone and a computer... like the phone wana tell me : "You dumb idiot, you bricked me"
I was near to be killed (its my wifes mobile, not mine) but then i tried to return into download mode and it worked and lucky the computer saw the phone
ps: i did this night, when my wife was asleep, so she didn't noticed, but if she noticed or if it was bricked ... well i guess she would kicked my ass and i would be 500box poorer

Q boot loop right after froyo upgrade

Hi everyone,
This morning I upgraded to froyo via Kies on my Bell i900m. It was running stock JH2 without any rooting or lagfix etc.
The upgrade process went smoothly however after booting into froyo i began to get force closures and then the phone froze (within ten mins of running froyo).
Then I did a battery pull to reboot and now i'm stuck in a boot loop.
The phone only goes to the "Galaxy S GT-i9000m" screen then reboots constantly. I can't get into recovery mode (phone reboots too quickly) but I can get into download mode.
Is my internal sd fried? any advice how i can try to do a factory reset ? Can i even do this if i can't get into recovery?
any help is greatly appreciated
Internal SD issues,
you can try one thing,
download Odin 1.7 and i9000UGJH2 then flash ONLY the PDA.
Once booted open the recovery and if you have errors mounting you have the internal sd problem..
Since it was an official froyo upgrade though I would just take it in.
Edit:
Btw, you didnt have a lagfix installed right?

No I didn't have lagfix, or root - it's purely stock. The only modification done was that I unlocked it (but i'm running it on Bell)

I took mine back to bell this evening. I have the bill but they didn't ask to see it they just took the phone and sent it in for repairs.
If you can get into recovery mode I would see if the internal SD is working. If it is you can flash with Odin and see if that fixes things. If the internal is fried then you have to send it in but no worries like i said they didn't ask me for the bill (but I was using a bell sim).

[Q] Rooted... now what

Hey everybody. So I rooted by phone following the instructions from theunlockr.com and their "how to root the samsung vibrant/captivate"
and then followed the instructions on their "how to load a custom rom on samsung captivate/vibrant"
Now what exactly do I do? I mean I kind of understand ROMs but if I want to install 2.2 what should I do? Is Cognition a good choice? How exactly would I install that? Also if I install 2.2 would I be able to go back to 2.1 when the official is finally released? I understand enough to mod my phone but not fully enough how to change it back if I mess up. So could I please get some help?
Also:
- What new things can I actually do w/ 2.2?
- Will I have to reinstall all my apps? Contacts?
Thanks in advance!
Download rom manager from market free version
To option flash clockwork recovery
Select captivate
Turn phone off
Vol up and down and power
When at&t comes up let go
Should go into recovery
Select reinstall packages
Brings you back to same screen
Reinstall packages
Should bring you to green recovery
Reboot phone
Power off phone
Remove bat, sim, and external sd
Put bat back in
Usb plugged into computer
Vol up and down hold plug usb in
Should have an orange android with a shovel, you are in download mode
Pull bat, put everything back in boot phone
If you can not do every thing listed I would hold flashing anything
Make sure you have usb drivers for phone installed and pc can see your phone
Don't forget to use Titanium Backup first so you can recover your installed apps. I use ODIN JF6 With 3 Button Fix to get back to stock.
There are a lot of good ROM's out there. I've been really happy with di11igaf's 3.0.2, but it's best to see what the people are saying in each thread and make an educated choice.

some quick help please di11i's 6.0

i just flashed back to stock using odin. rooted the phone. installed the clockwork then i went into clockwork and went to install a new rom. i selected di11i's 6.0 rom and its says the following:
installing: SDCARD:dill1s6.0NO_OC.zip
finding update package...
and thats it. what do i do now before it went all the way through and then went back and rebooted and it started up. its like it hung on that part and it wont do anything. i would say its been at that screen for 5-10 minutes and now im worried. please someone give me a little info.
i didnt have enough post to post in the di11i's thread or i would have
thanks
I usually download the rom and place it in the sdcard root and reboot to recovery and install from sdcard.
thats what i did and i selected it in the recovery and went to install and it started but it stopped on the finding update package and i dont know what to do. can i take out the battery and it will reboot fine? i dont know i dont want to mess it up lol
use your key combo to get into recovery, or type "adb reboot recovery" if you have android sdk installed. then flash the zip again.

