For our Samsung i9000 Galaxy S???
I hope so. Vibrant seems to be getting more love than the i9000 international, at least in some areas...
btw, the names are awesome aren't they. team whiskey and manhatten project = awesommmmee =)
yeah thats what i mean or somebody port it to i9000.. if that is possible
Sorry to seem dumb here, but what's team whiskey?

I think their main aim was to overclock the kernel. Up to 1.6 gh!

Nice! I wouldn't mind an OC kernel after I get a bigger battery.

The obvious question... Will this impact on the life of the phone? (Not battery, that's not a problem).

Well there is no such thing as a safe overclock. Ideally, one should only overclock a system when it truly is needed and only for the programs where the higher clock speed might really get utilized... That being said, yes overclocking is going to lead to more heat, and as the mechanics of any device works, this would lower it's life...

Hi, im writing for a friend as he wants some advice.
he is choosing between both these smartphones (No others - as he can't afford newer ones, i.e - sgs2)
He is in a dilemna between the both.. he prefably wants a larger screen + better colours. but the desire s is newer, has a slightly better cpu etc.
Which one is better? Will the SGS get updated to gingerbread and beyond?
Which has better battery life in general? Is the SGS still a good phone even though it is 1 year old?
Thanks for responses!
This is a galaxy forum, so the answer from here is obvious! ;p

yeh, haha i thought that would be the response. but perhaps some honest ppl who have had a sgs for a while can give my friend feedback on it and how the device is, whther it is worth it or the desire s.
If you are into rooting and running custom roms, then the sgs for definate

Sgs is naff outa the box, laggy n crap, but v good once tweaked

Galaxy S, of course
You can already flash gingerbread and there are lots of custom roms.
Using cm7, it's blazing fast and you can overclock it up to 1.5Ghz with some kernels (but most phones can only reach 1.4Ghz or 1.44Ghz stable, which is still a 40%+ overclock)
So if you wanted a better cpu... well the cpu is a real beast. And you can't beat that screen.
Imo if you're not afraid to flash, the galaxy S is just awesome.
btw, the battery of the desire s is a little bit smaller than the one on the galaxy s, but I don't know about the battery life.
But yeah, the desire s might be better out of the box, since without lagfix the galaxy s isn't all that great...
The only advantage the desire s has other than that is more RAM.

Thanks! Will it get the official update too?
is it also true the Desire S supports 14.4 mb/s speed while the sgs is only 7.2mb/s...?
Will there be a great difference?
is this "friend" hypothetical ? lol
SGS will get Gingerbread officially yes, Some users have it official at the moment , dependant on the location in the world.
i too would suggest SGS, The desire is a good phone and i doubt your "friend" would be disappointed if they chose it.
BUT !!! as mentioned before the SGS is awesome when tweaked, loads of excellent developers making it even more awesome. and the screen..... its unbeatable
But as a conclusion, the SGS is a year old, why not get your "friend" to invest in an SGS2 ??

GPS can be affected on a scale of things,
But there are countless threads / apps / tweaks to make it better, I personally dont have any GPS issues and never did when i was on a stock ROM.
if your friend is happy with a nice stable phone with many uses then a stock SGS will suit him fine.
however if he is like a lot of us android users and wants to hack the crap out of his SGS he will be jizzing in his pants .... lol
The sgs comes in a 16 GB version too.... and sd card upto 32GB so plenty and plenty of storage
EDIT: i was happy running stock ROMS - but i knew i could get more from my phone so i got involved with the wrong crowd, ended up becoming an addict and now i have withdrawal symptoms if i dont get my daily fix DAMN YOU XDA !!! lol

my tab is so damn laggy and i have been on the stock rom since i got it.. tempted to flash now..
unused RAM is wasted RAM.
take no notice of things like that, you will hear a lot about quadrant scores , RAM tweaks and so on.
if your phone feels fast for YOU thats all that matters, if you want a little extra speed then you can have it lol.
its all about finding the right balance for YOU, dont always panic about not having the newest ROM / Kernel / update and so on...
and by saying YOU - i mean your friend lol

thanks lol But why do lots of reviews say more RAM makes it smoother??? If it is just going to waste??
hopefully performance should be satisying enough
well its like RAM on a PC - it can make multi tasking smoother, but if you have 1GB of RAM and eveything you do uses 0.5GB of RAM, that extra is wasting away.
dont buy in to the hype of more is better, its not always the case, if it feels quick and responds quick, and that satisfies you, thats the main point.
Hell !! i would like a super computer with 10GB RAM - 5TB hard drive and so on... But my current PC does everything i want and it does it quick...... if ya catch my drift ?

