Doc_kalpik's new I9000 ROm + Reorient kernal = possible? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if it is possible to use this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
With the 2.1 reorient kernel?

Just put the zImage file inside the .zip.

V6 should be OK.
Word of advice, the new JPA on the i9000 has a new modem (JPP).
I will not port v7 over until the modem is confirmed to be working on the captivate. I don't have all the resources available to me to test the modem.

its working. im using it now.

hijack thread for my own "if possible"...
there is alot of good developments going on over in the i9000 forums and while roms are one thing alot of these rely on a completly different kernel to be flashed. im pretty sure we cant just flash the reorinent kernel ontop of these and expect it to work and i noticed the super optimized kernel in the i9000 is JUST the zimage so thats just not going to work. is there some crazy ass way to integrate our reorient kernel into some of these optimizations? seeing all this good stuff pass me by is driving my ocfd nuts

ive seen a lot of those optimizations too and your right you cant just flash the reorient kernel over an i9000 rom and expect things to work exactly like intended for that rom because that roms kernel will be completely wiped when you flash the reorient kernel. the reorient kernel does generally fix all the major problems youd have if you didnt flash it, but then you lose the things that that kernel was built to do. i think the biggest reason a lot of these havent been implemented yet is because there is no source code for our 2.2 kernel yet.

I am surprised this still gets asked??
The re-orient kernal from xcal is exactly there for that reason. It makes it possible so that we ATT captivate users can take advantage of the European i9000 roms from the SGS i9000 forums.
These are the requirements for the i9000 cooked roms to work (this is not the only way to do it but it is the easiest)
1) the i9000 rom needs to be in ZIP format so it can be applied via clockwork recovery (most of them are: Doc/Kalpik, Darky, Tamatuya)
2) your current rom/recovery needs to support 2e recovery and have the latest clockwork recovery installed
3) the re-orient kernal needs to be applied right after the i9000 rom is applied, meaning before you reboot the phone. Otherwise you loose the power button select key in recovery.
The latest version (v7) from Doc has caused FC's on the keyboard, so it is unusable for now. The modem as pointed out above may also not be compatible, so I would stay away from v7 and stick with v6 for now.

I'm sucessfully using JPP with V7. Using kernal 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #38. Using a lagfix called No RFS advanced ext 4. Using Vlingo keyboard from Samsung. I've been able to correct force closed apps by clearing their data caches. The only real problem I have encountered is the same one I have had with all the I9000 rom's I have tried to date-no audio on videos. Able to install zip's, lagfix and other add ons through ClockworkMod recovery.

jk2 port possible?

Anyone know if it's possible to port http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835540 to the JJ4 cog versions. It's animations and look are great for the speed of cog.

as of version 2.4, I believe Cognition is based on JK2.
http://ponack.net/designgears/
oops, seems like he has reverted back to JI6/JJ4... nevermind
I'm sure he has his reasons for preferring JI6/JJ4 over JK2, but JK2 can be "ported" as it's own ROM if you'd take the effort.
Looks doable, I think official froyo is about to drop but I may try this because the vibrant roms don't have the limitations att imposes like a lack of tethering.
Find one of the deodexed jk2 roms mentioned in the thread that this theme is compatible with, flash the rom and it should boot, a few things will be out of wack like the back and home buttons. And some other things, I cant remember exactly what though.
If it does boot you are half way there, now odin flash a captivate kernel and modem.bin or a kernel modded for use on the captivate, setirons gt I-9000 kernels are nice but drain battery with certain modem files and I don't know how a vibrant rom will fit into the modem.bin switcheroo that is suggested to get all the att bands working. For that reason I recommend a ji6 or jj4 kernel and modem.bin but if you do that you will need to use a kernel that has a 2e recovery our clockwork recovery added in to be able to flash the theme.
If the phone doesn't boot after the vibrant rom is flashed you may need to try flashing to stock then a 2.1 vibrant rom.
You can also try the 2.4.1 cognition rom but I don't think it works with the theme you posted. Worth a shot though. There is also a version of the darkness theme for the cognition rom.