First of all, pls pull out battery and let us know the build number, if its 10.09 and earlier or one of the 10.10 and later models.
Second, do u have access to recovery console/download mode?
Recovery: Press and hold the two volume buttons, and power at the same time. When the phone restarts and it as at AT&T logo, release power (only). It should show u a recovery console.
Download: Turn off the phone. Hold the volume down, and plug the phone to computer. It should a yellow triangle and an android guy with a spade.
Following instructions are for 10.09 or earlier build phones only.
1. Get into download mode
2. Use the 1-click odin to flash stock
3. Copy the update.zip attached to this post to ur sdcard root.
4. Copy dilli's 6.0 NO OC zip to ur sd card (select no overclock kernel to be on the safe side in case ur phone does not support speeds over 1200)
5. Get the phone into recovery mode (as per instructions above)
6. Select "reinstall packages". U wud need to do this twice.
7. Now ur recovery console would come in green. Select "install zip from SD card", and then "choose zip from SD card", and then browse to the dilli's 6.0 zip file and select it.
Sit back having a cup of coffee, and the phone do its work.
Please let us know if u run into any issues.
thank you guys so much for the help i really appreciate it. i pulled the battery out and put it back in and went back into recovery. i then went to reinstall packages and went into clockwork. then i tried installing it again and it went through this time. i now have rebooted the phone and it is starting up now as i type this. also my phone is the 10.09

Based on ur number of posts, I presume u r new to this.
1. I would recommend u flash stock when moving between ROMs. This is not mandatory, but is recommended.
2. Do NOT use TiBu (titanium backup) to backup or restore any SYSTEM data. User apps and data is fine.

yes i am new to this lol. i was running cognition 3.02 and then just flashed 3.04 over the 3.02. but this time since i was flashing to a totally different rom i went back to stock using odin. and thanks for the tip on ONLY installing user apps and data.
i recommend you build a jig yourself or buy it online:

it is a very useful tool and will get you into download mode when things mess up. if you will flash / customize your rom in the future, you may need one ...
ya i have another cord i could cut and make one myself. lol this may be stupid but after i am flashed now and its working fine i installed titanium back up pro but its not showing up anywhere in my phone to use it. lol i am a phone noob just tryin to learn ahaha. thanks everybody
edit: i got it now lmao

Issues with preparing phone to root and Questions about Ti-backup

Hey everyone, so it's high time i get off stock 2.1 JH7 and onto some decent ROMs (Firefly in this case, i heard it's good and doesn't drain the battery as much. Used Cognition 2.3b7 before)
First of all, the phone works fine under normal conditions as a USB mass storage device.
So I'm following the normal procedure for rooting the phone (this is my replacement phone), So i downloaded the drivers again (x64) and installed them, downloaded dotNet 4.0 fix and installed, put my phone into USB debugging mode, and hook up the phone...
So i get to the device driver installation screen and I get the following:
SAMSUNG Android USB Composite device Ready to use
CDC Abstract Control Module Installing device software
USB Media Storage Device Failed
S3C6410 Android ADB Installing device software
Now the first phone had no problems, why the USB Media Storage Device failed i have no idea... am I supposed to mount it in USB debugging?
The other two things being installed stay in a constant loop and never actually install for some reason.
Am I doing something wrong? Following this order
1) Downloaded and installed 64 bit drivers (Win 7 Pro x64)
2) Installed dotNet 4.0 fix
3) Put phone in USB debugging
4) Run one-click root...
Should I just root the phone manually? I want to be able to use one-click root to unroot the phone when i need to.
Thanks for the time and consideration guys
Interesting, tried it on my laptop ( Vista HP 32bit) and had no issues.... I wonder what's wrong with my desktop...
The 64 bit drivers are kind of screwy. I had flashed countless roms and one day my computer, win 7 64 bit, just decides to not recognize my phone in download mode tried all versions of odin and then uninstalling drivers rebooting and reinstalling them no dice nothing would get it recognized in download mode, finally had to restore my system, luckily I make a restore point about once a week, and that did the trick.
Well, just going to use my laptop to play with my phone then I prefer my desktop though, but since it works, why not
Oh quick question. From stock JH7, should I be using Odin3 to revert my phone to JF6 or am I ok to proceed? I know that from my previous phone i updated to JH7 before installing cognition 2.3b7. Would it be safer to just flash JF6? Thanks.