Bump, still open to opinions believe it or not! he has 2 great offers for both devices.,.
will sgs still need 'fixes' after GB update?
cheers guys
As long as Samsung uses RFS as a file-system I believe it will always need a lagfix. I doubt they will ever get it right.
With every update people keep saying it's not required anymore, but when using a single ROM for more than 3 weeks it is imho.
I had XWJS3 for 4 weeks and it started lagging like hell.
So for average-users I tend to recommend HTC.
Hello fellas,
Hope you are keeping well!
I ordered the i9000t this week (have not received it yet), I'm coming from the old mighty N1.
What do you think about the phone in general? The update I'm doing is good from where I'm coming from?
I really appreciate the time you take to answer my questions in advance!
Regards,
Mingo
Yeah, the I9000 range be the M,B or T are really good phones, I'm not quite sure about the difference between them are so I'm not the person to ask, but in regards to performance, I have the I9000 original with CM7 and tweaks coming out of my ears, and overclocked to 1.6ghz and no word of a lie, it goes like ****e off a shovel lol

Hey mate,
Thanks for the answer!
I also think I bought a nice phone at the end, a good upgrade. Although I'm going to miss the flexibility of the N1...the problem is that the developer base for the N1 is getting smaller every month...
I originally installed Serendipity 6.3, then Serendipity 7.0 and then MIUI. I've found I like the interface for MIUI the best, but the phone goes noticeably slower and doesn't have good battery life. Which Captivate ROM would the community here recommend to get a good balance of features vs performance? Also, a pet peeve of mine is the Samsung custom dialer that changes orientation, so please make sure the ROM does NOT come preinstalled with that. Thanks!

Ok I've been trying to overclock this phone a nice how to would ne awsome so Iam running cm9 nightly latest from hash of codes I would like to change cpu speed any way to modify this. I'm not new to android but obviosly am no dev how to use terminal emulator to achive this I'm running the dev/tty the not shure what command to use from there. Or possiblie a module or script to run thnx
Some users are finding they're "overclocked" out of the box on the new builds. If I recall correctly speed is bogomips x 2, so you're already 20% faster than some users. This is likely due to TI/Motorola binning the chips, but it may also have been done to prevent overheating elsewhere in the system even if the CPU is capable. All the overclocked ROMs I've seen have gone as far as the 1.2GHz mark so we may be maxed out at this point due to limitations elsewhere.

thnx for the feedback how do i run the commands in terminal emu
I need to see the code for this
But not shure what to type in to bring up The spot where all the data is stored for the cpu commands or to see the kernel info also I can try to determin from there I'm trying to see if not I got the sbf no worries for me at all any who I'm trying to get all the people together to work this lil thing out of cm9 try to get this going for peps who wanna save battery and go faster. I open chmod in terminal but where do Igo from there or if im even going the right direction please help
You are going to have to build it in to your rom or you can use one of TeamHaters CM9 roms. The kexec roms will not support any overclocking at the moment.

Geez, why is people so obsessed with overclocking?
Why don't you wait until we have a more stable rom?
Is not like a couple of hundred of mhz are going to make much of a difference at this point.

Yes, of course, you're sure leading the innovation and development.
You're just a spoiled brat asking for something you don't fully understand.
Overclocking our device is not going to make great differences now or even when it's stable.
To "run 20 things at once" we need RAM, not processor speed.
Overclocking doesn't save battery either.
Why do I even bother.

Some CPU's are marked at e-fuse level to be not stable on speeds higher than 1ghz on the factory, and the kexec kernel seems to be addressing that, according to a comment made on the kexec rom thread.

Spelling isn't the problem. Try some punctuation.
Because cm9 is meant to be stable and fast. Since various devices react differently to being overclocked, it would introduce instabilities in some devices. That's why the performance section of settings in cm roms says, if you change these settings, do not file bug reports. Once kexec cm9 is fully operational, im sure someone will build a oc kernel

A friend of mine owns a Galaxy s2 and uses the above mentioned kernel. It is fast and hast good battery life and features. You can have a look at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617219
As the n7000 isn't too different hardware-wise I wonder if some skilled developer would be able to port this kernel to our platform.
Did you ever bother to read this?
"skilled developer"
While I wouldn't refer myself as incredibly skilled I was thinking of taking this on but I've recently found work so I'm not sure if I'll have the time now. That's the problem with developers, skilled or not, we tend to like being recognized with money rather than people clicking the thanks button (while that's also nice it doesn't pay the bills). I'm still going to look into it so don't give up hope just yet. Also as I mentioned to someone who asked the exact same question here in the n7000 forums you could just learn to program and try it yourself.

-100000000...000 that kernel apeal sexy to any dev cause of the commits, they look like an Amazon now lol and even u go to page 100 of its github, still no point to start porting it @@. I couldn't even find any tag that close to 3.0.64 of official CM source or 3.0.101 like many other S2 kernel. They r years-ahead of our kernels n maybe allow me to say: impossible thing lol (at least for someone does it for free).
Btw, I flashed that kernel on my friend's S2 n her phone battery usage can't compare to mine on TWiz (I know that the S2 only has 1650mAh but I doubt the GN will get any better even tho it is 3.1.x kernel) (currently) and the performance is relatively the same as what I have seen on my Note w TWiz and Hydracore kernel (or C.O.H).
I know that many of Note users want sth like that n I am interested, too if someone do it (but for reasons above, I doubt that only Dorimanx creator can do it) but it's not worth breaking rule to post sth like this (I mean in wrong section). So please mods, please move it to the rite place then (I will press that tiny report button once I'm on laptop)
And this is just my lil opinion.
