[Q] Xcaliburinhand's reorient Kernel advise - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i got the reorient kernel so now i am wondering which of the i9000 rom's to flash? most of the Rom's over there have their own kernels built in so besides Tayutama's i can't find anything to try out
Voodoo/z4 compatibility preferred.

You can use pretty much any one of the roms that are in the i9000 forum. Just flash the rom and then the kernal right away afterwards through recovery mode. Right now im using Darkys raw steel edition v3.0 with reorient.

I'm making that rom compatible with captivate kernels as we speak (trying anyway, pain in the ass)

You may want to follow this thread since you will be using JPM modem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818981 (talks about other options for modems if you have problems with reception) I am currently studying it for possible changes.
My changes to Doc's v6
1) I also themed with mine with the stock lock, circle battery, and power button options which one member posted found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8883089&postcount=1700
2) I also use CM6 email which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8849671&postcount=1105
3) Browser from JPA is at start of Doc's thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8789398&postcount=4
4) Reorient kernel (CWR version zip without BLN) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808286
6) Uninstalled apps I didnt need using Titanium
7) Voice Search wasn't working (fc's) fix is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8883525&postcount=27
May the Force be with you

Why don't you have a lag fix

Doc doesn't use then because out is fast way it is. I don't like to hassle with voodoo whet you have to disable brite you flash another rom.
Now moved to jpa. Newly out yesterday so not tested yet.

[Q] Kernel compatibility

Hi,
Can I flash a froyo kernel to an eclair rom and vice-versa?
Will I loose/get fonctionalities?
What I want to do:
flash a 2.6.29 kernel(eclair) to a JPK rom to run voodoo on JPK (I will propably loose some fonctionality since its an *old* kernel)
flash a 2.6.32.9 rev6 (asian froyo dxJP1 kernel) to a JPK rom (to get better battery life and smoother flash since I tried JP1 for a week and it was stable and fast)
flash a voodoo modified kernel to any 2.2 rom to see what happens (but I am a little afraid to flash an oc/uv kernel to a rom not designed for it since it could maybe, under some circumstance damage the phone...)
Any ideas or tests already run?
I am gonna try the JP1 kernel on then JPK rom tomorrow to see if it works and if I got improvements from the JP1...

Your Phone wont boot, but try it.
2.1 and 2.2 are different worlds.
franklin01, this thread belongs in the Q&A section, not in development. Take a moment and read the "STOP!! Before you post, read this NOW!!" thread at the top of both of these sections, it has clear guidelines for proper thread placement.

Axura 2.0.1/2.0.4 combined with eugene's build a11/a12 kernel{WORKS!!!}

I in no way take credit for the work that has been done, only testing the mated files..credit goes to MASTER { Devs4Android} and eugene373 {xda-developers}
Ok, so I've been experimenting with axura 2.0.1 and this is what I got working...I'm still testing this but have been running for 4 hours now
I will not be held responsible for anything that happens to your phone as a result of your actions..
Backup all data/files/apps to be safe
Things needed*

1. Odin with eugene's 2.2 froyo package
2. Boot back into recovery
3. Flash axura 2.0.1 rom (reboot)
4. Boot into recovery
5. Flash eugene's a12 "or" a11 kernel(reboot)
6.boot into recovery
7. set up lag fix, tweaks, etc to your desired settings..
8. reboot, it will go to a menu, i suggest using the first option to backup and restore!!
11.DONE!! Enjoy....
***UPDATE***
Ok, so i paired Axura 2.0.3 with #805 kernel and it runs flawlessly!!!
same method as before just a different kernal.. so for future reference when Axura 2.0.3 becomes available to everyone look back for this post{BOOKMARK ME!!]
UPDATE!!!
Axura 2.0.1 rom is the less glitchy..{just released 2.0.4 "early" with the fixes applied, flashing now}
the best kernel available as of now is Eugene's a12/a11 oc/uv!!! has all available lag fixes, tweaks, and misc stuff built into the recovery, and the voltage app allows adjustment in individual speeds!!

It just drives me nuts that these kernels add the I9000 splash screen - but the 800 series, on up to 805 if tweaked correctly work great.

Works exactly as described!!
Confirmed working on Axura 2.0.2, using the OP exact instructions... Quadrant Score 2072, Linpack 16.777, the I9000 splash screen doesn't bother me, but to each his (or her) own.
Thanks for posting this... works beautifully!

i think axura 2.0.1 runs pretty quick already, but I tried this out for fun. It runs even quicker now =D no problems so far.