Forgot, before you start I'm assuming your phone is rooted and has jj4, use adb or root explorer to get the swype.apk(not certain if it's needed, depends on the build.prop) and the camera.apk (i believed it had more options and settings) and save them to a safe place like an external sd card or home computer. You may also need the captivate build.prop, dunno with the vibrant build.prop you might not need the jj4 swype.apk, I'm not sure if there will be any I'll effect from using one build.prop or the other.

[Q] Questions about Roms

Ok so I got tired of the problem with the random shut down, so I returned the phone back to amazon for a brand new one I already rooted it and unlocked it and side-loaded it already. Before I started to run custom roms on it, I want to ask you guys on here what ROMS that are "stable" as in many people have used it and gave feedback that their phone will not shut down or crash.
I also have suggestion that hopefully can be done on this forum, and that is if a mod on here or an admin can make a separate section under android development for just roms only, so that way it is not all jumbled up and mixed up with other mods, or any other development guides
Thank you for all your inputs!
If you want stability then go for assonance 5.0 with a no oc kernel (xcaliber's). It is very good with all features working.
I saw the Assonance 5.0 thread but I do not see anything about the non-oc/uv section... Is there anything extra that I need to do or just download the .zip and flash it using clockwork? Also will I get the swype keyboard and all the function that the stock have and better?
I am on assinance v 5 with xcal voodoo kendal non oc. What you have to do its flash rom, disable the lagfix, download the new kernel, flash in clockwork recovery.
I also changed the modem from jk3 to jl3 to try and improve reception and battery.
This all sounds hard, I am sure but it is as easy as what you did to root your phone. You just need to learn the steps

mcord, I got the rom, flashed it but how do I disable the lagfix? Why do I have to download a new kernel and changed modem from jk3 to jl3? I thought it is all included in the .zip of the rom?

You don't have to change the kernel or modem. I did out of preference. I like xcal with voodoo more the the pre packaged kernel. I like jl3 more then jk3. The rom is fully functioning without the changes I made, and some may not like what I have done.
If you want to disable lagfix you have to get into recovery.
Advanced lf options
Lagfix
Disable lagfix
Reboot
Select backup and restore
Done.
The stock kernel is an oc kernel and I.am not interested in over clocking

How do you use non-oc version with this rom? I heard several people complained about battery issue not lasting as long with the assonance?!? I'm trying the di11igaf's 3.0 rom
If you want a non oc kernel on assinance download this
http://etc.muteheadlight.net/android/I9000_reoriented_v2.2.1_bln.zip
disable current lagfix using steps listed above.
Go into clockwork recovery
Select install zip from sd
Search for this file
Select
Select
Reboot
Your phone will talk to you as this installs.
done

I9000M Compatability

I have a GT-I9000M (Bell) SGS and I was wondering what mods, kernels, etc are compatible with it?
Most mods or custom ROMs are based on JPU or JPY and the only JL2 custom ROM is seeARMS version.
I tried to update to JS3 a couple of times but it only rebooted at the Samsung splash screen. How do I know what is compatible with the I9000M and what is not? Why is a ROM from Europe not compatible with my phone? Is it location set into the firmware?
I do not know what the differences between the stock ROM and the custom ROMs are, but some custom ROMs do work.
I have a funny feeling the bricks a lot of people are getting are due to incompatible mods and their firmware.
I would gather there is some info about this somewhere on the forums, but I was not able to find anything useful.
Thanks,
Ian

Hey,
I have a gt i9000m and have been flashing lots of custom roms. I have flashed Darky's rom, Doc's rom (jpy and js3) and used Hardcore's kernel and Supercurio's kernel. I have had no problems whatsoever with any of them. I would stay away from any lagfixes if i were you, just to be safe. Watch out because some versions of voodoo kernel (supercurio) have the lagfixes enabled by defaut on first boot. So if you hear a weird voice coming from your phone, do not turn it off. It may take up to 20 minutes to complete the process where you will stay on the first boot screen where it says GT i9000m / i9000. Lagfixes are not bad, just they can be a pain and imo do not show any real performance boost.
Basically your i9000m can handle anything that is for i9000 ...
I always flash custom rom's with CWM (which is included with cutom kernels). When i received my replacement i9000m,
1) i first flashed stock jl2 for the sbl.bin (fixes corruption issues)
2) flashed hardcore's kernel via odin.
3) let it boot to see that everything works.
3) download a doc's custom rom. preferably with hardcore's kernel.
4) put it on your internal SD card
5) Shut down phone, enter recovery
6) You should see a green menu if you installed the kernel correctly.
7) Choose Install zip from SD card.
8) Choose zip from sd card
9) navigate to and select doc's .zip you put on your sd card.
10) let it install and then boot. It can take a while (10 minutes) for first boot
Have fun
OH and the latest doc's rom have the APN set to inet.bell.ca, which is supposed to be tethering data. So go change that to pda.bell.ca in apn settings .... just as a precaution. I can't say if it actually incurs more charges because i have the 6gb tethering plan from bell
Hope this helps a bit, sorry for my bad english, im from Quebec
Hi! I'm experiencing some problem with my froyo upgrade... I'm from Quebec too. Can you help me?
my 9000m stop at S logo...
Can you give me the link where you download the files? I think my problem came from bad version for my Bell I9000M.

