How do you link Facebook profiles with contacts? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running Cyanogenmod 6, and I can't figure out how or if you can link Facebook profiles to your contacts. A couple of my contacts have Facebook linked to them from when I was running Fresh. As for the rest of them, I can't figure it out..

You can, just need to download the Facebook app.

I did already though.

Go to Settings, Accounts & sync, and add account. Add your FB account and then turn sync on so that your contacts are synced with their FB accounts.

It's already set up exactly like you said. I also tried to sync through the app itself, several different times. None of those tries worked. And shouldn't there be a way to link them individually? I mean just doing a sync shouldn't do anything, since it can't figure out who's who.

Long press one of the two contacts you would like to merge. Choose "Edit Contact" from the popup. Then hit menu button. Choose the "Join" option and then you can choose the other entry to merge with it. It's that simple.

Much appreciated. I have been trying to figure out how to get all my FB friends pictures to merge with my contacts while using CM 6.1 RC1.

What about when the Hero links the facebook profile to the wrong person in the first place, due to similar names? I haven't been able to separate them.

Try ROM CYANOGEN MOD !!!
Peace
If it's anything like the stock 2.1 rom, open up the Facebook app, hit the menu button, select Settings. Scroll to the bottom of the list and then select "Sync Contacts" and pick a different option.

This method is ok to get rid if the unwanted contacts but then u can't link any to there Facebook accounts what we need is a way to choose who we do and don't want, not just all or nothing.

grouping contacts

I have a group with a list of contacts in my gmail account, how can i display THIS group in my contacts on my nexus one?
You can't, not in the dialer.
But if you just want to work with groups, like assigning ringtone etc, you can download apps from the Market that can do it. Contacts GroupU being one, for example.
You could have just searched the Market for "group".
maybe i'm reading it wrong, but just go to contacts>menu>display options>choose the group

Looks like this would work. Just select your Gmail account and then put the checkbox next to the group you want to be displayed.
Looked a bit and found this option, and also understood why I "lost" it: the "Display options" menu only appears when the tab is "Contacts", and mine stays on "Favorites" when I don't move it from there.
Thanks, and it's probably also what OP was looking for.

Contacts joined with facebook

I am trying to figure out why in my contacts they about a quarter of them show facebook information with the facebook picture attached to the contact picture, and then the rest of them do not show the facebook picture but when i go into edit on the contact at the bottom shows some information like their full name from facebook, phone number and email, also showing an exclamation point with "Facebook contact information is not editable on this device" which I believe is normal. How would I get this person's picture to show when the phone already thinks the facebook account is joined? Oh and when I try to join it the person does not show up in the join list.
Unrelated question: Does anyone know a fix for slow app scrowling in 2.2 STOCK froyo? the 3D effect is nice but when I had a launcher from the market it would scroll with one swipe of my finger from the top to bottom, now the same swipe would get me just a couple rows down.
Thanks everyone
Facebook syncing
In facebook people have first and last name, If you want them to sync properly edit the contacts information to match facebook name, and that should clean things up. If not let me know.
Thats the one thing about the HD2 I liked... You can manually match your contacts with your facebook contacts. I don't think you can do that with the N1, unless you know what all of your friends facebook ID numbers are.
My contacts already are named just as they are in facebook.they have facebook information at the bottom of the edit contacts area. Just no picture.. how do I fix this?

You can do that with Android, too.
-> Go to contacts
-> Choose the contact you want to assign a Facebook-account to
-> Hit the menu botton and "Edit"
-> While in "edit mode" hit the menu button again and there should be a "Join" button
-> It should suggest some Facebook contacts
Attention! though, some user report, that this can change the name of the contact. Before saving make sure the contact is filed under the name you want (by editing the name if necessary).
You can revert this operation the same way but chose "Seperate" if you joined two contacts that don't fit anymore.

If the contacts fb info is already linked to the correct contact in your phone book and its just now showing the pic, you can tell google to use it manually by;
- Going to the contact without the image, click in to there contact card and select edit from the menu.
- Then scroll down to the facebook section part of the contact info and click the profile pic shown
- a dialog should show up with the option "Use this photo"
Select that and it *should* add the image as the contacts profile pic.
If its that the accounts simply aren't linking, ensuring they had the same name worked for me, but i imagine if your still having no luck with that, the manual join described by the guy above should do the trick.
Hope that helps
Fixed by restoring phone.