It would be awesome to get Eugene's latest kernel (#106) working on Axura. Eugene stated that it should work on other roms as long as you include the zImage (duh) and the /system/init.rc. Tried doing it with a flashable zip as well as flashing just the kernel and then using adb to push the init.rc but still couldn't get it to boot. Maybe a much more talented individual could get this set up working.
Is it possible to flash axura 2.03 and flash the kernel by using CW? I believe kernels can be induvidually flashed right without odin correct? Thanks.

So I'm already on Axura, so I can just jump right to the flashing of eugenes kernel through cw recovery, correct? Don't get why I'd have to odin eugenes froyo package. I hate odin if you haven't guessed by now lol.
Also, which one is supposed to be better? 802 vs. 805

Yeh I hate odin also. I believe we should be able to flash in cw. I dont see why one would have to flash eugenes rom also. Im curious. Anyone care to expound. Thanks!
Correct...if your already on Axura your fine, except if you have any voodoo lag fix our oclf lag fix..you would have to remove them first...I personally like #802..but to each his own

Yes as long as it is a flashable .zip
Kernel and not made for odin..but thus far out of all the kernels eugene's #80x kernels are the only ones that work and are cwm flashable..

After I install the ext2 files, it says I already have a lagfix installed. I followed your procedure correctly but with Axura 2.0.3 and kernel #802.
I had voodoo installed before but I flashed disable-lagfix.zip before I did any of this.

What kind of reboot issues? Were you running a rom other then axura when you flashed 2.0.3? Best bet is to odin and do it all fresh and only flash one at so time with reboots between flashes...and disable any lag fixes!!

[Q] Don't wanna brick my phone.......Please, advise...

I have done reading a lot of post recently.
I brick'ed my cappy once, I reflash the stock kernel, and it came back alive.
After that, I managed flashing my I897 into Foyo 2.2 and with Cog 2.4.1 Rom.
So far so good.
I am still very afraid of brick my cappy again.
So, I decided post question here, just to clear my mind.
If I wanna flash it into an I9000 Rom from Cog 2.4.1 Rom
What are the right steps ??
My current system config is listed here
Firmware 2.2
Baseband Version - I897 UCJJ4
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.9
Build Number - Cognition. v2.4.1
The best thing you can do is decide which i9000 Rom you want to flash to and read the OP of that thread for exactly how to flash. It is gonna require both odin and clockwork though. Which Rom are you wanting to go to?

From your opinion, which I9000 Rom is most popular ?? (This might be the best one i think)
Is it ganna be better than Cog's I897 rom ??
Really I prefer to stick with cognition but there is no denying that setirons kernel is the best one going right now but it doesn't play well with cognition. If I was going to go i9000 I would use mikeymikes conversion of docs Rom...it looks really nice and everyone in that thread loves it.

[Q] Darkys 8.1 question (humour me - im a bit new to this!)

I flashed this rom yesterday (after 8.0 wipe) for 2 reasons. Firstly as a path to get to v9, but also to take advantage of the voodoo sound improvements. This is where im lost.. i thought it came as part of the rom, but cant find any trace of it...
how do i find / enable it???
Cheers in advance
Simon
ASK Darky i dont know what he puts in his rom one would expect Darky to be able to tell you .
Or SEARCH VOODOO SOUND
jje
Thanks for your patience.
Download Voodoo control app from market.
Its part of the kernel not the rom ;p Darky just uses a kernel that implimented it. Any froyo rom can have voodoo sound as long as you flash a kernel that implimented it.

[Q] does kernel matter?

Do you have to use specific kernels with certain custom roms? I am currently running andromeda 3 with ursa minor kernal. Can I just flash a new rom via clockwork mod without changing kernel?
Thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You just have to captivate kernel with captivate modem (unless reorinted i9000 kernel) and sam matchup with i9000 kernel/modem... If the rom is compatable by what I said then u can just flash the rom

Tbh, I don't see why you would want to flash another rom using ursa minor. A3 + ursa minor go insanely well together (which is why they are in the ROM full flash). I believe you can use ursa minor on other froyo custom rom but I could be wrong (Adam, if you see this, please don't kill me if I'm wrong ) as A3 is I9010 based.
Other roms come with different kernel as the devs feel like they're the best/most stable to go along with their respective rom. So if you want the best experience trying a different one, I suggest you do a full flash (which includes rom, modem, kernel) and try them out that way. You can then decide if A3 (or any other) is more appropriated for you.
Just my though tho
I can vouch that. I need teh OC/UV.