Thanks for the info. I really want info on flashing stock ROMs and kernels. I like the stock stuff. It seems as fast as cooked ROMs without the incompatibility I seem to have on some apps/widgets.
I heard 2.2.1 is a better performer with better GPS than 2.2 so I thought I would try it in stock form first.
Thanks,
Ian

Need more information before i can help you. What rom were you on ? JH2 ? were you updating with kies to JL2 ? with odin ?
You can download i9000 stock roms here : http://www.samfirmware.com/android.htm
You will need to register to download files. Get the JL2 stock rom and a copy of Odin to flash. Make sure to read guides on how to flash using odin on this forum like this one :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7152078#post7152078
1.Flash Firmware and kernels using Odin.
Note: This will in (almost) all cases erase all your data and applications (includind root!). It will NOT touch the internal or external SD card.
Requirements:
-Odin3 version 1.7 (Note: Odin should be on the system partition (the partition where windows is installed) to avoid possible issues)
-".PIT" file for the Samsung Galaxy S (See FAQ#B9 or the source of the FW for the version to use! Not needed for kernel flashes)
-USB cable
-Desired firmware package or desired kernel package
Procedure:
1.Open ODIN. (And close Kies, if you have it open. It is important to have ODIN open BEFORE connection the phone via USB!)
2.Select the PDA/Modem/CSC/.PIT files in Odin. (For kernel flashes, only PDA is required. For FW flashes, .PIT and at least a PDA is required. Some PDAs have Modem and CSC integrated. Make sure you have the correct .PIT file. Usually 512.pit)
3.Check the "Re-Partition" checkbox.
4.Turn the phone into the download mode by pressing and holding VolumeDown+Home+Power.
5.Connect your phone with your computer and wait until the drivers are installed.
6.When the drivers are installed, click Start.
7.The phone will be flashed and once it’s finished, it will boot up. (Do NOT disconnect the usb-cable, remove the battery or otherwise interrupt this process!)
8.You have successfully flashed your phone.

Merci, je me doute toujours
i am currently on latest doc's rom from the kitchen and i have to say GPS is really spot on , I am using JL2 modem with hardcore's k12Q-t5 kernel + doc's base 9.1.3. the rest of the phone is just butter smooth without any lagfixes and tweaks. I find that the stock one is a little laggy but again, i have lots of apps and data
If you haven't tried yet, you should definately check out SuperCurio's sound fixes, they are amazing !! the SGS sounds soooo much better with them.
all you need is hardcore's (k12Q-t5) or supercurio's (5.2) kernel and the Voodoo Control App from the market. It really changes the output of the galaxy and makes it able to compte againts much higher-end audio devices
Have a good one
Thanks Lightarrow, I have tried so many of the custom ROMs but I was never really happy with them, so I always went back to stock.
I think I will try hardcore's k12Q-t5 kernel and SuperCurio's sound fixes asnd see how the phone is.
You're right, there is a slight (Very) lag with the stock JL2, but I never minded it.
Salut,
Ian
I think it's better to start a new topic for my problem. It's a long story....;-/

[Q] Modem/kernel suggestions for Darky's on i897 (Captivate)