If you check "use all contacts" in stock phone contacts app, the pictures appear.

Synch Multiple Calendars?

My wife and I have each other's calendar available to each other. So on the web, we can click one or or off to see each on together or separate, and each in a different color.
I currently fine that my calendar is on the phone, but not my wife's. Do I need to 'add and account' to see hers? If so, will it be in a different color? Can I easily filter between hers and mine if I have them both on the phone?
Thanks for any thoughts.

on my current android phone that syncs all of my calendars (including my wifes) downloaded automatically in different colors.
You didn't have to 'Add and Account' and add hers? It just came down because you have it shared?
Good Nesws!
Guess what. I tried our dear friend, Google.
Here is the answer:
1. Press your device's < Home > button, then press < Menu >.
2. Select Settings and then Applications.
3. Select Manage applications.
4. Press < Menu >, the select "Filter."
5. Select "Running."
6. Select Calendar Storage.
7. Press "Clear data."
8. Wait for everything to re-sync.
Hope this helps someone else.
I'm assuming that you are talking about multiple Google calendars. I'm trying to do the same. I'm able to do this on the Aria but not the Captivate. I tried to follow the same steps in settings but the "add calendar" step (that shows other Google calendars I'm subscribe to) is missing on the Captivate.
Yes, Google CAlendars.
I don't follow you though. In the instructions I listed above, there is no instruction to select "Add Calendar".
I have the multiple calendars for ONE login. So I manager calendars once logged in, and added my Work calendar.
For my wife's calendar, we just turned on sharing of her calendar with mine and it is on the list of calendars to replicate.
If you are wanting to bring down a different calendar with a different login, then you need to go into the calendar program; select Menu, CAlendar Sync, then on that screen at teh bottom will be a button "Add Accounts". I didn't want to use that for my wife's because then when I go to the sync settins, I have 2 optoins: Sync Contacts, and Sync Gmail. I don't want to sync her mail, or contacts, just the calendar.
SUCCESS!

Thank you a bunch!
Glad it helped you. I've gotten a lot of help on this forum. Its nice to know I can contribute value.

Contacts appear three times in messaging.

Certainly others must have this problem. It stems from, I believe, having identical SIM, Google, and Phone contacts.
But that's what I WANT. But I don't want everyone's name to appear three times when I want to send someone a text message. Is there ANY solution to this?
long press one of them, then "join contact"
day one...
I had double names appear for texting that went away by ungrouping them in contacts. I believe all my contacts became "grouped" when I tapped my backup .vcf file twice after a rom install...which may not be the same situation as yours.

Just change the view to only show you contacts from one of the three databases. Either Google, phone, or sim.
From contacts hit the leftmost softkey and then select more. Then select display options

My Contacts only displays my phone contacts. This has no bearing on the following:
1. When I want to send a text, everyone's name appears three times.
2. When I click the call button in a text, it asks me which number I want to call, then lists each number three times.
Something is up.
Open a contact and hit edit. If the contact is grouped there will be a + sign. All my contacts were grouped. After ungrouping them, they showed up twice in contacts, and I had to delete one.

That WOULD solve the problem.... except:
1. I do not want to delete my contacts off my SIM. The SIM card carrying your contacts is a great feature.
2. I do not want to delete my contacts off my Phone. The Contacts menu looks a lot sleeker without the icons to the bottom right of each entry, and the pictures I feel load faster when they are stored on the phone.
3. I do not want to delete my contacts off my Google account. It stores my contact pictures as well as makes it easy when I flash over to a new ROM.
I will not delete these entries. They are all important. I want a real solution, and I am pretty sure one doesn't exist.
Edit: There isn't a "plus" sign, but each contact has three separate entries.
it was a little hard to understand at first but this is your poblem
#1 where do you want all your contacts saved to? PICK ONE (phone/sim/google)
open contacts> menu button > more > settings > save contacts to...
(google is better than sim or phone IMO auto backup and restore to net) but pick ONE. (uno, une, 1)
#2
open contacts> menu button > more > display options > choose contacts to display
only check the thing you picked above. UNCHECK the others
FIXED

