You need to be rooted, install rom manager, flash clockwork recover in rom manager copy downloaded zip file to internal sd card. Boot into recovery mode (vol up vol down and power held until white splash screen comes up). Select reinstall packages, might gave to do this twice, now you should new booted into clockwork recovery with green text. Select install xip from sd card, select chose zip, scroll to file you copied to sd card, scroll to yes, watch the magic happen. This is from memory so not guaranteed 100% exact description but enough that you will see what I am talking about.
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.
As for the kernel, you might want to become more adept at flashing and using odin because you will need it when something does not go right

Ok, I just rooted my droid 1 and am using the new liquid froyo ROM. Theres some other themes that go with, but I have no idea how to load/use them. They saved as a zip file to my computer, where do I go from here?

Put them on the root of your SDcard. I have a folder called "FLASH THESE FILES" where I put all themes/ROMs.
Just boot up in recovery using two or more hardkeys. I have a HTC Desire and in order to boot into recovery I press the back key and power key for 5 seconds. You have something in the same manner. If you already have a rooted ROM you might have a "REBOOT" option when you shut down your phone using the power button - Use that to boot into recovery.
When you're in recovery the rest is a piece of cake - Just find your desired theme and flash it!
For future reference: The search function would have given you the same answers without having to create a new thread.
Im using cognition. Can I use rom manager to flash to firefly or can I flash back to 2.1 using the update file and rom manager. Do I need to do something different?

Trench coat, couple of drinks, make sure it's not too cold out to reduce shrinkage
Seriously I think both rims use same base and ext 4. Put fire fly on your internal sd, long press power, select recovery, install zip from sd, choose zip, fire fly, confirm
Thanks
Thats a big help.

Just flash your downloaded .zip theme using red cwm (clockwork recovery). Clear cache and dalvik cache through the advanced setting in cwm. Reboot....enjoy your new theme!

you have the modded re CWMR installed correct? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021
did you apply the SC v2.9.1 patch after flashing SC v2.9? if not go ahead and do that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983395
download the zip file, when finished used an app like androzip file explorer and go into sd card folder 'download' and move the file you downloaded out of the folder and onto the root menu of your sd card
exit androzip
reboot into recovery in the power options menu
wipe cache and dalvik cache in advanced
choose install from sd card
choose the zip you want to install
choose yes to install zip
when finished just reboot
use vol up and vol down to navigate CWMR and use the camera button to select and menu soft button to go backwards a menu
This is the standard install instructions for patches and themes
Haha no worries. We were all like that at one point in this android modding game. You'll get there soon and you'll be flashing roms, themes, and kernels all the time. Pm me if u need further assistance.
1) download theme
2) apply .zip file to sd card
3) assuming you already have cwm installed.... Power phone off and then power back on holding down the volume rocker and power button and then release
4) scroll down using volume rocker to install .zip from sd card
5) navigate to your downloaded .zip theme that you applyed to your sd and then select it by using the power button
6) select install (yes)
7) go back to the main cwm screen by pressing the search soft key button on your bottom right
8) reboot phone
hope that helps some. I'm typing this from my phone so I hope I got everything correct.
also be aware of what version of cwr you are using...the vast majority of themes use amend scripts whereas cwr 3.0 only can work with edify scripts....you ll need voodoo or older nonvoodoo recovery to flash these
im pretty sure i have clockwork i download and did the steps on this Super Clean version 2.9 - EB01/EB16 Froyo leak root+Froyo Clockworkmodwith MALWARE protectionthats what i got probaly didnt come with flash . i am pretty green at this stuff. lol

im try to put nitrodark on my phone i have the nitrodark 3.0 zip on my phone i didnt extact it am i supoosed to. then went into recovery and tred to install . it says e: failed to open/sdcard/update zip no such file. am i puting oit in the wrong place.
No, don't extract the zip file. You need to select the nitrodark.zip file on your SD card before you say Install file. It won't automatically select the file you want for you.

Did you rename the file to update.zip and place it in the root of your sd card? If not, you will nerd to select the option to install from zip and then select the zip where it its located on your sd card.

So if you renamed nitrodark.zip and put it in the root of the sd card like Nitsuj said, choose "apply update.zip" from the main clockwork recovery menu. If you didn't rename and move the zip file, choose "install zip from sd card" and go to the "download" folder, and select your nitrodark.zip file. If you are running the stock browser, the zip file will be there.

How exactly did you manage to install superclean using Odin? I didn't see any Odin file on adrynalyne's superclean thread, and Odin does not let you choose a .zip file from the PDA button.

Before my phone crashed severely and i had to flash teh firmware and rom... I had a really awesome bios running that allowed me to do more than the default one allows (eg, backup/restore, install update.zip, install zip from sdcard, reboot system, and i cant remember the rest)
I had run into this while looking for a fix for hte 3 button mode...
Does anyone possibly know what it is i am talking about and can point me in the direction where to find it please?

I downloaded cog from rom manager than tried to install it. I remember from flashing rom on my other phone that I had to select reinstall packages a few times. Nothing really changed. I rebooted then went back to rom manager and clicked install rom from sd (not sure if that's exaclty how its worded) I saw the rom but backed out. I booted back into recovery and selected format sd, I'm guessing I shouldn't have done that, now I'm getting a signature error in cwm, also when I select download rom from sd in rom manager I no longer see my download folder. Help please, not sure if any of this make sence.

A little hard to follow, but I would just flash back to stock and go and download CM and place it on your root sd card and just flash through CWM.

I am stock, nothing flashed. The problem I'm having is after I selected format sd card in rom manager (not sure why I did that) I now no longer have a download folder, in other words, if I open root exploror and try and fine my download folder I wont because its not there.

Just download CM from the DEV section and place it on the root of your sd card. Then power off your phone and 3 button combo into cwm and flash that way.
Cwm tells me when I try and install anything that- E: failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip (no such file or directory)
E: Signature verification failed, installation aborted. This is the exact message I get in cwm

How are you trying to install via cwm? Are you selecting the zip file or just clicked install update.zip? Just asking to make sure your doing it the right way.
Ffs it's the blind leading leading the blind.
Op you can't see the folder anymore because format means WIPE so your sdcard is empty now.
And 2 the signature error isn't because if that it's because you are on stock froyo which requires signed update zips. To get around this look here for the 3e recovery thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161102
You're welcome

At first I downloaded the rom from one of the dev pages, I than checked root explore/sdcard/download to make sure it downloaded fine, which it did. I than went to rom manager and booted into recovery, but I didn't see anything about installing from sdcard (which is what I see on my infuse) all I see is reboot, reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data, and format internal sdcard. I selected reinstall packages because when I flashed my first rom on my infuse this step was required. Nothing happeded afterwards but the install didn't error out like its doing now. After nothing changed I than went back to rom manager and went to download rom, found the rom I wanted, selected download. After it downloaded I got an install prompt.I selected wipe data and cache (again, my infuse required this step) after that nothing seemed to change. I went back to rom manage and noticed a section that says install rom from sdcard, I opened that and say a download folder, opened the folder and saw the rom but I back out because I wasn't too sure about that process. I booted back into recovery and for some.dumb reason I clicked format internal and external sdcard. Now I'm getting this error message, and I have no downloads.