Jh7 is still 2.1 right? It has a 2e recovery? If so then you are good. If you try to flash and you get a signing error then its a 3e recovery and flashing to jf6 will fix that.
I had thos problem the moment i flashed my phone... I had to down load the application from samsung website. The regular drivers stop working. Then i was able to put cog from win64 to my phone.
Also the name of the driver is like serial com somethng. It allows odin to properly connect.

Yea, recovery says 2e. I'm not going to bother using my desktop if my laptop works fine. Anyways just bought Ti backup pro, and backing up my apps now before I put my new rom on (cog or firefly). I updated superuser by accident, don't think there should be too many issues.
Yes I'm new with most of this. Use backup of user apps and system data? Then what should I backup, since I'm trying to avoid all bloatware? Then when putting it back on, use restore the same? Or just apps?

If you want to get rid of the bloat, you will have to go through and unselect all the garbage you don't need/want when running the batch backup. After flashing "restore missing apps and data" restoring system data causes problems, you can restore individual system things like wifi access points, and contacts storage (or any green system data)
Hope that wasn't too scatter brained I'm kinda stoned.
(I said before I was new to TiBackup and Android rooting for that matter)
Anyways, what I was looking for was to just back up the apps that have extensive settings/game progress and wifi stuff.
Looking at the batch list, it gets a bit confusing as to what process does what...
It's safe to uncheck all the red ones right? Then I get the green processes that I have no idea what they specifically do.

Ok, then choose backup user apps, and after that runs, hit the backup/restore button at the top in the middle and choose the green system settings you want, you probably just want the wifi access points and [sms/mms/apn] dialer storage (that's all your texts and phone log data)
After flash is the same as I said before.
Yes! Thank you so much!
Firefly here I come
Oh last question. Should I need to save the titanium backup folder first to my computer before putting my new ROM on?

You don't HAVE to, but just to be safe I copy the whole sdcard took my pc. Never had an issue where I lost any data but I don't ever want to and be s.o.l.
Oh and before you restore, st the bottom left of titanium backup there Is a button that says "problems?" Hit that and install busybox.
Last but not least enjoy firefly, it's my favorite.
Yup, everything is now backed up.
Went into ClockworkMod (ROM Manager), booted into ClockworkMod recovery mode to make a backup and I get....
Android Recovery 2e
Only options are to reboot, install packages, delete data, etc
What happened to ClockworkMod recovery.... so I can make a backup of my ROM? By allowing ROM Manager to make a backup i get the same screen.
I've already Flashed ClockworkMod Recovery (Version 2.5.1.2)
Oh I already did the busybox installation on Ti-Backup.
______
If this helps, I deleted the update.zip that was in the internal SD card. I assumed this was put there by the One click root. Perhaps that was in error?
______
Yup, just saw that by reflashing CWM it put another update.zip in the card. Loaded that twice and now am in CWM Recovery good to go
And finally, starts the long process of waiting for the phone to get to 100% battery before putting the ROM on