Just about to flash Darky's ROM 9.3. Planning on flashing the i897 500 mhz speedmod kernel afterwards, plus of course an i897 compatible modem to match the kernel.
First, is it necessary to do a full wipe if I'm currently on a stock rooted i897 with eclair (2.1)? And must I really pull the sim, sd, and battery? If so , why?
Second, should I flash Darky's captivate fix before the rom or not?
I get conflicting reports when I search the forums.
Finally, what modem(s) would you suggest? I'm in PA (Harrisburg area) on ATT so I need the 850 Band. Suggestions? I'm assuming based on my research here I'll need an i897 modem to match the i897 version of the kernel (assuming it's really necessary to flash the i897 Speedmod instead of using the one Darky's comes with(???))
P.S. Safe to do all this with CW from recovery menu? or must I really install/use Odin? (more work, sigh)
Thanks in advance.
First, is it necessary to do a full wipe if I'm currently on a stock rooted i897 with eclair (2.1)? -Yep, it's not hard. I have 2 bugs than I not to do it. Not work Home button, and my cappy play music throw the speaker than I plug earthphone and the opposite .
And must I really pull the sim, sd, and battery? If so , why? - No. I Flash 5 times and nothing bad happens. And my phone plug into the PC via USB than I flash.
Second, should I flash Darky's captivate fix before the rom or not?
I get conflicting reports when I search the forums. - I don't know. I do not apply any fix, all works perfect.
Finally, what modem(s) would you suggest? I'm in PA (Harrisburg area) on ATT so I need the 850 Band. Suggestions? I'm assuming based on my research here I'll need an i897 modem to match the i897 version of the kernel (assuming it's really necessary to flash the i897 Speedmod instead of using the one Darky's comes with(???)) -Dont now I'm from Russia.
P.S. Safe to do all this with CW from recovery menu? or must I really install/use Odin? (more work, sigh) - I instal from Odin because before I flash CM7 (on CM7 very bad video works) Use Odin very good program. Not difficult. But if power off yve got a problem.

[Q] From rooted speedmod to unrooted no custom kernel gingerbread

From rooted speedmod to unrooted non-custom kernel
Hi I have the international galaxy s.
I9000DTJP3
kernel version: hardcore speedmod k13c 500hz #24
build number: FROYO DTJP5
Firstly, I have rooted using Super One Click
And I changed my kernel after reading instructions from this forum.
I now want to undo what I've done and go back to the original phone
(and later maybe update to gingerbread)
I've spent a lot of time reading through this xda forum and finally I make my own thread and ask directly.. Sorry if this has been asked already but I searched almost everywhere.. Maybe its my lack of professional vocab.
1. I'm guessing to unroot, I just click 'Unroot' on Super One Click but will this affect my speedmod?
2. I have the 3 Button Method installed but I don't know how to safely test if it works. Just do the 3 button combo and if it works, go back by simply taking off the batteries?
3. So if that worked all well.. I would have an unrooted speedmod phone. How do I remove this speedmod? Stock roms? I don't know what they mean.. is it the default firmware? do I have to flash it in? If I install that would that automatically replace my speedmod?
Thank you.. I would really really appreciate your help thank you..
haha! I`ve got similar question,
I`ve root my SGS using the One Click, did the 3 button fix, and to my surprise manage to flash the speedmod k13e 500.. currently this is my build *#1234#
I9000DXJPE
I9000DXJPB
I9000OLBJPA
a few days ago, i read doc`s kitchen rom and download the cooked rom with this configuration
*NEW* ZSJPK v11.1 WIPE
CSC : XME
Speed mode kernel
DXJPB Modem
2.2.1 jpj browser etc with tweaks, custom bootanimation and mod sound
so my question can I just use the recovery update.zip to install the rom?
p/s I`ve no idea what I`m doing but it look fun to mess around the phone so I`m a beginner that knows nothing but I could read if that matters
I dont know if it will effect the speedmod but if you just flash the stock rom I think it will replace it.. just imagine if you are going to change from one kernel to another or update to a newer version what will you do? just flash it and badaboom the new one will replace the old one.. so it is a similar process..
Just one question.. if you have the EXT4 lagfix you have to undo/disable that first am I right?
To get back to original ROM, get your version from http://samfirmware.com.
If you used any lagfixes disable them before flashing (because the stock-kernel does not support ext4-partitions).
Flash the firmware (PDA, MODEM, CSC) with odin (repartition not ticked).
To verify the 3-button-combo works just power of your phone and then press "Home+Volume-down+Power", then it should enter download mode.