There is the problem. And yes, I do see the "Remember this choice" option, but that is also not a solution as 1. I do flash my phone often and I would have to remember it every time, and 2. I would have to remember it for all of my contacts, which would be a pain.
Trusselo's instructions in post #10 are dead on, except in your case, i'll ask that you choose to sync your contacts to a single google account rather than the other 2 options (phone or sim). Unless you often swap your SIM card to a dumb phone, this is your best option anyways.
To ensure we save all your contacts among all your storage locations.. First, adjust 'display options' in Contacts so that ALL your contacts are displayed from all your locations (duplicates are ok).
Next, still in contacts, open up menu, choose 'import/export/', then choose 'export to sd card.'
Now follow Trusselo's instructions in post #10.. Make sure you save contacts to a google account. Also when choosing 'display options', uncheck EVERYTHING, and ONLY check 'my contacts' under the google account you save contacts to.
Go to 'Accounts and sync' in settings and ensure that auto-sync is ON, and that 'sync contacts' is ON for the google account you're saving contacts to.
Now, in contacts, open up menu, choose 'import/export' again, and this time choose 'import from sd card'.
Open up GMail in a web browser, go to Contacts, go to 'my contacts', click on the 'more actions' button, choose 'find & merge duplicates'. Now just give your phone a minute to re-sync all your contacts with google..
This will clean up any duplicate contacts and phone numbers you may have. So you should only see one entry for each contact and number. It will also sync all your contacts regularly to your google account, even for new entries, which imo, is a lot safer than storing them directly on the phone or SIM card.
I've tested this method, and it should work for you if followed exactly. If there's anything that needs to be clarified, let me know.
I want them saved to my SIM card. And I want them saved to my Google Account. But I want them stored on my Phone.
I believe you want me to delete them from my SIM and from my Phone in order for this to work. I simply do not see why I would need to do that. If that is not what you are saying, then what is it? On my Contacts on GMail, there's only one number for each name.

To be clear, this will NOT delete contacts from you SIM card, nor from your phone. What this does is force ALL your contacts from your SIM AND your phone AND your Google account to be synced(copied) to your google account. Once that is done, all your contacts will appear on your google account and will be immediately copied back to your phone (as a locally saved copy).
Then what we're doing is just "hiding" all the duplicate contacts from your SIM card and 'Phone location' (not deleting them), so that we only see the contacts that were synced with your google account.. so its less confusing than viewing the same contact from 3 different locations.
All your old contacts will remain on your SIM card, only now all your old contacts and newly created ones will appear in contacts and be synced (backed-up) to your google account. This is useful because.. say you lose your phone, you will still have a copy of all your contacts in your google account and can be easily synced with a new phone, if they were stored on the SIM card or the 'Phone location' then they would just be.. gone.. lost forever. They will also sync back to the phone (with pics) if you flash a new ROM.
On another note, should you ever want to get a new phone and simply move your contacts, you can sync your contacts via your google account like I said, OR you could just go menu>import/export>export to sim card.
Make sense?

No, i'm asking you to do the opposite. I'm asking you to store all your contacts to Google, and ONLY display Google contacts, and UNCHECK (hide) SIM and PHONE from 'Display Options' so that you do not see any duplicate names or phone numbers.
This will most likely solve your problem with seeing duplicate entries and is a much smarter way of managing your contacts.

Actually, by your own admission, you're not.
"if you're asking me to change the display option to only display SIM/Phone/Google contacts, it is already set to do that."
Right there, you just said that ALL your contact locations are turned ON..which is the cause of you seeing 3 identical phone numbers for each contact. Earlier in the thread it was pointed out you need to ONLY select ONE option; the same location you are storing contacts to.
Let's say you already have all your contacts save to Google, that's great. That means you don't have to go through that entire process i wrote up. All that was meant to do is ensure ALL your contacts from all your locations were saved to google, but if that's already done then there's no need to go through all that.
It really goes back to Post #10.. assuming you have only have no duplicate phone numbers set up in google, then you just need to follow those instructions and you won't see those duplicates anymore.
Sounds like you either didn't follow the directions correctly in post #10 or not at all. The key thing is save your new contacts to google, then change the display options so ONLY, ONLY, JUST ONE, option is checked, and that is the Google account you are saving contacts to. Once this is done, you will not see duplicate entries anymore.
